The good thing about these LGA 775, is that you "practically" can get these for free (or for peanuts). Here is a 70$ quality tower that played Fortnite at medium totally playable. A Budget build I did for a 10 year old kid. I agree Sandy bridge are way better for modern use, but can't compete with that price you can snatch the good old LGA 775 for :)
When you can use an Pentium 4 540J and PCX5750 on the same motherboard you run a Xeon E5450 and GTX 970, its probably *the* perfect platform for retro gaming. Especially since some motherboards have a FDD connector due to the demand from those still using Windows XP.

Came here to suggest the same idea! Currently running an OEM MSI 7225 mobo that I 771/775 modded with a Xeon X5460. Ram is my biggest ball and chain. Only allows for 4gb of 800 MHZ of DDR2. GPU is XFX Radeon HD 7850 2gb. It’s not incredible. However, it is solid enough. Currently have a XFX RX 470 XXX dual fan 4gb gpu on the way. That is the start of my next eventual build. I’ll always respect the LGA 775 layout. It’s what got me here.

I personally would recommend something used on the X58 platform. 6-Core 12-threaded Xeons perform much better and can be found in old Dell Precision T7500 workstations

It's good for a present though. I'm looking at getting my 5 year old sister a computer for Christmas so she can play Minecraft on, so a computer like this would be great.
Why though? I can just buy a similar computer to this as it clearly runs Minecraft decently. I'll probably get a better 775 CPU and more RAM, and I also have a spare 750ti lying around too.
I got core i3 2100, 6gb ddr3, gt 1030 2gb, runs fantastic! I can run games like gta v on high settings and battlefield 1 at low, and a lot of other good games it costed me only 90€! And delivered the pc to my home free!
@@GeorgeWilkins there are games that do not need a better PC. In fact they run better on slower PCs. I remember firing up Xroach on a Pentium and the danged bugs just looked like blurs on my screen. There was no way I was going to be able to squash one. I couldn't even see them!
@@cash8068 if I had a 1050ti I'd slap it into this PC which only has a 750ti in it at the moment. Replacing that is far down on the upgrade list though. I think I'd rather a RX570 for the price too.
2 years ago, 775 was killer value since Sandy Bridge i5 and i7 chips were still around the $100 or Euro mark and up, nowadays, boards are like 30-40 and so are the i5s, which smoke any Core 2 any day. Heck, even 1156 Xeons have more value these days.
I clicked the shortcut tab to UA-cam instead of Netflix and was like crap wrong one and was about to hit the back button but saw you uploaded a video in my recommended and was like never mind I'm watching UA-cam now
That's where you upgrade to something from the Q8*** or Q9***, they are around 15% faster at the same clock speeds with far lower power consumption. And they generally run well with the FSB at 400MHz.
If you can do it for super cheap, YEAHHH!! Last year I scored a 775 dell for 8 bucks which had the motherboard, 4GB of DDR2, q6600, good enough case, etc. All I did was throw a cheapo PSU in I had on hand and I bought a 560ti for 30$ and it's a monster at 38$. If you wanna count the PSU in the cost (which is fair), it's from another tower I got for 8 so the adjusted price would be 46$. Now not everyone'll be lucky enough to have ways of getting stuff that cheap, but man if you can... Anyways, nice video!
I'm shocked, my shotty laptop which cost like 700$ can hardly run a game. I should probably format the poor thing. You sir, are a hero, because I can finally know what to expect from even the simplest machines.
When I first watched it four years go I was going to do my own 775 build, I instead did a Ryzen 5 build cause I needed the extra cores. Since I'm going to start teaching my nephew, this video was the first thing that came to mind & thought I'd re watch it. The specs of his pc are Core 2 Quad Q9450 ($10), a 512gb ssd I found in the trash (it works perfectly), EVGA 450w psu already had, 8gb ddr3 ram which I already had also along with a gt 730.
even if these PCs arent going to be good for modern gaming, soon they will be retro PCs, which i would happily install XP on and run older games like a breeze, also, it would be nice to see a cinebench score on both these parts or for future builds, as it helps compare them to other options etc, if its not too time consuming!
Yeah the Core 2 era is a nice ground for old legacy Windows XP builds - the Core i series can be done but may have issues (my old school downgraded 1st gen i3 Windows 7 laptops once to XP, so it fitted in with the rest of their system - goodness knows how they found suitable drivers!) and earlier than Core 2, you could have issues with performance, as you're then going into the era of single core processors. The Fujitsu Lifebook E8020 laptop that I had, had a Pentium M 760 (I think) in it, which was only single core, and ran The Sims quite badly.
I got a sff OEM Lenovo 775 based PC from my work for free because it just wasn't handling the tasks it needed to. So when my boss upgraded he let me have it. It had a Pentium dual core in it and 2 sticks of mismatched ddr3 ram one was 4gb 1600mhz and the other 2gb 1333mhz.(thanks to our IT Dept.) I bought a modded Xeon x5450 from AliExpress and threw in another 4gb ddr3 1333mhz along with a hd7570 1gb gddr5 and now my 4 yr old son plays ROMs on it.
I put together an office PC for my mom with old parts i had flying around. An Core2 E5200, 8GB Ram and bought a used GT 710 and put in an old SSD i had lying around. Runs fine on Windows 10, fast enough for Browsing and Office use.
Only lighter esports titles. Modern AAA titles shit on that CPU. Any GPU above a 750ti/GT 1030/RX 550 will be bottlenecked by even some of the fastest Core 2 Quads. You might be able to eek out Max performance from 1050/RX 560/HD7950 type cards with something like a QX9775 overclocked to hell and back.
@@honkhonkler7732 the fastest core 2 quad gets up to 5000 in geekbench compared to the fastest c2d at 3100 that's ridiculous consider a i3, 2120 scores 6500+ how does the c2q bottleneck over a 750 ti
For around the same price point I personally got: A Dell Optiplex 790 for $15 which had ~ i5-2400 (LGA 1155 @ 3.4ghz; Quad-core) ~ 8gb DDR3 (1x4gb & 2x2gb 1333hz DDR3) ~ 1tb HDD (2 500gb HDDs, not raided sadly) ~ And an ATI RADEON HD 5450 (Though the port was smashed because they tried to use the wrong cable for it.) ~ (Plus of course, Motherboard, Heatsink, CD/DVD, Case, and PSU) Then went and bought GT 630 (Crappy GPU but it'll do for now), for about 10ish bucks. For basically 25 dollars I'd say that is pretty good. *Edit* I have added 2gb of DDR3 ram and an SSD to it as well. Added about 30 more dollars to the total, however, even without it, the PC is still decent for the price.
About 3:21 - fitting numbers 😜 - as soon as I saw that pile of crap I KNEW that you were gonna have problems with that. I had that very power supply for my first games pc build, only, it was powering a lesser 9800GT, 4GB ram and an Athlon X2. Within about a year, it packed in. Pile of crap 😆 Like that old saying "buy cheap, buy over and over again".
Hey budget builds you should do a video on budget ram options in different categories (ddr2,ddr3,ddr4) and take into account speeds , and cas latency? Just an idea.
great video, i bought a 775 pc for 90e with a q8300, oc mobo, 6gb ddr2 and hd 5850, sold the gpu for 40e, and bought for 60 a 750ti and sold the motherboard combo for 90e and bought a i3 2120, 8gb ram and mobo for 60e...the pc had a lovly coller master case, 1tb hdd and a 600w psu so i gues i made a good deal
You should do a video on high end LGA 1366 cpus, great buy if you can find them for cheap, literally running an i7-965 on my secondary pc alongside my 80 USD HD7970 and runs Skyrim Special edition with a ton of mods pretty well (when I say a ton I mean around 10 graphics mods and 7 smaller mods for a better time while playing.)
I used to build these types of PCs for around the same price and resell them for $80-120 for some profit advertising them as great as a office/light gaming PC.
@@azureknight777 I just bought me a Dell Optiplex 745 for 30 Lei (ca. 6,5 € or 7,30 $) on the flea market. Ordered 8 GB of DDR2 RAM from China to replace the 2 GB that was in it. Cost 15,20 $ on Ali. Also orderd a Q6700 on Ali for 13,38 $. I have some graphic cards lying around, bought them for 10 Lei (ca. 2,15 € or 2,50 $). Ofcourse I need to replace the 80 GB HDD with something bigger. Would be another 200 Lei (ca 40 € or around 50 $). Maybe I also need a second SATA cable as it needs the longer ones and I have only short ones lying around. Grand totale: 90 USD. Hmm.... more expensive than I thought.
I got a pentium 4 pc for free. The motherboard is a foxconn with a g31 chipset. After flashing the latest bios, making a "custom" VRM cooling, and putting a Xeon, I could over lock it to 3.66 ghz stable. It even worked out fine with "AMD only" ddr2 ram, so I could have 8 gigs with only two slots. Added a gt1030 and a generic usb 3.0 board, and it got to be a great computer for very cheap.
i have an old pc and a dell g3 laptop but would like to upgrade my PC.it has a msi g33m ms-7357 motherboard so what should i do, should i upgrade my cpu gpu only or should i upgrade my motherboard as well, but i'm on a tiny budget. not looking for £1,000 gaming pc performance so please tell me what you would do
Well you see 775 isn't the best, but it can be used on the down low, and trust me, you don't want to let people see you using this shit. Lemme catch my son using 775 unironically
Wow. So happens not long back I got given a motherboard with a q8200 in it, 8gb of ram and a gts250 GPU. Not bad for free. Good upgrade from my old Athlon 6400+ power hungry setup. So with this setup it will run on one 400w PSU, not on a sketch dual supply setup. I'd like to grab a 750ti for it or something. Makes for a good casual game machine to play with a controller on the TV
Where would one go for cheap PC cases for case modding? I am having absolutely no luck on local sale sites and thrift stores are always picked clean before I get there.
This is strange my pc has a c2d a gtx 550 ti and a 4gb ram and i can play gta 5 on high 1080p easily And i can play fortnite on the max 1080p somewhere 60 fps pubg still works 30 fps on 720p low
Skap you’re drunk, fortnite maxed out at 1080p uses more than a gig of vram and my gtx 570, i5 3570k and 8gb of ram can only scrap low 30’s with an overclock (mainly due to high shadows)
My lga775 motherboard msi g41-combo can do overclock a dual core CPU to 3.48ghz can play dota2 and call of duty mw2&3 and Black ops 1&2 ,total war Rome 2 & atilla at 1920x1080 with the help of Nvidia GTX 660 2 gb DDR5. It can run older software like window 7 64bit perfectly and you do not need to buy and keep upgrading window 8, 10 or even 11.
Higher end Core2 Quads can still run games pretty well. Q9400 is the lowest one that i'd recommend getting. On one PC I have a Core2 Quad Q9550 @ 3.8GHz and on Cinebench R15 it got 428cb which is really close to an i3-6100 (402cb), i5-4430 (448cb), i5-2400 (433cb) etc.
I got a Dell workstation PC for free off the side of the road one time. The motherboard had a bloated capacitor, so that's probably why it was thrown out. Had a free Core 2 Quad q6600, though, so I harvested that and all the screws.
You built almost the exact same thing as What I have here. This one started as a yard sale find for 3 dollars. The processor had been knocked loose from the heat sink and it would shut off. The thermal paste I bought for it costed more than the computer. Had windows 10, sticker on the case and all. If not for that I might not have even given the 3 dollars for it. I didn't know that glueing the heatsink back on it would fix the thing.
The Q6600 with the BSEL Mod and also overclocked to 3,5GHz what I have managed to get with the ASUS P5Q Board. Its still useable for budget gaming. The Cinebench score for me was 355. Better than a second gen i5.
I got a 775 pc from my uncle that had an asus p5q board, a core 2 duo, gts 250 and 2 gigs of ram for free. I ended up getting a q6600 for $5 and 8gb of ram for $18. It was a nice pc and i still get it out to mess with occasionally
I found a PC that was going to be trashed and installed a modded E5450 with 8Gb ram it is a friends daily office machine. I had to modify the bios an easy enough task. Machine has been running for a year @3.6Ghz and not missed a beat.
I have an x5450 xeon on an AsRock G41M-VS3 R2.0 motherboard, and it's a great kit because it supports up to 8GB of ddr3 ram. would it be like having a video about a kit with xeon's? still face the "current" processors at a much lower price. great video!
Its very good times for building a XP PC with 775 but pretty sure I could get some more value out of some old office PC with a i3 or i5 and a lower powered GPU. Any case, I just finnesed my XP PC: Intel e4300, 2gig ram, Geforce GT 430, cost about 6 USD in total. Also went for a slower CPU as I only play older games with this and wanted a quiet PC which it is, CPU fan don't even rev up under full load and it has a stock Pentium 4 cooler.
I run a 1155 with a i5-2400 and it runs basically everything I throw at it perfectly fine with med/high or high settings, even with a midrange graphics card. Can handle video editing & rendering decently well also. Definitely great value there and I plan to continue to run it until it dies.
Here's a comparison I set up on CPU Benchmark: www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i3-3225-vs-Intel-i5-2400/1474vs793 The i3 has a higher base frequency but only has 2 cores, and a lower power consumption of 55W. My i5 is a quad core and it's power consumption is 95W. Overall, i5s are typically better processors than i3s. I originally had an i3-2120 but I needed the quad core power. The 3225 is newer than my 2400, but newer doesn't necessarily mean better. Before I upgraded to the quad core, I wasn't able to run GTA V, my rendering times for 1080p videos were way higher than they are now, and generally my computer was a little more sluggish as compared to now what I'm used to running.
I have two PCs. One is coming, the other is already built. My Ryzen and Vega system is just sick. It does everything and dollar for dollar it is a fantastic value. My other PC will be an old Intel Core i5-3570 based system and I might throw in a Radeon R7 240 or a Radeon HD 7750 since I have no old Nvidia cards. The second system is intended as a backup in case I have another system fry like my last system did, also for use in backing up files and it will be a LAN streaming server mainly until it's needed as a backup PC.
you can get i3 or i5 for under 45 dell pc if you are patient but the issue is what graphics card to get as it will have to be low profile unless you get get one of the hp or asus workstations

Now not everyone'll be lucky enough to have ways of getting stuff that cheap, but man if you can...

even if these PCs arent going to be good for modern gaming, soon they will be retro PCs, which i would happily install XP on and run older games like a breeze, also, it would be nice to see a cinebench score on both these parts or for future builds, as it helps compare them to other options etc, if its not too time consuming!

I wouldn't exactly call Cinebench a good measure of performance. 3D mark serves as the closest to real life performance personally.

Nice video man
Make more budget build video in the future 👍👍
I run a 1155 with a i5-2400 and it runs basically everything I throw at it perfectly fine with med/high or high settings, even with a midrange graphics card. Can handle video editing & rendering decently well also. Definitely great value there and I plan to continue to run it until it dies.
How does an i3 3225 compared to an i5 2400
Here's a comparison I set up on CPU Benchmark: www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i3-3225-vs-Intel-i5-2400/1474vs793 The i3 has a higher base frequency but only has 2 cores, and a lower power consumption of 55W.
I love this video because its similar to how my first ever PC I built turned out, its insane how much a couple of years saving changed my PC
you can get i3 or i5 for under 45 dell pc if you are patient but the issue is what graphics card to get as it will have to be low profile unless you get get one of the hp or asus workstations
