  • Do you want to know how to tell if you have carpal tunnel? I'm going to answer this question for you and show you how to test for carpal tunnel syndrome at home! I explain common carpal tunnel signs and symptoms and will help you nail the diagnosis. These are FIVE really revealing signs of carpal tunnel syndrome that you can check before seeing a doctor. Carpal tunnel syndrome, also called CTS is one of the most common peripheral nerve pains and causes both pain and paresthesia (tingling or burning) in the wrist and hand. It's typically caused by repetitive overuse injuries and compression or inflammation that develops in the carpal tunnel region of the anterior wrist.
Wondering how to tell if you have carpal tunnel syndrome? Here are 5 tests to answer your question!
Here are the 5 signs of carpal tunnel that I use to diagnose this condition in my office:
    1) You have a positive "Flick Sign." This means that you shake your hands vigorously for a few seconds it reproduces your symptoms.
    2) You have a wrist thickness to width ratio of greater than 0.67. To figure this out you simply measure your wrist thickness from front to back and width from side to side. Put them in a ratio and use a calculator to divide!
    3) You're 45 years of age or older. This one is pretty self-explanatory, but the condition is more common in those in this age range.
    4) You have decreased sensation on the palmar side of your thumb when compared to your thenar region, the meaty muscular portion of your thumb. You may have symptoms in both areas with CTS, but if it's more decreased in your thumb then you have this sign!
    5) You score a 1.9 or higher on the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire. This questionnaire is free, and I'll post it below. You simply take the mean (average) of the numbers you circle when answering it.

My name is Diego, I have sharp pain if I rest my lower elbow un a table or hard surface. I discarded Carpal Sindrome. I went to a orthopedic and they concluded my elbow is fine yet its been months with sharp pain If i hit it, even lightly.

Sorry to hear that. I'm a proponent of getting second opinions in these situations, personally.

Hi there:) Thank you for the video. Doctors here can't figure out what is wrong with my hand, if I write, my hand gets very sore and weak including the knuckle area and when I use a game controller my thumb gets weak. I thought I might have carpal tunnel symptoms but my doctor doesn't think so. My doctor also said it is highly unlikely it's writer's cramp either. When I wear a hand and wrist support, my thumb tingles and I get pins and needles. Maybe you have an idea what I have? Thank you.

There are many diagnoses to consider with those symptoms, that's also not really enough information for someone to give you specific advice. I always advise rehabbing in an exhaustive manner as many complaints will improve with chiropractic care and/or rehabilitation.

No problem, I'm really sorry to hear that you're struggling so much. Sports and rehab chiropractors can be really helpful for this condition if you're looking for some help. I know CTS can be difficult, but sometimes finding the right provider to treat it and work you through a rehab plan can be the way out. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery and thanks for checking out our channel!

I’m only 19 and I have many signs of Carpal Tunnel but no one my age has had it that I know of… is it normal to get young?

I wouldn't suspect that young people are immune to it. There are other conditions that can mimic it, so I always recommend getting examined by someone to get a correct diagnosis. There are many factors that can predispose people to carpal tunnel syndrome. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery!

I'm 29 years old now but when I was 19 I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel and rheumatoid arthritis both run in my family and at the time doctors refused to see me even though I had paperwork proof showing that I had both of these because of my age they told me I was too young to have that. I honestly didn't understand so I had to go out of the city limit to find a professional Doctor Who was willing to see me with all my documents proving that I've been tested and that I have both finally I was able to find a doctor he even retested me and both were still there however my carpal tunnel that much over the years. Im supposed to be getting surgery done soon on both my hands however I'm a little bit nervous because the percentage of relieving most of the pressure in both hands it's not a hundred percent that I will get most of my feeling back especially since I waited so long to get it treated with the proper medical attention I guess I just didn't want to believe I had it so I ignored the signs until the pain became unbearable and then the swelling became more frequent in my hand to the point to where I lost sensation in my entire left hand I can hardly use it anymore. don't wait until the severe signs start to show to get medical attention make sure to take all precautions the sooner the better.

Both of these things on my left arm. I havent experienced any problems on my hand before i doid study more hours than i used to i know i stressed my hand this is for sure.
I am losing my mind this is where i was giving all my years and now i am or was at the final steps to be recognised from the state as a musician and guitarist.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're struggling with all those symptoms. There are a lot of conditions besides carpal tunnel that can affect the palmar side of the hand including tenosynovitis (which can produce firm nodules in the flexor tendons of the hand) and radial nerve entrapment (which would affect the index finger) among others. It sounds like you're on the right track by seeing some doctors about it. A good rehab-based chiropractor, a hand/wrist orthopedic specialist, a PT who focuses on the upper limbs, PM&R doctor, and/or Neuro may be helpful. It sounds like it's really affecting your life so I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

@@user-vi4hw5qs3y Many injuries are due to overuse, which can be frustrating. On the positive side though, you can often recover with some sort term lifestyle changes, the right exercises, and sometimes medication/supplements as needed. The first step is finding a good provider and getting a quality exam to nail down what's going on and how to fix it. I really hope you're able to find that provider to help you. Best wishes, sir.
