When I deployed to Iraq, we were IN the staging area, loading up onto the busses when I discovered that one of the boots had somehow neglected to bring a sling (and his team leader had somehow not noticed). I ended up blowing a perfectly good daisy-chain of 550 cord to make him one. Felt pretty awesome to see him still rocking it on the way home after 7 months in country, though.
Did you know the Coast Guard recently changed their entry requirements for MEPS? No one under 6’ can enter service in the Coast Guard now...that way when the boat sinks the crew can all stand up and walk to shore.
Spiritus Systems makes the "Lunchbox" dangler pouch it should be perfect for your needs. You could probably hold 4 or 5 lunchables for extended operations.
The fisher price hard pack lunchable carrier only holds a single pack but it can be concealed carry. Comes in real tree, tactical black and my little pony. Works well in woodland, night operations and toddler situations.
Not a Coastie but I work on a lot of their cutters as a contractor. Definitely my favorite customer! Local civil sailors tend to think they're way more qualified than they are and we end up fixing their "repair jobs" all the time. Navy is WAY too particular to the point where we don't get anything done. Coastguard is very organized but easy and willing to work with us, jump in and get their hands dirty or even assign guys to help us fix their engines and props that aren't part of the contract but is "good training" for the newer members. Definitely my favorite customer 😁 Also they share hot meals with me lol
The 550 loop on the front sight goes back to MACV-SOG teams in Vietnam. The biggest advantage was that it didn't rattle or make noise like the traditional sling swivel did.
Yeah, thats why you dont put your shooting arm through the sling like an idiot. Keep your none shooting arm through, and its no different than a quick adjust 2pt, and you get the option of using it as a standard 2pt or a 1 pt if using the specter 3pt with transitional slide
All of your references to Rangers are legit. I was in Special Service Forces from '89 to '92 and loved reading books about LRRPs in Vietnam during my downtime. I've forgotten half of what I learned but there were so many tips and tricks casually thrown into their stories. Rangers rock.
CircaSriYak Great comment and on Air Force UA-cam reviewer "Nutnfancy" shows his cut up hands from reviewing knives ! The Army veterans do not have cut up hands from knives ! tjl
A rather salty reply there 409novaman. What's the matter, still PTSD'd from that time on Bagram when the Dragon DFAC messed up your omelette? Or was it that day that there was a long line at Green Beans for a latte and you were late for your spin class? Two truly more horrifying events than being stuck on the ground in contact, asking for air support, then watching some Iron Eagle wannabe in a F16, pissed off that he isn't getting into dogfights with MiGs, miss the enemy with his sniper pod, cry that he's bingo fuel and book it out of there.
Why so serious, just accept the fact that the comments are lighthearted kidding. Don’t be so triggered from a little humorous reply to comments about the air force. We have a special room filled with puppies, chocolate and teddy bears to let you down slowly from your emotional state. Until you get to the Romper Room, just take a few deep breaths and enjoy Thumbs world class vids, actually one of the best channels on UA-cam. I know that I’m going out, in a few hours, to buy a flannel shirt.
No harm in today's world reminding a good man of his path he takes... that he ultimately decides to choose. I bet instead of walking an already made path, instead he chooses his own, that no other has walked upon either leaving a trail or not..
I think a good sling/setup is maybe one of the most easy, effective, and overlooked things that a lot of people don't do with their AR's or other MSR/PDW/DMR/etc types. People look for the coolest rail, hip reticle, etc, but there's not to much talk about slings. In the real world, slings are a must-have if you really ever need to travel with your weapon.
The notification bell signifies that I'm now taking my mandatory break as a truck driver right here on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike. Thank you baby daddy for your life instruction, I'd be lost without you.

Another benefit of the 'opposite-side' sling attachment (ejection port side for RH shooters) is that the rifle will not flip upside down if you have to let go and allow it to hang by the sling.
When serving in Alameda as an HT I was sent over to one of the local coast guard bases to do some repair to a boiler on one of their cutters. I kid you not (or knot) that everyday at 1000 the OOD announced over the 1mc that coffee and donuts was being served on the messdecks. I never regretted joining the Navy more than that entire week. Really made me wish I'd more seriously considered my decisions in life. LOL

I walked into a Coast Guard recruiters office in mid 1997 after “acing” my ASVAB with a correct spelling of my name and was in Cape May for basic a month later. Twas a good twenty years.
Your vids have a ton of great info. Who better than to take advice from a operator. I'm a USAF veteran and know how much you have trained and the real world experience you have is a very respected. Thank You for your service.
I grew up next to a coast guard base. always inspecting our pirate/fishing boats. no idea why! My first boss that had a serious 100'+ boat was in the coast guard in Alaska and was a total badass.

You’re right handed, so usually your left arm would go through the sling along with your neck so that when the rifle is hanging, the buttstock is at your right shoulder and the muzzle is at your left leg. Buddy was on a wooden hulled shrimp boat off the Oregon coast. Got rammed by a steel hulled shrimp boat at night. Lots of lines and cables broke. Hull breached on the wooden boat. My buddy had both legs and one arm shattered from broken steel lines that smashed him. USCG helicopter and rescue swimmer saved his life.
When i was in Corpsman school, all of the Air force Medics and the whiskies used to give each other shit all the time. No matter what, all of the back and fourths ended with "at least we're not the coast guard"
That’s low! Coastie VETERAN of OIF/OEF here to say that I’m surprised it took this long for the Coastie jokes! Don’t hate! Just because our duty stations are Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, and every other resort area! AND it isn’t our fault the Army is the only branch that will take those that can’t score higher than a 20 on the ASVAB Test! Or is that they will take those that can’t count higher than 20?!!? I can’t remember lol all in fun... :patiently waiting on the multitude of hate to come: lol
J trust, I know what ya mean! Pulled a 12mo deployment to Iraq myself so I know how good we had it most of the time and how bad some had it. Can’t make fun of any branches if ya haven’t served in any! I can only imagine how bad those with multiple back to back deployments had it, feel for them, but love them for it!
Ha Coasties in da hizouse! But you forgot who does HRV's with DEA, Marshals, FBI, etc...heck hiding in the sand for drug runners. I'd take the CG than any other branch any day. OEF/OIF!!!
Greatest recruitment poster for the Coast Guard I saw were actual Coasties, on the beach in Corpus Christi, at 1pm on a Tuesday, hitting on your girlfriend. A sucky day in the coast guard was we were 4 hours late getting back to port from a kick-ass ship boarding, and it inconvenienced my workout routine. Same benefits, same uniforms, same pay, but I got to sleep on my own pillow most every night, meanwhile, you've established that you are professional-grade Rock/Paper/Scissoring some sweaty marine in a dank underground bunker for the last box of crayons. Wanna carry an actual MK18? Coast Guard. Wanna be scared shit-less by pre-opperational safety briefs? Coast Guard. Do you like apples? Well then eat some apples, WHEN YOU GET BACK TO DRY LAND THIS EVENING. Coast Guard baby. Wanna earn tax free combat-zone pay?.. well good luck with that.
As a tour tour hard combat Vietnam Vet who spent 12 years on the North Pacific commercial fishing, I vote for the CG---every single day they save lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VERY nicely done. The presentation was done from the standpoint of a strong knowledge of the material, and the narration moved right along. And because you had your thoughts organized, there were not too many of those exasperating "Uuuuuhhhh's" which punctuate so many UA-cam presentations. Job WELL done, Sir !
The 2 point really allows me to drop my weapon and go hands on with the old lady when she yells at me while clearing the house And by the way, Rangers invented UA-cam reviews
When I bought my first AR I put 550 threw the front sight just like he showed, I didn't know Rangers did that till years later. That's awesome! Respect from AZ
No, only if said Ranger was an inmate on cell block 4. He called it a fufu. We found out later he mass produced them for other inmate..ahem...i mean Rangers. Quite the lucrative business he made for being locked up. On second thought, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a Ranger. Incredibly resourceful with what little he had to work with.
I run my sling at the back of my rail for two reasons, both of which you mentioned. First is interference with the my grip and manipulating the switch for my light; second is hanging myself doing what you called the "bump", which I learned as a "hasty transition". I'm a big guy (6'4" with a big chest), so with my carrier on, I run out of sling if it's mounted forward on the rail.
A single point sling combined with S and S Precision’s Weaponlink works fairly well. An extra step if you need to quickly swap from primary to secondary, but great for sturdy rifle support in climbing scenarios.
You brilliant, beautiful man you! I've been struggling with finding a way to get my sling best attached to my B5 stock on my SR-16 for years. YEARS! I thought I had tried everything until I saw your SR-15 set-up. I immediately paused the video to do the same thing and it has already made all the difference. I was also just talking to my friend about making a video for the bump technique of switching shoulders and how I prefer that to a side arm... good stuff.
The Good Sir Knight i see we both adore daddy garand sir teehee never knew id find u down here at daddy garand's dank comment section... mmm.. i follow u in Twitterrrrrrr btw
I've only been watching his videos a few months now. Surprised I've never seen his stuff sooner. The madman is absolutely brilliant! Not many people you meet will leave you feeling smarter afterwards than before... Quite the opposite most times. XD
exactly!! i mean, i only operate in mom's basement like the others in the comment section peeps. and majority of that are with rifles that fire bbs. but hey, daddy garand has expanded my knowledge with his rich sticky load of lessons
I gotta thank you for this video cause I just got a new rifle and while I was deciding on single or double, I read the comments. Found out why people hate single point slings the easy way, n might have saved a nut.🤣
Always Adventurous yeah, someone from poop squad might talk about oversleeping, prairie dogging on the way to the terlet, and anal fisting themselves to make it.
My old CO was with 2nd Rangers.. he had us use a standard A2 sling, but used 5/50 around the buttstock to sling it from the top, then from the front sight post. Worked quite well.
A good way I found to set up the sling in case you're running anything like the magpul MS1 (similar to the frank proctor sling shown at the end) and want it as far as possible but cannot tie it to the bridge anymore for some reason or another is to tie some 550 cord between the end of your handguard and the bridge and make it quite tight, yet not too tight so that way it won't escape back over the handguards, but it'll still allow the sling some natural movement. Then just tie the sling right into the 550 cord and that's it. That works really well in case you have no front swivle and no QD mounts.
“Jobs that Matter” all day long. CG tactical lessons/tricks, two point cotton sling not fast to adjust (either to loose for climbing ladders or to tight for shooting with it on), A1 is too big for ship spaces (great for boat to boat fire, I guess), rifle mag pouches? Bandolier or pocket carry. Post 90’s still using rifles with a1 sights and triangular guards. Triangular guard was pretty good for use I think, seamed natural. Things have changed since, but there was something awesome about supper basic kit. Hand me downs and next to nothing? Ok, we will make it work.
The 4-6 half cooked hot pockets grandma brings me daily usually make for a fast paced mission up the basement stairs to the toilet, she wont let me keep a bucket next to my gaming station so this video has really changed my tactics for the better, thanks bruh.
You really want to go do some 2-gun competitions, where you're required to sling your rifle during the course of fire. It will learn you real quick how to do/not do your sling.
0:45 Navy vet, here. The Chair Force is my preferred branch to make fun of because I'm jealous of how nice y'all's stuff was compared to ours while I was in. I only had one encounter with the Coast Guard while I was in, and I don't tell the story because it makes them look competent, and we can't have that.
I'm glad you mentioned the thing with shorter handguards interfering with your support hand. I was having exactly that problem with an MP5 (~9" barrel) and the built in HK sling hook position on the front left of the handguard. It was constantly all up in my business. I swapped out the handguard for one that let me QD at the rear and it's a lot less cumbersome.
Ordered up a slingster. Updated model. There are a lotta choices for slings, but so far everyone Ive looked at up close cannot compare to these slings. Thanks man. Love your videos.
Got it today. Set it up and worked with it a while. Theres just not another out there that operates this easy. That pull tab really works great. Doesnt hang at all and slick both ways. Thanks Plaid Guy!!!
Garand Thumb, I am disappoint. You talk like you know the QD, but you don't bring up anti-rotation QD. Even airsofters know that anti-rotation is important so that you don't get it twisted up. I learned this in my mom's basement, sitting at the computer with my airsoft gun. jeez
I’m a right handed shooter and I’ve noticed in two point slings when having the front mount in the ejection port side it hugs your back a LOT tighter and feels so much more comfortable when moving around. The only downside is that when looking down sights the sling goes over the top of the rifle and can get in the way of your support hand. With the front sling mount on the opposing side of the ejection port it doesn’t get in the way as much but the rifle tends to bounce around and flop over a little when against my back. Are ejection port sided front sling mounts ever reasonable for a right handed shooter it is it just too much of a con that when aiming down sights it wraps over the top of the rifle messing with your support hand ? I’m not very experienced with rifles and and even newer to rifle slings. Any tips and opinions are appreciated.
In 1967 in Vietnam , our m 16 s had the green nylon m 14 slings , a lots of us took them off they would get hung up on the vines and limbs especially in the bamboo thickets
I love UA-cam. I was going to buy a Q-lock mount, I watched this, looked up my hand guard, and it has two, one in the front and back! One on each side so four actually ;) Henry Ford said one time, when being accused of being uneducated, and I'll paraphrase, "I don't need to fill my head with a bunch of information, if I have a question I push a button, and get someone in my office to give me the answer."
I was taught about adjustable slings in the late 70’s with the issue black sling and running 550 cord through the front sight and making it adjustable using prusic knots. It worked ok, that was about all.
.........I just use one of Willie Nelson's old guitar straps that he signed for me. #RedWhiteBlue #Mur-ijuan-ica Willie told me "Just remember, kid...if you ever run out of primary and transition to secondary...the strap will protect you"...then he lovingly placed it over my head and rested it on my neck with the gentleness of a thousand mothers. I said "thanks" and got the fuck outta there cause my contact high was too aggressive.

I was kind of hoping you'd go a bit more into sling techniques and "stowing" it when transitioning to pistol, long range stabilizing with the sling etc. one of the guys from my local 2 gun loves the ferro concepts and tightens it against his body when transitioning to pistol so the rifle doesn't rattle around a lot. I have a gear sector on my ak that does the same thing in a pinch but a bit more awkward. the switching sides was a nice tip, i'll have to try that at the match if I get a chance.

You have to bring your own waders
But i have floaties
I'm only 5'10" but was grandfathered in, so the standard issue was tactical ambidextrous floaties on each arm.
When I served in the Navy we referred to the Coast Guard as puddle pirates. Affectionately of course.
I knew a guy who got kicked out of the CG. Fucker was like a little Doberman Pinch, 5'4"
Hot head and jealous everyone was taller than him.
Watching this again in 2024. Sometimes you need a reminder of the basics. Thanks for all you’ve done for us man 🤙🏻❤️
Same here.
Which pouch should I put on my plate carrier to best hold my Lunchables? I get pissed everytime the straw on the Capri Sun gets cracked.

That's because the Coasties are a law enforcement agency. They don't need to be combat ready or within MilSpec parameters.
The 550 loop on the front sight goes back to MACV-SOG teams in Vietnam. The biggest advantage was that it didn't rattle or make noise like the traditional sling swivel did.
Appreciate the knowledge bomb
We just did it to carry the M203 easier.
Rzr2ffe negative. Coast Guard taught that to the Rangers during the French and Indian War. Well documented. Get your facts straight.
Maximum Ordinate :D
JDavis18 That's true. I should have added LRRPs too. Delta did it into the 80's and 90's
I just got a new magpul sling for my bcm and I had it bedazzled. Rangers lead the way like that.
You need to put in for your pathfinder patch.
All the Way
If you run a 3 point, you should keep a knife nearby, never know when it will go constrictor snake on you.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Love this comment man, "constrictor snake", had that happen to me actually.. now run 2 point.
Who the hell doesn't have a knife on them at all times?

I was army, I was always a two point sling guy. I still learned something from you video, thanks for making it.
Just remember, Bowe Bergdahl was was kicked out of CG boot camp for mental reasons. Then made Sergeant in the Army.
Matt 920 shhhhhhhhh
Matt 920 boom. Second hardest branch to get in to. Second only to the Crayon eating Marines. They're more physical, we're more mental.

After using a single point for years. And my junk playing Hakki sack with the barrel, I switch to a two point sling
Steve Martinez I started 2-point sling...love 2-point sling...think it's most ideal, but now use a 1-point sling
Another fella on YT said the single point sling was invented by a feminist to bust us in the junk!
My father served in the Coast Guard nothing but respect.
On the mk18 setup to fix the flopping issue when slinging it on your back: simply switch the arm that goes through the sling if that makes sense. Sept 2020.... interactions with another human is considered against the law in most jurisdiction. 😷
Jokes on you, those guys already know everything. They don't need to subscribe.
But why though?
My son just graduated from the Navy boot camp!! I'm so proud!!
Ok real talk here...We need garand thumb patches. youd make $
on a more comical note...we need garand thumb body pillows.
Ill bring it up to a friend of mine who makes patches in boogalootradingco
Lmao grand thumb body pillow....I’d buy this just for the luls
Garand thumb body pillow?!
Man that would be great for my collection
Literally subscribed for the coast card comment
No hate. Mostly envy of your post/duty stations. 7 MO. deployments overseas are a bitch! But the army had it worse 12-15 MO! Feel bad for the doggies.
Name one marine that can count to 20
Ha Coasties in da hizouse! But you forgot who does HRV's with DEA, Marshals, FBI, etc...heck hiding in the sand for drug runners. I'd take the CG than any other branch any day. OEF/OIF!!!
Silver Dino Gunnery Sgt. Ermey could count to 20!
The Magpul MS4 is still one of my favorite slings I've ever owned.
I know I'm almost a year late.....but this comment rules!
LMAO ! NOT X puddle patrol, (Navy shooter) but still, LMAO !
I just got a BFG Vickers with their QD latches. Love it!! Gucci as hell.
Mike always with the gems, im looking for what sling setup to get for my ar15. He makes deciding so much easier.
Thank you! This was very helpful and fun. I love the gentle ball breaking of fellow servicemen 🇺🇸.
The 2 point really allows me to drop my weapon and go hands on with the old lady when she yells at me while clearing the house
And by the way, Rangers invented UA-cam reviews
A little CG history-Douglas Munro. Just a man in a Higgins boat saving 500 Marines on Guadalcanal.
Before I joined the Army I worked commercial insulation on a few coast guard boats. Never seen so many dudes hiding in engine rooms. 😂
RupanRx better than hiding in port holes! Lol
Insulation to the army makes sense
Fuckin shammers
When I bought my first AR I put 550 threw the front sight just like he showed, I didn't know Rangers did that till years later. That's awesome! Respect from AZ
Rangers invented the Fleshlight.
MrApplejack1976 I think they just called it a butthole.
That explains the butthole version of the Fleshlight. Don't ask how I know that.
Jefari, is it as lucrative as melting and molding shampoo bottles into a pretty bulldog mouth? Think they go for 80 bucks a bottle!
MrApplejack1976 actually it was GROUP that invited it
I run my sling at the back of my rail for two reasons, both of which you mentioned.
Ironically, the USCG motto is Semper Paratus (Always Ready) and also the reason I dig into these videos ;-)
"HK hooks are preety outdated"
And here I am, using a 2qt canteen strap as a sling. Man, I've been living under a rock for the past 20 or so years
Hey, if it works for you, keep rocking it! No need to spend money if what you have works for you.
Ferro concepts slingster operated so freakin smooth on my rifle that I almost immediately bought one for all my rifles ( bolt actions, pumps ).
“Say whatever you want” dangerous words there bud 😂😂
Always Adventurous yeah, someone from poop squad might talk about oversleeping, prairie dogging on the way to the terlet, and anal fisting themselves to make it.
Oh, wait.....
My old CO was with 2nd Rangers.. he had us use a standard A2 sling, but used 5/50 around the buttstock to sling it from the top, then from the front sight post.
Worked quite well.
solid info
Dude, do you watch every single gun vid on UA-cam?
You're always here
@@destinytroll1374 He watches over us.
Indeed
Mrgunsgear is legit.
The two word man strikes again.

That needs to be a t-shirt
CG in the house! You guys sound jealous you didn't make the cut. It's ok ladies we'll keep the homeland safe and keep the beds warm at night ;)
Says the CG that never was posted on an icebreaker!
@@robertcoleman1765 no just one of the hardest working black hulls in the WORLD! WLM540
Reason Navy wives have babies? Coast Guard.
The 4-6 half cooked hot pockets grandma brings me daily usually make for a fast paced mission up the basement stairs to the toilet, she wont let me keep a bucket next to my gaming station so this video has really changed my tactics for the better, thanks bruh.
By the way bro. They're not slots. They're sexually liberated.
enough with the postmodernist pc while I'm 'trying' to clear my bowels
SLOTS! SLOTS EVERYWHERE! Oh Beevis, you're missed.
Slot floppies?
Ambrosia Terrebonne hahahaha good one
Slits?
"Improvise"? My brother, you just said the magic word. God bless you. RLTW
You really want to go do some 2-gun competitions, where you're required to sling your rifle during the course of fire. It will learn you real quick how to do/not do your sling.
This is a fact
IDK we had a CG det onboard for LEO drug ops, and they were pretty badass and cool. Loved working with them.
Most productive way to skip Math class
ian Provance Careful, don’t want anyone seeing the video and reporting you to the principal
Skipping class huh, sounds like marine corps material.
Edwardo Sapo I already enjoy eating crayons 👌🏾
So sad I didn’t have this guy back in school. ... wait.
I’m here to learn how Obi Wan Kenosha saved his own life with a sling.
Yeah, Kyle made a critical error that I noticed. He used a single point sling lol
Randomly Entertaining he’s still alive tho
@@xx_epicgaymer69_xx41 definitely proves that a single point is better than nothing
Well spoken, to the point and just enough humor to get attention.
“Sweet plaid”
Rock On, kids.
Rock On, Pastor Dave.
If you've ever used your tactical sling to carry a bunch of loaded diapers than go ahead and hit that like button
Thats funny as h×ll!!! I dont care who you are or if you like the video or not. Lmao!!
I learned this in my mom's basement, sitting at the computer with my airsoft gun. jeez
Lol sorry boo
I learned the “bump” as “SAS left handed”. Dig the video, thanks.
2 point sling is also the name for my basketball shot.
I blush when Daddy says I love you and I'm not expecting it
Always appreciate you sharing and helping me out . I always find something in your videos that helps me or educates me . Thanks !
Toilet squad inbound.
In 1967 in Vietnam , our m 16 s had the green nylon m 14 slings , a lots of us took them off they would get hung up on the vines and limbs especially in the bamboo thickets
Poop squad!
I genuinely do find these vidJeos informative. I just happen to be evacuating my bowels when they hit my notifications.
Ooooo oooooooooo!
Assemble!
You know it. The kids are screaming on the other side of the looked door.
Aaaaaauuuuuu!
I love UA-cam. I was going to buy a Q-lock mount, I watched this, looked up my hand guard, and it has two, one in the front and back! One on each side so four actually ;)
Henry Ford said one time, when being accused of being uneducated, and I'll paraphrase, "I don't need to fill my head with a bunch of information, if I have a question I push a button, and get someone in my office to give me the answer."
“Just kidding I love the coast guard.” Yeah that sounded super sincere
I was taught about adjustable slings in the late 70’s with the issue black sling and running 550 cord through the front sight and making it adjustable using prusic knots. It worked ok, that was about all.
I've gotten to a point where I recognize half of the products on your guns.

Outstanding video, direction, information, etc.
Thanks! This is the sort of stuff I enjoy learning from UA-cam.
