As someone who works with developing public service web sites it is SO neat to have an "almost" plug'n'play 2FA component to handle federated security. Also note that NemID will be replaced by MitID in 2021 (due to tender requirements), if you want to geek about it on a deeper tech level. Finally - thank you for the video :)
nemID ( now replaced by MitID enables the high degree of digitalization in Denmark, such as doing our taxes easily online, e-Boks and direct digital access to your patient records and hospital appointments etc. You should do another video on e-Boks.
What is really impressive is how smoothly a government initiative like NemID has been adapted by private corporations (bank logins, signing digital contracts with companies etc). Rarely have I seen corporations implement something as huge as NemID seamlessly.
In Sweden. It's the other way around. The government was so slow with creating a digital identification system, the banks got there first (BankID). And now everyone else has to adapt to that. Including the government.

In the Netherlands, we have DigID. It is only used for government stuff, taxes and insurance. Banks all have their own log in systems, Rabobank gives you a scanner that you put your card in and then scan a qr for a one time use number for confirmation of the transaction. On top of that, we have ridiculously easy to use mobile pay and digital transactions, like iban, tikkie and wiebetaaltwat.

Back in the day before NemID you had to have a key file on your computer to log into your bank account. Don't remember what you used in other places like SKAT and such. But NemID certainly is much easier than it ever was!
Can’t find it in the comments, but I am convinced that someone must have mentioned the NemID app? Anyway, that thing takes the clunkiness of using the card all the time out of the equation. At the same time you won’t run out of logins. So that has been a nice step forward. Especially if you have a company NemID and a private one. So - no cards, just apps. There have been some 3rd party apps offering to scan your card and sort of give you the digital feeling of the analogue card. Great video btw. You should also try the cake “napoleonshat”! That’s a dream come true 😀 Enjoy Denmark 👍🏼
The centralised nature of NemID is definitely a good thing usability-wise. It also poses a security risk, though. NemID can (and sometimes must) be used for many things other than just logging in to websites (including banks); e.g. for signing legal documents, including to sell your house. NemID is actually based on public and private keys, and in a setup like that, YOU as the user would normally be the only one to hold your own private key. This is not the case with NemID, though. All private keys are stored by Nets, which poses (at least) two problems: First of all, it's a giant target for hackers, because you only have to hack one place, and all of a sudden you have 3+ million people's private keys. Second, as Nets holds your private key, they could authenticate/authorise actions on your behalf (sell your house, send legally binding e-mail signed with your key), and there would be no way for you to prove that you were not the one to perform the actions. Before NemID, we actually did hold our own private keys. The private key was even generated on the local computer. But it was just way too difficult for "normies" to use, so it was never really widely adopted. NemID made it much more usable (well, making it basically mandatory by law helps too, of course), but private keys really shouldn't be stored centrally.
I actually wanna say thank you for this video. NemID has a really bad reputation among most people and we are often super annoyed by it, like you also were. But hearing about how things are in the US and your perspective of being "annoyed, yet appreciative" was actually super nice for me as a Dane, who doesn't have the reference of how life is without NemID.
I used to be really annoyed by NemID, back when you had to use this very annoying keycard with all the codes on. But after I began using the NemID app I've come to like it a lot. It's actually super easy... barely an inconvenience. :-)
Its the same in Sweden and think Norway( it’s called the same ) BankID it’s so good it’s sad that other countries don’t have it I really did think they did in USA now 🤯

CPR, Nem-ID, e-boks & borger.dk blows everyones minds.Used in Norway and Iceland too, Sweden and Estonia has a similar solutions. Ireland dreams of having it. Denmark and Southkorea are the most 'digital countries in the world, closely trailed by Estonia.
Swedish eqvivalent is Bank-ID/Mobile Bank-ID. With this I can identify myself against banks, insurance, state and local services online, tax return, health services, Identify myself when I get packages. and a lot more. Its very convinient. All state and local services uses it, which means I have only one password to remember and the services doesn't have the hassle of administration of users identification process.
One thing to mention is that NemID is not just for logging in but you can also use it to digitally sign contracts from the bank or the government instead of signing them on paper and mailing them back.
oh wow, i thought a lot of places had their version of NemID going on! Definately US among those places! Glad you feel good about it, even if it takes a little more time getting through and done with stuff
This was interesting and not boring at all👍 Remember not to show or give your Nemid numbers or information to anybody. Not even people that claims to be from a bank or the police. Btw you need the nemid app(and not the card) to buy things on the internet. I haven’t used my nemid card for a couple of years
Nice hat Maya 😀 there were some problems implementing the nemid in Denmark and abit of a resistence from the older part of the population. But over time people have gotten used to it.
In Sweden we have BankID, it began in about 2000-2001, and now about 80% of the Swedes have it. And you use it for EVERYTHING! It is the greatest thing ever.
Digital signatur where nemID is version 2.0 was invented by PBS, DM data, KMD and TDC and owned by TDC, this was back in 2002/2003, then in 2010 Nets came with the NemID solution since the Digital signatur wasn’t Secure enough. So no Banks was behind this. MobilePay on the other hand was done mainly by Danske Bank but is it’s own Company now. SWIFT was a cooperation between the largest Banks in Denmark but after Danske Bank broke out due to there mobile pay solution, SWIFT died in Denmark even though the solutions was different, so now we have Mobile pay in DK and SWIFT in Sweden, Finland and Norway.
Trifork, the company who developed NemID are going public in two weeks. They also developed MobilePay with Danske Bank. Is has been listed before but now they want to be back as a listed company on the stock exchange of Copenhagen.

Awesome to follow you, and I hope you guys will have a great stay :D Never have I been thinking about how great Nem-id is before, but man, it really is something, right? haha xD oh btw Kaj Kage is normally something we got as kids, and when we grow up most danes would choose something else :D glad you enjoy it!
In Sweden we have BankID, either as an app on your phone, or as a file on your computer. But no card. To log in to your bank we have a small device where you log in with your atm pin and it generates a 8 digit pin.
I live in Sweden. Here we have an equivalent called BankID that is used for logging on to virtually every government agency or bank, even in your phone app. It’s certificate based as is the Danish version. It’s great for security. Now you can even log in using a QR code that changes every second to prevent phishing by calling ppl up and tricking them to log in with BankID while the scammer is already logging in to your bank on their end. With QR login that is impossible to do.
I was startled by the dramatic end scene where Kaj almost took a drop to the floor. Love how you guys can combine a walkthrough experience of NemID together with Kaj a cake taste test. It pretty much sums up everyday life of a dane ;-) And a side-note; very important as the man said by observation, that you need to get the full bite of all the key elements of a Kaj cake to fulfill the tasting experience, as there is definitely limits to green-colored marcipan.
Great video. The Nem-ID thing might be a little annoying since you have to do that extra step, but it is likely worth it in todays world. Important extra info for people outside Denmark: 1: It is now required for all e-shopping here that payment uses the extra Nem-ID steps. 2: The whole Nem-ID thing is also tied to the E-box. Every dane have an E-box (its the law). ALL - and I repeat ALL communication from the state, city, bank, doctor and so on goes there. It is like an extra secure email. It also means that unless you got special exception, you ONLY get digital documents - no paper.
I think some times we take it for granted here in Denmark. It is amazing how many systems can integrate to it, so if you wanna see your taxes, bank account, parking licenses, all official mail (which isn't sent in paper version anymore unless you are digitally exempt) etc. It just works so well, and definitely with the app authentication integration (which is a relatively new option, before it was just the paper version) without having to create accounts for everything, is just so nice And +1 for the Kaj kage haha. Basically the official meme mascot of the denmark subreddit :D
It’s also used now when we shop on the internet, i really love that, because then nobody Can use your visa card without the code you get on a textmessage
Just be sure to set a PIN on your SIM-card, and set your phone to NOT display the message until you've unlocked the phone. Otherwise a thief can snag your phone, and use that as two-factor authentication without even having to unlock it.
Keeping a password/loginbook, in your bookshelve is a good idea, if you have multiple places you need login acess to, and only use some of them every 3rd or 4th year.
During these covid times you can buy Kaj cake with a covid mask on which looks kind of hilarious and cute😅 I remember it was in the news some time ago 😅
Interesting to hear your point of view on this subject. I am Swedish living in Denmark, and I think there is a slightly better version in Sweden, called BankId. One step less. With NemId you login first and then accept. With BankId you skip the first step and accept the request with your login. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts, as Americans, on e-boks. This feels like a really important step to have less paper documents, receiving your mail in your private inbox, from banks, officials etc. I really like it. Hope you are enjoying your stay in Denmark. /Jessica
Two factor identification is basically a necessity in this modern world. I also recommend using a password manager, which makes it much more likely that you not only remember all your passwords as well as using very secure and unique passwords. My password manager also lets me know if there's been security breaches at any of the sites where I have a user account and password. The last thing to consider is using a VPN. If you're using all of these, you're definitely much less likely to become a victim of online fraud or hacking.
Is it sort of what we have in Sweden? -The "BankID" or "Mobilt BankID". The app is fantastic and hooks into basically every purchase I make. I put in my personal security number at the checkout and it instantly pops up in my app, at least online. With the app I can now use fingerprint to identify myself and it made everything hassle free.
Maybe something you missed. When my sister and brother came to visit me in Australia, they had a nemld card with 10 different codes on it, and they can only use each code once.
I think you should probably mention the e-boks (e-box) public mail environment. Where all public mail can be sent in a secure email and also private actors like bank, insurance companies and so forth can communicate with you. The e-boks system can be seen as an extensions to the hole digital ecosystem of public IT.
Fun part is the Danish word "nemt" means "easy". We have a similar solution in Sweden called BankID. And it really makes life a lot easier. At some point the EU will probably bring forth a standardized solution, based on the Scandinavian ones. It's super relevant now, with the need for secure proof of vaccination.
Such an important topic to talk about. NemID is also used for purchases online in Danish online stores, which makes it virtually imposible to steal a Credit card and use it in danish online shops. You'd need to steal the credit card and the nemID card(wallet) that is doable and why you should not carry NemID in your wallet. OR in the case with the NemID app: The phone, which is also locked with a different code, which mean for mine, a patern code for the phone, an app code for the app and a code for the NemID system on the webpage.
We have the same concept in Sweden called BankID. Works very well with health care, banks, credit cards, tax authority etc., i.e. anywhere were you have to authenticate you are really you and the only thing I need is my Phone.

Well.. That is a pretty good reason to make sure your NemID and Mobile pay works.. Cocio.. Maya is a smart woman!
It is so funny as a Dane to watch these videos because these things you talk about is just so normal for us here in Denmark 🇩🇰
You can get help with NemID in every municipality in Denmark, (not only where You live) providing you show up in person with correct dokumentation. Thank you for a good video.
Kajkager 😆❤
Its such a greesy cake, but its a darn good one 👌🏻
*greasy
Well. Being a programmer i would like to thank you from all of us for trying to make the world more secure!
More people need to start securing their online presence. We see way too much scamming and identity theft these days. :(
You guys are adorable❤️ thanks for showing NemID some love. So many Danes take it for granted and feel annoyed but it’s actually pretty awesome. The app really helps though:) it’s one of the many things that are just super easy accessible and organised in Denmark but that we Danes take for granted. After having spend time in the US and Asia I appreciates lot of things here:)
I love to hear your perspectives on Danish things 💖
I love your positive angle😊 I must admit beeing born in 1961 it's been quite the jorney getting comfortable on line. I guess the perspective of security is the way to think about nem id.
Cocio and hotdog on a summer day .... mmh .... a small slice of heaven! .... Love your VODS (Dane who's been living in Atlanta, GA since 2001)
What I find is insanely impressive with this kind of system which is similar i Sweden is that you can log in to a new place, maybe first time log in to start a business, first time checking your pension, start new bank. For all these usages we can access an begin with only logging in. There is no signing up. All Swedes are ready and you initiate through logging in. It is incredible. Thanks for interesting vids.
If you're short of ideas for "Try it on a tuesday" ....well, here is one suggestion!
When the weather gets a little bit better, you should definetly go to Frederiksdal and rent a canoe and spend a couple of hours on Mølleåen.

As a former expatriate living in Saudi Arabia (dad had a job there and I attended to an American international school for 4 years), I have been watching your Chanel for a while now and I love your content!
Living in Frederiksværk myself now, I immediately recognized “Rådhuset” behinde Maya and I wondered. “What an odd place for some one living I CPH to go and get their Nem I’d fixed?” Was that deliberate as for you to make a trip of it?
By the way if you ever visit Frederiksværk again there is an amazing Burger/Bagel joint by the last roundabout before Hundested called Grillværket. This place makes a fantastic Bearnaise burger (among other good stuff) of which I can’t recommend enough.
I wish you many a happy times I Denmark.
Thanks!
We were up there because Maya goes to efterskole close to Hundested. We needed to do it during her school day so we did it at the closest rådhuset to her school. We are there every so often picking her up and dropping her off so we will have to check out the place you mention during one trip.
We have something like this in Sweden, called Bank-id.
We logg in with it everywhere and identify us when we shop online.
As a native of Denmark there was even a few facts about NemID I didn't know 😁
I really hope you guys are enjoying your new home.
I really love watching your videoes! Seeing your vision on how Denmark are different to the US and your experiences :P Makes my day!!
Thanks!
Its just crazy how far behind in tech americans are they litterally use checks instead of sending money and paying with their phone
Including the government.
danish ti hi -hej med jer er først lige begyndt at se jeres videoer ,og de er ret fede og underholdende plus masser af info ;-) i forgot to ask -the winged buffel any of you are native ;-)
Thank you, guys. Wonderful to see 3rd party reviews of my country's contraptions 😉
Please do some more.
How about "reaction videos" where you tell friends in the US about some of the things You've experienced here?
Finally one of the videos I have asked about for some time 😁.
Btw with all the times you said two factor authentication it could just as well have been a giveaway to the person who counted all the times it was said😂.
Also good you liked the Kaj Kage
A shame you probably won't understand the songs from Kaj og Andrea
Back in the day before NemID you had to have a key file on your computer to log into your bank account. Don't remember what you used in other places like SKAT and such. But NemID certainly is much easier than it ever was!
For SKAT you had your CPR-number (like the American SSN), and a "tast selv" code on the top of your tax return letter.
I can barely remember that, and I turned 18 in the first half of 2008. So we have had NemID for around 12 years.
@@Snarcksa right, the old fashioned 2 factor authentification by mail 😄
@Jacob Wain Svensson right, Digital Signatur was the name of it 😄
Cool to hear your perspective as not Scandinavians! Thanks for that :)
That’s a dream come true 😀
Enjoy Denmark 👍🏼
@@lbernau Haha! I know that reference! Wanna pitch a movie idea?
“Most people”. Only among the liberal (in Danish context) who doesn’t like anything government controlled.
Its the same in Sweden and think Norway( it’s called the same ) BankID it’s so good it’s sad that other countries don’t have it I really did think they did in USA now 🤯
Don't even start to take a look at the hoops US citizens have to go through just to do their taxes.
Every european country probably has it. In estonia its called smartid
As a tech nerd, you must also love our (Denmarks) electronic driving license app, so when you have your phone with you, you also have your driving license, NemId, credit card and access to your health data.
It is good to hear you on it ;)
In Jylland we eat these with the grab of a hand, good job Youngs 👌🏻😀
true that. :D
You are so uncivilized over there that im not surprised by that ;p
Cocio a good solid reason to get mobilpay, I totalt understand Maya. And Nem-id makes so many Things Easy, Never boring to Tune in a listen to your findings while Living in Denmark👍
The app got me loving nemID even more - so easy!
We have a similar Bank Id system in Sweden... I've never even considered it, it's just normal...
Every european country probably has this system
oh wow, i thought a lot of places had their version of NemID going on!

I haven’t used my nemid card for a couple of years
I would suggest having a password manager to prevent reusing passwords.
Nice hat Maya 😀 there were some problems implementing the nemid in Denmark and abit of a resistence from the older part of the population. But over time people have gotten used to it.
hahah working in tech, I love seeing you try to stop saying "authentication". Fun stuff. Thanks for the info. Love this.
In Sweden we have BankID, it began in about 2000-2001, and now about 80% of the Swedes have it. And you use it for EVERYTHING! It is the greatest thing ever.
Fun fact in regards to banks being liable to fraudulent transactions. It was actually the banks in Denmark that invented NemID.
In Norway it is still called BankId, but is now used for a lot of other things.
Not invented, but cooperated to create the system. And at the moment it is owned and managed by an Italian company
@@kimf.wendel9113 which means we are screwed!
Is has been listed before but now they want to be back as a listed company on the stock exchange of Copenhagen.
as a Dane, it is really nice to follow you guys in here. It puts everything into perspective, and it seems like you are having a good time here.
Important extra info for people outside Denmark:
1: It is now required for all e-shopping here that payment uses the extra Nem-ID steps.
It just works so well, and definitely with the app authentication integration (which is a relatively new option, before it was just the paper version) without having to create accounts for everything, is just so nice
And +1 for the Kaj kage haha.
@@Snarcksa they wont be able, because they need a nem-id number too :)
I definitely recommend getting the NemID app for your phone. It’s so much more convenient on the go than the code card.
I have the same pass-word on all accounts. Six black dots. It’s sooo bloody simple and easy to remember. •••••• Enter. 😁👌
🤣🤣🤣
Interesting approach with the wargame.
Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us 👍😀
Keeping a password/loginbook, in your bookshelve is a good idea, if you have multiple places you need login acess to, and only use some of them every 3rd or 4th year.
During these covid times you can buy Kaj cake with a covid mask on which looks kind of hilarious and cute😅
I remember it was in the news some time ago 😅
Ha, funny! Wish I saw one of those :).

Isn't that kind of insecure? I'd like to know what I'm granting access to before I actually do it.
Every teen in Denmark have mesed up nem-id
Love you guys.
You guys should do and Q & A!
I’ll bet alot of us are curious to know why you came to DK and such😊
Great content👍🏻
Velkommen til Danmark 😊 Nice vlog you got and funny I found your channel. I'm a Dane and have been living here All My life.
On a similar note, can you explain the difference between, doing taxes in the US and in Denmark.
We have the same in sweden, but its called BankID same in Norway. Makes life easy.
In norway we have something similar called BankID. 👍👍
Maybe something you missed. When my sister and brother came to visit me in Australia, they had a nemld card with 10 different codes on it, and they can only use each code once.
i remember when nemID was introduced. everyone HATED its guts lol but now it runs smoothly and its just... there.
I think you should probably mention the e-boks (e-box) public mail environment. Where all public mail can be sent in a secure email and also private actors like bank, insurance companies and so forth can communicate with you. The e-boks system can be seen as an extensions to the hole digital ecosystem of public IT.
Hello Again I wanted to tell you you can buy a key hanger nem idea its a lot easyer than the card
🇸🇪👍
Love you guys. Your videos rock 👍
