This level of transparency is rare in the online world. Russ, you're my hero! Also, glad you got this to work. Have been hoarding Shimano 11 speed parts but quietly hoping that's all been wasted effort.

Transparency? Russ rushed the previous video without doing proper troubleshooting, only to make a second video "fixing" a problem that wouldn't exist if he had done the first video properly. And he apologizes for giving "bad information", but he hasn't taken the previous" bad info" video down, so it's hard to take an apology like that seriously. It seems like hack engagement farming IMO.

@@1mp0r7g4m3r Russ clearly explained what the problem was, and I'd have likely missed that, too. I mean, I'm not a mechanic, and Russ has said repeatedly he's not, either. (Though he does do a great job of putting together some interesting combinations.). So no, I don't agree with your comment that he's engagement farming. Just doesn't fit his MO.

I installed the Cues FD-U4010-L front derailleur on a friend's bike. That one came with stick on plastic 28.6mm shims thankfully, maybe because it is lower end. The cable was run as bottom pull and had no binding issues on his 94 Specialized Crossroads Cruz. The matching shifter was interesting because it is a single lever design where you push it in to shift up and then again to release and shift down. It shares an aspect of friction shifting in that the lever is directly connected to the cable. This makes it so that you can control the speed that the derailleur cage moves both during upshifts and down shifts. No trimming function though unfortunately.

If you are not bothered by a cable running on the top tube, I would suggest routing it through the bag laces, moving the cable stopper above the front mech, and using the top routing option. That way, you can get an even better angle.

😊 Also glad for the transparency - trust forms from thoughtfulness.
Taking stock of the recent emergent complexity. . .
What's crept into just the front crankset/shifter dynamics as a case. For your use case - CUES for MTB on a road-ish setup and possible complications . . angle of seat tube, length of cage - so chainring teeth, non-Boost vs Boost biased constraints (positions parallelogram outward), cable pull position dynamics and as you mentioned clamp diameter.
The last MTB 2X derailleur (lower-mid level) I dealt with was introduced by Shimano without documentation requiring fumbling around, searching the internet and guessing.
Shimano 2X for road went from traditional-design into what I call a compound action parallelogram and new misunderstandings.
Behind the scenes one can suppose Shimano is reacting to a changing market.
My guess for the compound parallelogram was it allowed for fatter tires to work with a problem they'd previously created with a longer front parallelogram lever that was likely them trying to 'lighten' the feel at the brifter (that didn't play well with a fatter tire).
Road chainlines were changing as disc brakes pushed hubs (and cranks) outward.
Ex. Now one can buy a GRX crank for a non-disc bike and find it might max out the operating range of an old front der.
Point is dynamics like these are emerging and faster.
Some, not all of it is meant to confound. We want purpose built road-gravel bikes and MTBs (ATBs). These changes afford us better bike-use (in theory).
    Sorry for the word dump.

I just used an alivio side swing front derailer to convert my larkspur to 2x9. definitely partly inspired by your tinkering videos. works great, the look of the front housing run is different for sure but worth it for the ability to use front derailers with 1x specific frames. And on the larkspur i was worried about the top tube and tyre and mudguard clearance, so the minimal height and rear bulk is great too

Note that it is shifting pretty well for not using a Shimano crank with shaved teeth at the top and bottom and the crank does not have any chain ramps or pins. I do not know if it is/ was a price point issue but the derailleur does not look like it has a screw holding the cage together so you don't have to remove the chain to install/ uninstall the derailleur.

The shim is positioned so that clamp center is not centered on the seat tube, am I correct? Is the thicker part of the shim in the rear? Did you try it with the thicker part forward? Also, a 2 part shim that centers the clamp with the seat tube might help with the cable angle.

    • @zachb.6179

Good eye! Yeah, you can see at the [4:20] mark that the thickest part of the shim is at the back. I had to check the other video to see the gap is on the thick side of the shim. Rotating it around should really help with the cable angle.

Dude, you’re so cute with all your judgement free safe zone explanations. I just wanna take you down to the bike exercise area so I can watch you ride around in circles with all those other properly trained and socialised domesticated alt-bike pooches.
    But seriously...
I had to go back to the first vid to see if a particular comment was still there. Golly, so many more comments now. Who knew a front mech could be such a life of the party!
@90041hood sure hit the nail on the head for the first vid.
“Wow! That looks like a real POS! 😂so glad you made this video so I never have to consider getting one of these.😅"
Genius. Always fun imaging if the anonymous commenter is being sincere or sarcastic, thus then wondering if the irony is intentional or not.
The mech looks like a very nice piece of kit. The polished cage and subtle name graphics. And those hex key adjustment screws. I guess they’re kinda standard nowadays? I haven’t had the pleasure yet.
Here’s the thing about that mech, and I mentioned it before, it is a PERFECT fit for your rig!
You still haven’t pointed out the Cues FD advantages in their ring step range, especially that trekking model you have with the 16t.
I like how you addressed the issue of not using a side-swing. True the look of that cable routing takes some getting used to. Especially as we’ve become so used to the clean aesthetics of 1x rigs.
But this is a place where Shimano need to be given props for settling on a solution which eliminates compatibility issues. The way side-swing can be fitted to ANY rig is ideal. And there’s the nice straight cable route.
Wear that 2x set-up with pride! Some cool cable housing options out there. Some of your mates down at the alt-bike park can colour-match with their hairdos and tattoos!
But lucky you! Shimano just happened to make the trekking model for bikes just like yours! Funny that.
Oh but boo-hoo, that shim! Perhaps they figured that people who’ll be building such bikes will have access to somebody in a workshop with a box of them collecting roach poo down the back of a shelf somewhere. And then there’s the AUD$7 (delivered) option on Aliexpress if you’re really stuck (MUQZI Store, and check out their nifty cable end caps, I see you got one of them little balls already. The bullet point thingies look trick. And they got nice identity-group-post-modern-hair coloured cable U clips.)
BUT it is good that we're all now aware that the 28.6 shim has been dropped from most of the Shimano FD options, so peeps can avoid getting stuck when they're set to fit it.
Keep crankin' the big ring, and your granny too.
