Watching y'all harvest the potatoes with God's beautiful dirt all over you brings back so many wonderful memories. I grew up on a farm and we raised cotton, corn, and tobacco for our main crops. We had huge produce crops. We also raised cows for milk and butter and meat. We had hogs and chickens. We sold eggs for a living and fried chicken anytime we wanted. We grew potatoes, sweet and white. Butterbeans, peas, tomatoes, squash, collards, cucumbers, peanuts, watermelon, cabbage, and lots more. We had a pecan orchard apples, pears, grapes, cumquats, etc. We went in the woods and picked wild plums, blackberries, huckleberries. What a life. Hard work but better eating than kings. It made believing in God so much easier because we saw all of His blessings and truly our cup overflowed. Thank you for these videos and God bless you both.

Just discovered you two as I have started "trying" to grow through container garden and been watching different videos from others and never quite get the whole part. You two are such a true blessing!! Appreciate the before, during and even after (harvest); explanation of what goes on, what to expect, not just in words, but also video and/or drawings, even the watering amount, how to make the natural pesticide, etc. I can tell that you do all of this so that people like me (black thumb) can fully understand the process. And very thankful that you are showing even in containers as our yard is filled with chipmunks, squirrels, bunnies so hope will yield some foods this way. Definitely subscribed! And love the Scripture at the end of each.

Look for links to parts 1,2,3 etc in the video introduction text. Also you can go to their home page and find series of information you have questions on. It helps to watch all the numbers in the series because they are quite detailed. :) happy growing! ps: I put hoops & tulle or insect netting on top to keep out bunnies (cats are the worst) on the top of all my container starts. It also helps keep bugs at bay. The hoops work on even grow bags, but you have to order bulk online 40-100+ to get reasonable prices or pay expensive prices on plastic ones.

God Bless You Hollis and Nancy. I know this Sweet Potato Series is an older video, but your Urban Garrden is an inspiration. Hollis, you are a wonderful wonderful teacher. You taught me how to grow potatoes in containers with beautiful explaination of the "under the Earth" explanation and drawings. My family is grateful.
This year, we are adding Sweet Potatoes. I am looking forward to this. I am approaching 70 yrs old and have som mobility issues, so container gardening saves me from getting up and down so much and containers are easier for me to handle (my husband isn't so able).
You did your sweets (or Nancy's sweets) in a 20 gal tub and planted 3 slips in each container. For my first attempt, I have 10 slips, but only have 5 gal buckets and I might have a few 7 gallon grow bags. Will one slip per 5 gallon bucket be ok? Or is that too small? I already have these buckets but will have to figure a trellis.
I love the two of you. Thank you.
    Very Sincerely,
    Shalom168

For a trellis, you might use a premade wire grid used in concrete work. Drive a couple of metal fence posts in the ground, then use tie/baling wire to fasten a stick of 3/4" metal conduit to the posts. Then, tie the wire grid to those conduits and fence posts.

I'm enjoying your videos, which are inspiring me in my first year of container-grown vegetables. I have one tub of soil in my greenhouse and stuck a rooted & sprouted white-fleshed red sweet potato just like yours in it. My brother gave it to me - I've never eaten any. I'm like you - I like the orange ones! Did you know that the oriental people eat the leaves of all kinds of sweet potatoes? My mother's Filipino neighbors buy the "ornamental" types and plant them for the leaves - they didn't know those same leafy greens were making taters underneath!

You can root a few of those vines and keep them as a nice house plant all winter. That way, you don't have to deal with rooting sweet potatoes for slips. Just trim off some vine from your houseplant and root them in watet. Much easier. Oh' and there are hundreds of varieties available.

I planted my own slips this year after watching you. We harvested yesterday and got 6 lbs for 2 containers. We were very pleased. Our slips were planted a bit late, June in fact. I will start my slips earlier next year. We had no diseased or damaged ones. They were not huge but acceptable sizes for what we like...baked sweet potatoes. I will be ready for Jan. Oh, my original potato that I got my slips from was still growing slips yesterday. It had 3 smaller potatoes attached too. I had put it in the soil of another potted pepper just for the slips. It was fun to watch all season. Thanks!

It is fun to harvest together! Nancy says I can't have all the fun. 😍. Nancy has a video on the channel called Tater Candy. She used the little bitty taters in the video but you can do the same thing with sweet taters. Don't throw away those pencil thin taters, they are perfect for tater candy👍

My wife and I discovered Korean sweet potatoes last year. We love them. I like to bake a nice size one til it's soft, cut it open, put it in a bowl, smash it down a bit and top it with 2 sunny side up eggs. Add some sea salt and pepper, it is soooooo good. Thx for sharing your hard work with us. Best regards, Bill

gosh us filipinos would make a salad out of the leaves, don't throw them out. Leaves can be boiled for a couple minutes then chopped, add onion slices, garlic, ginger, vinegar, soy sauce, tomatoes, mango slices and chilis, and voila - what a yummy salad.

Hey Hollis and Nancy. So I just harvested my first sweet potato crop after using your instructions and I am so happy. I got 10 lbs of potato from 2 pots with 3 slips each. Question: Should i wash them off right away? Do I need to let them sit for a while? They seem a bit moist. Also, a few of them are a little green on the ends; is that still edible? Thanks Eric

But I want to ask, do you fertilize your veggies as you go along or the first you do is the only one that stays till harvest? I await your response. J

I did have a few normal shaped ones. It was a pain to get them cut up but boy were they delicious. They were some strange breed I got off eBay. I must of missed some because the plants growing everywhere.

The leaves of sweet potatoes can be eaten. They are very nutricious green leafy vegetables. Steam the leaves and young stalk for 2-4 mins cook. Drain from water, dress them with lemon and fish sauce. They taste so good and combine this with your fried fish meal and rice👍😉😋
