Previously, during the republic government, the Panjshir Valley was completely dominated by the Panjshiri people, not the Taliban. The Panjshir Valley is also known as a place for mining gems. For the past 20 years, the Panjshir locals have been involved in smuggling the vast majority of the gems. Even government officials were not allowed to enter the Panjshir Valley, as the entire area was surrounded by the locals. The Panjshiri people were considered by the Afghan people to be among the worst tribes in Afghanistan, being involved in various types of crimes, with 95% of those involved originating from Panjshir.
The documentary kinda forgot the beginning questions, as well as failing to really contextualize the Taliban as an organization. I might have missed it but I didn't really hear any reason why rocks became more precious than human life, or why people in one of the most resource-rich countries in the world still struggling with poverty. it seems to me, by adding the context of who funded the Taliban as the mujahadeen in 1990 because they fought against the soviets. With this and other geopolitical considerations it would give important context to these individual stories that people are climbing into deadly mines, walking around with massive cameras worth just as much as any gemstone in a country where getting murdered for a gemstore isn't out of the question, and so on. Without talking about the imperialist politics, the conscious underdevelopment and destabilization that countries like the united states have put onto Afghanistan this work fails to explain the questions that it itself provides.

Uhh, dynamite is literally for blasting holes in dirt and rock for easy excavation, hardly a weapon of war
Yeah, that's quite literally the EXACT thing it was meant to be used for. Most militaries abandoned it by the 1900s, they all switched to TNT (which is still the most common/deadly weapon of war even in 2023). Alfred Nobel, the creator of dynamite, later created the Nobel Peace Prize because he was disgusted by his invention being turned into a deadly weapon.
Instead of saying "these folks are using a weapon of war to mine gems" it's probably more accurate to say "Fighters are misusing a mining tool as a weapon"
Not if you fill a pressure cooker with it!
@@dark2023-1lovesoni Or they are just calling it dynamite even if it isn't.

....most stones from Afghanistan get bought via buyers in Pakistan, where they are then traded on the open market, and a lot of times then bought by large buyers in Bangkok. Most tourmaline coming from Afghanistan is a seafoam green color, and is more prone to fracturing when cutting/faceting than other tourmaline varieties. Afghanistan produces a nice amount of emerald too, SWAT mine in Pakistan/Afghanistan put out a lot of material.
It's nice to hear that Pakistan is atleast helping the miners in order to sell the stones. I just hope it doesn't get invaded again, decades of war keep the country from improving at all
Good knowledge, Kevin. All tourmalines will fracture (or craze) if cut the wrong way. Best way to avoid fracturing during the cutting process is to use hot water. Oil will also prevent fracturing during cutting. I have been working in Afghan tourmaline and other gems for twenty years and I think they are the finest in the world, way better than African material. I'm sure I met Habibullah in the past.

This channel is now starting to become like vice from 10 years ago, and I like it, I like it a lot.
