Gesturing towards decolonial futures by Professor Vanessa Andreotti

In this seminar, Professor Andreotti will present an overview of the work of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures Arts/Research collective and discuss her book "Hospicing modernity: Facing humanity's wrongs and the implications for social activism".
The seminar will invite participants to consider the impact of modernity on our collective existence, including: how it has kept us "wired" to its promises and comforts; how it has imposed limitations on the ways we can see, feel, relate, desire, hope and imagine; how it has led us to deny the violence and unsustainability that are required for it to exist, as well as our interdependence and the depth and magnitude of the mess we are in; how it has encouraged us to create narcissistic delusions about our sense of self importance and our perceived entitlements, leaving us unequipped to face the challenges of our times; and how it has untethered us from the realities of the planet, and the fact that our current mode of existence can cause our own extinction. Participants will also be invited to reflect on the role of education in reproducing and/or interrupting these patterns of socialization.
