Looks like a great project. Something I learned years ago was to place a floor mat, heavy towel or blanket on any chair, rope or cable I was pulled items with to dampen the recoil the chain or cable if it broke.
Instead of bolting a chain, I cut a slot in the side of the pipe big enough to accept the chain hook. I pass the chain thru the tube and then around the back of the bush and hook the slot. Took about 5 minutes to make and works great
Consider using about 2 feet on your short chain. That way, the hook of the attached chain is on the other side of your pipe choker and less likely to pull loose. I made one similar... works great!!
That is a cool idea I've got some pampas grass I'd like to pull up. Back in the days as a LEO i use to pick up long lengths of heavy duty chain dropped from big rigs on the highway. I use to think of it as my blue light special😂 chains, those big yellow tie down straps and tools.

You need that for a cable because they will store energy. A chain will just fall to the ground when it breaks.

You dont need a bigger chain you need a quality chain.
You got that right !!! Fortunately, I found a log chain in the garage, but I need to go to a bigger tube. Found one that might work..... stay tuned !!
