FAQ
1) How much did this cost to build?
*****Total, i would say we put close to 1000 into the coop, but that includes things like the watering buckets, PVC pipe, and the feed dispenser. Construction stuff has gotten so expensive! Part of the issue was the size i chose for the coop (5 X 6) which meant a significant amount of waste (plywood sheets are 4X8. If you would do a 4X4 coop, you could probably cut that number in half. Get your hinges at harbor freight and see if you can find a cheap window at a shed supply place. Also, the black wire i used for the run was quite a bit more than economy stuff but i liked it more.
2) Would I change anything about the way this was built?
***** In hindsight, yes, I would. a) After I created this video I had to relocate the water bucket because the chickens got too tall to use it. If the coop had been 2 or 3 inches higher off the ground it woulda worked out okay. b) Also, I am 6'5" tall, and I wish the run were at least that tall. It makes for some back breaking work to walk around in there as it is now. c) I know many people say ya don't need to heat a coop, but this one is very big for the number of birds that I have so their body heat alone is not able to keep it warm on these cold nights. (I'd add more chickens but the run is the right size for this number of birds). All that to say, I wish I had done one of two things...insulated the coop with some foam or designed it so that I could put a temporary winter wall in the inside (reducing the size of their sleeping area and making it easier for them to keep it warmer with their body heat alone). Did that make any sense??
3) Why the sand?
*****I realize sand isn't as nice for the chickens as grass, but the grass was gone about two days after putting the chickens in the run...and then I had mud (which, in this part of Pennsylvania is slow draining). I felt like like sand would at least cut down on the mud and help keep their feet a little dryer. The sand is probably 2 or 3 inches deep, and they seem to churn it up enough that smell hasn't been a real issue. I did dig out and replace all the sand once in the last 8 months.
4) Do I have blueprints of what I did here?
*****No, I kinda had a vague idea of what I wanted to do and made it up as I went. But enough people have asked me for them that I am trying to get those together for you all by spring. Subscribe and stay tuned and you will be the first to see them when they are done!
5) How many eggs do you get?
*****These are golden comet chickens, and I am blown away by the number of eggs they have been producing. I have 7 chickens and I very rarely have a day when we don't get 7 eggs. I expect that they have got to slow down for the winter (I live in Pennsylvania), but I've been saying that for a number of weeks now!? It's now January 7th.
6) How easy is it to care for chickens?
***In the spring, summer, and fall caring for the chickens was a lot easier than I expected it would be. In the winter there is an added challenge if you live somewhere its cold, because you gotta make sure the water doesn't freeze. I have my hose put away for the winter so i gotta walk the water out there.
I now have bins under the roosts where I collect their droppings and that cuts down on how often I need to clean out all the bedding. You'll probably want to empty those bins once a week and clean out the whole coop once a month or so. Other than that, collect the eggs, give them food and fresh water. With this setup, and an additional water bucket I can go away for 5 days at a time without worrying too much about them. I just arrange for neighbors to pick up the eggs (which they don't seem to mind if it means free eggs)
If you start trying to pack too many birds into a small coop/ run, that's where you might run into more problems with the birds not getting along well. This could mean isolating birds and treating sores; I avoided all that by giving them plenty of space.

Plywood that’s rated for ground contact / exterior use. The thickness you need will depend on the spacing of your framing.

Nice looking coop! Going to copy it with a little larger dimensions. All good ideas for watering, feeding and cleaning. Hopefully you're composting the clean out debris, your garden will benefit greatly.
Yes, a light to heat the box for winter is a good idea, maybe a flap,over the vents too to hold in the heat a bit on windy winter nights.

This looks awesome. The only thing I’d change is the roost to a 2 x 4, it’s better for their feet to sit flat and also for colder climates, allows them to completely cover their feet with their feathers when they roost to help prevent frostbite.

I heard the opposite. Chickens aren’t naturally flat footed and prefer to roost in trees so you want to use exactly what he has in this video 🤷🏻♀️

Nice job!!! One suggestion... I had the same kind of floor in mine so I could just sweep everything out but... you know chickens. They kick stuff. Every time I opened the door I got a load of "stuff" that fell on my shoes. What I did was put a 1x6 removable board across the entrance. Made all the difference in the world.

They actually prefer 2X4’s because they can sit on their feet and keep them warm in the winter. They don’t need light at night because it will interrupt their laying cycle. Nice coop, great job on it. Thanks for showing it.

@@winniecash1654 my dad used 2x2s. Some spaced 4 to 6 inches apart going up with a slight slant like theater seating. Each chicken could roost wherever. They would have there feet on 1 board and kind of sit down and back basically using 2 boards. Other areas about 8-10 inches apart and those would have their tail hanging down between boards. 3 of the hens never really roosted. They slept in the laying box all the time on hay. It took many years for the board warp to be a problem. I think the chickens had different preferences because they weren't all the same breed. There were 10-30 at any given time. The coop was 10x16. They were let out to graze everyday. This guys watering system is good to stay clean and easy. We had a baby pool in the yard with about 3 inches of water they would get in and drink and bathe. Cute but a huge pain. It was a mess to keep clean and change.

Love the coop..you are quite the carpenter. We are still trying to find the right design. My first criteria was actually what you implemented..the front door opening so that you can clean it easily. I thought about the door flipping down..but I like yours better! And great idea for the nesting boxes!! You are funny with how particular you are. You did a awesome job...so perfectly built! As far as the led's..do they really need light? I never heard of chickens needing light at night to see...so this is a new concept for me! Thanks ..and it is amazing how popular your video is even after 2 years!! yipeee
Very nice job. How about a small solar panel to keep the battery charged. After watching this I have to build one now and I don't even have any chickens! but I do love eggs......
Cliff Andrews Some others have made that suggestion. A solar panel would work...I happened to have a trickle charger already (and do not own any solar panels)
Starry Hilder I don't think they NEED light, but I think I have read that if a possum, raccoon, skunk, fox..etc got into the coop, giving the chickens some light gives them a fighting chance. I am not sure. If nothing else, it's convenient for me too, because I can look in and count them at night.

The linoleum trick was really cool! We use them for our cabinets inside our kitchen at our house as well as closets so you don't have to look at just a painted piece of wood. But I never thought about using it in a chicken coop for cleanliness. I will definitely be doing that with mine

oh i love these ideas! we are in the process of adding boredom busters and a more free range like run (rotation grass, veggie plants, sandbox). i was trying to figure out how to incorporate the waterer and feeder. i didnt even think of doing it like you have. thats awesome. we used to use branches for roost too, but we had a problem with bumblefoot starting to show. now just flat 2x4s. ;) we use a solar rope light from harbor freight in ours. great video! beautiful coop!

On my coop, I use hay for bedding. Every so often, I rake it up and put it in my garden for mulch. Plus the chicken crap makes good fertilizer. I also have 9 hens. With the cost of feed, if I can break even on eggs, I'm happy. It's more of a knowing where your food comes from thing for me. I let them out in the yard to eat before dark for a few minutes. They will go back in the pen on their own at dark thirty. Plus I feed them garden waste. They like anything green. Good luck all.

It looks nice and clean. I live in a rural forest, so I use the same wire on the outside as you, but on the inside of the 2x4, I also use 1/2" square hardware cloth. I have caught five different rat snakes over 5' long, stealing my eggs or killing my chickens. You inspired me to rebuild some of my earlier versions of coops!

Nice video and coop. On the farm in the 50's and 60's we always called your hardware cloth 'Ratwire' to keep the rats and mice out of the corn. That's a good idea about the rocks around the bottom to keep the predators out.
This is awesome - thanks so much for posting! My chicks will be 8 weeks old in just a few days & will be ready to go out to the coop. We bought ours at a farm supply store & I know it's too small, so we really need improvement ideas.

This is amazing! Thanks for sharing this. All the pre-made coops I've found make no sense when it comes to cleaning and getting in the coop. I made the mistake of buying a cute and EXPENSIVE coop that totally lacks functionality.

Id believe you went wrong with the "night light" and heating you mentioned in the winter time. especially if you plan to heat them with IC light. they dont need the heating and light will mess with their moult (and health). Dont even close the ventilation during the winter as it could lead to respiratory and other health problem. hello from Serbia to all the chicken lovers.
He should have it on wheels so he could move it around for them to have green grass.
Haven't watched any update videos yet, but you really should get a small solar panel to charge that battery. You could also do an automatic door on a timer, but that's a bit more complicated.

I have thought about the automatic door option, but I worry about "locking a chicken out"...especially over the winter; occasionally, a chicken gets distracted and doesn't make it back in the coop by dark. One of the nicest coops I've seen!
The large rocks is clutch! That is a great way for me to keep my dogs from trying to dig in. I will use those gardening blocks, two high. I would have never thought of that without seeing your rocks, thanks!

Love your set up. We think a lot alike. Easily keeping the coop clean were exactly my thoughts, too and keeping them warm enough away from wind and dampness in the frigid Wisconsin weather was another of my main thoughts.
Make it easer on yourself and do less bending over with a bad back. Fantastic!

how did you make a chicken coop like that
Chicken-majal. I had one very similar a few years ago. With regard to the water, it needs to be cleaned everytime you fill, not just refilled. The water will harbor bacteria, especially in the warmer months, and needs to be scrubbed with a mild soap and water.

I heard you can add apple cider vinegar to it to keep the bacteria out. I have not looked that up to verify, but I plan on it.
Hospitals even harbor bacteria, that can no longer be killed due to resistance. I wouldn't overthink life, it will end in its own good time.

Very nice, one of the best I've ever seen, very very nice job... Two things though: you should replace your fence with a smaller one, that's an easy fix and you will never get any weasel/marten go thru and kill everyone. Second, the inside is very nice but lots of gaps everywhere between the wood, which is paradise for bugs like lice... You can end up with thousands of lice during hot summers and you won't even notice. the more gaps, the harder it is to get rid of them... It's a nightmare ! You should try to fill them with silicone.

u should get a small solar panel and have that linked into the led system, save u from charging every so often. part from that, some really good ideas there, thanks!
Or a couple of those solar garden lights, just extending the cord to the LED and placing the LED inside, and the rest on the roof. That's gotta be the simplest solution.
As then they will only shine at night as well. So pretty convenient.

It's a great chicken coop but there's one thing about the nesting boxes I think I'll share. I've heard in lots of places that if your door to the nesting boxes is at the top, it freaks the chickens out when you open it as they think it's an aerial predator. But if you have a door on the side, like the Carolina Coops nesting boxes for example, your chickens are way more calm if they see you open it. Enjoy the 7-year late advice :)
