Interesting video and system! Why not put some sort of net or colander around the plant when you put it in the water so only the small fish can get through? Just an idea.
Hi! What would you recommend be done for super-high nitrate levels in the tanks? All commercial solutions involve special filters, which won't really work in an aquaponics setup. I know that higher than average nitrates are normal, but mine seem to be severe and it is starting to affect the fish.
Hi Malevolence, that's an easy one but not really the topic of this video. If you have high nitrate is probably because you have not enough veges. The easiest way to deal with it is to use some water of your aquaponics setup to water your classic garden. In this way you will use it as a very efficient natural fertilizer and you will have to add new water into your aquaponics system which will dilute and decrease the nitrate concentration. Again the idea is to turn a problem into an opportunity :)
I read somewhere that you can clean off aphids and some other pests using a vacuum cleaner, is that something you have tried? I was thinking that for a very large system an automatic CNC vacuum cycle could run once a week and clean off pests and plant litter. Another thing: last year I spread chopped up garlic and garlic juice all around in my greenhouse to chase off the aphids and that worked.
Hi Jaycub, I have never heard about the vacuum cleaner technique. I imagine it must be modified in order to avoid damaging the plant leaves. I also use some tomato leaves spray and it decrease the aphids population but they always come back. Your garlic mix seem interesting, I imagine the greenhouse smells very well then 😆
Hi MMS Aquaponics! I hope your fish are going well? :) For snails you can use beer traps (same as for slugs). you can also display some pots or boards on the growbed and they will hide underneath during the day so you will simply have to collect them and to put them away (or eat them ahahah :) ) Cheers! Jonathan
I had just pulled out my broccoli for this very reason. Now it is time to put it in the fish tank. If only slugs were as easyvto deal with (yes i have beer traps).
Yes this time of the year is a bit tricky regarding pest control as the natural predators are not here in high numbers yet. I generally don't have too much troubles with Slugs as we can use some efficient traps or even a stone will do the job. Aphids, fungus gnat, thrips or Spider mites can be more challenging in my opinion but they make an amazing fish food :)
You can buy Epsom,Potassium and Calcium salts as foliage spray to protect plants also naturally.
Thanks Alexiz

What are the chances of pest attack in aquaponics as compared to the soil based farming?
What kind of tomato is that in the intro? It looks like it has no placenta (slime)
Thanks for the good tip! Can you advise the best way to deal with snails?

Genius
Thanks, Have you started aquaponics yet?
The roots remained in air for 30 min
Good comment, they should be covered away from sun rays.
Cheers
