After she says, “I’m out of breath” Durante immediately says, “I’ll take your lines”. Ever the professional and thoughtful trooper. She died that night in her sleep of a massive heart attack. It’s believed she had one on stage there. They say he was the kindest man in show business. Ethel Merman said in a late in her life interview that he’d help out ANYONE he thought was in need. Big stars to stage hands. Not loans. Gifts. A very generous and thoughtful man. Who knew. Goodnight Carmen, and Goodnight Mr. Durante, where ever you are.

It wasn't during her sleep. She was found dead in a short hall at the second floor of her house, apparently after removing her make up and lit a cigarette. Anyway... such a young, brilliant and bright star.

I was born a generation too late to have enjoyed her in person, but grateful to enjoy her now. Though she sadly left us too soon, aren't we lucky to still have her through her great films and music? I have had three heart attacks. One was where I ran out of breath and had to sit down. I feel so sorry for her because little was known about all of the symptoms of a heart attack. Most people imagine the stereotype of someone clutching their chest in agony. While that scenario can be true, women especially can have completely different symptoms than men and they don’t realize that they are in serious trouble because women and men can have milder symptoms and still be having a heart attack.

Performers perform and Carmen Miranda was an old school performer, the kind that persevered through it all. Goodness, would anyone in 1955, even a doctor, have known Carmen was having a heart attack and not just an attack of nausea? Today we know that women's heart attacks present differently than men's, and that one of the symptoms for women is nausea.
I recently saw a fan-shot clip of David Bowie having the heart attack onstage during his last concert in 2004 that ended his touring days, and watching this clip gave me the same sad feelings. At least he had his assistant Coco Schwab who saw he wasn't right and took him to the hospital and he lived another 10 years. He thought it was a pinched nerve!

You can see that she is in pain, and feeling unwell. There are plenty of clues. They carry her onto the set. She almost falls over twice, and the professionalism of the supporting entertainers, not least Jimmy Durante, cover it. She sits down or leans on things whenever she can. She even clutches her chest and says she's out of breath after a short dance. She is being supported or having her hand held for most of the shots, and doesn't sing with her full voice.
But, 'The Show Must Go On' prevails. A trouper to the very end of her short life.

So True. It's Ironic that the company that sponsored this program was a cigarette company. Smoking was "in style" back then & they did not know the repercussions that it would have. Carmen Miranda smoked, drank & had used amphetamines & barbiturates after her miscarriage. This a Sad Loss of Such a Sweat Lady.

Let us not forget that the men who ran the studios also forced amphetamines on many (all?) of their female stars (perhaps male, too), in order to maximise their profits by giving them impossible schedules. Lorna Luft's book about her mother, Judy Garland, is one book that gives some excellent info.

After the last take, Miranda and Durante gave an impromptu performance on the set for the cast and technicians. The singer took several cast members and some friends home with her for a small party. She went upstairs to bed at about 3 a.m. Miranda undressed, placed her platform shoes in a corner, lit a cigarette, placed it in an ashtray and went into her bathroom to remove her makeup. She apparently came from the bathroom with a small, round mirror in her hand; in the hall which led to her bedroom, she collapsed with a fatal heart attack. Miranda was 46 years old. Her body was found at about 10:30 a.m. lying in the hallway.

I must have watched that bit where she almost faints several dozen times but just now I caught something that is easy to miss but once you see it, you can't unsee it; Right as she's going down, you can see her briefly making a sort of panicked, desperate fluttery gesture with her left hand at Durante's hand as if saying "Omg, something terrible is happening!" but almost instantaneously recovers.
It changes the whole thing for me. If it was a controlled and graceful dip at first, it has now become a panicked and desperate clinging onto Durante and her life. Also, nobody has mentioned this but it's pretty alarming just how slurred her speech is when she says she's out of breath. It's so slurred that it sounds as if she's drunk.
Her heart attack could have started as early as 23:25 when she begins to look unsteady and sways to the side pretty significantly. After that, her smile looks strained and when she launches into that solo dance, there is no smile on her face at all which is extremely not her style. I don't think she's ever appeared on screen looking bored or tired unless she was doing lines that called for that. She is dancing here and she clearly has an expression of seriousness. I believe she began to feel faint and knew she would go down so she calls out to Durante @ 23:51 to join her, something I believe wasn't in the script but she was trying her best to cover up the way she was feeling.
Miranda and Durante launch into that hectic dance together and she is clearly using his body as support as his dips look as if there's considerable resistance by which time he gets the hint. I believe it's at this point that she is having a full-blown heart attack, precisely as she makes that desperate, fluttery/slappy left-hand gesture @ 24:05 on Durante's hand as she goes down which I still think looks more like a reflex and was possibly an involuntary reflection of how her heart was beating which, in a heart attack, is usually in a panicked quiver as the heart muscle pleads for oxygen. Her heart was likely damaged due to the lack of oxygen-rich blood causing her to go down. Maybe it was by the grace of God or her own sheer will to not let her public down and make the show go on that she literally bounces back and goes on.
@ 24:17 she is looking at Durante with her mouth gaping open in a very joyful manner which is likely a cover for being so out of breath due to her heart attack, she is gasping for air which is confirmed when she speaks and sounds alarmingly drunk. I think she was literally dying, her light was extinguishing at that precise moment and that is reflected in her slurred speech.
By 25:32, her heart attack has inflicted its damage and she's still gasping as the number ends. Her smile is still remarkably convincing even though it continues to be somewhat strained. I think it's because her eyes are smiling, which is part of the magic of Carmen Miranda; those expressive, animated, and very joyful eyes.
I cried when she does her final farewell @ 26:19 because her overall demeanor is down a notch and that would literally be her goodbye to the world as death awaited her early the next day.
    RIP Carmen Miranda.
EDIT: A crystal clear version of the moments leading up to her heart attack can be seen here: ua-cam.com/video/Su8bTYUx-eg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=35

I don't know if you've seen it, but there are some images taken from the camera that was shooting in close up. In the very moment that she fainted, her eyes rolled back and she looked terrible. If she was not having the heart attack itself, she was at least suffering from a strong arrhythmia or something else that preceded the final event. The shot was not used in the final edition, because it was not a good image to see, but some Brazilian magazines somehow got access to the frames and published it. If you want, I may try to find the image.

A heart attack in a woman often is different than it is for a man. Women generally experience different symptoms. In Carmen Miranda’s case she suddenly became out of breath. She apparently had no chest pain or other classic symptoms. Nonetheless she was in crisis and the damage being done to her heart was irreversible. I suffered a serious heart attack and was taken to hospital. The doctors thought I was not having a heart attack. I knew different. I was in pain. I was admitted around 10:00 am on a Monday. I wasn’t taken into the procedure room for a heart cath until 10:00 pm Tuesday. My left ventricle was damaged. The circumflex artery was blocked. This artery has a history of masking symptoms that mislead doctors into a wrong diagnosis which is what happened to me. Now I get out of breath doing the smallest task. I experience frequent pain in my left arm. I’ve gained weight. My kidneys are affected. Bottom line, a heart attack is very serious.

I'm watching The Girl From Rio (a documentary about her), and it's getting me a little annoyed because there trying to make it that - as an adult woman - one who they make VERY clear was VERY in control of her image, etc, was... 'taken advantage of'. They say that after the war, (29th Century) Fox didn't know what to do with her.
Well, that's life. I don't mean to sound cruel, but many actors (Garbo, Dietrich are just 2 examples) of actors who were also foreign born, and like Ms Miranda were also very in control.
It's very sad that Ms Miranda didn't stop, but that was HER decision.
Being an adult means taking responsibility for infra actions - good AND bad,, and, she knew something wasn't right, but that was HER call.
