I was wondering if the B550 CPU & APU support was a load of BS so I decided to see it for myself!

So the B550 in theory only supports the AMD 3000 CPU family and probably the 4000 series APU range. But as we know from the marketing hype train the older chips have been removed due to compatibility issues with the PCIe Gen4 lanes and also the increasing size needed to store all the CPU's and APU's in the AGESA code.
So today i am testing the Ryzen 7 1700X from the 1st Gen, then the Ryzen 5 2600 from the 2nd gen and also the Ryzen 3 2200G which is from somewhere in between.
The system is a Asrock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard
Ryzen 3 3100 CPU
EVGA RTX 2060 KO
and Silicon Powers latest Gen4 x4 NVME 1TB drive!
The results are surprising and also make total sense and will allow you to update the BIOS without having a directly compatible chip! Pretty cool! Although this seems to be only from APU's at present, more testing required!

Really interesting video answering the question a lot people are wondering about. Great work Mike.
Thanks 👍
Great video mike! That suspense on the 2200g! Your face said it all! Brilliant :)
Glad you enjoyed it 😂
@@mikesunboxing Thank you for testing the 2200g
Thank you for this - I am in the exact predicament that you've suggested - I'm building a PC, but will need to wait for GPUs to come into availability to use my 5000 series chip. My 3200g (bought as a placeholder) needs to work. Excellent.
Glad I could help!
did it work??
Very interesting video Mike :-) was very surprised by the 2200G test :D
You and me both!
Mike's unboxing, reviews and how to lol yes
This was extremely helpful. I was about to upgrade my motherboard to a b550 chipset and use my old Ryzen 5 2600 on it. Glad I watched this video first
glad to help
I just want to confirm that the R5 2600 does work with a B550, more specifically, the Gigabyte B550M DS3H. It didn't run with the default BIOS, I had to flash it with the newest one from their website before it recognized the 2600, hope this info helps someone.
It does help a lot, thank you so much
thanks Luis
Will a Ryzen 1700 work with Gigabyte B550 DS3H?
Should be okay I had one run on a similar board
@@mikesunboxing thanks man! And what about 2600?
Hey Mike! I got a 3200g working but I’m getting constant blue screens. I was thinking that they were occurring because of the incompatibility issues. Do you think this may be the case?
You can decode the blue screens and that might point in the right direction or check you have all the right drivers installed that is generally the cause of most blue screens
Great idea for a video, Mike! I am very surprised that it posted with the R3 2200G. I suppose there might be some workarounds in the future for backwards for the B550 compatibility with Zen+ chips.
Yes I hope so it makes sense if it is possible to allow a little backwards compatibility
@@mikesunboxing hi Mike. If you have an Asus mid-high end board test it again. It's running fine with my 1700.
@mike I ran my Asus Prime B550M-A WiFi with a Zen+ architecture Ryzen 5 3400G. And it's all good so far. 2days old system unit.
Very helpful video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I think the reason why BIOS didn't see nvme drive with 2200g/2400g might be the CPU pcie lan limitation. Due to the motherboard Pcie configuration, M.2_1, which is connected to cpu, might just don't connect to anywhere. 2400g only has x8 lans, if it all connect to the pcie x16 slot, then M.2_1 is just not connected. After all, 2200g/2400g is not officially supported. I might be wrong tho.
Yes this is the case I think in hindsight

I'm coming from the future, and like the box says: "Not compatible with 1st and 2nd AMD Ryzen gen processors" it's true! They never said "Not compatible with 1st and 2nd Ryzen APU's" Hoping AMD doesn't patch that in a future BIOS update. In another channel they made the experiment with an ASUS ROG B550-ITX and Ryzen 3400G and it worked! Thank you for solving the mith, Mike!
Which is that other channel and you could download this current bios from asrock website if it's available.

hope this helps anyone else looking for this similar build
thanks for the feedback, it seems a lot of these newer boards run just fine with older CPUs so all is good in the tech world :-)
Did the Ryzen 5 2600 have any issue with the b550?
Oh man, i have a (still packed) in the box b550m on my desk here, planning to swap my 2700X from a damaged but working b450m board,
unaware of this "uncompatibility" i was getting kind of worried actually.
your post motivates me to at least test it, before i return the board.
although i am using an NVME m.2 drive, i will post the results
Hi, I'm new to the channel and was here becuase I made a mid tower for my grandma with a B550 and because it 2as my first build, I didn't realise that the 3200g was classified as second gen and wouldn't work on the B550 VDH-WIFI by MSI, but without realising, I got it fully working and operational but every week or so the computer crashed (I didn't know why) so I came round with my dad and we checked memory which was fine and have been round 3 times trying to sort it out and it's only today that I realised that it's incomparable but it stol lworks 99.9% of the time , to ushohkd try this out :)
thanks for commenting, hope it is working okay now
Thanks for the review im getting a 3800x and now know it should work with the b550 chipset
Yes it will and the b550 or x570 is the best route
Hello, I got a question, I just a bought a MSI B550m A PRO and a 5600g, but the bios isn't updated to the last version, any idea if I can use a 5 2400g to do the update without any problems?
Hi Mike, I will buy a B550 Steel Legend, actually I have a 3200G, in the CPU List of Asrock B550 it says that the B550 Steel Legend supports the 3200G, it is true? I dont want to waste money:( greetings from Mexico!
If it says it supports it I would agree with them, it does seem very likely
Any data reports to those who were able to fit in a 2nd gen to latest on the b550 boards? It would be beneficial for the community to get a heads up for any problems that might have occurred in the past months.
yeah a few members on discord are running 2600 on the tomahawk b550 and no issues reported so far
2700x with Asus tuf b550m working with all bios versions in W10
been using for 12 months
2700x with G b550m s2h NOT working (USB initialisation issues in W10)
Hi Mike. Interesting experiment. I had to laugh, as every time I yelled something out to try, you'd try it. Warped minds do apparently think alike.
In regards to PCIe Gen4 M.2 drives. Perhaps now you see why I love them. I mean, you won't install Windows that fast with any other drives.
In regards to DRAM, I've been experimenting with mine and setting it to a bunch of different speeds and timings. In benchmarks, faster DRAM with tighter timings make a big difference. But for gaming and day to day things like watching UA-cam and such, I see very little difference between the stock 2133 with timings of 15 15 15 32 42 358 1T and my OC settings of 3733 14-15-14-30-44-290-1T. Thus, anyone on a super tight budget should have no problem with buying the cheapest DRAM they can find and not worry so much about the speed.
In regards to the B550 chipset. I see nothing on it that's much better then a B450 or X470, unless you're an overclocker like me. In that case you should just go with a X570 mobo in your price range. As of now, I see little advantage of buying the up coming Ryzen 4000 series CPU's as there is no upgrade path after them. The info I've gotten says this is the end of life for the AM4 socket. For that reason, I personally won't upgrade until the Ryzen 5000 series CPU's which I've fairly sure with require new mobo's with the AM5 socket, most likely with DDR5 RAM. Thus, I see no reason to spend money on a 4000 series chip when the 3000 series goes up to 16 cores and 32 threads.
Lastly, in regards to the IC thermal pads. They're awesome for swapping out CPU's like you did in this video. They may not be the best solution for everyday cooling, but they're a great time saver and much less messy when you have to change the CPU's often like some crazy overclockers, like me do. 😂 Great video, cheers.
@Fakens Plays Glad I could help.
The future should be as you said but with the current capacity issues with amd and fabs in general it will be interesting to see how things turn out being that the 5000 series will need a new node and the fabs will have to stop another node to make room. Interesting times indeed
Does the 2600x work on a gigabyte gaming x v2?
And a gigabyte aorus b550 elite v2?

How about checking some other motherboards aswell? I want to get a DS3H B550 from Gigabyte and I already got a 2200G, do you think it'll work? I can't upgrade the CPU rn but I really want this future-proofing..!

Hello Mike!
I bought a ASUS B550-A Strix + Ryzen 1600 AF + 3600mhz sticks. From what you know and tested do you think the combo should work? They say the 2600 works, so i assume the 1600AF should too, being Zen+. But what about the memory sticks? Ya got me kinda worried there when you said you chose 3200mhz for compatibility
Thanks in advance mate!
the ram probably will get to 3200mhz maybe more if you are lucky and the ram controller on the chip is up to the job
@@mikesunboxing So i should've gotten the 3200mhz sticks instead?
To be honest, my main worry is that if it will even boot, but if they work at 3200mhz only it's a waste :(
Id love to see an official video on the 3200g. There seems to be alot of mixed reviews with the B550 chipset and the 3200G. Some say it works, others say no.

i used a similar setup but it wasn't working for me, the b550 didn't recognize my m.2 ssd and kept taking me to the bios
good video... but do we need to bios upgrade or degrade something before using older CPUs????
no it isn't needed
I think in some cases could be needed, since most of bios updates include new agesa, loosing compatibility with older cpus. Most of time mobos come with the oldest bios, so it shouldn't be needed, but if they come already upgraded, it would be a nice try to use the bios flashback function to flash the oldest bios possible

Msi b550 gaming plus no support ryzen 5 1600
i would most likely go with the Asus for compatibility, there is a chance that the 1600 will work on a b550 but no guarantees and sometimes there are issues with m.2 slots so for safety i would so b450
my ryzen build kit consists of 3x brands of 2133 3x brands of 2400, I always start with a single 4g stick and go through the bunch till one works and 1 of 3x GPUs. I like to start with a basic low profile PNY gt 210 in most as I build on box and don't like to stress the PCI slot works in most cases, ASUS GTX 750 mini maxwell, works in some ASUS to stop the bios overscan on screen chopping the edges, that seems to happen even with rx 500 cards and for all MSI boards I have to go for the gigabyte gtx 1060 mini as most of my tester cards seems to screw with the bios graphics overlay specially on a320 boards. Getting it to post with the chip you want to use and a display out is half the battle won to move on to the parts you want to finish with.
Going to direct Terry to this vid so he can send either his chip or board back to amazon and exchange for something that works. Another how to to explore is the updating bios without reading the warnings often written in red under bios update information stop folk from wiping the support for their installed chip of the board thinking updating to the latest BIOS will fix all ills.
i think i am about to kill kaths b450 pro4 with r7 1700 with the latest bios update, should be fun
@@mikesunboxing You still have 3100 at hand£ or read the yellow warnings on update page its a ballache but you find something that covers what you want to do on a previous update. Got to love max for ease of use on that score

Hi I have ryzen 3 2200G I want buying mobo first because my asrock a320m die. I need save money for buying ryzen 5 5600g, it still work if use ryzen 3 2200G in A520M or B550M? And this work in all brand like MSI or Gigabyte?
check the motherboards support pages for bios compatibility a lot of boards will now work
I was thinking of buying a 3400G do you think b550 will be compatible??
not officially but it might work
Newer bios lose backwords the suport on older chips but usualy the baords are shipped with old bios so it should work with even 1600af
yes that is my thoughts on it
Does a Ryzen 7 2700x will work on a MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk?
it does from what i am hearing but not tried it myself
Thanks! I was hoping to get a 3200g to work on a b550 board with ram 4400mhz ram.. I think that would be awesome!! :P
That would be cool! just you might struggle to get the ram running at those speeds
@@mikesunboxing I hope I got it right.. So as I understand it the ram speeds which are stable, aren't determinted by the cpu instead theyre determinet by the chipset.
And for exampel some b550 itx boards support 4400mhz ram. So I thought, if the mobo is stable with the 3200g the ram speeds (if their on the qvl) would also be stable..
But now I thought the Imc (memory controller) is in the cpu and therefore the cpu determines how much speed it lets trough.. Tbh I'm a little confused right now..
Does the mobo or cpu determine ram speeds? (Ofcourse both do, but which is the limiting factor?)
HI Mike
between Gigabyte B550m ds3h vs Asrock B550m phantom gaming 4, which do you recommend?
asrock
@@mikesunboxing thanks
hi will B550M-A work with my r5 1600?
it should do, even more so if it is a R5 1600 AF that is a rebadged 2600
Do you think a ryzen 5 1600 af would work? It would mean the world to me if I could figure this out
yes it will
Hey, do you know whether r5 1600af works with b550-i strix?
no idea sorry not had that board but most 2000 series cpus work okay so should be fine
Mike's tu faits un super boulot j'adore ton contenues :)
Merci beaucoup - passez une bonne journée! :-)
I see that you got a 2200g to work. Does the 3400g work with a b550m?? PLEASE SAY YES
Yes it does
@@mikesunboxing MIKE THANK YOU I'm subbing right now
@@PHishPhosh Thank you! And welcome to the Channel :-)
I bought the cheapest AM4 motherboard I found without a lot of research (gigabyte a520m k)
Would it work with my r5 2600? I’m going to use windows 10 + Linux (dual boot) to do gaming and programming
Thanks!
yes that should be fine
Shouldnt you use a dedicated graphics card for the video output? Ryzen 1700x and 2600 dont have graphics built in so they can not send any signal to the display through on-board graphics ports
that is correct. i did install a separate gpu for those cpus i think
@@mikesunboxing Ah ok I saw it was connected, you removed for 2200g. I am thinking of buying a b550 for ryzen 5000 but I am afraid I wont be able to update the bios for 5000 series, I have a 1700. AMD makes things unnecessary complicated.
Does a 5 2600 works on the Msi b550 unify ? The mainboard is kinda new.. 🤔
yes it should do
could you tell me what is the cheapest CPU that can be used on B550 that supports at least 8 PCIe lans?
probably 3200g i think depending on the board otherwise a safe bet is the 3100
if u wanna make it go use tuf gaming b550 from asus
u can use tuf gaming b550-pro or b550m-e
2600 can run for solid validate asus tuf gaming b550-pro had their validate solid in their website from athlon 200ge until zen4 vermeer ryzen 9 5950x
Do you know if a Ryzen 5 1600 will work on an A520M DS3H motherboard?
not sure sorry not tried that or heard from anyone that has tried
Was there already an uodate that the 2200G and 3400G are now working on B550?
I'm using TUF B550M plus wi fi and Ryzen 5 3400G and its also doing fine
i think it is slowly coming through although they are not making it that well known to the end users
@@mikesunboxing thnks there and nice vids. Basing also from the forums I've read many users are also having the same setup from different mobo manudacturers.
Nkw the challenge for me is when i get the rtx 3060Ti to my setup if this can still be handled by my 3400g
Hello. Asrock a520m-itx / ac run r3 2200g firmware is not available on the site already. Can you help me?
there isn't a bios that officially supports it, so any bios should be okay but watch out for USB or PCIe issues
Thanks I needed that!...B450 for me with as many Ryzen chips to choose from to hell with a B550 MB rite now!...
Glad I could help
Hi, coming back to this video after I had to somehow boot my ASUS Prime B550M-A, I managed to get Ryzen 5 2600x to boot it up so I could update the BIOS for the new CPU. Ryzen 9 5900x boots and works great after BIOS update.
Does ryzen 5 1500x will work out of the box on b550m motherboard? Without bios update
yes it should do just be aware some pcie lanes and maybe usb might not work as expected
Will the b550 phantom gaming handle 5950x Ryzen and 3080?
yes it is listed as compatible
The other night in your live stream I found out that I'd need a 3000 series gpu, ie; 5 3700 to use the B550. So I bit the bullet and purchased a 5 3700x cpu for the B550 system I'll be upgrading my wife's system this coming weekend. I'm disappointed the B550 isn't allowing the 2000 series cpu's. C'est la vive, c'est la guerre.

Tristan g Just get a B450 because the major difference is that the B550 supports PCIE Gen 4 while the B450 only supports Gen 3. And Gen 3 is fast enough for all except the users who want the fastest peripherals.
@@1973Hog I understand that, I have a B450 already, it appears to be defective in that the 1 and 3 ram slot don't recognize additional ram. I've swapped and switched and tried new; all the same Corsair lpx 3200 mhz 8 gb sticks. So I've found myself upgrading not only the mobo, B550, but the cpu, 5 3700x, as a result. I'm trying to please my wife after getting her to move from laptop to desktop. I'm gonna' win this, she'll not want a laptop for gaming dag nab it!
Tristan g Good luck. Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble.
@@1973Hog Not really trouble, just an unexpected upgrade $. It'll be fine in the long run.
tristan how is it going everything working now?
I have ryzen 3 2200g and gigabyte B550M DS3H motherboard, each other will work if i want build with them??
it might, 50/50
Just checking out LOL
I have a B550 Steel Legend with an Athlon 3000g (just for now) and 16gb of RAM 3200mhz...
It seems to support it (not officially)
yes there does seem to be a lot of sucess with non supported processors
Ryzen 7 2700X works with ASUS TUF Gaming-plus wifi II
at first i was concerned about my m.2 boot device not working in an gen 4 pci-e config,
but there is a second m.2 slot, which handles only gen 3, problem solved.
also i think configuring the other m.2 to only 3rd gen will work too
thanks for the info
i am actually in this exact situation rn so dis was very helpfull, thanks
Glad I could help! :-)
I am trying the 2600 on gigabyte b550i (itx), got into bios, BSOD sometimes when installing windows- critical structure corruption. other times no BSOD, but windows installation error 0x8007025D. using SN550 nvme. Tried f11 and f10 bios. The 5600x was nowhere to be found and I wanted to use the 2600.. but no luck so far:(
sorry to hear that
Does that mean some b550 motherboards are compatible with 2nd gen ryzen apus?
yes and even some 1st gen chips
Ok thanks dude. I was not sure what to do as there are still many people claiming that a ryzen 5 2600x works fine with b550. Gonna stick to 450 then
it does depend from what boards you are using but it seems most b550 boards work okay at the moment with older CPUs
My build using this board and a 2700 will not boot up. The CPU and RAM light are on solid. No screen. Tried my 1600 cpu and it will not work either. Same lights.
Would a Msi Mpg B550 gaming plus support a ryzen 2600?
seems so with the current bios
will asus tuf b550m gaming plus will work with ryzen 5 2600
it seems to from what i am hearing
I got my Tomahawk B550 + Ryzen 5 2600 + M.2 + SSD + 2070 Super loaded windows and it fired right up, this was about 2 years ago, still going strong. The one thing I did notice was, in the bios, the game boost button is not lit, can't turn it on, doesn't affect performance from my experience.
game boost just makes it run hotter and makes the fans ramp up
@@mikesunboxing good to know!
did you update the bios? my 2600 and b550 tomahawk just boots to a black screen
I bought an asrock b550 phantom 4 and a ryzen 5 5600x. I stick my old ram in (gkill ripjaw 3000mhz cl15) and I get 5 beeps and the vga+boot led lights on. The vga is fine, it works well in my older motherboard. I have to see what it does when I take out the ram. Is it possible that the motherboard has an older bios and does not support my ryzen 5600x? It is either cpu or motherboard problem or maybe the ram is not supported.?😫😫😫
yes that is exactly what is happening i think the bios will likely be the problem. look at the bios sticker and see what version it is then check the Asrock site for that board and see what version is the first to support that chip
Mike's unboxing, reviews and how to thank you! Will o
Will the b550 mpg support my ryzen 2600 six core 12-Thread?
yes it will
Yo Mike, hook me up w that quick reply.. need to know ASAP, can I pit a Ryzen 7 2700x in the MSi B550 gaming plus?
Im on the same problem rn but I think It won’t because it’s still a 2 gen so.
yes it seems so from what i am hearing
So I actually just got into building. Built my first. Didn't pay enough attention to compatibilities. I built a msi rig with msi mpg b550 gaming plus, msi radeon 5600xt, and an and ryzen 7 2600x. I used a ssd but am waiting on a m.2 nvme I was going to use. So I installed os on the ssd. I've had no issues. Been gaming away. So now I'm extremely confused because I was about to put a ryzen 5 2600xt on an msi a520 for my grandfather but now I'm concerned...
