Will the route planning software, on the car, takes into account the temperature on the day we leave, and propose much earlier charging stops, until the weather warms up?
Kyle is far too fond of his own voice these days… I’m getting to the point where I turn him off because he never shuts up. It takes him 20 mins to start driving the car he’s telling us is all about the drive.
Hi Principal Bob! Question for you: how much more energy does the IONIQ 5 burn going up to the mountains? I live in Grand County, and I’m thinking of getting one…but I’m curious about mountain driving. I’d love to hear about your experience with mountain driving.
Snow tires are not optional here.I never understood the "they want to rip us off" attitude anyway. It's not as if I am driving my summer and winter tires off at the same time... AWD helps if I want to reach my house 365 days per year (very steap, narrow, bent), so I am used to that. Now nobody talking about it, but I need to stress it: EV AWD is vastly superior to ICE AWD. The fast speed changes and finer speed control of electric motors and the completely independent axle power distribution makes my Ioniq 6 a better icey narrow road climber than my old W460 G-class ever was..
Bob, I only have about 5/32 tread on the original tires on my ID4 rwd. I am extremely happy with traction and braking. Stops in a straight line from 40 mph. Traction control, I can floor it and it just eases away.
Great to hear. I have driven all types of ID.4s in all kinds of weather and I always felt that the backside of the car would swing out with very little fuel in icy weather. Also, I cannot get people in Colorado to even consider a front wheel car. RWD tend to sit on dealer lots in Colorado. Too bad, because they are a great buy.
A lot has to do with what people are led to believe. Look at the number of people that believe an election was stolen after all the real proof to the contrary. Front drive was an idea (I believe a fraud) perpetrated by Chrysler to eliminate the driveshaft tunnel. It gave a more comfortable and roomy interior. The worst ice/snow car I’ve ever owned was a ‘79 Rivera front drive. Too much power. Steering and accelerating with the same wheels. You don’t see many front drive race cars. I like your videos. I am amazed at ev owner conversations where it’s obvious they don’t know their car and never read the manual. I used to pour over Car and Driver technical specs where the kept a running list of cars and such things as skid pad ratios and braking distances. I had friends less technically oriented (I’m an engineer) that would roll their eyes when I started quoting data. Thanks.
@@electricprincipal543don’t people know about snow tires? I used to drive a BMW 328iS in Michigan and with a snow tire set of wheels, it performed much better than wife’s FWD Saab 9000 with all season tires. Snow tires solve most traction issues regardless of driven wheels.
People know about them Barry...they just don't want to pay for them. I think the cost is a wash over a few short years. Thanks for sharing your insights on the video. @@barryw9473
I’m picking up an Ioniq 6 this week. I’m in Michigan, and don’t plan to install L2 charging at home until summertime. I’m going to charge at work. When I leave on a colder morning with not being plugged into a charger overnight, does setting that departure time also take steps to warm the completely cold battery, or does that not happen until I’m moving down the road?
You will soon get an update that will allow you to do this. Also, they are going to have a button you can push to start pre-charging without having to choose a destination. That’s how the new electric works. For now set your departure time and turn on the heating so the car warms up. Hopefully you don’t have too far to drive so that your level one charger can keep up. It only puts out about .6 kW so it’s not much.

The car won't do scheduled warming if it's not connected to an outlet.
That's -10 F right not -10 C. Wow, yes that's cold. Perhaps you should specify that as most people on earth use C?
