Last Ditch DLP Color Wheel 'Fix'

  • I say 'fix' because this has a very small chance of working long term. This is a possible way to get your color wheel running until you can get a new one installed. Occasionally it will fix it for a while, but usually it will get you a week or less. Usually not at all, but at this point, you have nothing left to lose. Be careful, the glass is sharp. Thanks for watching.

    DLP TV’s were great for their time, they had a nice area of view and no burn in, amazing brightness and every time you replaced the lamp it was like you had a new TV. Unfortunately, too many moving parts, color wheels failures were common as well as unexpected lamp failures. Back in 2003 I paid $5,300 for my Samsung 65” HLN and that was a great price. The picture quality was amazing even though it at most it was 1080i. I repaired it myself numerous times until it just wasn’t worth repairing anymore. I replaced it last year with a 4K LG 64” OLED for less than half the price of the Samsung. This TV is simply beautiful. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next.

    Have an Optoma hd151x, which had problems with the wheel after 10.000h, making strange noises when changing frequency, sometimes losing sync and shutting down. After desperately cleaning the sensor, it won't start up anymore. Luckily is saw your video. Cleaned the wheel with lots (much, much more than in the video) of alcohol and used a very tiny amount of grease (from simple fat-spray, for bicycles). Perhaps no bad idea, to bath completely in methanol? After nearly standing still, it made 2-3 turns when accelerated with the finger.
    Now the hd151x runs again and the wheel has stopped to make any rattles and pitches + better colors and i've the impression better sharpness.
    I should have done earlier.
    Thank You!

      After 3 years and many extra thousands of hours it became dusty again. This time i did put it in a pot with alcohol for some minutes + air spray + a litte grease.
      ... runs again like a charm. IMHO 99% of CW-failures are caused by dirt in the bearing, accelerated by smoky environment. They should be sealed, too, else this is "planned obsolescence", because the main components of DLP-Projectors are nearly indestructible or easily replaceable, breaking the hearts of the marketing-department, eagerly trying to sell Fake-4K, with way worse contrast and saturation.
      Biggest "experts" on this sector are Casio and their Phosphorus-Wheels often not even running 1000h without getting noisy.

      DLPs are great TVs. When these DLPs were popular, you could get a DLP in a much larger size for less than the price of their wall-mount counterparts. I have several DLPs and they're all still working fine. I've had to make a few repairs, but they're made up of discreet parts, so they can be repaired easily. Wall-mount TVs can't be usually repaired for less than the price of a replacement TV, so they usually get thrown in the trash and replaced with a new TV. DLPs can be repaired and keep going.

      I had one 3LCD projector, it had so bad contrast and black color, that I switched back to this 20s technology. :-) And it had 2 fans and it was more noisy than DLP with loud color wheel, but I agree, it's really archaic technology, but 3LCD is not solution, it has really bad picture.

    Question sir , is it possible to use a different model color wheel of same diameter and attach to frame and harness? i have a section that broke and would like to repair just plastic piece... would colors need to be identical. • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому +1

      The colors do need to be identical. The projector is designed to expect the colors to be in place at specific points of the image being displayed. You can use segments from other color wheel to replace the broken segment. I have glued them in and had it work successfully. However with the price of color wheels being in the $30 range, I tend to buy replacement since I also know the motor and bearings are in good shape. That said, I will use any color wheel that works, to test projectors. If I am not sure if the motor is bad or the circuit is bad, I will plug in any color wheel and it will spin. I wont install it but it tells me that the circuit is ok.

    Frank, I just attempted to replace the color wheel in my Optoma DLP HD26 (similar to HD141). The original had horrible buzzing noise and it was definitely the color wheel. However with the new one in place, the projector turns on and makes horrible random buzzing noise much different than the original sounds like coming from the new one and the colors are like a rave/lightshow flickering really fast coming out of the projection. After watching your video it looks like my infared, or led next to the infared, may still be dirty not being able to monitor the color wheels rotation/rpm. You can hear the rpms go up and down on the color wheel. I am going to tear it back down and try to do it again. Any input on this? Have you heard of this before?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      Probably not. I wouldn't recommend it. Ymmv. The mineral spirits in it may start to cook off and get all of the glass. I find the best option is getting alcohol inside to break up the crud. Gun oil might work in little drops since it is OK with heat and it it might soak back into the oil bronze bushing. That said, if its to the point to where its sticking, you want a new one. For a TV(samsung?) they should be pretty cheap these days. If you can get the hub apart from the stator, you can clean the shaft and that might sort it.

      Hi Flore, If you still have the original color wheel then yes. The symptoms point to the oil bronze bearing being worn out. Most HD70s are on their second or third color wheel by now. • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 років тому

      I don't think lubricating will help. They rely on a dry sleeve bearing due to the heat of the lamp. Any lubricant will cook off pretty quickly. Once they squeal, it means the bearing is beat. Replacing them is not that hard though. eBay has plenty and as long as the seller has a decent rating, you should be fine. www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Color-Wheel-For-DLP-TV-Mitsubishi-WD73840-WD83840-WD92840-WD73640-WD73642/153344875410 as an example.

      Is it doing that two or three times before stopping? The color wheel sensor would be suspect. Also the cable for the color wheel might be reversed. I am not super familiar with that TV chassis. It's been about 6years since I've been in one of those so bear with me.
      I'd check the cable direction (try inverting it) unless you're 100% sure it's right. Otherwise clean the color wheel sensor(small pcb with a photocell) pointing at the wheel hub. Usually has three wires sometimes four. See if that helps at all. Otherwise it's hard to say. Power supplies are known for bad caps. Look up green light of death for that model.
