WOW!! You guys are the best!! Seriously, I am overwhelmed with the love shown over the course of the past two weeks. This channel was sitting dead for three years and now it's just exploded in the past 2.5 weeks once I decided to get it going again. I couldn't do it without you. I try to respond to comments in every video, but I can't get to them all. And for that, I apologize. I will try to do weekly live Q&As to give you guys some time to aske me further questions. I appreciate you all!
just re-discovered your channel pete, i used to love your videos but i think you slowed down or stopped posting much lifting stuff at a certain point so i forgot about you, but im SO glad you are back and making some AMAZING quality content again, keep it coming brother, i can't wait to watch some of your pod casts soon.
Many people says that YT fitness is dying because everything was said hundred times. But then Pete comes with his amazing knowledge plus you are so honest that it is refreshing. Keep it going man.
@@houstin7866 me too, I didn't mean to sidetrack lefon's programming, I'd love to hear how Pete approaches programming ie variations of the lifts across say 3 bench sessions a week like i think haack does or same form etc, alongside how he programmes accessories Shit like that
I will never forget seeing Pete’s deadlifting videos many years ago for the first time. They shocked me. How could a guy lift that much weight that fast! Bravo!.
Learned more in the first two minutes of this video on deadlifts than i have in years watching other videos. Thanks again for the info. I am the worlds worst deadlifter and working on them again. Thanks for the tips and great info. Keep it up Pete.
Been watching you since you were 17-18 DLing in your basement. Always an inspiration man. Would always watch your massive pulls as pre-deadlift hype. Great to see you putting out informative and helpful content to the community that’s not loaded with fluff and BS. 💪
I really like this as someone who struggles with the deadlift position but doesn't necessarily lack back or leg strength I'm hoping this can help me improve my deadlift numbers!
theres one thing in perticular that ive NEVER heard in a dead tutorial before, 6:15 push the bar away from you, ive never thought about this but this insures your elbows are locked but MORE IMPORTANTLY that your chest is starting as high up as possible, simulating a block pull even when youre pulling from the floor.
When you're shoulder is directly over/infront of the bar with locked elbows, it dictates where your hips should be. As long as you remember that, you have 1 less step to worry about.
But why do powerlifters say to bring the hips closer to the bar which puts their shoulders directly above the bar? I did it exactly like you described all the months before which worked fine. Then I listened to the youtubers, brought my hips closer to the bar which put my shoulders above the bar and my torso more upright = sharp tweak in my lower back and immediately dropped on my knees. I don’t know anymore either I am doing it wrong or their advice is not good
05:22 Glad to see that even the Pete Rubish said that he is slightly away from the bar because he is taller. "The bar is actually a bit more forward than the middle of the foot because I'm a bit taller." Something I've been telling all tall lifters for years. I have a video that's probably from 2016 or 2015 explaining the same thing.
I think there's a big difference between people trying to teach the deadlift to the general public as an exercise and a PL explaining it in a way that will allow for the best force transfer and most weight lifted. Great video.
Would like to see your opinion on Eddie Hall’s deadlift tutorial video. As a long legged lifter, I always tried a narrower stance but felt it hard to get my hips through at lockout and put too much pressure on my hamstrings and low back. Some of his advice honestly helped me out with a slightly wider stance, chin against the chest and treating it like a leg press were clutch. Regardless of his status on the lift, would actually like to see another high caliber specialist break his tutorial down.
In my opinion there is no one size fits all deadlift form. Hip, back, and shoulder width can vary immensely, as well as limb lengths. I think it's all about finding a starting position that allows you to get as freakishly tight and compact as possible. Just like everyone can and should be able to perform a squat, not everybody is going to look the same whjle doing it. I've also bulked to 298lbs, one thing I've noticed is the heavier I get, my stance gets wider and I point my toes out a bit more. Go check out my deadlift progression video and then watch one of my more recent heavy pulls, my technique has changed and improved a lot over the years.
@@brute633 I've never seen a heavyweight lifter deadlift with the stance Pete uses here. Much like how Pete speaks on narrow grip width impeding the knees, narrow stance width could impede the hips and trunk, especially on thick guys.

BRO! I used this today - deadlifted at the end of fullbody heavy workout - and my maximum FLEW UP like i had no problems lifting that weight! Turns out before i exhausted my legs with long setup, which made liftoff the most problematic part, and put arms too close, and now i like freed myself to grow and explore my potential to the fullest!

Yes, perfect. It is that simple. Chris Duffin makes sense of it really well too describing it as wedging yourself between the bar creating that tension.
@@PeteRubish I'd love to get some advice from you on squats..my adductors have bothered me tremendously since I started lifting..I have tried high bar,low bar,box squats just anything I can think of to keep squatting..They don't get sore they get aggravated to the point it interferes with work and my other training session..I've even tried to strengthen them with isolation work like the Copenhagen plank and isometric exercises..do you have any suggestions?
Great tutorial…can’t wait for deadlifts this week, stance looks crazy narrow but results speak for themselves so looking forward to trying stance change and grip width. Keep ‘em coming sir.
Impeccable form and awesome tutorial. Your length limb leverages are on point... I saw your other videos and was dumbstruck. I thought only 315+ pound bloatlords could handle your 1RM. Physique is most impressive part of your pulls. Would love to know what you eat in a day.
Andy bolton teaches to have your shins touch the bar when starting so I think it just depends on your style. You have forward knee bend over the toe, depending on some peoples biomechanics, they may benefit from keeping the hips further back and doing more hip hinge than squatting at the bottom
Solid video. I hit deads and captains of crush today. I have the 1, 1.5 and 2. Highly recommend to anyone who has grip or tendinitis issues. Working the grip on the side is a huge help.
Great video, working on my DL now and looking to implement this stance. Will be about an inch closer than my norm so I'm looking forward to it. Thank you Pete !
I discovered the narrow stance dead lift a little while ago, and once I did, my weights just started going up, it seems I'm stronger and can get a better leg drive with the narrow stance and helps with the hip thrust at lock out. I do need to work on the arm positioning you're talking about as when I get heavier on my weights, I tend to not let my arms work as cables like they are supposed to, but end up flexing them quite a bit.
I tried doing deadlifts the starting strength way and my pulls always turn into stiff-legged deadlifts even doing one top set takes a fair bit out of me since I am using a lot of lower back and my upper back is very weak. I was thinking about trying the tip mentioned in this video on Monday when I go back to the gym and see if I can get leg drive in my deadlift. Even with my current lousy deadlift setup I can pull 345lbs for 5 reps for multiple sets which isn't bad but it could be better.
Been watching Pete since he was DLing in the basement Absolutely obscene numbers A mythical creature And to hear Pete himself spit some knowledge about DLs is pretty fuckin cool With that said, how do you feel about the figure 8 straps?
Foot position is body dependent. Also, how the bar travels is key. It can go up the shins. Sometimes having it off the leg can cause the bar to travel forward. Otherwise nice job.
