The manager is either completely delusional or out of his depth, and I think his Phillips comment proved that. Rice and Arnold had no out ball with Kane coming so deep. The England players on that pitch have the quality to win that game. The problem lies with tactics they're instructed to play by a frankly average manager.
I would rather go out at the group stage in a blaze of glory by trying to play attacking, aggressive football on the front foot than go out in the quarters or semis with a whimper, scoring 0.8 goals a game and sitting back with no clue what to do with or without the ball.
I honestly think if Southgate played attacking football the whole country would get behind him and the team. But us fans who are used to watching the Premier League every week can't put up with watching these utterly dull performances.
He’s explained the problem , not keeping the ball and not pressing with intensity , lacking cohesion etc - but he’s not explained why this is happening. I’m not sure he realises that it’s to do with his approach to games and his conservative philosophy. He doesn’t know why it’s happening. We do. The players are afraid to express themselves and lack confidence.

so many problems one obvious one is that sacrificing shape for best 11 names on team sheet is to brave dynamic individual talents. You will almost always sacrifice some balance and usually all of abliity to press as everyoe hails this "you have best player in england, spain, germany" narrative. Its a lot more nuanced they are skill players on the end of a balanced dominant teams so theyre stats will be inflated. The negative is those players are not the most eager to press they are the Players who can lag instead to have role players put i the hard yards an win the ball.
