2023 GNCC Mountaineer Rd.10 Beckley, WV 5th Masters A 50+ 1 lap. Problems from the start.

- This is the first time I've been to this event as well. This place is located on the national boy scout campground - which is a freaking amazing place.
The weather was great leading up to the event....until during the night before the race - which it dumped buckets.
When I went to jump on the bike to head up to the starting line my battery stopped working. I was able to get it bump started and got to the starting line. I was hoping it would charge in that time and be ok to start... but then it didn't start when the flag dropped.
Luckily a spectator/ race fan helped me get to a hill where I bumped it to get going and start the race a couple of rows late.
With the nerves of the battery not working I didn't get the camera started until I got going.
I really liked the course once on it. I would have loved it in the dry ! In between some super fast fire roads it was very rocky and rooty and technical.
I had a couple of get-offs but managed to keep the engine running. And, although I figured that the battery would charge as I was riding - it DID NOT !
I found this out the hard way toward the end of the first lap - way in the bottom of the course when I hit a deep rut that threw me off the bike. After a couple of attempts I wasn't able to get going again. I was able to back the bike up a little mound and with the help of another fan(Dan), I got it going to complete a lap.
Since the battery was truly toast, I wasn't going to try another lap and end up getting down in a worse spot that I couldn't get going from. So I took the lap and threw in the towel.
Mainly because of others DNF's, this was my best GNCC finish since starting to do some of them.
At least the video gives a good idea of the course. I am very much looking forward to riding it again next year. Hopefully in better conditions.

Hahaha. Thanks. I was doing this race more for fun than anything - so I wasn't taking it too serious. ...Probably why I was talking more than usual. Glad you enjoy it !

Sucks about your battery. And I agree, it would have been a great track without the rain. I feel this track was much tougher than Snowshoe!
Did you race this one ? I tried to mention that in the video - that's it's more mountainous than anywhere I've been - including Snowshoe. With the exception of a couple of fast fire roads, this whole course is like a couple tough sections of Snowshoe. Racer TV doesn't show it, but in the PM race they added a hard enduro type rock garden that was super gnarly.
@@philipcaudill626 yes, the 50+C. Did three laps, the 3rd lap, got buried in a mud hole. Dropped back to 3rd and finished in 2hr 58 min..
@@brainy141 That's a long race! Congrats on finishing - and getting three laps! I wish I could've gotten more. The first lap was better than I expected given the rain. I saw lap times went up quite a bit for the additional laps. So, I figured it must've gotten a lot nastier in places.
Where is your camera mounted are they letting you run it on your helmet again?
I missed this round the year I did the GNCC series wish I wouldn't have track looks like a blast I do better in the rocky tough races then the open ones lol good riding man I enjoy your videos.
No- they didn't change their rule back yet. I like the technical sections as well. I do better vs. some of the others at the GNCC races that are rocky and better at my regional races that are faster.
