The open gate function on the Mega Vault looks like a good feature. I prefer the Shembiner for my saw hanger. Its nice to have one hand access and storage. The larger hooks tend to catch on things. Locking gates help with that. It's more of an issue when fighting through the canopy in awkward positions. Its a good idea to try out a few different options like you are. Many climbers get so brand loyal that they don't experience something that could work better for them.
Yeah, I could run either size Shembiner for my saw and be happy. That's one thing I got right the first time since starting into climbing. I still also really like my Mega Vault. I'm a bigger guy and so a big hook is the least of my worries. A week ago I clawed my way thru a tree canopy as the tree coming down had a spar and branches intertwined with a neighboring tree. Tenex slings are big and snag easily but the MVault is much more friendly than the little Transporter and small DMM Vaults.
I have a broken petzl plastic hook turned into a shembiner, and for other storage just a big old carabineer fitted like a tool carrier, it works nice cz it can just fold flat out of the way
I like a big hook up front where I can get to things without twisting back and hunting for something I cannot see. That first hook tends to accumulate everything I use for the entire climb. Nice review.
I agree. I am not very good at behind-the-back shenanigans. I see ROCK N ARBOR has a tool hook out now. Maybe it is a little bigger than the regular DMM vault? Not sure. The RNA's can be pre-ordered now for less than 30 bucks. I might order a couple then me and my boys will have all that we could ever need.
That's too bad, given the cost of the Transporter! I bought two since the pair was much cheaper per hook. Suppose I should sell the new one when I get around to it.
I bought two as a pair because they were so much cheaper each. The one I showed very much hangs open unless I close it each time. I have not yet used it on a saddle. My other transporter automatically closes. I think if you could cross a Shembiner with a Vault, you'd have a deep hook with a manually closed gate. I'd actually buy that if someone made it.
beautiful and pretty expensive toys you have there. one thing l will say is: those non locking wire gate transporter’s get caught on the slightest little branch that you may of leaned into, your rope gets caught in them sometimes in tight quarters and the wire gate often gets ripped off center which totally exposes your gear (which could be dangerous to the people below). that’s exactly why l only use locking transporters and even they get stuck on things if you forget to lock the gate. they might be great for vertical climbers, guys that are only going up n down on a spar, but us horizontal tree climbers guys that do a lot of limb walking need those gates closed, so it doesn’t screw up our rhythm/flow.🤓 thanx, for the review.🫡👊🏼
I sometimes wish I was in the NW where I could just climb straight up, way up high. Nice and easy. I'm kind of big and definitely heavy so my movement thru trees is pretty methodical. Oh, I'm old too. I haven't gotten into pruning much. With that I could see more desire for locking gates. Better yet, I'll let my boy do the pruning work! I got a lanyard figured out for his saddle and so now I can let him cut small branches.

A carrier that folds flat would be nice. For the cost of some of them, you'd think they'd do that.
The new Rock Exotica Transporter XL will be available in January 2024 I think.
It’s gonna be the same size as the mega vault.
Thanks

Love the schembeaner
The Rock Exotica is not suposed to stay open, but a bit of silicone oil will solve it.

My transporter never hung open though I wish would sometimes... that's a cool feature.
