DUST OUT ! GAS IT Anyway! AWRCS Woods Racing rd. 6 Powerline Park St. Clairsville, OH 50+ A P2
Finally - a dry AWRCS race ! Dry is an understatement though. Just GAS IT - I'm sure the track is right in front of me ! Right ?
It was 95 degrees and super dry and dusty. Watching the video, somehow, it looks better than it did in person, at speed. There was many times a lap that you didn't really know what you were heading into. You really had to take the opportunity to get on the gas when you could see far enough in front of you. Three different times I realized I was off course (because of no dust immediately in front of me, lol) and had to turn around to find where someone had gone through and taken out ribbons in error. (Those wrong direction riding / short-cut taking could have been why it took over 45 minutes after the protest period to finalize results.) Still- I liked the course so much better than the GNCC I raced here earlier this year in the mud and slop. Because I got all the laps of the race leaders, my race time ended up being 2 hrs: 48 mins. It was grueling. Props to all those who able to hang in there for 4 laps on this day. And special congrats to John K. (#645) who took the lead from our row, in the 60+ Class!, went back and forth with me several times during the race, finishing just ahead of me at the end, and winning his class. I believe he let me by at 34:25 because he wasn't sure where the course went. I picked the wrong direction right after that ! And BOY - nothing scarier than going up a trail that you think / fear that others will be coming at you !
I did get some rear-view camera action at the start - until I knocked it out of view on the creek jump attempt (and my front camera for a bit as well). After that, I did miss the tricky hill climb, but got it the next two laps. Then, at about 11:40, when we got into a nice new section of single track I took a hard hit to the ribs from my handlebar trying to save a crash. Luckily, I just got the wind knocked out me and bruised up - and didn't break a rib. About 16:57 I thought I busted the tire off my rim. Luckily I didn't - but did find a huge dent in my rim after the race. I did get my camera angle fixed about 22:00.
I did say during the video that someone won an award for the most turns on a race course. If someone counts direction changes on this video of the first lap let me know. My guess is 326 on this 13 miles course(from start to 44:45). It could seem that there were more than normal because, of the dust, you could only gas and go for one little straight stretch at a time. I'll count myself and send out a give-away prize to whoever's count (submitted by 7/31/24) is closest to my count.
The 24 hour Challenge is next weekend. I'm running it solo this year. So, this was a good precursor in case it is a dry one again this year too. But I have some race prep to do this week for that one.
Please give a thumbs-up and consider hitting that subscribe button if you like what you see / hear.
If you don't - and feel like hitting the thumbs-down - how about leaving me some criticisms / feedback in the comments below instead ?? I can't fix it if you don't tell me. I can take it. hahaha
Drop a message if you see yourself. And Thanks for watching.
See you at the next one.

Disaster on 1st Lap - AGAIN ! AWRCS rd. 5 Reynlow Riders Reynoldsville, PA 50+ A

Well, due to a heavy downpour an hour before the race, we have yet another sloppy, mess of a race. I got a real good start and then found myself struggling on a hill with another rider in the way of getting unstuck. If I hadn't come around 3rd he first lap I may not have continued. So, other than a few seconds after my first crash, I had a lot of rear-view camera to show. And so there is a lot ...

I was a little delirious at the end of this one - but this is in fact 2024 - Not 2022 as I say in my opening bit. I'll let you know up front that a lot of this video is me struggling to actually get back in the race. I was really looking forward to this technical race - and in that respect it did not disappoint. The first time I did this race was 2023. It was super wet, muddy, and a completely ...

What a wonderful Fathers Day. Beautiful weather and racing bikes ! We had a healthy line with 16 of us taking off together. I like the way NYOA does their bike numbers - as our line was all 700's or a day-rider with a '7X1' like myself, or '7X3' like my buddy. It makes it a little easier knowing who you're racing with. ...that is if the numbers are accurate and/or stickers they give you are put...

Wow, what a tough course ! Definitely not my type of conditions. I mean, the layout was awesome - but when you take what would be a faster, flowing course and put 6 inches of super slippery mud on top and develop foot deep ruts, full of roots, everywhere - it changes it all. Before the nitty gritty of the race though, I'd like to take a moment and say something about 3 young men who lost their ...

I believe I met the most forgiving, chillest, and nicest racer ever that got taken out by someone. That racer was number 702. I was the one that took him out. I believe my bars or arm swept the bar right out of his hands, while my rear end sna...

This is a long video mainly because the course was about 14.5 miles and took over 40 minutes for a lap, and then I put in a little bit of the last lap when I started to get the hang of the track and conditions (SAND) when trying to make a couple of last lap passes. Hard enduro GNCC edition! Sometimes it's easier to go all the way down the hill once you fall, but that can be scary at a place like Snowshoe! In addition to the suspension thing below you might check out some of Moto Academy's body position videos. Chest mounts can be deceiving but it seems like you're kind of riding behind the bars with your hands rather than diamond grip / head over number plate. When you ride that extra few inches ahead, when the bike goes sideways like this, you have the positioning to wrangle it back instead of going along for the ride. Plus have more angular momentum in the first place so less likely to get kicked sideways.

Oh man, I did something similar in a local hare scramble last month. First lap. Got a great start. We all hit the first steep hill and I charge up the first line to make some passes. Halfway up I hit a branch and went sideways. Had to turn quick and run back to the bottom to make another run. Collided with another rider at the base and went off into a deep ditch. It took everything I had to get the bike out and I realized my race was done. At 65 and just getting over some injuries it just made me feel old.

@@philipcaudill626 This is one of my strengths. While I don't run, GNCC, I run same class as you, have multiple championships. You can clearly tell your suspension threw you sideways 100%. It was not you! To combat this I suggest 2 things. 1) Go in a 3 clicks on front and rear rebound. Keep in mind that any time you stiffen rebound, it effects compression, so when going in a few rebound clicks you may have to go out 1-2 compression clicks to regain compliance. Also, on the rear, don't worry about low speed compression as much, it only effects compression on BIG hard landings like jumps. The high speed adjuster is where its at for offroad. To calm down high speed rear end kick back, go OUT 2 clicks on your high speed. Without knowing your weight, bike and springs, this is a good place to start. Try it this weekend and let me know how you make out. Also, I see you run a late model KTM 2 stroke, you want that rear sag around 108 (yes 108). Get some of the weight off the forks and onto the rear shock and let the shock start doing most of the work (as it should).

@@95jersey Wow. Thanks for the suggestions. I have nothing to lose by giving some things a try. I actually softened it a little for my last race and left it soft for this one because of the rocks and sharp edges I'd be seeing. My biggest problem is that I'm racing on weekends and don't have a good place, or time otherwise, to do some serious testing. Thanks again.

@@joshconner1078 Thank You!! Based on the track improving a little over our race - or maybe just getting used to it - you hopefully had a better track than our first lap. It didn't seam like there was any run-up to the big hill climb, and everyone was waving us around - so I figured there were more guys getting stuck and blocking the lines than were making it up clean.

For sure, but yea our track was pretty tacky for the most part but the hill was still tough had about 10 feet and a 90 degree turn for a run up hahah it only seemed a few seconds slower to go around it

What settings are you running in your gopro? I just started putting one on my son in youth but can't seem to find settings that don't take forever to upload, but look good as well? Thanks

Hi. For the basics, I'm running 4K, 60 frames, HyperView, max stability. It does take quite a long time to process and also upload. I usually merge the videos overnight and then its 3-5 hours upploading the 4k to youtube - depending on the video length.

Yeah- I haven't for so long, so hopefully I can go as fast as I'd like to without worrying so much about tucking it or not staying on line. Once I get the rear adjusted now to keep up with the front I'll be able to get on the gas sooner with more confidence as well.

Thanks a lot. It was actually a lot better this race. lol I've been lowering the fork air pressure, below the recommendations, more and more and that seems to help. For here, I probably should have taken a click or two out of the compression - huh ?

@@philipcaudill626 ah air forks, there lies your main problem. Get the 6500 spring conversion ASAP or you will be forever struggling. If you still want to run air, I'd recommend no higher than 130 PSI even on fast stuff. Fellow A Sup Senior rider here. Your just way to stiff here. hope it helps next race.

Nice ride, that course looked awesome, I really appreciate your description, gives a great overall perspective of the race and how you finished. You also dispelled an assumption I have been under for a long time; even A riders take a bad line and dirt samples on occasion. We have our first race in Iowa this weekend, can’t wait, first race in the 50+ C class. At least this year I am not the oldest one in the class this year! Thanks for the video and making us old guys look so good, good luck at the next race!

Thanks a lot. I'm working on adding some commentating during the video editing also. I tried it on this one but the audio levels were bad so I had to scrap it. Oh, I take more than my share of dirt samples. haha Most of the time it's because I'm riding over my head and experience. I have gotten better at pacing myself a little better, and not going all out the first lap, so I'm not so exhausted half way through the race. Good luck in your race ! Maybe we'll run into each other if you go to one of the GNCC races out your way in TN or IN, which I plan to hit.

Awesome job! I watched the crash video as well.. took a pretty hard hit. Watch 29:22 to the end to see how much smoother your corner exits are. Also, I think it’s great you recording your races! Go back through and look at how many straighter paths you could have taken or carried momentum better in certain sections. Could shave minutes off your time instead of seconds. Anyway, I’m subscribed! 💪👍 keep em coming
