This should have been an easy product for Sony to sell. They made virtually all the technology that went into it. Sony is amazing in their ability to make some products that are indestructible, and some that don't work after a few months.
Sweet you got it working. On my 2019 Tokyo trip I picked up a working (Yes WORKING) PSX for $90. Also bought a Hi-Saturn and a V-Saturn, along with several Saturn games.

I’m actually trying to find a launch model PS2 10000 model, I’d love to try and modify one to play everything (take the region lock down) , and upgrade the laser to a brand new KHS-400C if the rare 400A lasers in those models is dead. Also, I do some basic repair stuff myself, I’m in New York but I’ve got an INCREDIBLE mod / repair guy if you ever need someone else! It's funny how the PSX in the pirate use basically have the same problem as Xbox Series intended use, that the slow SSD bus transfer speed creates stutters and freezes. :D

In case anyone was wondering I found that after using MechaPWN on the PSX I can play my US PS2 games now as well. I found that with the PS1 games I can only play Original Japanese PS1 games and burned Japanese PS1 games, though I found that if I patch the US PS1 Images to report their region as Japan it runs no problem. I came up with a slight work around, I patched a US PS1 Gameshark image to Japanese region and burned it and booted it up on my PSX, I select start game without codes and then I eject the Gameshark I patched and put my burned or original US PS1 game in to the PSX let it read the disc and then I hit X to start the game. It then loads my US game disc with no issue. It seems like there may be something stopping any other region PS1 game from ever getting to the PS1 splash screen but the region patched gameshark seems to be a great way to get those US games booted..
Hey Adam, would that friend of yours that fixed up your PSX for this video happen to know how to fix the DVR portion of the PSX? I tried installing PSBB to my PSX and messed up the DVR/Firmware portion of my PSX. So I can only play PS1 and PS2 games with it, I don't really care about using the DVR I just want it all working again. All the DVR side does now is the blinking when it is tuning but the software for controlling it does seem to come up. I would really appreciate the help, thanks anyways regardless.
I did some reading so I tried to run the update disc to try and fix it and it didn't even seem to want to start. I was doing so well with my PSX and it was my dumbass that made this unicorn not work 100%. lol
At the moment, no one has reversed engineered the interface for additional devices (e.g. DVD writer, memory stick, internal flash) for DESR consoles However, once that is done, it will be easy to add support for those additional devices thanks to the "BDM" support recently introduced in Open PS2 Loader.
In my primitive tests (copying a video from memory stick to HDD), I measured around 350 KB/s transfer speed. This is even lower than USB read speed, so I think that memory stick support isn't really worth it for game loading. It would work just fine for storing other kinds of data, however... Also, in the manual for the unit, it specify that it does not support parallel transfer modes, so that is a possible reason why the speed is slow.
Awesome video! Love the effort that went into making this work, it’s cool to see. I remember seeing articles online about this when it came out. I was so confused about it 😂.
Just an interesting thing: Not only fans called the PS1 as PSX, Sony itself did. That was the internal code name after Nintendo backstabbed them. Then, magazines of the time picked it up to use as a short.
Adam, Here's a guide to make a reliable PSX it's a lot of hard work but worth it. If the vents are on the sides very carefully drill some holes in the side silver pieces and depending on the motherboard printing, mod it (if possible) for liquid cooling on both the cpu and gpu and mount the radiators with properly sized fans to the side each chip is closest to... also it probably has an IDE HDD have that port swapped for a SATA port, have the IDE drive cloned onto a selected SATA drive, I'd recommend a 1tb (the psx drives are small in capacity from what i heard on top of being terribly built) specifically an SSD and finally, get a normal DVD Player laser and switch it. Typically (from what I've seen), in consoles of that era, disc drives were tied optical drive subsystems and therefore their own processors so that should fix that too. After all that, there ya go, better faster and larger drive with no thermal throttling. The Ultimate reliable PSX!!!! P.S with the drive mod, you can migrate the games to the internal drive reliably.
PSX was a massive missed opportunity for Sony. I suspect that for PSX to have worked properly, it should have been supervised by the PlayStation development team, rather than Sony's consumer electronics dept, who by that point, seemed to be somewhat treating PS2 integration as an afterthought feature for other devices, rather than as a device in itself. Sony has in the past had a really bad history of having great mechanical engineering, and terrible software engineering on some of their consumer products (various flavours of Mini Disc, such as Net Mini Disc suffered from this issue, along with various models of MP3 Walkman ) to their detriment, as practically all consumer electronics are reliant on a software interface these days. But with the PSX, everything seemed to go wrong, be it hardware or software. It's a shame, because ultimately, a PlayStation with DVR functionality is a great idea - but perhaps one that might have faired better with a PlayStation 3 at it's core. There is a certain irony there, as both in Japan, and in Europe, Sony would release digital television adapters that gave the PS3 DVR functionality. I regularly make use of my PS3's PlayTV adapter for that reason. Ok, it might not be HD, but it's a good setup, with the PS3 handling Blu-Ray playback, gaming, and recording TV.
Everytime people say PSX to the PS1 I always tell them "Do you mean the PS2 DVR?" and then they will look at me as I am from outer space. I simply do not understand those people, PSX is the PS2 DVR. Just because they had PSX as a codename or a name of a project, PS1's og codename was PSX, does not mean it was the real name. Is it hard for them to say PlayStation, PlayStation 1, PSOne or PS1? Colin Ridgway, I am with you on this

It’s like a meme Also talking about memes, the god damn hard off background music. It’s like a never ending loop of the same hard off brand shopping song and it is very surreal to hear it outside of the store
Next time you're in the NC/SC area I need to let you make a video with my fully functional PSX-7700. Mine has a different boot screen process and plays all PS2 discs, I've had it for so long I even have movies saved to the HDD that I recorded off of analog cable lol.
oh right I forgot the McDonald's Happy Disc was a thing! I guess I could think of worse things to test the PS-X with when it can only load PS2 CD-based games. XD but at least that you have FMCB/HDLoader running on there that gets around not being able to play DVD games natively? I guess except for the slowdown and all that... Neat to see it all running!
@ 23:36 For a moment there, I thought that was the PSX hard drive failing. LOL My Toshiba laptop's hard drive made that same exact sound before dying. I remember reading about it when it first came out in Japan. I was jealous. Had no idea that the PSX was a poorly made console. Good thing it didn't come out in America.
I had no idea these were so sought after. I was stationed in Japan in the Marine Corps late '03-'04 and bought a 7000 on a whim. I already had the PS2 and by then switched to XBOX. In my mind I thought this would be SONY'S answer to get a leg up on Microsoft idk what did I know? I was just spending money back then. Fast forward to now 12/19/24 it's still brand new in the box never used. Might see what I can get for it on eBay!
I'm guessing that PS2 game was released in a Happy Meal or something. I know Burger King had some games released. The closest we got to anything like that in Australia was those little Game Boy look alikes where you shoot literal underwater rings through hoops.
1:25 imagine the spiritual successor to the PS2 Bravia: *Mike Chi gets a partnership with Hisense, TCL, or some other TV manufacturer to have a line of Smart TV’s with a built-in RetroTink 5X so they have component and RGB SCART inputs instead of just HDMI and composite inputs that are there by default*
PlayStation X (aka PSX) was a codename for the original PlayStation Sony used to distinguish from the Nintendo Play Station. So, it is somewhat official, but they dropped the name and just called it PlayStation and later PS1.
Now they have changed a lot. Now they have patched the operating system so that it changes it to English they have a Ulf launcher that now launches games from it and they now have a mcboot launcher for it as well and they now have a way to replace the hard drive inside it as well but when you do that the security feature is the DVR functionality will be disabled
Shocked to learn the PSX was built so poorly. Considering it not only serves as a PS2 (with the games support and music / video playback), but also a TV recorder, you'd think they get a laser that is reliable long term and a hard drive that can be rewritten and accessed quite a bit, since people will record and delete shows or movies on and off it a lot. No wonder there's not so much footage of the PSX out there, when most of these decided to call it quits simultaneously it seems.
I never looked into it but first thing that comes to mind is: cant you swap the dvd laser with a new one...? I understand it is not a normal ps2 laser but perhaps there might be a sony dvr that used the same laser back than?

Haha, I refuse to believe Toyratt would give anything away for free. He's a good guy, but doesn't budge on price. I can't knock him too much though. He's got good products but wew lad, his stuff is pretty expensive for Canadian video game price standards.
Just a suggestion if you care at all, you can get USB 2.0 versions of the Sandisk Cruiser Fit that are like $10 and I believe you can use them on old consoles like these and they're not nearly as unsightly as a massive thumb drive sticking out, looks like a wireless receiver if anything. and you can get them for $10 for 64GB at least where i am in NC, on amazon.
23:37 that’s not the sound of a stock PSX or its HDD It’s the lawnmower and boat parts he got off of a 1938 Roadster in Cuba. The mechanic there got the better deal though, Adam traded in a Free McBoot memory card, a Jag2SNES with a set of HD Retrovision component cables, and McDonald’s Happy Disc. The Roadster now runs better than ever
Based on everything I have read, the hard drive is the achilles heel of the PSX. With the release of Ghidra, it is only going to be matter of time before security protections are over come.
@@AdamKoralik this is actually kinda a big deal. Now if we can one of these and get some one to reverse engineer or figure out how there usb 2 is setup were talking wide open ps2 loader
Interesting video man. I guess the big question is - why not take the guts out of an original PS2 and put it into the PSX shell, complete with HDD and Free McBoot?

I can't knock him too much though. He's got good products but wew lad, his stuff is pretty expensive for Canadian video game price standards.
And right after Adam stopped recording the PSX died again
Nice it's totally worth it for a PlayStation x
Got mine for 98 dollars it’s in full working order and I ended up modding it at the end still works good though
No biggie, this was just for demonstration purposes.
I thought I misread the title, I mean modding is one thing, actually having one that f’cking works that’s completely another thing altogether. 🤘😜😂🤘
20:33 tell this to Shadow Man 2 xP I think I've counted ten seconds shorter load USB vs the genuine disc
17:36 - Lmao, RIGHT AFTER you looked back at the camera, the screen just goes blank. xD
HardOff stores in Japan sound awesome! So much cheaper and more reasonable than broken stuff on eBay.
For videos like this, maybe place a mirror below the camera at an angle that reflects the monitor screen.
23:37 that’s not the sound of a stock PSX or its HDD
It’s the lawnmower and boat parts he got off of a 1938 Roadster in Cuba. The mechanic there got the better deal though, Adam traded in a Free McBoot memory card, a Jag2SNES with a set of HD Retrovision component cables, and McDonald’s Happy Disc. The Roadster now runs better than ever
I'm curious as to why the DVD laser is not replaceable on this.
You'd have to ask Justin to be honest.
You can replace it, but good luck finding one.
Based on everything I have read, the hard drive is the achilles heel of the PSX. With the release of Ghidra, it is only going to be matter of time before security protections are over come.
20:43 wait what there are ps2 with usb 2.0?!
I also dont know a PS2 with USB2.0. Maybe a dev kit?
That's what I've been told, but they're apparently super rare. Like, last couple batches in 2012 or whatever it was.
@@AdamKoralik this is actually kinda a big deal. Now if we can one of these and get some one to reverse engineer or figure out how there usb 2 is setup were talking wide open ps2 loader
@@kickflipdemon Well, I want to be clear, this is just something I've read online. I don't actually have one.
@@AdamKoralik true lol just excited at the idea
How did he get it to say the words on the Home Screen to English? I have one and mine works but everything is still in Japanese.
I'm just guessing you didn't watch before commenting.
Yea not all the way thu, now I did and thanks 👍🏾 it’s a cool system and concept but horrible engineering tho.
4:33 “my brain is a monkey inside a wheel”
No no no. Adam’s brain is a 🐢 riding a 🦏 on a 🐹 wheel luring it with a 🥔 on a stick (NOT a 🥕)
Interesting video
Interesting video man. I guess the big question is - why not take the guts out of an original PS2 and put it into the PSX shell, complete with HDD and Free McBoot?
Because it wouldn't fit?
Man it's great to see this thing "working"... for now. I really wish this took off WW and was built better.
Also, who is this nerd? Probably likes some pretty neat stuff 😁
Hey Adam. Found one a few weeks ago NOT in junk, presumably operable, at Hard Off like 7000¥.
Maybe that one actually works.
At the end of the day it is nothing but furniture good to look at, I wonder if smb would work good on it
I would have expected you to go with that japanese copy of nights on ps2 cause i think i remember you showing that off like years ago lol, not disappointed with the ハッピー disc tho lol
It's a DVD disc.
@@AdamKoralik OH holy crap you're right, i misremembered it as being part of the Sega Ages 2500 series, which are all CD's im pretty sure, oops hah.
