I came here thinking Maki's fantasy is the sexual tension that comes from Shuichi being the only person she's fallen too much for to kill. Instead, Shuichi's basically filling the hole she had after losing her actual childhood friend, who indeed played House with Maki. Equal parts sad and heartwarming.

Year late but nope in DR IF it clearly states that Naegi already had feelings for Kirigiri. And somewhat vice-versa of course Kirigiri couldn't express her feeling because how she was raised. And she didn't express them until DR End of Hope Peak Arc where it heavily hint that both like each other well over the years.

This is one of my favorite Love Hotel events because it's surprisingly poignant. Even if Maki's resigned to being an assassin, you can tell that deep down, she wishes she didn't have to be one.

-except she was never an assassin to begin with-
not exactly true or false. Likely the case being is that it's a mix of both. Remember at the beginning Kaede says she plays Piano, but she's not good at it then becomes the ultimate pianist. Likely each character was kidnapped, but had their truths exaggerated. It also helps explain why certain people are able to be efficiency in their jobs compared to simple brainwashing, which can't really give you more knowledge/skill.

@@LOSTLEAD8R not really, Kaede says she has a skill she devotes to, but that isnt necessarily playing the piano, she never specified it. And also, in the begining Keebo is not a robot, meaning even If Kaede did in fact play the piano before coming to the academy, that doesnt mean the other ultimates had skills similar to their talents in the killing game, for some like Keebo and Kaito, 100% didnt have their skills before the killing game.

I find Maki’s love hotel moment to be the best because it connects with her free time events. She wants to protect and love her girlfriend forever. Maki’s the cutest. (Of course in this situation instead of the girlfriend it’s Shuichi)
According to the main story Momota was her first crush, and she hadn't been together with her childhood friend for 'over ten years'. I doubt this was trying to reference her FTEs.
She literally refers to her friend talking about starting a real family. It's very obvious that Maki is thinking about her friend in this fantasy of hers. It also makes sense that she really wouldn't be sexual because a lot of her growth socially and what not are stunted, and she just wants what a lot of people consider a normal life.

The way I see it, Harukawa staying in the orphanage in her fantasy is telling on how she wished she never became an assassin. That's probably why Saihara plays the role of an orphanage friend, because Harukawa links the orphanage with the happy and normal moments of her life, before she came to hate herself.
Sounded like she had a childhood friend fetish, but it turned into something more. She just wanted to connect and have friends and family, people that could see past her assassin skills. The childhood friend fetish might be indirect or a projection of something subconscious. Or it's all bullshit, who knows.

I love how Kaito and Shuichi are so different but their contrasts compliment each other but also give Maki what she needs. Kaito is wild, he's flashy and loud but he'll sweep you off your feet and never get tired of making people happy. He's the kind of guy you have to keep up with because he's going and going and nothing can stop rocket man! Meanwhile, Shuichi is careful, his thoughts run a mile a minute but he's brilliant and easy to get along with. He'll stay by your side but knows when to give you space. He'll match your stride so it makes you want to do your best just to see him do his too.
Being around Kaito is easy and although he gets annoying sometimes, he's definitely the kind of guy teenagers would have crushes on. Probably the kind of guy who'd get into a fight with someone one day and then be best friends with said person the next day. Kaito gives a thrilling kind of love story.
Shuichi on the other hand makes you want to push him forward. When you need him, he's always there and he's thoughtful in every way. He hides away though, as best as he can and it's frustrating to watch. So when he gets more comfortable and opens up, you never thought you could feel so at home with just a person's presence. Shuichi gives a childhood friend kind of love story.
I love how shuichi accepts everyone's feelings towards him, it's like he's used to it or something-

I lowkey ship them too (and I ship kaimaki as well haha) I don't ship em' in the time period of the killing game though, just after. I'd like to think of them as a dynamic duo, him being a detective and her being an assasin, imagine those two partnering in work! It sounds so badass to me, and I can definitely see them together IF you give it some time post-game. Like "from work partners to actual partners." kind of thing, although I don't see Maki staying as an assasin forever, maybe it could shift to something more "calm" (compared with her past job anyways) like a bodyguard, I think it could fit wonderfully with the child caregiver thematic, she's kind of a bodyguard to them in a way. It would be adorable if she decided to do the same for Shuichi and his work by her own free will.
