I'm really not a patriotic person, but the first few articles of our constitution are giving me a reason to like germany, despite it's faults. It's not just the first one, even though the first article is great.
The second one gives us the right to express ourselves and to not be harmed.
The third one is that everyone is equal.
4 is freedom of religion and 5 is freedom of speech
14 guarantees the right to own property but is saying at the same time, that property has to service all of society.
17 is the right to complain (very important for germans)

I've never once worried about the end of the world. There is more than enough interesting stuff on offer today.
Also as to humanity being the apocalypse to other species; look back through time, we're not the first species to alter the conditions for life on the planet. We probably won't be the last. To Earth we're not much more than a fungal infection, much like any species. The next big space rock will scrub us off the planet like a dose of Terbinafine.

However, when you look for a quote from him about dignity, you quickly realize that he didn't talk much about "dignity". Instead, he showed us what it meant.
*_"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has- or ever will have- something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression."_* - Fred Rogers

Next week I suppose you’ll be telling me some other nonsense like “Henry is driving” to make me feel even older than I already do.
John’s participation in this assignment was also my first Chris Waters sighting. It’s a rare gem.

I think that comment sums up almost exactly how I feel about vlogbrothers. Not just vlogbrothers either, but all of your writing, John. Ever since I was a child, I have engaged through the world with language. In that time, I have particularly enjoyed engaging with the world through the way you personally, as a gifted writer, contruct language. The way you write, from the equally lyrical and heartfelt words of the Anthropocene Reviewed, to describing yourself as a “paramecium of worry”, to describing anxious thoughts as a “thought spiral” - they give me a new perspective and new language to how I see the world in a way that yes, “does not shirk from problems or challenges, but never ridicules or degrades others” but also in a way that is profoundly hopeful. Your writing helps me to truly look at the world and its faults and believe, in spite of it all, that this game is still winnable. (Another one of your fabulous quotes). So, thank you John. I feel like I never comment early enough for you guys to actually see my comments (due to timezone differences) but in case you do, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for sharing your mastery of language to help me look, and see, and understand and hope.

it's interesting. "I think, therefore I am" is really pointing out mind-identification. Us identifying with thoughts. That's so much of what we do, identifying with thoughts,, but even deeper than that is "I know that I am." The Universe made a tool with which to know itself.

Then I watch John's videos, and they remind me that the humanity and the common experiences that we share and the depth of kindness shared and experienced by so many is a greater bonding force that can ever be torn asunder. What an honor to be able to be conscious of the human dignity of others, to be alive to experience this connection.

You know, this video and a few others on your guys’ channel (along with some art assignment vids: shout out to Sarah, I am counting down the days to your book launch!) have inspired me to actually actively start writing again.
I’m currently working on a project (possibly a comic first, and a novel later) about a group of teenagers who are given superpowers against their will, and subsequently fail to cope with their new lack of actual functioning humanity. More importantly: I’m basing the entire thing on inspiration I received from The Mountain Goats songs! If there’s any specific lines you’d care to point out to me to reference or brainstorm about, please do so.

I am in college right now. My degree is… different in that we are focussed on User experience/interaction but my other major is English. I feel like this puts me in an interesting spot… because I have such a different perspective on what art is, and what could be considered art.
Last Fall I took a class about Called Digital Literature and New Media. It was essentially 13 weeks of Video games as a narrative artistic tool. I took it because it fulfilled one of my “senior” English electives but it also intrigued me. Playing video games for research: I’m in.
I thought the class was super interesting, and it allowed me to express opinions about things that normally in academia I don’t get to. In my papers I got super into the more technical sides of things while still trying to cover the nuance that comes with thinking critically about narrative. My friend who took the class with me constantly questioned why I was getting better marks then her “You are a science major> im actually an English major” ect. A large portion of the class was exactly if a video game was art? And I think a good majority of my class was like its not…
I digress. 100% human dignity in ourselves and others. YES. and that is an absoultely wonderful comment.
