If the car was in drive it can roll back. The motor is completely free to spin no matter what you have selected. You have to make sure to push the brake down until it says (hold) then it wont roll. If you accidentally tap the accelerator or brake it will take it out of hold and the car will be free to roll again. My friend said it feels like an old stick shift to him.
Creep mode only lets the car move forward. This was probably user error. The car most likely didn’t have creep mode enabled and depressed the break once at the light to enable auto hold and then hit it again at some point before moving forward and didn’t notice the car was moving backward. Like a manual car it’s not always easy to see when your car is rolling back.
