I'd worked at a Massachusetts institution for the mentally & physically challenged for over 40 years, and very early in my time there (early 80s), l heard that Mr Durante once visited the residents there in the late-60s, & put on a little show in the auditorium for free. Such a kind & generous man!
When my husband died and I went through his pile of letters, I found one from Jimmy Durante to him, hand-written and with his home return address. My husband was not famous but in show business in the 60s and 70s and somehow he and Durante knew each other. The letter is a "how you doing - I'm going to be in Reno when you are" letter. A gem, like the man was.
Jimmy Durante never performed a "character" beneath him.... He never used filth, bad language, or any cheap shill to make people laugh..... He had above all else CLASS.... Rest in peace Jimmy.... America STILL loves you !!!
He smiled with his entire face. Even as a boy I saw him and felt a warm glow, and I had to smile too. Not many people have had that gift. What a prince.
Jimmy Durante was one of the kindest, nicest people in show business. He was the one that started The Jimmy Fund. He was also known for paying his band their full pay just to practice one day out of the week when they didn't have gigs. That money came out of Jimmy's own money. He didn't want his band to go hungry between gigs. Truly a magnificent man!!!
Hey, Randy - Durante and my grandfather were difficult to tell apart - - from their similar sense of humor, and particularly due to the prominent proboscis on each of them! My Grandpa Chris would say farewell to Grandma each morning with one of these lines: "Hey Josie, take your fat can to the butcher's! (during the time when household fat was saved and used in the war effort). "Hey Josie - See ya later in the pigpen. Wear your hat so I'll know ya!" Grandpa Chris had an errand once that involved him picking up a formal photo portrait of his mother-in-law (Grandma Josie's mom), and a new toilet seat. Grandma opened the package to find her mother's face framed in the new toilet lid. Once during a formal dinner given at their home, Grandpa went into the kitchen to slice some more roast beef. While in the kitchen, he relieved himself of some troublesome air loudly enough that not only the diners noticed, but probably some neighbors as well. Grandma was thoroughly embarrassed (and ticked), but decided to ignore him, until he popped his head through the swinging kitchen door and announced "If I tuned it up, I could play the Star Spangled Banner!" Grandma was very proud of her famous relation, Francis Scott Key, and Grandpa never missed a chance to rib her about it.
Jimmy Durante was the real deal. A genuinely good, kind person. Really heartwarming to hear him talk about his wife and little girl - the guy was just beaming.

Also (if I may add) Jimmy Durante was probably the most beloved show business figure of all time! He told the most incredibly funny jokes - with no rancor whatsoever! And he sang as well!! His songs fully rang through the Christmas classic, "Rudolph" and well-beyond to "Sleepless in Seattle," and other well-known films besides. Our Mr. Durante fully lives in 2015.
Mc Hobbit: I'm sure Mr. Durante was still quite "robust" at 72, but he and his beloved wife "Margie" adopted their little CeCe. There's a wonderful story from his biography which relates when Jimmy Durante turned 75 (in 1968) a big celebration was planned for him in Las Vegas (where he often headlined). A huge birthday cake was brought out to great cheers and suddenly little CeCe (to the surprise of all) popped right out of the cake. Tears of joy streamed down her Dad's face (who thought CeCe was home in bed). I'm sure it was something Mr. Durante never forgot.

VERY CLEAN SHOW. For the entire run of the show (1950-1967), manners without profanity were the norm. Dirty jokes were innocently expressed back then...
I hope you are still watching them. I am now heading into my third time through this show, one a night, and watching a syndicated version each night as well. It is an addiction, but better than watching shows on TV these days.
am now hooked ! seeing all the old stars of my youth . We had this in England too ! We knew one of the guests on one show , Peter Cloke , Head of Bude SLSC , Cornwall , England :-)
Jimmy durante. what a wonderful performer. I remember as a child watching & listening to him narrate "Frosty the snowman" at Christmastime & thoroughly enjoying it. I also remember him singing my father's favorite hymn "His eye is on the sparrow. what a charming & versatile performer!
I’ve never seen the panel ladies stand for a guest as he/she exits but they did for Jimmy. You could tell he was absolutely adored by the public. Seemed like a super lovable guy.
The ladies did stand for a few other guests, but it was very rare. For example, they stood for Eleanor Roosevelt and Bishop Fulton Sheen (and Dorothy kissed his ring), and for a couple of regular contestants who were very elderly.
I'm loving all these What's My Line? episodes. Have probably watched and re-watched them a few times. My favorites are probably the Fred Allen era, but I like them all. I was just wondering this moment why John asks the women whether the are Miss or Mrs, but Dorothy and Arlene have "Miss" in front of their surnames on the panel board, when they are both married. Though, of course, I do like when John refers to them as "Miss Arlene" or "Miss Kilgallen".
Arlene Francis' husband's name was Martin Gabel; her actual birth name was Arlene Francis Kazanjian. Dorothy Kilgallen's husband was Richard Kolmar; Kilgallen was her maiden name. Then, as now, it was the courtesy for actresses and other female celebrities to be referred to as "Miss" So-and-So, at least unless they used their husband's name as their professional surname (which most didn't do, and most don't do today, either).
I always fondly remember when our Carmen Miranda performed for the last time in her life on the Jimmy Durante Show in 1955. Then she went home. And soon after, she died. Bobby Darin is special to me. Because his song ''Amy'' is for me the number of all songs, which I appreciate and like. Very sad that he passed so young. R.I.P. both great entertainers. Hugs from Brazil.
I came to this when i was wat hing a totally unrelated video and someone commented on the very warm reception Mr. Durante received from both the audience and the panel. I had to watch this and am glad I did. Has there been a more beloved guest? I think not.

Men then stood to greet women and sometimes men. Women stood only to greet elderly or an older person of great respect.
@@kathyyoung1774 Like the nun dentist and Bishop Sheen. Dorothy actually curtsied!

There is a fair bit of Jimmy Durante on UA-cam. One skit with him and Carmen Miranda is unforgettable!!! I have so much fun rewatching that innocent material!!!!
Loved this
It shows just how much Jimmy was adored by everyone
It was one of only a handful of times that the women of the panel stood up !!
In those days the ladies normally stayed seated
Off the top of my head the only other time I have seen this on the shows uploaded to UA-cam was when Eleanor Roosevelt was the mystery guest
there were times this happened -- clergy, well respected elderly entertainers, FL Wright, among others.
WHOA! I'm sitting here feeling young at 72, and thought, "Wow, Jimmy Durante is OLD".
He was 6 months younger there than I am now! I guess I'll schedule my cremation for next Tuesday.
I need to rush it. He didn't die until he was 86
Jimmy D was a quality of man that has sadly disappeared from the world
Jimmy Durante brought me here. ♥
Poor Dorothy Kilgallen died on the 8th of November the same year. ☹️
Some think she was murdered because she was outspoken about a conspiracy to kill JFK.
@@chrisneilson7221 there are a few books out that detail the events surrounding her death and all the unanswered questions. I believe the author has a few lectures about it somewhere on youtube!
@@chrisneilson7221 Her death was determined to have been caused by a combination of alcohol and barbiturates. The police said there was no indication of violence or suicide.
Love these old programs, and I absolutely love the commercials.
Couldn't imagine it would be long before Jimmy Durante was exposed. Can't conceal THAT voice! :-)
Jimmy Durante owned my heart from the moment I first saw him when I was a child. As a pubescent teen I heard him say good night to Mrs. Calabash at the end of each show! As an adult I watched each of his films as he endeared himself over and over again to millions. He had a heart of gold.
Great Episode! Lots of additional information from all these WML fans, Thank you all for your love and devotion to this great show!
How about the way Jimmy Durante shakes hands with the men at the end? Is that a happy guy or what!?
Durante the Great
Look at the sheer joy of everyone.
A great entertainer God Bless Him.
LOVE Jimmy Durante and Bobby Darin
LOVE JIMMY DURANTE!
- You were not alone. What a gentleman. What an entertainer.
Jimmy Durante stays in our hearts!
❤️💕🥰👍😎
The Schnozolla and a 29 year old Bobby Darin. I just love it.
smd ftb Me, too! This old show was great! A little before my time, but I love that my mom and grandparents watched it together. ❤️
@@KDL861 before my time too. Born in 79. I used to watch all the black and white shows on TV Land and Nick at Nite. What a wonderful era.
This show is exceptional and classy. Enjoying these programs again in 2021 from WY.
Loved his Kellogg's Cornflakes commercials! Very memorable!
The last contestant, Lee Guilfoyle is a good skydiving friend and still skydives every week.
I just love Jimmy Durante!
Each time I watch the Jimmy Durante segment I find my eyes watering because he was such a beloved and mesmerizing entertainer. I'm so grateful for being on this earth when I was lucky enough to enjoy all his performances in movies and TV.
Excellent show !
Bobby Darin…so dreamy
One of my favorite youubechannels
i loved Mr. Darin....such a great singer.....one of the best. Died way to young.

Great job with opportunity to see a "clean show" from the fifties.
bmack This one was made in 1965, but I agree with the sentiment.
Clean show?
VERY CLEAN SHOW. For the entire run of the show (1950-1967), manners without profanity were the norm. Dirty jokes were innocently expressed back then...
Terence Dove Arlene does provide some innuendo along the way though. :)
And 60s
What a gem finding this whole series of WML. Such a vault of celebrities and true class. I can’t stop watching these things.
I adored Jimmy Duranti as a kid! He is still an impressive individual!!
I’ve never seen the panel
ladies stand for a guest as he/she exits but they did for Jimmy.
Jimmy Durante, a bona fide smile-maker.
Dorothy and Arlene are both using their unmarried names, hence the Miss.
The most loved entertainer of all time🎹🎹🎹🎼
The man lived for nearly another 15 years after this.
Good night Mr. and Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.
I came to this when i was wat hing a totally unrelated video and someone commented on the very warm reception Mr. Durante received from both the audience and the panel. I had to watch this and am glad I did. Has there been a more beloved guest? I think not.
