Awesome to hear this song...wish they would pull it out more. Guitar work is amazing and Joe's voice is incredibly solid after all these years. Doesn't always have the range (none of them do as they get old) but wow....impressive. He digs deep to hit "He's got a bullet that carries your name!!" and "Oh No, No, No!" and nails it multiple times through the song.
Fantastic to have the HQ Audio pulled in with all the vocal tracks being so clear. But that's just pulled directly off the mics.....meaning that's whats going in and then coming out the sound system. Go listen to the album version and then flip to this.....so close 40 years later.....and just so technically solid. A super underrated, overlooked song from Pyromania. This one might not have been as radio friendly back in the day but tremendous live. Also, I always thought they missed it by not releasing 'Comin' Under Fire' as another big radio song. That song is really solid with strong variation in guitar work, great chorus, and ripping solo. Could have/should have been another big single off Pyromania.

Great recording! One of the things I noticed they did different on DHTH from back in 88, Steve used to start the opening riff and Phil and Sav would join in about 5-10 sec in, as opposed to now they all start at the beat which I'm guessing is how the album track went. Still really cool of them to bring this one back. Thanks to Phil for making the solo recognizable.

Don’t ever hear viv moaning. He’s only been in the band 28 years now.🙄leppard is more than just playing guitar. They have the best blend of backing vocals,of any band on the planet. viv is an integral part of that. He’s said on numerous occasions. Being in leppard isn’t about being an Olympian athlete at your instrument. To me leppard is about 5 guys who really get on, no ego bullshit going on.Just having fun! Vivian is an amazing guitarist, I’ve seen him play with Thin lizzy. Solo after solo. I just think leppard is a different animal, especially when they play the greatest hits set.Viv looks more than happy to me.

The link below will show the real musical and lyrical genius of this band in action. His touch with his trmolo kahler was sublime and geez he was steamin.
    ua-cam.com/video/Y-2rJHaTWFg/v-deo.html
If Leppard fans 'really' want to know 'how' this truly epic song is done then I suggest y'all google "Dep Leppard In The Round Colorado, Gods of War" 1988-1989.
For what you will see is how this song will ALWAYS be remembered as the way it should be played. Vivian is a beast, his DIO days showed the world a young tearaway guitarist who just blew the arena crowds apart. But Steven Maynard "The Riffmaster" Clark was a VERY different guitarist. To each his, her own but "Steamin" just blew crowds away on this song, TLFL, Billy, the opening and ride out heavy dirty Gibson LP Custom triple pick up Kahler tremolo on "Photograph" and so much more.
You can clearly see here Vivian cannot even come close to replicating 'how' Steve played. But moreover, Steve's guitar parts were so intricate, and as Steve Brown from Trixter who filled in for Collen once said "the way Steve created guitar parts was incredibly intricate, they're sliced up into boxes", or as his best friend, brother Phil noted about Steve's guitar writing, constructing his chords, melodies, harmonies, hooks, bends and riffs "Steve was able to create a Japanese garden of musical wonderment".
This above is not helped by Viv using his [about time too] Gibson signature LP Custom, as he's now tremolo less, and GoW needs a tremolo, and Phil has, is compensating as he does with this song and most of the set list since Viv reverted back to a fixed bridge LP. Just check the above version against the Colorado version live, apples and oranges.
I am in NO way putting Vivian down period. He has taken a back seat in this band and imo plays Collen and his inane shredding off a short break, but they both work well together. But even Viv has humble, honest as he is has said only in 2019 "I still can't play GoW". And he added, much to Sav and Elliot's annoyance no doubt "90% of what we play Steve left us". GoW is arguably, with TLFL "The Riffmasters" best work. If only he'd lived, the technological changes he's have been able to use, the avenues he'd maybe have taken. Phil when asked this question suggested Steve may well have gone into the music for film area, as he was interested apparently in this area. But you want a shiver up your spine from a true rock star strapped low who oozed cool and owned the stage? Look up the above concert.

Viv should of learned the actual solo instead of improvising the first part. The first part of the solo is the best.

    • @williambroadstreet3353
      @williambroadstreet3353 4 роки тому +3

Stephen...Viv's playing does not even come close to the great mans guitar parts on this song and so many others, Vivian is a fucking beast, yes true many complain he's stepped back, but his side band lets Viv really let loose and play his more natural carefree style which has made him a true legend, and Collen and his for me infuriating boring 'shredding' has taken many of "The Riffmasters" parts, the ride out solo here above is a case in point, watch the 'In The Round' Colorado concert and you will see 'how' Steve played this song. And GoW which the extremely humble, and just genuinely nice bloke Vivian is has said verbatim "90 per cent of what we play Steve left us....I still cannot play GoW". How many guitarists that can even come part close to Vivian would admit freely to this? Sweet fucv all.
It is infuriating to me [only me] that Collen's taken over critical Steve Clark parts, the ride out solo in 'Photograph' another.
Viv ditched his Charvels for his original and first guitar ever bought a LP well over a decade and a half now so Collen's vibrato Floyd work is critically still needed to give the set list what it must have, the tremolo is a critical aspect of Leppard's set list.
I've posted in many times and will again to try and provide context, Steve Brown from 'Trixter' who has filled in for Phil a few times said it best for mine when he said of "Steamins" guitar parts..."Steve created guitar parts in boxes, it is extremely difficult to replicate". Bang, spot on, Steve's gift was in being this bands primary song writer, his ability to create music his best mate Phil said "Steve had the ability to create a Japanese garden of musical wonderment". And he did. Add in strapped VERY low, he dazzled on stage, he OWNED t5he stage zipping around, whirling around, and with his twin red/white with Kahler 18 string Razors, Steve had a waist as thin as Sid Vicious, thin as.
So we have been stuck with the above for some time. The real value of "The Riffmaster
" I submit is his gift to the world, future generations and those that saw him live, I sadly did not, was only a small kid, but he has gifted this band a back catalogue to live off. Elliot and Sav would NEVER admit to this, but facts are facts, evidence is evidence and Leppard's lack of any real chart success post the great man passing is evidence. Steven Maynard Clark remain priceless, like the crown jewels his loss remains incalculable, you cannot quantify it. But Leppard should be revered and admired for many things, one key aspect I'd argue is unlike Crue, in name only KISS, and other bands these blokes sing ALL their vocals. NO backing vocals at all. Now 'that' is rock n roll.

I've been covering singing these songs for almost 30 years. Its nit easy at all. Your voice will crack eventually. IDGAF! THE CLAIRITY ISNT THERE on Joe BUT THAT'S VOCAL STRAIN OF ALL THOSE PERFORMANCES, AGE, SMOKING. ETC. The fact he can still hit all those highs effortlessly, but even though sounding a little strained in the clarity of the throat. He is still singing from his diagram and not his head voice and it still sounds really good. Band is tight. Give the guy the f#cking respect he deserves and earned. He is still a show stopper.
