A guy misses this channel
Yes he does!👍👍 I was just checking over here last night to see if I had missed something.
A guy could watch another guy all day lol
I did ac/ heating for 20 + years in tenn , kentucky and fla never seen a duct sock before very cool
I’ve got to agree, “I miss this Chanel as well”. I’m happy he’s got HVAC in his sho. Fully enjoy watching VGG, and VGL
Poor feller!😉
If the septic tank sunk that much I'd bet the pipes disconnected. I'd imagine that may cause more problems and might be worth a few shovels to take a peek under the skirt
That is what I was thinking too! Better check the plumbing out
Ya, that should never settle that much. I’d be calling the company, and they can come warranty the install.
Any septic tank should be bedded in and locked into place, no settling should ever occur. Get it looked at asap.
Incorrect installation from the go. Verify everything that company did for you because….
I’d say the surface wasn’t compacted properly and the water pooled and settled the sand. Tank probably didn’t move
Derek instead of direct exhaust to the outside you should consider a dust collector. It will capture all the dust and you recirculate the air inside the shop. Remember that whatever you exhaust you'll have to make-up. The air will come from outside either trough the HVAC outside air intake or via garage doors sills and any cracks in the building shell and you'll have to heat and cool that air.
The duct connection to the table looks like about 12in diameter perforated duct meant for a dust collector. You need a lot of static pressure to pull the recommended airflow (I'm going to guess in the neighborhood of 1000 cfm at 1.5in static. A barn fan (prop) trough the wall won't generate that kind of airflow, on top of that you'd be exhausting 2 1/2 of your 5 tons of cooling.
Check your table manuals and talk to your HVAC contractor. I am an air balancing technician by trade and that is my recommendation for you to really save $$.
Yep, reason I use dust collection in my wood shop. Sucks when it comes time to dump it lol.
Everything you said makes sense and should be taken seriously i think but the reason i wouldnt want to just pump it outside is because its steel dust and it will get all over his shop and rust it as its blown all over the tin! I would have a serious filter setup on the exhaust side of that table!!
Does it also make sense to install a drop ceiling?
Simple dust collection is not what you need for a cutting table like this. The point of venting it outside is because of the deadly gasses it creates in the room. It takes a filtering system specifically designed for this type of application if you are wanting to re-circulate the air.
@@toysoldier46552 in my shop, I have one 2 hp dust collector hooked up at the end of my line of tools (just the blower portion is inside). I piped it outside and into the top of an old 500 gallon oil tank I installed the top of the dust collector on top of the tank to allow the pressure to escape. I cut a door in the side down low. When I have to empty it I shovel it out and into cardboard boxes and pack them tight like a brick. The boxes are then thrown into my outdoor boiler to heat the shop. Any spillage is outside and the 4 winds take it away.
I love seeing Derek do good for himself and his family because they’re good people and they deserve it.
Dunno about deserving, but they have certainly earned it!
@@ShadowsOnTheScreen he earned it through hard work so yeah he definitely deserves it
Even just removing the humidity from the air will make it more comfortable
My friend has a dehumidifier for her apt, I've emptied the bucket on it for her after a day or so and its full, it's probably 2 gallon bucket, but it blows pretty. Warm air out the back from the. Motor, I can't tell if it's actually helping . She's also has a portable ac, but She's got high ceilings, it never feels cool in there to be . But, high ceilings ,hard to cool, shes also on the top floor, and obviously heat rises
once you get your coffers filled again you might want to consider a solar installation to offset and be able to crank the HVAC. it's getting really cost effective these days, and with your giant roof on the shop you could get a pretty big system. alternately you could even do ground mount thats high enough to park cars under and keep them out of the rain
So when it’s cloudy it don’t work 😳🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 !
What does large hail do to large solar panels? Just curious.
@@aliasfred it's not a problem, panels are build and tested to withstand quite the beating. Got ours about 8 years ago, paid for itself since last year and free energy since then. During summer we run our AC and still give power back to the grid.
@@davidcatlette9697 sure but when it's cloudy the sun doesn't heat up the shop that much either. In my experience the lowered electric output during cloudy days matches the reduced heat input on said cloudy days.
@@davidcatlette9697
Right...
Couple of things.
Solar still produces when its cloudy, just not as well as when it's sunny.
You don't use solar 'instead' of grid power. You use it for when the sun 'does' shine and grid power the rest of the time.
For a place like this, any sort of sunny day would run the heat or cooling for free. That's how it works for me.
Hey Derek, I'm a HVAC tech up in canadada. I completely understand trying to keep costs down, but in my past experiences if you don't have that wall up between the two halfs of the shop. You should run both, your building needs what it needs for heat, you either run one almost all the time or end up running both half as much. You'll use more energy heating with one then heating with both.
I’m in Canada. Also I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he’s going with Electric units and not gas unit. But you are correct from what you said one unit will run over time to compensate for the other unit being off so it’s best to run both at the same time to equal out consumption.
@@Montana_ef he probably doesnt have more than 10 days a year where it’s below 20°F so heat pumps work great and are more efficient
Air to air heat pumps are the way to go, in his environment they are perfect. I'm in manitoba and suggest to any costumer with electric already to go air to air heat pump. Only other thing about these heat pumps he put in, looks like they are 13 SEER, which is the most lowest on efficiency for Canada. Wonder if there is a lowest for us. I always try to go at least 15 but price starts to climb quick
@@Turbochargedtwelve No.
@@Montana_ef HVAC contractor here and I was wondering why too. I looked up Lewisburg and it gets into the 20s a lot throughout winter there. Heat pumps are good for warmish places. California, Phoenix. I mean they will heat the place but man will the electric bill be a beast.
Nice job! Glad y’all are able to make this upgrade. Will make a world of difference! Y’all have come a long ways and from a guy who’s watched ya since before you had 30k subs I’m proud of how far things have come. Keep it up!! 👊🏻
Thanks so much!!
I remember back when Derek had 100 subs, feels like so long ago but it really wasn't. Great guy and family oriented, of course he was going to succeed.
I was his first sub lol
Make sure you insulate the ductwork on the outside and the garage doors
The exterior ducting is internally insulated. That was interesting to type.
Its liined on the inside
Derek, with all the fans and new heat pumps you absolutely have to look at solar panel on the roof to off set the expense. No batteries just panels and a grid tie system. An absolute must.....
Way more responsibility but way more fun for all the little grips. You keep up doing what you do and we’ll keep supporting you folks.
Ex father in law had a pretty good idea with heating/cooling half of his garage at a time. He bought a 40 or 50 foot long roll of plastic, hung it from the ceiling and rolled and unrolled his 'wall' whenever he needed it. eventually hooked it up to some kind of small motor to do the turning of the roll but he still uses it every summer/winter in MN. He made sure to get a clear plastic to help with light because he had minimal lighting and dark walls.
Derrick have the septic guys come out and take both lids off of the septic tank. Have them check the inlet and outlet pipes. Inlet tee and outlet tee are at different levels inside of the tank. The tank moved a lot, it probably crushed the pipes or pulled the tees lower in the tank, and that will make it malfunction.
Hi Derek. Been working in the shop for over 50 years now. When Dad and I would work in the 1970s, alls we had was a couple trouble lights and a salamander kerosene heater, for when it was really cold. (In Wisconsin). Like you said. Just toxic after a few hours. Dad passed away in 1991. @ only 63. Miss him everyday. Over the years the shop has improved tremendously a little at a time. Some days I feel guilty that he didn’t have what I do now for a shop set up. I know though, that he’s along side me everyday I’m out there.
Bless you and the family. You’ve earned everything you’ve got my friend. Enjoy the fruits of your hard work!
*You, Jessica an the little humans work really hard.* So y'all deserve to be comfortable at work and have nice stuff. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
This is going to make life a lot better for you. Looking at your building though, save for spray foam. Just do it. You're going to lose a TON of heat out of that essentially R3 building. 15 Gal of diesel a day in the shop? YIKES...Might be break even on those two 5 ton units! :)
Others said it, I hope you had somebody check your septic tank and pipes. That's a heck of a drop you had...hope the pipes didn't break because that's a mess...
Any one who has twisted wrenchs knows the joy of the cold and hot weather. The old fingers get stiff and the brain gets slow. The good thing about the cold fingers is when you bust your knuckles it doesn't hurt. They are already pained.
In the shop I used to work in we would hang heavy mil plastic from the ceiling to the floor to segregate the workspace from the cold storage part and we only heated 1 side. It worked surprisingly well in the North Dakota winters.
You beat me to it. Exactly this. If you look around you might find old billboard signs made of a heavy tarp material on the cheap to use. May not be pretty, but sure will help with the power bills.
A buddy of mine, had some kind of bubble wrap, type stuff that he would hang down, in the winter time, to help contain the heat. I believe he said it was solar pool covers. Whatever it was, I know it worked real well.
I’ve used the heavy, clear-ish vinyl strips (like you see in meat locker) There’s kits out there. Mr Google is your friend.
Setting the outdoor units on the ground makes them easy to service and you didn’t have to rent a crane to put them on the roof.
I use 6mil fire rated poly in a 20 x 100 toll
Hopefully it helps a ton to stop water pipes from continually bursting and freezing Derek lools great @Vice Grip Lodge
Congrats on the new HVAC. You'll never regret it. The older I get, the more I dislike discomfort!
The soft ducting is very cool looks really good Derek @Vice Grip Lodge
It's been a fun journey watching your brand grow over the years. You deserve the amenities like this. Lord knows you've earned it!
I’m sweating something fierce when I set the heat at 64 in my garage, should be perfect!
This feller’s always grateful to go along on the ride that life presents to you, and also for the fact that you can be more comfortable and healthier in inclement weather with these upgrades. Be well friends!!
First time I went on vacation maybe a month after installing Nest thermostats my buddy came over to feed my dog fortunately and the AC switched to heat by itself and the house was 100 degrees inside. Keep an eye on those Nests.
As an HVAC Installer and Tech. This feller enjoyed this episode! 👌👍🤘
It's fun, and I don't know the dimensions of that building but that seems like a underestimated amount of HVAC for that size building just eyeballing it. High ceilings, low insulation, huge roll up doors. Hopefully I am wrong on that.
Definitely should get rid of those Nest thermostats though, garbage
The sock duct and the big ass fans do a great job.
You show me a feller who deserves more blessings and I'll show you bullshit because I've never seen a more wholesome person deserve what he's earned so much. Keep doing what you're doing. You've earned every bit. We're all in your corner
Derek, you should think about setting up some solar on that nice big roof. Would pay for itself fast and there's a good chance you could find yourself a sponsor to help. Power company might even help.
You and your family deserve all of that! When I was injured and unable to work(and therefore help support my family with my wife) I was down. I worked through just about all of your videos on both channels and they were one hell of a pick me up! Thanks so much for all that you do. I means more than you could ever know! God bless.
You may want to consider solar on the roof of that big garage to power all those heat pumps. Maybe partner up with one of the UA-cam solar channel folks, make some videos of the design and installation.
Awesome content 👏... spray foam will make a world of difference in hvac expenses
I bet a guy would be much appreciative of a neighbor such as yourself. Hard to find now a days!! Perfect!!
Congratulations, not only are Goodman Made in the U.S.A., they are also one of the most efficient units around. Even more efficient then a Trane. Great choice Derrick.
That’s awesome. Guy like you works your butt off deserves some comfort. Cant wait to see more content on both channels. Keep wrenching my friend!!
Very enjoyable watching dad & lad working together. Your sons are blessed to
have such an awesome father
A fella is getting a bit flash lol ,heat and air ,well done Derek you deserve all the success that comes your way ,keep up the good work .
I also have watched since the red shop truck days when you installed the compressor and other stuff on it. I’m proud of all you’ve accomplished and have dreams of doing something similar shopwise if I can ever make enough green backs to fund it!
we need to get ya another million subs 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
appreciate that
I know it's not cheap but I would definitely do some more insulating in the future and that will definitely help even more.
I like the green or white foam insulation boards..they're cleaner than fiberglass. But holy shit have you seen the prices? I live in NH, I went and got green foam board for a job we were doing , Lowe's in gilford,NH and probably all the other Lowe's, charged like $60 a sheet!
Might want to insulate the outside ducts also sir. Wrap them in fiberglass wraping.
This is awesome! You have worked long and hard for a long time. You deserve to be comfortable.
Full complete control of the thermostats , every man’s dream.
Hehehe
Ya got it going on there buddy.
Nice video Derek👍 awesome to see you getting some Heat and air set in the shop. I’ve been a technician myself for 11 years in the residential HVAC field myself and only word of advice I would like to put out there for you is to beware of the Nest thermostats, I change those out rather frequently due to a multitude of different issues. consider a Honeywell WiFi stat which will have the same benefits of the nest with a much better reputation 👌
7ish years for me and same here, I've had a nest cut voltage randomly for y for a split second and start right back up.
New install we did, they wanted to keep the thermostat.
Old unit lost its compressor, so did the new unit.
Nest is best
In the trash lol
Yes! either the “y” signal, “o/b” signal (if it’s a heat pump) or even “g” signal I’ve seen those intermittently drop out. Best in the trash is right. Lol
Agree, my Honeywell thermostats work great and have been solid for years. I monitor and run my lake house (75 miles away) and home from my iPhone. I chose Honeywell over the Nest. Having said that, I hope your Nest thermostat works great and is dependable for years to come.
I just read a comment someone said they put a nest in , they went on vacation, and luckily their friend went over to feed their dog, the nest switched itself from AC to heat by itself , and their house was like 100 inside. Poor dog
Spent many a minute or 12 warming the ol wrench turners in front of the heaters. As soon as the fingernails arent blue anymore, then back to workin. Puttin heat in the ol project barn was the best decision.
Educational and fun, what more can a guy ask for? Keep up the great work!
Nice one, Derek! Now you just need a bit of insulation, and solar on the roof to run it all.
You’ve got quite a bit of roof area. Ever think of adding solar to take the sting out of the electricity bill? That spray foam will help a ton. My friend has a couple metal buildings here in TX and the foam really makes a difference.
Solar will also keep the sun off the roof, lowering the heat load.
@darkwood777 Only if the price of electricity remains the same and inflation doesn't bottom out the dollar. In the case of inflation you will wish you had a backup plan..
@darkwood777 Are you factoring in the 30% tax credit from the federal government or the increase in property value? Some reports have that as much as 4%. Plus, electricity is not static in value. I agree it’s not for everyone, but if you run all the numbers (and if you can pay cash for the system), it can be favorable.
In hindsight, maybe leaving that end wall up when you expanded the shop would have been an idea. Could have cut an opening big enough for items to pass through while still being able to enclose one half of the shop if needed.
Super cool (meaning warm) to see you'll be more comfy in the shop. I can't imagine filming at 38 degrees and pretending like you're comfortable out there.
You've worked so hard for this. Congratulations to you and the family. 👍👍👍
Well done. So happy for a Guy. Can't wait to see the storm shelter go in to keep the fam safe.
Last summer was my first summer with central HVAC setup in my shop. I live in the same area north Alabama/ south Tennessee. Summers are brutal. Man what a game changer. That & 2 post lift was best investment I've ever made as a serious automotive enthusiast.
ditto the two post lift.
Derek your main water valve into the shop can be changed out for one you can control from the Internet as well. no expensive to do either.
Really happy for you and the family that got to have that installed. I too was impressed with the finished duct work, it looks sharp!
Oh hey, I recently received quotes over the weekend for air conditioning the home. With my moving to part time now, I'll be spending a lot more time at home, and I want to be comfortable, especially with the terminal illness.
Y’all deserve a comfortable shop! Great video, glad VGL is warm!
Long time looker of VGG, 1st time commenter... I'm an old timer "Massachewits" Lic Electrical digical fella and just wanted to say your electric digical fellas did an awesome job on the electric work!
The hvac work looks great man. Great addition to the shop.
Nice addition. If it were me .. I would insulate those metal ducts that are outside. You're radiating hot or cold right out into the outside which equals $$$$.
My parents did spray foam insulation in their new home build. I was absolutely blown away on how great it does. Middle of summer and the attic was extremely comfortable. Middle of winter and the crawlspace was nice. Buddy that build a ginormous shop did it also and it was a huge difference also. If i ever have the choice or able to recommend, i say do it if possible.
So nice to see you will be warm in your workshop and when you go and get the cars can you put them on a trailer and bring them back to do them in the warm workshop instead of working in the cold I love this channel and what a wonderful family you all are good luck with all you do
They did a great job with that installation Derek. Looks good 👍
So happy that after all these years you will be comfortable in winter and summer. You and your beautiful family deserve to be comfortable. All of you surely have earned all the good things that are happening for you, and I am elated than you can have them.
It’s awesome seeing these guys progressing from having to work on your back all the time to getting shops and lifts and all the creature comforts. I never understand the hate some of these other guys get from people when there channels grow and are able to afford things to make their lives easier.
It’s 99% jealousy. 1% just dumb people that think if you spend money on something like concrete you’ve sold out and you’re now lazy. Derek is literally doing what is common folk do. Save up get something new… work more, save up, get something new again.
Clear sheet plastic, drop cloth, from the ceiling down to the floor to section off the main shop and storage. Staple 2x4s to the plastic for weight.
Inexpensive wall that allows light to pass through.
Nice edition to the shop.
If you wanna get the most outta each unit I would consider getting the outside duct work spray foam and wrapped. And also put a awning over each unit to keep the water from pouring into them since they are under the eve
A gutter maybe... No awnings or deflectors over condensing units..heat will be routed back to the coils
Hvac tech here.
65-68 thats my goldilocks zone. Building is getting real nice Derek.
Hope you got the drainage issues all taken care of because those units will be toast if they get flooded...
3 foot of water would wash my house and 90% of the state away
5 "tons" of A/C is ~17.5 kW of cooling power. 10 "tons" of A/C = 35 kW. To be honest I can't get over the fact that getting the shop insulated is less cost effective than installing lots of heat pumps, the cost of energy is so different in Europe than in the US.
I personally work for an HVAC company and if it were me, I'd do about 75 in the summer (especially being a 5 ton on each side) and 60 in the winter. And I'd also just leave it set at that temp. If you keep changing it back and forth or turning it on and off when you need it, you're gonna be using more electricity than if you'd just leave it on at a set temp.
Congrats DEREK......STAY WARM!!!!!!! and Cool!!!!
People definitely don't think about how busy it gets when things are going well.
The better things are going, the busier you get!
Im enjoying this channel a lot!
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
Black HVAC ducts look like exhaust tailpipes. Cool!!!
consider a waste oil heater with all the oil changes you got to be doing. help out when it gets really cold.
Derek man, you have such a talent as a narrator and content maker.. this was really cool to watch! I think that you could do a video of cooking hot dogs and it would be awsome!💁♂️ nice touch including your boy fixing his bike.👌 Keep up the goodss workingss!
even if the A/C could just knockdown the humidity will make a huge difference. Maybe consider tinting the windows on the new side to keep the heat out? Did you sort out the flooding issues behind the shop? Maybe a guy needs a lean to along the back?
God Bless You Derek, Jessica, family and the HVAC team! Woot! Warmin' & Chillin' nice... real nice! Our family keeps you all in our prayers.
Hi Derek 👋 Nice video 📹 and workmanship!!! Sorry about the rim and barring 's !!! And the flood !!! Have all groups tour the garage of the OLYMPICS THOSE ARE SOME BIGGGG RINGS 💍 👌 😀 ONE MIGHT BE CALLED EMOJI
For your shop divider, look into getting some used billboard vinyls-they're heavy duty, huge, and cheap.
Glad to see a feller finally has some creature comforts in the shop!
I would like to send you some pictures of a canopy. That fits the John Deer and makes it really nice to work in the wind and rain and keeps the cold out. But I don't know where to send it. So keep up the great work yin's guys
Awesome that good people still exist that are willing to help a guy out without the guy asking for help, they did it just because…. The hvac guy sees a good dude in Derrick and hooked him up that’s awesome!!
I have heating and AC in my 18 x 24 shop. Man, you are gonna love it I know I do.!!!! And with all your hard work dude you totally deserve it!! Enjoy!
G'day Derek.! being the old war horse that you are, with all your ailments, back, knees, shoulders, wrists, etc. This new warmth in the shop will certainly help with your aches & pains. Best wishes. John, Perth, Western Australia
Look at when schools get updated, big heavy gym and dorm curtains would probably work perfectly. Custom tarp shops for boats and trucks could do something similar.
pro-tip, on my bench grinder I dangle big magnet from a speaker or something near the discharge, it doesn't catch all the grinding dust but it gets a majority of it, then I just peel it off into the trash.
Now they have the super duper magnets, molybdenum magnets, they might work in attracting metal from your discharge.
Congratulations!
Is it just me? From what I can see on your video, it doesn't look like your building's insulated. With enough solar on that huge roof area, and enough insulation, roof and walls, (maybe R-25 or so), your electrical bill would take a terrific nosedive. You're trying to heat & cool an enormous volume. Beautiful building!!!
What more can a guy ask for. Comfort and a porch ta sit n watch the clouds go by once in while.
A feller actually noticed the ducts on the main channel awhile back, glad to see you made an episode to share the experience with us!
I am genuinely interested and love the talk about the cost of business. A guy has a job to do, and that job takes $$ to get done. I don’t take it as complaining, I think it’s great content!
This channel is the behind the scenes work/family stuff and I love it.
Damn that vice grip pick-up is badass. Welcome to the club those units are wonderful
Should get one of those plastic curtains, like for a welding shop, or clear ones like a meat shop for the freezer instead of a door. They can be a bit thinner if needed so it's more pliable to fold. Just an idea
Love the fact you show behind the scenes of what it takes. Kinda wish you would show more of it. Help explain why you decide to make the choices you make.
In the 80's I talked Mack Trucks into putting up ceiling fans, we had 18ft ceilings at the peak. After putting them in, we had to
lower the furnaces 8*. We did not have the Big Ass fans like you have, ours were actually experimental and looked like airplane propellers. Smart move!
Beats the heck out of rubbing those sticks together to make a fire to heat the shop. Enjoy the comfort Derek......You and the family deserve it👍
Derek I would check into a curtain wall. They're kind of cheap and you can get a lot of different varieties and I'm just trying you a temporary curtain wall to divide it so you. Don't have to cool the whole 9 yd. I know it wanna hold all the cool but it'll hold the majority
Thanks!
Fever and Chills, the luxury is more than most have in their cars. 👌😘 Great video 2x👍
Derek make sure to buy enough APC backups for your server/security if you haven’t already. Especially with your travel schedule. Stay online even if power cuts for any reason. (And secure them)
