Monkey Beaver Climbing Saddle Adjustable Bridge...Rope Grab Style
Переглядів 7479 місяців тому
Someone had questions on how to setup an adjustable bridge on a Monkey Beaver arborist climbing saddle. Kits can be ordered from Monkey Beaver which include a Petzl RingOpen and rope grab. The ring replaces one of the saddle's rigging plates as shown. Otherwise there are other methods for adding adjustable bridges. Richard Mumford has a good video where he tests a CT RollNLock equipped bridge. ...

I was able to work a DMM Ceros carabiner through the Zillon landyard eye sleeve. I bought a Petzl Zigzag and DMM Director instead of the fancier Zigzag with built-in swivel. Its been a while since you first installed the Notch JetStep on your spurs. Now you are fitting another JetStep on new titanium spurs for your son. Am I correct to take this as an affirmation that in your opinion, the Jetstep is the best spur mounted ascender, and that the spur mount concept is an acceptable way to climb. I am thinking to follow your lead and try the same setup. I like the way you think things out, considering the pros and cons of the stuff you buy and put to use.

    • @boomupengineering
      @boomupengineering 2 місяці тому

      To be fair, for perhaps more traditional foot ascenders, I have only tried the KiwiKlimber. You know, they've got a single toothed cam that captures the rope against the ascender body. Since I seem to have no problem with kicking out of the Jet Step - it's perfect for me. I don't have to weight my rope to start out, it's rope friendly and is easy enough to mount to spurs. I haven't seen any others that I thought would be easier to mount, besides the expensive Kiwi. I know others cobble foot ascenders onto their spurs or maybe buy the Edelrid spurs since they sell a mountable foot ascender. I like having the option to rope climb whether I've got spurs on or not. Suppose I'm more haphazard when it comes to climbing and having to constantly adjust. Always good to have options!

      I started with Notch steel spurs but didn't like how they moved around on my foot. They would slip past the heel on my boot. I was going to try NuGreen 2-piece lower velcro straps but I then sold the spurs. I bought these Klein pole spurs next. Heavy but I like the narrow stirrup which holds onto my boot very well. Now I have no issues even when using traditional straps. I also have a pair of Buckingham Titanium spurs (tree gaffs) and just mounted my Jet Step foot ascender. I'll release that video soon.

  • @mattfleming86

    Thanks for this. I purchased the CT removable ascender and that cobble of steel clamping plates is hot garbage. There is NOT sufficient clamping force to keep the ascender in one place. I'll be using the plates that came with the CT to fix mount to the shank like you did. TBH I also do not like the QD setup of the CT it is prone to self-detach unless you do some bending work on the little tab to stiffen it up. But i'm already invested and money is tight lol.

      Yeah, I've seen those Courant Koala saddles. They make a small version which would be good for my boy but we are making due with the New Tribe saddles to which I added rings so they could run a lanyard. I do agree about the elastic and such. At first I literally started to think I would never truly enjoy climbing because leg straps creeping up make me very uncomfortable. Borderline painful because of big legs and the fact I've had hernia surgery before. I'll have to make a few more videos. I've got materials to build pads for my Buckingham Ti spurs. I want foam padding like the Opsal's but will make the metal cuffs out of thin stainless. If that doesn't work, I have another idea, plus I've got a set of Distel fiberglass cuffs. I've got screws to mount them and I'll get some foam rubber to line them like the Opsal's. I like Opsal pads best thus far - I just need something that fits my shins better.

    Very interesting system . I've been climbing for 10 years and my setup has evolved into something very similar to this. I would lose the gold ring there's plenty of room without it, and why not just use your side d? Also i don't like the ultralink, it's too slow to open, especially in an emergency. I recently started using a petzl freino z under the uni to add friction for descent, it's like they were made for eachother!

    • @boomupengineering
      @boomupengineering 5 місяців тому

      Honestly I am certain I added the Petzl rings without much thought because so does Monkey Beaver when they show adding an adjustable bridge. I know the rings are more friendly to webbing and bridge rope with their nice big radius. I'll have to see if there is a clever way to make it all work with the stock paw plates. Yeah, I don't have to use the ultralink. I'll check out the Frieno Z. Do you add that and skip wrapping your rope around the Unicender for descent? I am unfamiliar with th Frieno Z and how much friction it can provide. As heavy as I am, I would like more friction because I have to wear gloves to descend at a controlled pace. I have Mumford's horn or whatever it is called, on my Uni. I can see that lessening friction versus the stock configuration. Thanks, I'll check out the Frieno Z.

    • @christopherwaller3115
      @christopherwaller3115 5 місяців тому

      @@boomupengineeringuse rings or plates doesn't really matter. I just think it's pointless to have that ring on a ring. The freinos friction spur works good with a wrap around the uni for srt, no wrap for drt. Your still gonna want gloves though. Sounds like your uni drum mod reduces friction a little too much. I've been using mine without the drum for years and it works ok but there never was quite enough friction for srt without the freino

    • @boomupengineering
      @boomupengineering 5 місяців тому

      @@christopherwaller3115 10-4, I'll give a Freino Z a try. Since I no longer have the paw (rigging) plates with big loops hanging out, I like the Petzle RingtoRing sticking out. Makes it easy to find and connect my lanyard. Since I'm using the Petzl Adjust to do my adjustable bridge, I have to use a ring on that end or else another connector to engage the Adjust.

    I think I need to replace my case. I had the brake side open and i was playing with the brake, on and off to try to figure out how to remove the pieces. The spring and rod piece in the spring would hit a piece of plastic/the frame that sticks out where it connects to the sheat metal. Busted a tiny piece of plastic and now it doesn't sit right in there.

      I could be mistaken about the newer Skullgard suspension. Probably it doesn't pivot in the back like the Lyft but the ratchet hangs down way low. Low relative to the previous style of Skullgard. My bad. Regardless, I hate the low ratchet. It might help some with keeping their hat on when bending over, but it doesn't fit my head very well. The light weight and low wearing height of the blue carbon fiber hat means it stays on better, even though the ratchet doesn't hang down low.

Sure I could shop around and save a 100 bucks but I'd still need to add the straps to keep the leg loops from riding up. I also felt compelled to support Hunicke since I learn a fair bit from him. Bear in mind that I have two boys, now 9 and 11. I need enough gear to keep us all going. Yes the gear is expensive and I rarely buy the cheap stuff, although most is purchased on sale as I have time to shop around. You should see how proud are my boys when they tell other kids and adults that they climb and can go up 70ft in an instant. Again, priceless life lessons that they will never forget, like looking out for each other and paying attention to stay safe. Who knows, maybe I'll pick up a used chipper, put a dump box on my truck and let them do odd tree jobs when they get older. Oh, I did have a starting budget to get going with tree climbing. I was faced with $3-4k of professional tree work to protect my house. My boys are both dang proud as they've help me get through the worst of it. I get it. With Bidenomics, everything is super expensive these days. Don't tell my wife that my $7500 Kubota mower is worth more than her car!

    The new Rock Exotica Transporter XL will be available in January 2024 I think. It’s gonna be the same size as the mega vault.

    How do you like the hyper climb.i ask because it's a attempted copy by Samson of the yale version bluemoon and wesspur version yale focus .I received my focus 200ft it's got the best hand splice I've seen. Blue moon I love this is red version .very nice.the bluemoon in my opinion has the strongest cover of the 24 strand .I have new poison ivy 120ft .but when I opened it it's alot thinner than bluemoon yale version. Samson sherril made it.but realy like the yale .so haven't used this ivy .feels thin

      I am not the best at comparing ropes - I really haven't tried many yet. My first bit of rope was a full spool of Hyperclimb because it was something like 60 cents per foot, delivered. Works fine for me. I do believe I have a new Poison Ivy rope packed away - I'll see if I can find it this weekend. I know my Rope Runner Pro flattens the Hyperclimb pretty good but I expect anything will behave that way with my weight. My Unicender doesn't care and works fine. With that and the Mumford drum, I have to wear gloves to slow myself when coming down. But the Unicender still locks hard when I come of my wrap. My boys and I have played with 200ft of Notch Dragon which is a 11mm rope. That was super cheap at maybe 45 cents per foot. We've gone out to Savage Gulf and repelled down some of the rock cliffs. But that is some small stuff when trying to put your hands around it. So yeah, my rope experience is pretty low. I have the Poison Ivy and a Yale Scandere rope waiting for me when I get out next. I think those all are supposed to be 11.7mm. What I need to do is finish getting my second set of spurs setup so both my boy and I can go up in a tree together. I need to get pads setup for my new set so that I can dial in my Kleins for the kid. I have a good sized oak on the hill behind the house which will be good for that.

      There's no telling what UA-cam and these other sites do when we aren't looking. They have a lot of influence and control over what we see. Scary.
