It's finally here! I wanted it since its announcement, especially given how much I love my SOMA Lyra-8 (as you could probably tell, looking at my past videos).
Solar50 is larger, lighter, thinner, has 6 times the osc, and even built-in fx!
Oh, it is also yellow, and if it wasn't cool enough with its light sensor made to look like HAL9000.
Anyway, it's here, and I definitely should make a comparison video, because almost nothing of the Solar50 resembles the Lyra-8, apart from the touch surfaces (still, a different kind of ones).
This yellow beast is more resembling, to me, to an orgy of Sequential OB-6, with its brassiness and the 12dB Polivoks filter.
This was a first encounter, much more to come: I still have to receive all the other cartridges, I need to try it in stereo with some pedals, and a comparison with the Lyra-8 is almost mandatory!

@@Dexba You're more than welcome, Dexba. I really mean it as well, now that UA-cam has gone to shit with the A.I. pushing bollocks hype stuff 24/7, it's become quite difficult finding the out-there people, the cosmicators :D What really inspires me with what you do is that you first and foremost marry the instruments and strike a relationship with them, before thinking about the 'audience'/'the hype', etc. I've watched your videos over and over again, especially the Lyra and the 'Everything' and this one... it really shows you choose the instruments wisely and play them with dedication to the instrument, a zen state of mind. I have a friend who is a genius on machines, and you could watch a thousand octatrack people and then he starts playing and it's just different, he has married the instrument and given it all his love and attention. You do the same! So keep it up, your spirit shines through your videos more than anyone else I've found in the space, a whole lot of love man! All the best, Sean

It is! Or it was. I admit the novelty faded quite rapidly, and I was left with a pretty normal-sounding synth with 50 oscillators to tune each time. But I got so much fun out of it, and if money was non object I would have kept it, even just for the look!

That is an Amazon Basic laptop stand, but almost any model will do the job, just find the one you like the best :)

Solar 50 is probably the best drone machine ever..
On one hand I agree, but I admit the look of it is a big part of my love for the instrument.
I mean: look at that, in this deep yellow. Just gorgeous.
About sound and playability though, I am not completely sure.
The sound is a bit too thin for my likings, and I know that's part of the character and also a measure for avoiding untameable havoc caused by 50 oscillators storming together, but still... not the most compelling raw sound.
As for the playability in general, there is this mixed bag of "a lot" of some things (osc, buttons, FX) and "very few" of others (modulation, mono filter, routing options), so in the end I've found the experience pretty static.
To sum up, I was getting an Oberheim-style brass sound on 35ish oscillators (the lower ones are pretty much useless), on a mono filter, with the amazingly painful hassle of tuning each of the 50 osc every time.
As you can imagine, I was better off with some other kind of instrument.
I still miss my Solar50 though.

Sounds great, I have one of these but tuning tends to suck out any creativity by the time I’m ready to play hahaha…maybe should be a bit more patient…
Ahah, I am sorry pal, but I think you got the wrong instrument then :) Jokes aside, you could switch it on and start with a scale of your choice tuned only using the middle osc, then you can add more stuff if you feel like it!
If you got some DAW or Hardward sampler, you can tune and do the sound you like, record it, then use the amples for the music you had, or you'll have later.
I mainly use it live aswell, but I also have the Tasty Chips GR-1 and feed it with everything I can, including the Solar 50.
(you can even use it in live sampling, as a kind of effect processor)

Did you have any problems with yours?
My power supply fired and the touch plate stopped working, then I got a 2nd one, and it work for like 4 days.
I am currently experiencing a strange buzzing from the headphone output, like some waveshaping/clipping going on, that's present even when the filter is closed.
I asked the company, they said "it could be normal, since the WET output is noisier than the DRY".
I hope the problem will disappear the same way as it appeared, because I can live without the FX, but I really need the filter.
Oh, and the voice bleeding is just ungodly

@@niunotiempo457 just a minor one: the white caps just keep flying away, they're not held in place by anything, so sometimes they just randomly stick to my finger when I click them, and I have to double check to make sure not to lose them.
I would have to glue them, but it seems both dangerous (I wouldn't want to spill any glue) and extremely boring, since there are more than 100 of them!
That would sound nitpicky, but I can assure that happens enough to be quite frustrating, especially considering that losing that cap would mean not be able to access the switch

That's definitely true, and it also makes sense since ambient is about "something that surrounds" and reverbs are simulations of spaces surrounding us.
With this instrument, the FX is considered part of the signal path, and while it is definitely needed to give some girth to the mediocre oscillators, I think it fits the project, since the cards the Solar42 uses are also coming from another project by ELTA!
