I spent my whole life protecting my sister from my parents and the things I had to go through. I know I failed and ill have to live with that for the rest of my life. But the day my sister left for college far away, I felt this weird relief. I thought it was something selfish but this song made me see it a completely different way. I listened and watched his performance and then watched his compelling interview with 'Huckabee' as Jimmy opened the diary of his life thus far. How did 'this' happen...The four & perhaps the most important differences between Jimmy's story and mine is J can sing like a bird, has found peace, I am decades older and still searching. Having cried a river today I finally sense a sign of hope. An inspiration or what. I'll never forget this day.

I think I read that Jimmy wrote this song not about himself and a woman ,but for his step-sister(or foster sister). She was in an abusive situation with her partner, and Jimmy wrote this song as encouragement to her to be strong though she loved the man.So sweet!

About 6 months after a breakup is the time to listen to this song, it'll be really cathartic. Don't listen to it right after a breakup, your mindset won't be in the right place because you're not ready to move on and it'll just make you more miserable.
This song sometimes reminds me of my ex. He's still in my life because our daughter lives with me and while he at times gets on my nerves, I've learned to accept him how he is. I divorced him for a reason, and I no longer resent him for not changing for the better. Acceptance of someone releases a lot of pent up feelings that need to go away. It's healthier that way, and easier to move on.

After 21 years, two bonus sons, a daughter & now two grandbabies I've tried so hard to keep it together. The last 7 being really hard but it takes more than one person. There's only so much I can give & do. I feel this song all the way to my soul right now. I've always loved it but never understood it this deeply. The one thing he's taught me the last 7 years is me & the kids will be ok. He can stay wherever it is that keeps him from here. I really wish he'd really be there for them though. But I've come to learn I can't make him. It just takes from their & my time and sanity to try. Just stay!

How did 'this' happen...The four & perhaps the most important differences between Jimmy's story and mine is J can sing like a bird, has found peace, I am decades older and still searching.

I think I read that Jimmy wrote this song not about himself and a woman ,but for his step-sister(or foster sister). She was in an abusive situation with her partner, and Jimmy wrote this song as encouragement to her to be strong though she loved the man.So sweet!

This song helped me realize it was necessary to get out of a bad marriage and that I (and my boys) would be ok.
This song sometimes reminds me of my ex. He's still in my life because our daughter lives with me and while he at times gets on my nerves, I've learned to accept him how he is. I divorced him for a reason, and I no longer resent him for not changing for the better. Acceptance of someone releases a lot of pent up feelings that need to go away. It's healthier that way, and easier to move on.
