That looks a lot like our Kerala porotta or parotta. That one takes a bit more of oil and is a bit more elaborate. They are flaky and layered.
It is the same thing. It's still called prata in neighboring Singapore. Our cousins in Malaysia north of us just called it canai. Canai is a local Malay word, maybe that made it more popular in Malaysia
That's what I was going to say. . Man Porotta with Beef curry soo good!
Parotta and beef fry. That's heavenly
And unhealthy in a huge way. Chappathi is way more healthy

Greetings from United States! I am a Guyanese born, raised in USA. I really enjoyed your video, informative and delicious all in one. Thank you for making it simple for me to follow. Love your work❤🎉
I've never followed any of your recipes and got disappointed. Your combination of spices is always right. I looove your recipes! Keeping them coming.
Thank you Phil 😊
I tried this, and they're delicious! Everyone loved them, and people have been asking for the recipe, so I've been sending them your video! It's a bit time-consuming for a first-timer but super easy. I actually put 3 of the dough balls in the refrigerator, and the next day, I let em sit on the counter for about 30 minutes or so, and they cooked up perfectly 😊
Phil has got a very pleasing demeanour. She is very friendly and I love watching her videos..
thank you🙏🏼🤗
In Kashmir India it is called baakir khawani. It is baked by bakers in large amounts and sold. We love to eat it with salt tea. But your way is easier and amazing. It is possible to try it at home. Thanks for the valuable information.
If your a baking it then it's not the same.. here no baking
@@puneethkumar1859 Sir, the bakers use refined oil which makes it as soft as paratha.
However you are right because baking can not keep it as soft. Let us try at home and see the difference.
@@manzoorahmadshan21 its similar to bakarkhani but its not a bakarkhani....i have seen this in west bengal when i visited Kolkata...its called pitai paratha over there
You guys are putting salt in your tea?
Hi Phil, nice recipe you have here the roti cannai .. I'm an Indian here in Malaysia. This is one of the staple food here every other restaurant & outlet has this ... and we Indians call it as paratha! We prepare it with wheat flour too! and not forgetting our dear old chapati's ! Thank you dear for the refreshing touch! Am subscriping now to your channel hoping to see more of your delicacies! Cheers.
Malaysia boleh!! I enjoyed the food there during my studies, roti bomb! was one of my fav foods during pasa malam
Yes, Alhamdulillah, i had it when visiting Malaysia in 2019. It was wonderful!!
This is actually Moroccan bread called MSEMEM 🇲🇦
Paratha is sometimes more crisper than roti. I eat Indian, Pakistan and Afghan food and know Paratha is slightly different to how we Jamaicans do the roti. Also we can use curry powders to flavour our roti too and obviously Indian curry powder is a completely different taste too.
And in Kerala we call it as Porotta not Paratha so please do say in Northern part of India we call it as paratha 😅
Chef Phil! You don't know how this your recipe has changed my lifeeee. After struggling with chapo for many years 😩 This is so easy and came out sooo wellllll. Asante sana
Hi Phil. I made these last night with a chicken curry. I added crushed garlic and coriander (cilantro) to the butter/oil mixture, and they were delicious! Those flaky layers... wow 👌.
I'm from South Africa 🇿🇦
Thank you for sharing your skills. 🤗
Hello Libby. Did you use the SA cup size of 250ml for your measurements?
@@Sharon-tx5sj Yes, I did.
when staying in kenya, chapati was my favourite side and I've been missing it ever since.
I've tried making it myself, and while i got something close, it never was quite what I remembered. I will give this a try today, this looks absolutely perfect. Asante kwa ufunzi.
Hey Phil, I am from Pakistan. The dish u made we call it Paratha. And one thing i would like to suggest in this dish Roti/ paratha. If you also add one tablespoon sugar during preparation of dough the color of the roti will become more beautiful.
Hi Phil, I made this yesterday and I have to say the best that I have ever made. I usually make chappati but they come out a bit hard but your recipe is the best. Thank you
You have to beat the batter as hardly as you can with your hand (i.e smash, punch , stretch it and crush it do it for multiple times for 15 min) ... so that you are allowing the ingredients to mix homogeneously which leads to good results
Chapati has nothing to do with this recipe.... This is Parantha...
Hi Phil! You are very quickly becoming my recipe PLUG! I made these last evening..even my 14month old can't get enough of them! My 10year old was like these are the best 'chapos' ever!!!
Now I can't wait to try your chocolate cake recipe!!!
I'm glad I was born in a family that makes this (although we mostly just eat rice as carbohydrate). Not exactly the way you did it, but it will taste the same.
Only disclaimer is we are extremely more likely to get diabetes, due to our diet.
So have it sparingly.
Woow Phil, i tried this yesterday and got amazed by the layers, softness and sweetnesss. Your recipe is very true and ot worked so well. Must give you credit by subscribing and sharing. THE BEST EVER!! MUST SHARE WITH MY DAUGHTERS.
Asante sana! I will definitely try this. My family loves chapatis so much, when we travel to Africa is one of the thing they look forward to eat more often.
These are also called Kerala paratha. Since it has oil n butter mix in its layers, you can avoid oil when cooking it. It will release its butter/oil as the roti heats up.
Kerala Parotta... Paratha is North Indian
@@schrodingerscat23 North Indian call it paratha, South Indians call it Parotta
@@foodieforlife8263 They are completely diffrent dishes
Thank you from Australia 🎉 It was the first time I made bread successfully, even not exactly looked like in the video. I used only 1/4 of your recipe because I made it for my husband and myself for one meal. I also put shallot in it. It was yummy. I believe it will be better and better if I keep making it. I will try to put some wholemeal in it next time. Thanks again for your great video. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've made these before, but never got them to look this good, they are so beautiful.
Its looks really yummy and I will make it every once in a while but I won't include it as part of my daily diet to it being made from all purpose flour. Thank you for sharing the recipe
I made this last night! It came across my feed! The one I made was called oil roti. It is the exact same! So yummy!
Wow! Fancy that, this is also known as Roti Canai in Malaysia but it does not use any raising agent. Canai meaning to roll in Malay. In Singapore it's called Roti Paratha. In India it is also known as Malabar roti. Unsurprisingly this simple bread also appears in Yemen, Turkey. In some places they are baked instead of fried here. Thank you from Malaysia for the excellent recipe...subscribed.
Wonderful video, you are a great teacher! I really like how you filmed and edited the video, slowing down the bits showing the techniques to be learned. I think I can try making these now!
Watching from South Africa. I'm an Indian. One of the nicest easiet recipes. Than you for sharing.
Hi Phil I enjoyed your video..this is my first time viewing. I am from the beautiful twin Republic of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 😍 ❤️
On our Islands we have a beautiful mix of so many cultures and this roti that you made came from our Indian culture and it locally called 'buss-up-shot' or 'paratha' ( because it looks like a torn shirt and 'shot' is our local dialect pronounciation for 'shirt')
It's very popular and an inexpensive dish ..its also eaten with curry and for the health conscious we also do whole wheat roti.
I think I would be subscribing, I got a really beautiful authentic feel from you.
Has anyone ever visited our twin Republic?
🇹🇹🥰
thank you gal and glad you enjoyed the video...thanks for letting me know about your culture and about this dish, sounds really amazing and I would also love to try whole wheat roti too🤗 much love from Kenya❤🙏🏼
Trini to de Bone 🥰🇹🇹🙌🏾
Was now going to say the same thing. I am Trini but lives in Toronto Canada. Enjoy
I was now gonna say it looks like buss up shot 💯🇹🇹
Thank you so much for making this video and showing us how to make roti canai. I cannot wait to make this and some beef stew! Be well and be blessed! 🤗💖🙏
I made this the other day and they were spot-on delicious. Great as the first time I had them at Hawker's. I wanted to enjoy them with some shrimp etouffee, but I didn't have any shrimp or celery. I will get everything for both next time I go shopping. Thank you again for sharing the recipe and making the video.🤗💖🙏
Just tried this, and it turned out perfect! I've always been intimidated by Indian flat breads, but now I'm happy that we can enjoy a home cooked, delicious option!🙌👌love from Burundi🇧🇮
🇧🇮
I made it too. It was so yummy...
That is call oil roti in my country Guyana South America 🇬🇾I make this oil roti since I was nine years old. Their is a variety of different kinds of rotis that we makes in our country. I am so happy you found this receipt and love it ❤❤❤
My regular breakfast. Roti Canai is malay word for the Roti Prata. In India its known as Paratha or Porata.
Yeah. Only thing here, the dough is pulled from all sides such that it becomes as thin as tissue
Made these tonight, added garlic and coriander to the butter to brush. Amazing!! Thankyou ❤🙏
This is best canai rotti/Paratha recipe i have ever found, Thank you so much for this, Im so grateful to you, Tried it, Came out amazing! Love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 ❤
Roti Canai is Indian roti in Malaysia. Of course it's very similar to South Indian parota. There is no rolling. It's just done in a flipping technique but your two techniques are amazing and unique. Thank you
Thats Paratha Roti aka Buss-up-Shut. That's how it's made in Trinidad. We use a long wooden spatula called a 'dabla' to 'beat' the roti when it's hot to break it up. It's absolutely delicious and usually served with curry.
It looks yummy and quick to follow a simple instructions👍
Wow, this is amazing. I tried this today and it turned out perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing the recipe Phil. We love you
Thanks for this recipe. I made it this morning and it came out looking just like yours and I think the taste could very well be the same as yours too. Love it.
In my country Trinidad, we call this treat "Buss up shot" and is our number one delicacy
Yes we do. . . 😊🇹🇹🙌🏾
My thoughts exactly dat is buss up shot
@@michelledarmanie-gaspard5861 I know right !
I was born in Trinidad in the 50's. In those days this roti was called paratha. Only in the 70's people started referring to this delicate process as buss up shot. I do not call it the latter because I think this roti is too delicious and refined to be called buss up shot. Trinidad has a lot of unique dishes like peleau, souse, macaroni pie, curried goat and other dishes. Depends on who you are talking to, their number one delicacy is different; however, paratha roti is quite popular. As far as I can see here, Phil is sharing a method. I believe her process is perfect. Call it what you may. To each his own.
Yes it looks like a torn or “ bust up” shirt! So many Indian migrated to Trini and thus yes …the paratha reference.
Look yummy, thanks for sharing the recipe and showing to us how to make it. Cant wait to try it
hope it will turn as good as yours.
I just made it for the second time and I got so much better. It is amazing and will be a regular addition to our menu. Tonight it is with Sam Sifton's Chicken Shawarma. I also made a carrot curry soup that it will be great with. Thanks for the great instructions!
Mmmmmh! another recipe from you to keep my marriage at track thanks dear you have been amazing I do these often and am loving the way this is changing my love life i love cooking for my wife and its just amazing thank you
Looks amazing Phil. I must try this immediately Dear. Thanks for sharing and especially for the 'S' folding. So creative and keep up.
I tried them today and they came out superb! My concern was the salt would not be enough but it was just the right amount. Thank you!
Wow. So nicely done.
Watching from Bangalore, India. This is called Kerala Paratha here, as it comes from our southern State of Kerala. It is made with APF.
We here in Bangalore also make this layered paratha from wheat flour. We use warm milk (or warm water) to mix the dough. For smearing we use ghee (clarified butter).
But these are details. Your method and techniques are just fine too. I particularly liked the second technique.
I have observed that so many foods are similar between India and Kenya and to me it is very interesting.
Thank you for this step by step, very clearly explained and patient tuition through this video. Particularly helpful to youngsters even here.
Paratha originally is from the North India. South Indians, rather Keralites adapted the recipe and call it Malabar paratha.
@@peachNplum Yes. As a Bangalorean I can say that atleast until the end of 80s we had not heard of parathas and even then it was something which went to restaurants to eat.
Of course, now all of us are fans of the stuffed parathas. And plain or stuffed, parathas have become a house hold dish in here too.
@@oreogiri yes.. Now everyone eats parathas, barotta, parrota..
@@peachNplum 😀
@@peachNplum nope. It came to Kerala from Ceylon.
Thanks for the post ma'am, everyone has their own name for this delicious recipe. It's is known as "Roti Canai" in Malaysia and Singapore and I love to have it with spicy mutton gravy 😋 that my grandma makes. God bless Medical student Malaysia 👍🙌🙏
Watching from Trinidad and Tobago, that is buss up shot or paratha its the Indians and muslim way of making roti
This Is Roti canai or pratha. Yours looked sooo good, whn i grew up this ws our staple food and i still could not make one that looks/tastes as good as yours! Where I came from, after the butter spread, u can add cut onions or break an egg, or canned tomato sardine (mashed it) and fold just before flattening it fr cooking. My boys love it with nutella spread. Cant wait to impress my family with your recipe/method. Thanks for sharing your skill🎉
OMG I must make these IMMEDIATELY. These look delicious. Thank you!
Thanks a million for the excellent step by step direction to make these appetizing Rotis
I am Linda Botelho from Goa, India. 🎵🎶👌🏽👌🏽🙏
The original roti canai is staple breakfast in the Malay kitchen in Malaysia before the parata being named as roti canai too. The original roti canai is multilayered and very flaky. The dough is pulled down as long as possible on a small round table to make it as thin as possible. It is crispier than the parata.
Girl after numerous youtube videos resulted in roti that could have been used in ads for good year and Michelin tyres, I've finally found a recipe that works😅. I'm so proud of myself I can barely eat. Thank you
😂
We call this petai parotta in India which means beaten bread. We give a few spoons of oil or melted butter while kneading the dough. Milk can be used
instead of water. Milk makes the roti more soft. A pinch of salt and sugar can be mixed with the flour before kneading. You have made the parottas beautifully.
Hey Gopa yes that's true and another fat used traditionally although on the more expensive side is Ghee..it gives the petai parotta/ buss-up-shot/paratha a beautiful flavour.
@@cherylphillip3605
Thank you Cheryl. Yes a spoon ful of ghee gives the parotta divine aroma. Delicious really.
I made it, they came out very well! Thanks
As a matter of fact, they are called "Malabar Parathas" in India.
Yummy roti Canai... We Malaysian love it..
Love this video. Asante. In Tanzania 🇹🇿 these are the regular chapatis. If it doesn’t look like this haifai 😄

In my island home this is called Paratha or "buss up shut" "buss up shirt" ☺️ it's my absolute favorite roti☺️😅🥰
I have always avoided making roti canai. These two methos of creating the layers looks easy and the result looks fantastic. Thank you for posting. I see that you’re now on 170k subscribers. Good job. Keep growing your channel. I just subscribed. I’m making roti canai this coming weekend following your method.
Yum, looks delicious with that stew 🤤. Do you have a video of making that stew as well? I made bone broth soup, but after watching your video I'm craving for this meal. 😫

This is parotta, very famous food in our Tamil Nadu and Kerala 😘
Gave them a go.
Delighted with the result; not only did they turn out precisely the way they do in the video but they're as delicious as they look, (with a bowl of scratch curry.)
It is Kerala or Malabar Poratta. It is our common food and the best combination is with Beef fry/curry.

Just tried your roti and it came out very flaky. I am very pleased with the recipe thanks for sharing.
This was fabulous! When they were still warm I put some strawberry jam on one.. what a treat! Has anyone used this as a crust for a quiche or something like that? I would love to try it. Have you ever tried to bake them?
Thank you so much 🥰💖 I made and it turned out good Alhamdulellah 🌸
This we call as paratha in india . It is a favourite street food in South India. There were a variety of parathas like bun paratha, Ceylon paratha, egg paratha. Try to cook all. You will definitely love all the varieties . I love your videos
I tried this recipe out and the results are amazing
Woooo love the recipe 👌 thanks for sharing.
It's so amazing that Caribbeans, South Americans, and Indians also make this! I am wondering if Jamaica calls "Patties" the name because of the flakiness. You should look at the way Trinidad males their roti.
