Ugly backpacks = laptops inside, better take it Fashion/well-designed/minimal backpacks = dont know, whatever could be inside, skip Point is, it is a stereotype that tech backpacks are ugly
I use an older heritage pack that I got for university 4 years ago. The laptop pocket is a bit big for my air but I just double up on the protection with one of the older sleeves they have as well and it does the trick!
I have a backpack from North Face. It was expensive (around $150) and is not very fashionable, but built like a tank. I've used it for school, for camping, for traveling, for grocery shopping, for everything. It's about as big as what is categorized as a "personal item" by airlines. 6 years of non-stop use and it still looks brand new.
I'm a computer tech student, my daily backpack is Burton Kilopack. Great backpack, i have it for about a year, it's very light, and gas enaugh space inside to carry all my books, and a computer with some accessories. It has a nice soft top pocket great for ur glasses or keys, two pockets on each side, for short bottle, a fruit or headphone if u will. Has two straps for skateboard, well i don't skate but it comes in handy when u need that extra space to carry ur jacket when ur bag is full. main compartment is spacious and features 15'6 inch laptop pocket, in specs it's 15 but my laptop is 15'6 and it fits just about, also the pocket is suspended so u don't break it when u throw it down. Overall it's a great bag worth looking into, as it actually have life time warranty.
I am using the herschel little america for 3 years and it's my best companion while traveling or in school. I carry a 15" laptop and a mirrorless camera with 3 prime lenses and it fits well :D
Heads up to anyone thinking of getting a messenger bag or any sling/single strap bag, all of the weight of what you carry will be put on one shoulder so they are not good for long/constant use. If you are going to use it for a couple of minutes at a time it will be ok, don't carry heavy stuff constantly.
MIND BLOWN. 5 minutes ago I was looking for a new backpack on Amazon and couldn't find anything. I thought maybe Dave Lee would have something, so I went onto UA-cam and bam, new video about backpacks for tech!!!!
I went through a whole backpack conundrum this summer as I looked for weeks for a good bag that I could rock for the next year or two.. I think its an understated problem that most functional bags look like shit or are way overpriced. Dave you should make a video on 5 solid backpacks for school/work that aren't just Herschel (which look nice but aren't really my style).
Timbuk2 is an awesome company for backpacks as well, they're based in San Francisco and have a ridiculous amount of customization options. Not cheap but they're great.
Boll Prophet 26L, i'm just note sure if it's sold outside Czech Republic. Nice, good quality, comfortable, it has like 15 pockets for everything: tablet, notebook, A4 papers, external hard drive, pens and there are smaller pockets inside or outside of larger pockets. It fits 15.6" notebook perfectly and only downsides are that it's not perfectly waterproof and it's not suitable for carrying bulky stuff - i mean it's not designed for hiking :).
I had the "pop quiz", got it in a store randomly on sale. Really liked it, until the main zipper broke. Only lasted 4 months. The bag is quality, apart from the zips which have plastic teeth. If you look on Amazon you'll find a lot of reviews showing broken zips.
I have 2 Aer fitpacks. Clean design, perfect size, almost water proof, ample storage, good padding, no overbearing logo, chest harness which I prefer for motorcycle riding.
Ayee Ive had the pop quiz for like 2 years now! It's awesome, the laptop sleeve is so nice I feel like a laptop would never get messed up in it (as long as you're not dirty and let dirt in your backpack) too bad I don't have a laptop 😖. Im trying to get the Lenovo 710s 😍 but the broke life is too strong. Noticed you were using it in the vid haha nice! Great vid man keep it up!
Okay, I'm hearing a lot of strong language with regard to tech backpacks. I'm a tech. I love my tech backpack. Sure it's big and severe looking, but so am I! We are matched well. So please, take it easy with the adjectives. Please.
I have a bag from STM. I love it because it also has a battery pack slot but additionally also openings so you can run cables through all compartments. Also place for a laptop, tablet and more. In my opinion it also looks good
I bought a oackley kitchen sink for a little bit more, way more storage, way more solid, with a solid pouch for sun glasses and quick access pouch for your tech
Ive had the pop quiz for a few years, ve aware the front pocket zipper (water resistant one, its usually white) WILL BREAK but, just use 2 zip ties and its all good once it the zipper track crumbles
Jansport Right Pack is the best bag. Not too big, not too small, has all the essentials and is really durable, with a lifetime warranty. Water resistant too
knomo backpacks are also great for women and men who have to carry laptops all the time. It's slim and its minimalist style is what makes it stylish and versatile but still provide utility with so many pockets and compartments inside!
I am using the little American for over a year now and I have to disagree about the complaints in the comments regarding the quality. It has held up well and I am still enjoying it everyday.
I tried the Herschel Heritage backpack for two years of my senior high school with the first year having no laptop and the final year having my laptop with me and it's pretty good on the shoulders because of the padding of the straps and it has big compartments as well. Dave2D did the best in choosing backpacks of his choice. 😁
Sorry but gotta strongly disagree with you on these backpack. They look cheap and low quality to me. And on top of everything, I don't think they look better than most of $80-120 backpack out there ;)
Huy Le Some people just have different senses of style. I personally have never owned any of these, but the brand is highly regarded, and they are definitely not low-quality. They are well designed for functionality as well as form, use good materials and have very good quality control. You can put your trust in this brand. If you don't like the look you can check out their other offerings or just get a completely different bag altogether. To each their own.
2018 version ? I like your taste in bags/backpacks. So many other youtubers recommend big bulky techy bags which are good for people who travel long distances but for everyday usage they're just too bulky and annoying to carry around. I am always trying to find simple, minimal backpacks that are also efficient and useful for everyday carry.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Jansport backpacks. They've got a series of backpacks with laptops in mind and they're great, plus they come with a bunch of colors.

Herschel backpacks are nice and stylish as you mention but have a look at Bellroy classic backpack which I finally decided to buy after some extended research: classic & stylish look, best quality and endurance, compact shape.
These are a very decent selection of bags yet they're a little bit too expensive for most people including myself, who need an affordable pack with more functionality. There's a bag/s called "zip pack go" which is a 3-in-1 modular type of bag from a company called Wool and Oak. I wouldn't know how well it can serve as a "tech bag", since there are little to no reviews of it online. Though I know this channel mostly caters to tech related content, I hope could look into it Dave, cause I think it's worth checking out.
There are so many better brands out there than boring old Hershel .. peak design , topo design , ynot , dsptch, wandrd, bellroy and timbuk2. @@colton6404 Take a look at Head Porter's lineup of bags, they have solid Japanese built quality and material. I ain't Japanese but I have to say Japanese products are really top-notch.

I love Hershel--I bought a couple from PacSun a couple years back and they've served me well. Another brand they carry is Burton (the current bag of my daily driver), and they make some good bags as well if you ever decide to do a follow-up video. Thanks for all you do Dave!
Been using some random Microsoft branded backpack since 2008. Forget fashion sense, this thing has gone everywhere with me and has 0 holes or no problems with zippers.
