    What helped me a lot was learning a bunch of triad patterns (I mean, just playing three notes) - not just the patterns, but the which is the first, third, fifth etc. That "aha" moment when you can visualize exactly which notes chords have in common or which are just a semitone away etc will change your playing. chords, inversions and also open voices , voice leading etc. Sound like scary music theory, but its isn't really.

    • @mark7592
      @mark7592 4 роки тому +3

      I'm starting to get more and more into triads and inversions. Now it almost feels like strumming those basic chord patterns sounds so dull. I think Paul might have a video about it. I think most rock/pop songs actually use mostly triads and some added notes, doubled notes are just unnecessary. It opens so much more stuff about playing. And like you said, it's not that hard.

    • @reneeschke
      @reneeschke 4 роки тому +1

      Any examples for these triad patterns?

    • @mark7592
      @mark7592 4 роки тому +2

      @@reneeschke Try this for example. Also Paul's videos about Frusciante, Hendrix and Mayer have some stuff about triads. Of course you can just google the patterns also. ua-cam.com/video/-XJXbxTMkUQ/v-deo.html

      Triads are heaven! I'm just getting through that "aha" moment and I already created a kind of Joe Pass/Wes Montgomery chord progression and I just love it!

    • @kennethbgoodin
      @kennethbgoodin 4 роки тому +1

      I've been doing this as well, making my own triads out of different positions on the neck using just 3 strings. I have the major scale and all notes across first 12 frets written down for quick reference.

    Thanks, Paul. Many “musicians” don’t appreciate the richness of the slash chords and rely upon the base player to direct the chord progression. Realizing the beauty the slash chord is an “a-ha” moment for many guitarists. The challenge is to subvert the tendency for laziness.

I would just ignore the slash and play them as the standard chord. Thank you for showing me what they are and how they can be notated. It makes so much sense! I focus in on the structure of your lessons and small ways you edit the videos to make them digestible. They make for a good example of quality online lessons. I also think back to how many takes I have to do in order to keep a conversational tone in my lessons, and imagine these must take you ages to record.

    Wow!! It is the first time that I understand a video in English without a doubt !!
    For this reason I also want to say that I entered the video because I understood that it was about the chords used by the guitarist slash !!
    But it doesn't matter, the video has been totally enlightening, interesting, well explained and I'm going to put it into practice right now !!
    Thank you very much!!

    As you discussed While My Guitar... and the Am/G, Am/F#, Am/F I wondered why you weren't grabbing the bass note with your thumb instead of alternating the position of the Am chord. Using your pinky for G bass and using the thumb for the F# and F makes more sense to me.

    I absolutely agree! While not wishing to ever disappear into a realm of jazz chordage, root/fifth/root/third chords are just asking for a bit added colour from (shock horror) other notes! It's like discovering The Beatles after only ever listening to metal.
