- Lord Sumption has criticised government plans to impose a maximum 10-year jail sentence for people do not tell the truth about their travel history.
Speaking with talkRADIO's Ian Collins, the former Supreme Court justice said: “The courts will be very reluctant, except perhaps in the case of repeat offenders, to impose prison sentences at all. I can’t believe the government is using the criminal law system as a platform for irresponsible rhetoric.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the policy, along with strict quarantine measures for international arrivals, to stop coronavirus variants entering the UK.

My immediate question: what are they going to do when I refuse to pay £1,750 to be imprisoned in a hotel? If it's applied as a fee for entering the country then I'll simply ask the magistrate for time to pay. At £1/month it should be paid-off by 2167, should I live to 204.
The judges are our last line of defence. They won't enforce this, just like they don't enforce fixed penalty fines for covid violations. One hand of the law doesn't know what the other hand is doing.
No cost and analysis exercise. Just decrees, crazy.

We were taking steps before the first lockdown to move to another area of the country to live before our retirement. I am now seriously considering moving out of the UK having lived here all my life. If such a precedent was set, that the possibility of the transmission an infection could result in a criminal prosecution and a long prison term, then we would be in very dark days indeed. Would anyone with an illness, or just for medical tests, risk going to see health professionals knowing the consequences to their liberty.

I implore the British public to simply stop relying on the government, stop voting, stop taking part in public discourse and focus on issues in your community and neighbourhood. You don’t need a government in order to live, thrive, survive or protect your family. Stop voting and taking part and even form your own local councils and see how they react to that.
Why would they care? They still demand their taxes, they still stop you travelling. They will just push further and further, until they are stopped. By direct action.
