    Wow, this video is EXCELLENT. I have been trying to navigate this mysterious secret world of smog test, dmv, sensor not ready and "just keep driving more miles" . Been struggling with this for few months now. I jumped my battery 2 weeks ago so didn't pass the the smog due to No Data.
    So I did drive cycle for 150 miles and got everything ready except for catalyst monitor So here is what I did :
    Cold start overnight
    Idle for 15 minutes
    Revved 3,000 rpm for 3 minutes
    (It would jump after 2 minutes but kept going)
    Drove about 2 miles
    (to Advanced auto parts to pick up the DTC (OBD2) scanner without turning off the engine)
    Connected scanner and drove to freeway
    At speed of 50 mph for 3~5 minutes then drove 45 mph for 2 minutes then the CATALYST monitor changed to Ready status. So I took it to smog station and passed in couple days after.

It may just take a few extra cycles. Once you do this twice then focus on only the unset monitors, I can help you when you get that stage when all of your monitors are set except one.

    I'm planning to do my drive cycle tomorrow for my 2007 Rav4 2.4L. However, today I had a cylinder misfire code P0304. In order to validate it, I disconnected the coils one at a time to see if engine behavior reacts to the disconnected coil. The engine sound changed every time I disconnected a coil. I hope that means that coils were fine. Then I connected ODB2 and I got 4 more codes one for each coil in addition to the cylinder 4 misfire Code. The ODB2 monitor also read: 7 complete, but only 3 N/As. I used to have 4 N/A's in the past. I cleared all codes to prepare for the drive cycle. Few questions:
    1- Do you think I should go head and do inspection again since I have 7 complete monitors, or should I do the drive cycle to be safe since I cleared the codes?
    2- Do you think I should have disconnected the battery after the coil test to reset them? I know that will mess up the idle and I need to do a relearn.

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  Рік тому

      You don’t need to disconnect Evet coil, locate cylinder 4, google it if your have to, it will give the diagram of the engine, as far going in for the test it all depends on where you live but your check engine light cannot be on when even if all the monitors are complete.

    This video has great info! I changed the battery on my 2013 Toyota Corolla about a month ago. Now the car won't pass smog because the OBDII Monitors are reading "Not Ready," for both the Oxygen Sensor and the Catalyst. The TWO mechanics I went to told me to just keep driving the car. I have already driven 400 miles since the initial smog test. 🙄 I'm going to try these Drive Cycles and see if they work. Does my car need to have a cold engine when starting these Drive Cycles?

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, a cold start would be good for the o2 sensor and allow for ample time to warmup and the longer your car sits without moving the hotter the catalyst will get which can make it easier. Just make sure you car is well ventilated area and all the cooling systems are working so it doesn't not over heat. Just let it idle for 20 minutes plus, most of the time the catalyst will set after the oxygen sensor sets. Good luck and keep me in the loop. If you want to see it action and see the fast and dirty version here is the video ua-cam.com/video/jldTJI64cfM/v-deo.html make sure you don't not reset the obd2 readiness as you only have 2 monitors that need to get set.

    Amazing how many people you help and how you reply to so many people's comments/questions.
    I have several questions, some due to the challenges of doing a catalyst drive cycle around San Francisco, which you mentioned in one of your videos is a difficult place to perform your various recommended monitor drive cycles.
    1) Can the catalyst monitor become ready independent of the O2 sensor monitor, or does the O2 sensor monitor need to become ready before the catalyst monitor can become ready?
    2) The enabling criteria you listed for the catalyst drive cycles did not specify a cold start (i.e. one where the engine has been off for 4-8 hrs). Do you still recommend that cycle be started from a cold start, and if so, why?
    3) I can understand why the drive cycle for the EVAP monitor has to be started with at most 3/4 tank of gas because you want to see how it clears all the gas fumes in the empty airspace,. But why can't you do a catalyst or O2 sensor drive cycle with a full or near full tank? The enabling criteria you list for catalyst monitor drive cycles only says to have a tank more than 15% full (nothing about a tank being no more than 3/4 full)
    4) Is it really important (and if so why?) for the catalyst monitor drive cycles to go immediately from warm up to 55 mph? If it takes 10-15 min of city traffic with lights and stops signs to get to the highway, will that greatly reduce the effectiveness of the drive cycle? If so and a cold start is not necessary, why can't I drive close to the entrance ramp of a highway, turn the engine off for several minutes, then start the catalyst drive cycle with the warmup?
    5) During that initial 55 mph run, is there a problem if you go for 45 min instead of 7 min, 45 min is how long it would take me to get to an exit ramp and smaller road where I could safely switch to fluctuating between 35 and 45 mph for 16 min.
    6) Is it critical that you coast down from 55 to 35-45 mph without dipping slower than 35 or even stopping. If I get off a highway exit ramp to shift from the faster to the slower speed, I may be forced to slow or stop before getting onto the second smaller road.
    7) If, during my 16 min run fluctuating from 35-45 mph, I'm forced to stop at a light, does that disrupt the entire cycle, forcing me to start again from the beginning, or can I just start a new 16 min run to complete the cycle?
    Thanks for all your excellent videos.

      @RANDOMFIX  Місяць тому

      Lots of great questions and feedback m.
      The o2 monitor normally sets first but there are times the o2 monitor sets last. O2 monitor is connected to the upstream o2 sensor data and the downstream o2 sensor data is normally in charge of clearing the catalyst monitor.
      As far as the gas level at 3/4 vs 85 percent , 3/4 is just easier to understand and estimate from the fuel gauge.
      No cold start is needed to ready the catalyst but it helps if you let the vehicle warm up for an extended period of time before driving, you can drive at low speeds of course on the way to freeway but the higher speeds help get the catalyst hotter.
      I think I mentioned in the video after 2 attempts focus only on the unset monitor, the evap is still exempt in California. I’m currently visiting California in the Bay Area until Monday and that why I still mention California in my videos as I’ve moved to Texas. In my area of Texas there is smog test which is really nice.

      @@RANDOMFIX I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla with 108,000 miles that I was gifted and am trying to transfer to a California title and registration. After replacing the battery, I drove the car over the course of 3 day about 150-200 miles, mostly on the highway at 55-60 mph (on highways 280 and 101). I don't have my own monitor device, so I'm going a little blind. The Smog Check station kindly told me without charge that my Oxygen sensor, Catalyst, and EVAP were still "incomplete" and (in accord with your videos) that I didn't have to worry about the EVAP monitor. So I only have to focus on getting the Oxygen Sensor and Catalyst ready. Do you have a particular route that you recommend for doing drive cycles for these monitors in the San Francisco Bay Area?

      @JoachimLi-zd3ci got it, watch this video ua-cam.com/video/Yn1-ul62Jio/v-deo.htmlsi=4oN5f854eb_YCi20
      As you need to confirm that battery is ideal or near perfect. Just because it can start your corolla doesn’t mean that is it’s good.
      Once the battery checks out then start the vehicle and just let it idle. Don’t touch move the vehicle or touch the gas pedal. Let it idle for 20 to minutes. I have an actual drive cycle here ua-cam.com/video/jldTJI64cfM/v-deo.htmlsi=XtZ6_aiozAULITjt
      I would do twice, once with the air conditioning off and another time with air conditioning on full blast with the rear defrost, this will help the o2 sensor.
      Then hit freeway at steady speeds between 55 to 65 mph for the catalyst. Inclines can also help with this as well.
      You should get your own obd2 reader as it’s cheaper than putting in $5+ gas am this once is great ua-cam.com/video/SguhiTfgpFQ/v-deo.htmlsi=MZY6MKclRjDnZ6cu

      @@RANDOMFIX Catalytic converter and EVAP monitors converted to ready. I had to go up around Bodega Bay at 5 am on a Sat morning to get clear roads to do your drive cycle. One thing I made sure to do based on some of the other comments is your 3000 rpm 3 min engine revving at the beginning of the cycle.
      Unfortunately, the A/F- O2 sensor monitor is still incomplete. So then I went down the peninsula 65 mph on US 280 to the exit for Golf Course Road next to Crystal Springs Reservoir. Braked/coasted on exit ramp to about 20 mph, then went to small parking lot next to exit to idle. At the other end of Golf Coarse Road there is also a parking lot for the golf course where I could idle. The stretch of road between the two lots is sparsely used and takes about 2 min to travel down at 25 mph. So went back and forth 10 times. But that didn't ready the A/F-O2 sensor monitor. So now I am going to finally take your advise and buy my own OBD2 reader (the Sunset 76 auto repair shop/smog station that installed my brand new Interstate battery has been very kindly checking my monitors every day for me) and going to make another go at the A/F-O2 drive cycle until the reader tells me I've cleared that monitor.
      Unfortunately, with the Golf Course road route I cannot enter that A/F-O2 drive cycle from a cold start. However, from your videos it appears the only drive cycle that you emphasize needs a cold start is the Oxygen Heater monitor. But let me know if the A/F-O2 is best done from a cold start, because then I'm going to have to figure out a new route. Also:
      1) does it makes a difference if I idle in Drive or Park.
      2) is it really critical to coast from 65 mph to idle with no braking
      3) do I also need to coast from each 25 mph run to idle?
      4) are there maximum times for the idle or the 25 mph stretches?
      5) is it possible that my A/F-O2 sensors could be defective without triggering a check engine light

      @@JoachimLi-zd3ci Final report. I finally was able to successfully reset the A/F-O2 sensor monitor using the drive cycle specialize for those two sensors. The most obvious difference from the previous attempts, which were not successful, was that I started from a cold start (car resting for > 8 hrs) and after warming up in idle for 15 min I did your 3 min 3000 rpm engine revving in park. To much variability to pin the success on that difference, but people may want to keep that in mind.

    Great video, but the driving cycle is going to be impossible mission for me living here in L.A. due to heavy traffic most of the times and in residential areas there are too many limitations. If I do it at night I will be at the mercy of the criminals that the stupid democrats released from prison to comply with "social justice" or the police might think that I am looking for prostitutes once I deaccelerate and then stop and leave the vehicle at idle. They could also think that I am drug dealing. I might have to go to a rural area outside L.A. where there aren't stop sign, no traffic lights and very little to no traffic. We, CA drivers are paying for the money that our politicians spent without limit during the peak of the pandemic because my friends' cars that are newer than my car failed the smog check last month. One was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2017 Honda Accord. Those crooks in Sacramento manipulate the computers to make a lot of cars fail the smog check. This is the beginning of the campaign to get rid of gasoline vehicles to make everyone get into debt to buy electric vehicles which are expensive and expensive to maintain. All this shit is to fatten the pockets of special interest groups who hide behind global warming and pro environment. The earth froze for millions of years without humans having nothing to do with it. What was the cause of the Ice Age? My sister was a devout customer of Toyota for many years and she switched to Honda and she hasn't had any problems at all and no problems passing the smog check either. Toyota and Nissan have gone down the drain. My mechanic gets a lot of customers who own Nissan vehicles and they all face a similar problem, the transmission. Nissan has manufactured bad transmissions and that applies to all their models. I have only owned Toyota and Nissan vehicles, but I won't go with Toyota and Nissan anymore. They have become a SCAM.

      I hear you and sorry to hear about your experience at the Toyota dealer. Honda does have it's set of problems too,like excessive oil consumption. The 4 cylinder Honda engine better then the V6 engines. The also had lot of transmission issue on the V6 models. This is not really a Toyota or Honda problem, the issue is California and their crazy rules.

      Also, the oil pan leak had nothing to do with smog test unless it was excessive.

      @@RANDOMFIX I know it has nothing to do with the smog check, but he claimed that if I didn't fix that problem, it could affect the engine.
