- I've been using the Nikon Z6 since February and it has reignited my passion for photography and inspired me to photograph new things.
This is not a review video but does talk you through some of the features this camera has that I've really enjoyed using.
Not everyone will agree with what I think and that's fine - I encourage you all to get out and find a camera that suits your budget and photographic needs.

I've gone backwards. Bought an old D700 and some old manual lenses off fleabay. Loving my photography more than ever.
You're not gone backwards. You've just drifted away in circles
Lower battery life, oil on the sensor, no video and low pixel lcd. Surely an upgrade . . .
@@azzazz4549 it's an iconic camera. Used in conjunction with manual lenses, it slows me down. I think more about the composition than I did before. Upgrade does not always equal improvement.
Agree with everything you said. I also love the EVF and focus peaking... the combination makes manual focus so easy for my old eyes.
I have been shooting Nikon for decades, and I mostly use a D850 for my landscape photography hobby. I bought the Z6 a few weeks ago, primarily as a camera to shoot family portraits, particularly of my granddaughter, and as a lighter travel option. I havd been experimenting with it, and I can see it becoming my light hiking landscape camera pretty darn fast! Great colour science plus good lenses that are not out of reach expensive, are a great combo. Finally, Kim, I love your videos of Scotland. My grandmother was born Scottish, before immigrating to Canada, and all her many older sibs had deep accents “ from the old country “. Your voice takes me back to fond memories of tea & scones & stories about life in the land of lochs.
Nice presentation and summary Kim! Glad your enjoying your new gear.
Thanks for the great video Kim. I’ve been weighing up a few different cameras and your video is enjoyable, practical and informative. I’ve just subscribed.
Love my Z6, been using since last year, easy transition from D610. The Z lenses are great though I still use a couple of the f mount which is good. Love the touch autofocus on the Z. Glad you’re enjoying it
A great explanation of the useful features and benefits of the newer technology. Love that you always emphasize the joy of getting out into nature.
That's very kind Anthony. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I just got my Z6 this month. It is an absolute game charger for me. It is as diverse as I am as a photographer. I love taking street photos but also trekking out to do landscapes. This camera can really help when I'm catch a moment on the street whether it be good or low light situations. I was just using a Nikon D3500 for a while and for an entry level camera it did a lot, we'll worth the money. The Z6 not only made it more simple but exponentially unrestricted my capabilities. I also love being about to use all my F-mount Nikon lenses with the FTZ adapter while being able to upgrade to mirrorless lenses on my own time.
Congrats on the Z6. After many months of investigation and comparing the Z6 against the D780, I finally opted for the Z6. And I am equally excited about it as you are 👍🏻 My vid about it will be up in 4 weeks. I am really, really happy with this camera.
Hard to believe that it's been a year since you were revitalized by a new Nikon!! Good job Kim!!
Hi Kim! Awesome personalize sharing of photo experience with the Nikon Z 6. Thanks for sharing. You have convince me to get one.
So happy that you are experiencing the same emotion that I experienced when I bought the Z6 when it first came out. It is a very underappreciated camera, but those of us who own it are its greatest ambassadors.
My mom was born in Edinburgh and married my dad after WWII. So fortunate to have been able to visit Scotland over the years. Really wish I had my current passion for photography on my trips, I would have had some awesome reminders of the beauty that is all around Scotland. My grandmother was born in Stonehaven. I believe that is in your neck of the woods. Been to Aberdeen, but never Stonehaven. Someday,... maybe! Love your videos, keep them coming.
I love my Z6 too. And I love your videos ! Keep it up!
I too just bought the Z6, and started with the D7100. I did buy a used D4 a few years ago but it was a beast... so heavy! This Z6 has been an eye opener and a joy to use. Flippy screen is awesome, touch screen is awesome, ISO is awesome. LOL Both times I've shot with it I went HAND HELD in low light. Photos were fantastic. Never could get that quality with the 7100 or the D4. Its small, light, great ease of use, it's the entire package. Don't regret the purchase one bit.
I also love my Z6, I upgraded from D7200, the game changer for me is the EVF, it actually makes me think even more about the exposure settings I am using, never shoot in anything but manual mode.
Thank you. Well presented and explained. Fantastic!!!
Kim, you made a good point when you said that a photographer is well served by first learning how to use the camera they have. I have been doing this for over sixty years and clearly remember the process of learning how to use each new camera or technology. I wish you well and have fun.
I can’t agree more, it had the same effect on me. Nice positive video, really appreciated.
Me to....I purchased my Z7 in March. I like to walk most mornings and my camera comes to. The "kit lens" the 24-70mm f4 is a beauty and this combination is so light and has the added advantage of IBIS. My DSLR used to come out for holidays and special outings my Z7 is a constant companion and as you say it has reignited my passion for photography. Look forward to viewing future videos keep up the good work, thank you
Hi Kim, I'm thrilled that you find the Z6 a benefit to your photography. I went to the Z7 a little over a year ago and like you it reignited my passion in specific areas that I wasn't really pursuing as much because of needing to carry a heavy load of gear.
Kim
The perfect review .. as a long time Nikon shooter, I moved up to the Z7 and completely agree about the amazing new possibilities these cameras open up.
A really great inspirational video for those newcomers to photography,...again,...good work hen
Thank you Kim. This is very helpful as I have just treated myself to a Z 6. It is incredible.
So nice to see you soo happy with the Z6, i hope you will buy one later. ❤️📸
Yup, I went from DSLR to mirrorless two years ago. I love my Sony! 🤗 Congratulations with your Z6! 👍🏼
I love her voice so cheerful and clear...Had a friend from auld sod...Good attitude and to the point...In her exclamation of her personal enjoyment...She is very good in this video....
I've recently moved from a Nikon D3400 to the Z6 and would agree with everything in your video, Kim. It's also exciting looking at the Nikon lens roadmap too!
Hello Kim, interesting video with lots of enthusiasm encouraging your viewers to get out and take photographs. The new equipment may be an advantage but as you say the photograph taken is down to the photographer and the kit and skill at their disposal. Thanks for sharing and continue to stay safe 😷
Completely agree Kim! I have a Z6 and I love it!
One advantage of my z6 is that 'silent' shutter really is silent, unlike my other Nikon which still has a shutter 'click' even on silent mode. This is great when photographing pets or wildlife as the 'click' no longer spooks them.
I had to laugh when you said "My DSLR only has 51 autofocus points.." I thought to myself "51!!" mine's only got 11! Mind you, I am using a DSLR that's even older than your D7100. I've got the D90! I love it though. It's built like a tank!
😂 glad I made you chuckle. It's all about finding what camera is right for you and do glad you enjoy your D90. That is certainly one thing about older cameras - they were built to last!
@@kimgrantphotography D'ya know Kim, it's nearly 12 years old and there isn't a mark on it! It's like a brand new camera! In fact I'd go as far as to say that when I acquired it, not all that long ago to be fair, it WAS a new camera! The shutter count measured just 468! In twelve years it's hardly been used. I think that is rapidly about to change!
@@ashstubbings2603 My beloved d90! It still produces good images! I have it since 2009 too!
I scraped, saved and borrowed for my excellent Z6, but still have my fab D200. It is built like a small, professional, all sealed, Mg tank and is as good as ever. It is apparently only worth the price of a pizza delivery so if someone is sobbing at the price of a new Z6 stop and go down to a reputable s/h dealer ;) spend the larger money on one or two pro grade lenses. I learned the hard way and eventually chucked a couple of 'cheap' Nikon lenses in the bin. The very best is worth the wait as with most things in life.
D90 still rocks, nothing wrong with it's image quality!
Hello Kim, "bumped into" you and this video thanks to the almighty algorithm. I'm a previous D7100 owner and planning to get a Z6 in a few days, so this vid is very relatable to me, thanks!
very good video. i also have a Z6 which i am enjoying using and still working out all the features
Hi Kim, nice video and liked the way you explained some useful features. I have been using D7000 for several years and it's an excellent camera but it is ageing now. I've ordered the Z6 and can't wait to get my hands on it and try the useful features like tilt screen, high ISO performance, AF, etc. And get my photography mojo back!!
Cheers!
Hello 😊 what's your feedback now after you get the z camera.
I have now D7000 so i want upgrade too 😅 but at the phase of hesitst as you know allot of choice now and brands sony or nikon.
Hope to advice me
Great video Kim, so down to earth. Upgrading to the Z6 from the D5200 and anxious to get started.
After using a Nikon D50 off on on since 2006, I got a Z6 late last year. I had a similar experience of a renewed enthusiasm for photography. I was/am blown away by the low-light capabilities and ease of use, not to mention the sharpness of the Z lenses. At the same time, I agree that you don't need a certain type of camera to take good pictures. While I feel I am taking better pictures now, that has more to do with how often I am photographing (practice!) and the excitement I now have to learn all the capabilities of my camera.
Well. Done Kim
Very Nice Video 📷 📷 📷
Awesome video Thanks ❤️🙌🏻
i love my z6. i recently got 50mm1.8s lens and my god its a beauty... it is by far the best lens i own till date
That's great to hear! Glad your enjoyed the Z6 too. I've here's the 50mm is a great lens
the 50mm 1.8 is damn awesome, versatile enough and crazy sharp!
I got the 85mm 1.8s about a week ago, it is amazing, next on the list is the 50mm!
Hi Kim. I moved over to mirrorless cameras back in 2018 I use the Sony A7rii but you hit the nail on the head it's about understanding your gear I've been doing photography since 1978 and used many cameras in that time. Each camera worked great for me at the time. Today's camera's are getting so easy to use. Back when I used my Zenith E was a different story. Understanding film speed and setting the camera to match the film speed plus most old cameras never used image stabilizer. So you matched you shutter speed to the focal length of the lens. Like you say it's all about enjoying using the gear you have. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Scotland is a beautiful place. Been a few times.
I have just ordered a Z6 just couldn't resist it any longer 😂. Arriving this Saturday 20th.
UPDATE: Saturday 20th June and the Z6 has arrived...."Let the party commence" 🍾
enjoy it, once get the habit of it, this thing is awesome af :) love it paired with the brilliant 50mm f1.8 !
how are you liking it so far?
Martin Bootneck debating between z6 or z5 any advice?
@@letsfindout6587 If your into stills and video then Z6, if you only do video then definitely Z6, but if you are more into still photography then I would go for the Z5. Hope this helps
Thanks for this Kim. Nice to hear about why certain features help you rather than highlighting features like a list. I will say though that you have an advantage over many people, in that you already know how to do many of the things without the new technology and I think that gives you an appreciation of why the new tech is so helpful, whereas many new photographers will take all of these things for granted as they know no different.
Although a relatively a new photographer, I'm old enough to appreciate things and having just taken delivery of an EOS R5, certainly appreciate the updates in AF etc compared to my old 7D MKII and even my EOS R.
I'm new to your channel so keep up the videos. Cheers
Amazing , love your videos
Very informative video, thanks 😊
Your video was great!
Thanks!
I found out about the Z6 through a photographer i met at night when photographing neowise and the milky way with my old Eos 70D. since then i just fell in love with the Z6 and i will buy it in just a few days and I couldn´t be happier. It just fits my style of photograhpy perfectly and if I hadn´t met that photographer that night, I probably would have never considered getting a Z6 because I was so focused on getting a Canon full frame camera like the EOS R6
Hi Kim, I just found your channel. I got my Z6 last week, June 14, 2020 and I am really impressed with all this camera can do. I always used Sony Cybershot cameras, and less than a year ago purchased the RX10IV. It is a great camera for the size but I was wanting more, more quality, and so I decided on the Z6. You were talking about the tilt screen, coming from the Sony, that was nothing new, but you mentioned about those who might have physical limitations. I am one of those. My back went bad a few years ago and I have nerve damage down my legs and feet, I cannot walk very well, so I have to use a mobility scooter to get around, which, when going out to do photography is a challenge in itself. But, having that tilt screen has made taking photos so much easier for someone like me, also I have a bad neck and really cannot look in the EVF all the time, I shot totally from the rear screen. I am so excited to get out and take photos on the Z6.
Nice to see your enthusiasm as always. I'v always been an Olympus user, has all the singing and dancing features like most mirrorless cameras, The size is small and handy to put in pocket if need be. Thanks for sharing. By the way you're right, need to get out and use the camera and be master/mistress to make really good quality photos.
I also have a d7100 and was pondering a d780 or z6 II. This video helps show the practical benefits of using the “live view” screen. Thank you!
Another very well presented vlog Kim
That's very kind Ian - thank you 😊
Great features/benefits presentation!
This is Brilliant Kim the Z6 had exactly the same effect on me , i absolutely love it for all those reasons you said and more .. Have you tried the focus peaking yet on your Macro shots ? it's impressive
I enjoyed your video. I also transitioned from a D7100 to the Z6 this year. I haven't got to use it much yet, as COVID-19 scrapped the trips I had scheduled this year. However, I've enjoyed the limited use thus far and the new glass is great!
Kim, your move to the Z6 reminds me of mine. I've been a photographer for over 50 years using mostly my Nikon F. I finally added digital in 2006 and have progressed through a number of DSLR's. However, when I started using the Z6, it really made me want to go out more often. I was amazed by the colors the full frame sensor was capturing that I was missing with my APS-C bodies. The other improvement I appreciated was the 5 axis shake control. I do a lot of hand held shots and didn't realize how much blur I was getting. Between much better high ISO noise and the 5 axis, I'm getting shots I could never do before.
Thanks for the really good content.
I'm in the same situation. Having nikon d7000 and want to upgrade .
Fantastic 👍
I really liked your video and on-camera personality. I agree fully that the Z6 is a camera that re-ignites passions for shooting. I derive 1/3rd of my income from portraiture. event and studio product photography and have D850, D800, D7000 and D90 and dozens of top lenses, lighting equipment and modifiers. Only after getting the Z6 did the passion return however like it was long ago for me in the film days. I have shot almost every camera made in the last 15 years and many of those made in the 40 years before that. The first time I felt the Z6 in my hand in a store, it has been by my side ever since. It goes everywhere with me, in a small sling bag with an additional lens and flash. Even commercial photography is done on the Z6 unless the art director insists on large files from the EXCELLENT D850. The D850 is probably the best all round camera ever made but it is not the sort of camera that becomes your do everything everywhere, any time camera. I have taken up landscape again, street, architecture and casual shooting again like when I first got a camera many decades ago. The first time I felt the Z6 in hand was 20 months ago and it has been with me daily ever since. There were too many weaknesses with small mirrorless before, my friends with Sony a7II and III never can say they feel as one with it because it just is not nice to hold and use and does not have weather sealing so is a fair-weather camera exclusively. The Z6 has the famous Nikon handling and ergonomic, plus the color science that is so loved. I have stopped buying F mount lenses, the S lenses for the Z series are just better, the sharpest lenses corner to corner I have ever used and modestly priced.
My ancestry is Scottish and I have visited many times. The last time was a trip to explore after scattering my parent's ashes on the waters of the Lake of Menteith, our family ancestral home. Then started a 3-week exploration of the north and central regions. I loved it and really thought about moving there but 20 years ago moved from California USA to St Petersburg Russia and would miss it too much so just visit.
I must say that your mild accent is much easier to understand than many of those people I met in rural areas. You have a musical sound in your speech that is a pleasure to listen to. I have visited 7 times. Although I really enjoy Edinburgh my favorites were the small rural villages in the central and north and was welcomed as a long-absent relative wherever I went.
Enjoy the Z6 and be sure to try some of the excellent prime lenses, like the 20mm, 50 and my take everywhere, 85 1.8. I carry the 24-70 f4 and 85mm everywhere but bring more if I have a specific goal. The 24-70 2.8 is the best mid zoom on the planet. No other zoom of any make compares.
One feature you probably forgot to mention since you like manual focus is the excellent and joy-to-use Focus Peaking that makes using old classic manual lenses a joy to use. It is very accurate and fast to nail the focal plane that you desire. Almost all fine art photography is manual focus and this make MF a snap to use.
The Nikon Z6 is my first full frame camera and I love it. I was trying to decide between the Sony and Nikon about 6 months ago when I stumbled upon The Monochrome Memoirs channel and that did it. I have the kit lens and the 50mm 1.8. Wow! The 50mm takes stunning sharp pictures in just about any light!
Oh i am still at these phase until now think whice is go with sony or stay at nikon cameras i have now D7000 and want great upgrades too 😊 whats your advice
Awesome video Kim I'm a Sony guy a7rii and a Fujifilm all mirrorless just loved your images …
Thanks alot kim for these nice video. Really love it. The good part of it that i have now the D7000 😅 and trying to upgrade to get nice one just hesitate to stay at nikon or go with another brand.
My previous camera (Olympus E-510) had 3 focus points. Really enjoyed learning photography on it but outgrew it and purchased my Z6 10 months ago. I fully understand and share your enthusiasm, it's a fantastic camera with lots of features I've grown into. Patiently waiting for the Z series 70-200mm f2.8 lens to hit the market.
Coincidentally, Henry Turner's latest vlog is all about his enthusiasm for his Nikon D7200. It's good to see photographers so enthusiastic about their kit. The landscape photography community on UA-cam is quite something. Thank you for the content.
That's great to hear Richard! Glad you're enjoying the Z6 too. I'm excited for them to release more zoom lenses too. Could do with a decent zoom to go along with my 24-70mm lens. Yes - Henry sure does love his camera and it's great to see. I still love my D7100 but more in love with the Z6. Would be sad to part with it now. Enjoy the rest of your own Z6 journey 😊
Thanks, Kim. Great video, lots of useful information. I am currently looking at upgrading from a D5600 and the Z6 is priced at almost the same price as the new Z5.
Great review! It sold me on the Z6. I pick it up in two days. :-)
Thanks this is exactly the video I was looking for! Have a D7000 and thinking about making the upgrade to Z6II😁
I was an early adopter of the Z6. Bought a second one a few months later. I didn't bother upgrading to the Z6II, but now own 5 of the superb Z-mount lenses, which is the other, arguably more important, part of the Z Series revolution.
Great video Kim. Looks like a great camera. Look forward to seeing more of your photos. Is it easy to use for beginners and can you shoot video on there? Best wishes. Jonathan
Ok so now I feel inspired - sorta. My first “real” camera was a D7100, but what you did with that 7100 surpasses what I could dream of doing with my 2nd camera, the Z6. I’ve been following your channel for several years now. You are talented and should know that there are many who follow your channel who are now convinced that gear is not the problem. Skill and creativity are.
You too convince me now to get z6 😍 cause i have now D7000 😅 and dream to upgrade to new one bust stilll search where to go with nikon sony or what
One of the best reviews on the Z6, wish l could afford one!
Hello Kim. I also use a Nikon Z6 and its a wonder. From using the D800 and upgrading to a mirolless I love the EVF. Also I think Its great with the FTZ and old film MF lens.
Thanks Kim ❤️🏴
Great video Kim! I´ve considering an upgrade for a long time now (I shoot currently a Fujifilm X-T1, and although it still works perfectly is starting to show its age) and the Z6 is right up there in the top of my list of contenders. Also I´m so glad that I found your channel, I haven´t seen that many Scottish photographers with a YT channel. Greetings from Edinburgh! :)
Z6 straight outofcamera outputs great colour pic quality. Very nice evf and led display. It's a very long awaited camera for F-mount fullframe lens fans.
This spring I considered the D780 and Z6ii. My wife did the same. I chose the D780 and she the Z6ii. Don't get me wrong, I love my camera, but I think she made the right decision.
Had my Z6 for nearly two years and love it. Funnily I have fallen into my old habit of using the button to adjust ISO, etc, so you have reminded me to make use the back screen. Thanks!
Great video Kim. Thanks. I'm considering getting either a Z6 or a fugi xt4. Are you primarily a landscape photographer?
Great video, totally agree. I replaced my trusty D300 with a Z6 and it has rekindled my love of photography. The features, capabilities and customisation options of this camera ( and others like it) give you the freedom to concentrate much more on your subjects.
This is great to hear Bob! Really glad you too are enjoying this great piece of kit 👍
Bob Wyllie I still have my D300, in pristine condition but would like to upgrade to the mirrorless system; the only thing holding me back is the fact that my existing 70-200 f2.8 vr I g lens apparently dosn't perform very well on the FX bodies and would be a lot of money to upgrade so will have to make a decision on which route I take in the next year but will definitely be keeping the D300....
@@blakecraig I have the VR also, it does not perform as well as the VR2 or FL but still works very well in the center. By switching to the Dx image circle it will perform better then the D300 in DX mode. I also have the much more expensive FL version that is excellent but more expensive than a 70-200 2.8 S which is a little lower cost and surely better optically. All the S lenses outperform the more expensive F mount versions. Even the kit 24-70 f/4 for$600(when buying it with the camera) is superior optically than the G or E version. I have both of those and use the F/4 even for paid studio work because it is just better corner to corner. I also have the 24-70 2.8 S and it is the best is mid zoom on the market, and shames some pretty highly rated primes.
I use my 70-200 VR on a Z6 often for portraits where the subject is in the center so it works very well. It will perform better on a Z camera than on a Dx D300 or any other DSLR. I have used it on my D850 and D800 and some of my favorite portraits were done with that combination. Rent a Z6 or Z7 with FTZ adaptor and see, I think you will like the image quality with that lens. Although I have a lot of really good F glass, I use the 85 1.8 S native Z lens for most of my portrait work now.
i love it as well. haven’t try it with legacy lens yet with the adaptor
Thanks for sharing... I have D7100 & upgraded to D500 but still love my D7100 as I am a hobbyist & still learning... Maybe I should have watched your video months ago...cheers..
Thanks Kim. I found this video very useful. I have been considering going mirrorless. However, I shoot with a D850 and it has most of the features you mentioned with the Z6. The days of the DSLR are numbered, but there aren’t quite enough reasons for me to make the leap at the moment. I do know what you mean though when I got the D850 I got a renewed passion. Do you have any any experience using the F to Z adapter? Cheers 😄
Hi Kim Great video as per usual. I’ve taken the plunge and bought the Z6 (much to my wife’s chagrin especially when she found out how much it cost me 🤫) but I’d like to ask you a question on your tripod set up, what is the gadget you use to turn the camera from landscape to portrait on your tripod? @7.16 min in the video. Keep up the good work with the videos
Hi Kim I’ve just come across your wonderful videos on UA-cam as I love landscape photography. I love the way you keep everything simple for the leisure photographer like myself! I’ve been thinking of getting myself a mirrorless camera and the Z6 was one option, so was intrigued to hear what you had to say! At the moment I have a D7000 which I bought about 6 years ago and have a number of lenses for and was wondering if you use a lens mount adaptor and if you do if you’ve noticed if there was any problems using the old lenses on the z6 ie image quality? Keep up the great videos
Unless your lenses are full frame, you might not have wide enough field of view for landscape but for general and portraiture or anything with a narrower field of view a Dx lens on a Fx camera gives up some resolution while appearing to have more reach. That is a benefit for wildlife or sports but now for landscape. I would suggest, if you get the Z6, to add at least one native lens like the excellent 24-70 f/4 to get the real benefit of having a full-frame sensor. Adapted F mount lenses work great on the Z6 but comparing native Z lenses to F mount lenses, in every way, the Z lenses are optically superior. Having the optional FTZ adaptor, however, opens up a vast arrange of legacy F mount lenses that work well. In fact, old manual focus F lenses designed for film cameras work best on Z cameras because the manual focus is so good and accurate with the Z cameras and a pain to use on DSLRs. If you line Prine lenses like the general-purpose 50mm or the short telephoto 85 1.8 lens, for a modest price they are stunning. You can see the difference. I have dozens of top F mount lenses and none are as good as the Z native lenses for optical quality. If you can only justify buying one Z mount lens due to cost, getting a Z6 with a 24-70 f/4 lens as a kit lowers the cost of the lens $300 and you will be amazed how good that lens is.
@@stanspb763 Excellent advice, the Z6+24-70 f4+FTZ (if you need it) is a kit actually worth buying.
Stan SPb thank you for the in-depth explanation I really appreciate it. Thought I might be able to sell it to my wife if I could say I can use all my old lenses!!! Now I’ll have to find another way to justify the expense of forking out for a new camera, I might have to use COVID and the fact that they won’t be letting you take such big bags on plane’s so need to downsize my kit🤣
I really appreciate how you turned the table on gear discussion....focusing on how it improves your own experience rather than the usual gear talk of pure capabilities! I guess as a disclaimer, I am a user experience designer, so of course that would be my focus :)
You mentioned that you hadn't really been looking for a new camera, since your D7100 is still going strong. Do you have any thoughts on when it's worth thinking about upgrading a body?
Why I'm asking....I have a slightly older, entry-level dslr, and while I still love taking it out for photos I'm starting to look at some of the features of newer, "enthusiast" models and thinking they could lead me to the kinds of experiences you talked about here. But then I wonder if I really need the upgrade. And then I wonder if I go for the full enthusiast body, or the more intermediate/beginner that would still be a step up....although obviously with fewer features than the enthusiast. Throw the previous enthusiast model into the mix, since it would save money over the new one, and it becomes very complicated. And then I just start to think maybe I should avoid the trouble altogether and just stick with my current body!
Liked the z6 so much, I went and got the z6 ii
Have you used the FTZ Adapter so you could still use your old dslr lenses? If so was it good or would you just sell them and get Z lenses?
Great video Kim what macro lens do you use for. the Z6?
It will be my future camera 👌
Hi Kim thank you so much for this video. I'm inspired! Just recently sold my old Nikon D40x and Fuji X100F... the only camera I have left is my Pentax K1000 from the 1980s! So it's time for a change... what would you recommend as a good do-it-all lens for the Z6? I take plenty of nature photos, family snaps and everything in between... for value and flexibility would you say the 24-70 F4 is a good lens? I'm really drawn to the 14-30mm as would love that wide angle for nature scenes here in the Scottish Borders.... but I don't know if I can afford both! Thank you so much
Hi Kim, I've a little question about z6 live view and viewfinder... Does z6 allow to see instant histogram? I got a Sony and I find that info very very useful
Many thanks
Hi Kim great review, can I ask why the Z6 and not the Z7. Was it down to cost , features or VFM, I have the D850 and considering going mirrorless. kind regards
Right angle viewfinder helps for the low angle shots too if you don't have a tilt screen.
The Nikon version is expensive but there's generic versions as low as $50 brand new and cheaper used around $20. Nikon sells there's for $200 same as Canon. Adorama sells used official ones for $80.
Loved the video, very professional and high quality, great job.
I have D7000 and have been thinking of z6 I am finding the weight being the main reason of the switch. I to have trouble getting and up due to leg opp.So thank you for your feed back. What lens were you using?
Use the Z6 for my travel photography and videos. Love it for photography not so much for video. The stabilization and mic inputs leave a lot to be desired and no flip out screen hurts for vlogging. Fantastic video. Love your content.
I've yet to use it for video (though unsure I will as I enjoy having set cameras for video and photography. I've heard the specs for video are good though. Interesting to here your views and agree - no flip down screen would make vlogging a challenge. I used the Z50 very briefly back in March for vlogging (that screen flips right down but makes using it on a tripod tricky unless you have a special adapter).
Kim Grant curios what camera do you film with? I tend to go back to my Canon T7i or my GoPro.
@@adventuresofjandk thats interesting what you say about the IBIS on the Z6. It gets so confusing making a decision about it because a lot of people like the IBIS on the Z cameras.
Mark Shirley Hi Mark. I have no idea why. I own an old T7i with no in body stabilization and I don’t see one bit of difference. As a camera for photography I love it but if I could do it again I would have probably went with a Sony or GH5 for video.
@@adventuresofjandk strange - Ive seen plenty of before and after IBIS examples for the Z6 in video and it seems to work well certainly better than the Sony IBIS your the first person I've seen make thst comment. I wonder if you have a faulty camera.
What wide angle lens did you use with the d7100?
I have the d3300 and looking for a wide angle lens,I've selected the samyang 14mm f/2.8.
Could you suggest any other lens?
Love the video! I own a Nikon D850, but the EVF seems to be perfect. The only minor things are tilt screen not in portrait view and size megapixels for cropping. Maybe the Z8/Z9 is the solution.
Rent a Z6, they are on sale now. I almost never use my D850 after getting my Z6. For higher res, try the Z7. Once you get an S lens or two it is hard to go back.
I'm still a beginner that recently purchased a Z6 and a few Z lenses. Don't know why this video popped up for me but glad it did! Curious what you think of the latest firmware update, and if it has changed some of your methodology?
I would like to own the Z6 but I already have the D850 and it is a formidable camera. Also has the touch screen and many other state of the art features. Don't write off DSLRs just yet! Thanks
Thank you Kim for another great video. I always enjoy your enthusiasm. I’m about 6 months behind you. I have shooting with a Nikon 7200 and I’m not really satisfied with the low light sensitivity. Thinking of up grading to either the Z 6 or z7 or even the 850 if budget will allow. I have 5 Nikon mount lenses that are made by Sigma or Tamron. Do you have any experience with compatibility on non Nikon lenses with the option adapter? Also I read that the adapter may cause some problems with the tripod bracket. Any info on that?
Most of the Sigma lenses made in the last 3 years work without firmware update but Tamron lenses have been slow up update the firmware of the old lenses. The newer ones have already been changed and every few months they extend the list of lenses that can be updated. If you are shooting G2 lenses, and are less than 2 years old, they are fully compatible. If they are older they can be updated automatically if you have the optional TAP- In adaptor. Just mount the lens on the TAP In console and connect its USB port to your computer and it downloads the firmware and installs it itself. I have a 15-30 2.8G@ I bought just before the Z6 was available and it did not work on the Z6 but buying a Tap In console took care of that quickly. It acts like a native lens. Go to the Tamron web site and there is a list of the status of every lens going back a long time. A lot of lenses had new firmware released.
That said, get at least one S lens and it will spoil you I have 2 dozen top F lens that always worked well on the D850, 800 and 7x00 but there is a clear difference, particularly in the corners and zero CA/color fringing wide open. The 50mm and 85 1.8 S are simply stunning on the Z cameras, better than any F mount. The kit 24-70 f/4 is optically better than either G or E 2.8 F mount, for a fraction of the cost. The S 2.8 version is probably the best mid zoom ever made, and beats the best F primes! There are some lenses than can compete in some ways for example among my 50-58mm primes I have 4 Nikkors and 2 Sigma including the 50 1.4 ART In the very center, the 50 1.8 S is hard to see a difference but moving away from the center and the S native lens stays just as sharp to the corners while the Sigma becomes weak. No more needing to stop down to get corner to corner sharpness, plus zero CA/color fringing on the S glass is pretty amazing. The same result is with the 85 1.8 S compared to the 85 ART or Nikkor 85 1.4G, the cheaper lighter S lens is just better.
I'm hanging on for the Z6s, as a replacement for my D500.... Wouldn't using the touch screen
impact on battery life ?
Bought the Z6 last week with the 50 mm f1.8. Upgraded from a D7000. Normally shoot wildlife but wanted to expand more into landscape and even try astro. Lots of learning still to do but loving it. Even the wildlife photography got more fun going from 5.5 fps to 12!
This is great to hear Ian! Really glad that you're enjoying the Z6 too. I've yet to try it out on wildlife but hoping that will change in the coming weeks as restrictions are lifting on travel :)
However, I love Nikon, I do have the Nikon D7500 and use this for my real estate photography with the Nikon 10-20mm for shooting real estate is awesome. I tried using the Sony a7iii with the 12-24mm G lens, but comes out too dark at the same settings, but when using my Sony a6000 using the Rokinon 12mm works great! I think because the Sony a7iii is a 1inch mirrorless cameraI have to play with the shutter speed and aperture. On the a6000 and D7500 I use specific settings iso 100, aperture f7.1 shutter at 100 with a one -two light setup, 3-4 if the home is larger. for the exterior I use f10 shutter 400 and iso 100. those are my sweet spots for interior and exterior. Why do you think it's dark on the a7iii using the 12-24mm g lens? You and your videos are so great! I am a huge fan love your work.
Please which is better for photograhy nikon d5600 or canon m50 or canon sl3?
