- Where can I find Wigan's Greatest Pie? I search all the best pie shops in Wigan town to taste test and rate Wigan's pies! Who will be declared the winner? Watch until the end to find out.
Wigan, an English town west of Manchester, is known for its love of pies and its residents, the Wiganers, are often called "pie eaters". The nickname is said to have originated during the 1926 General Strike, when Wigan miners were forced to return to work before other miners in the area and were forced to eat "humble pie". Wiganers are proud of the nickname, and pies are considered a delicacy in the region. Wigan even hosts the World Pie Eating Championship every year

Rolling pin ormskirk rd, best pies ever.
Definitely on my list 👍
Glad to see cash only in first shop, use it or lose it and that would be a travesty only no one really realises it yet!
I agree with you totally 👍 cash is king
I’ve lived away from Wigan for a few years now and this video makes me bloody miss it. It’s great to see that some things never change!
Glad you enjoyed it, hope I did it justice in that case! 😀
Saw an edited version of Caligula at the Unit4 in Pemberton in 1980. I didnt know it was edited until I saw the un-edited version many years later. I am drooling over all your pies. Wigan is the pie capital of the world ! Ate a pie at Galloways in 2015 excellent
I may have seen that too, as I used to go there quite a bit in the 80s. Wigan is the pie capital of the world, shame about Pooles Pies though!
Me too.
First pie shop 100% the best I’ve eaten them all 🎉
True that 👍💯
Nah whittles is better nothing beats there steak pies
@@carlt9265 didn’t try a steak 🤔
You should have gone to the muffin man. They're the best pies in Wigan.
I’ll add him to my list! 👍
From Wigan and live in Brazil. That was a hard watch for me. I've not been back since 2017 and miss a pie. Meat and potato from Galloways was always my favourite. Nice and peppery. Any would do right now!
I hope the video gave you a bit of a ‘taste’ of the old town! Hope you’re enjoying Brazil!
@@andrewemmerson better with a pie shop!! Just can't see them catching on here🤣
@@mrzionist1948 😂👍
Chorley to Australia here; we can get basic minced beef pies here but nothing like a good Northern meat and potato pie. We can also get the Fray Bentos in tins but they are 5x the price here than the UK.
@hwallen9316 yeah I lived in OZ between 1990-97. Good pies in my local in Randwick, Sydney. Washed down by VB and having a bet.
I still miss The Old 1904 Bakehouse in Orrell😢
Where in Orrell was that??? I did my secondary school in Gathurst close by. In the senior years we would walk into Orrell village for fish and chip lunch. Oh the scent of the Heinz factory on the way making oxtail soup.
@@hwallen9316 50yrs from the junction at Orrell Post, halfway between it and the turn into St Peter's highschool, at the top of Broxton avenue
It's been a really good, if a little expensive pizza & pasta takeaway/delivery business called Primo for about a decade
Never knew that one 😪
Broxton Ave. Behind where bargain booze is now

Hey, thanks! You’re the first person ever to recognise me! Say hello next time, glad you enjoyed the video 😀🙏
Whittles pie shop on ormskirk is THE BEST innWigan by far...especially the Donner Kebab pie 😋😋😋
Good to know!🥧😆
@@paulhigham6047 I concur but will pass on the kebab pie had a couple but the flavours are unbalanced.
Ormskirk is not Wigan
@@michelles2299 On Ormskirk Road in Wigan....NOT in Ormskirk.
I've never had a butter pie, or even knew they existed. However, they look soooo good.
They really are 😆
I’m from Warrington and Wigan has the best pies on the planet
Praise wonders from a wiire!
Come on the wire lol you’re rugby team ain’t so bad either mate happy Christmas 🎅
@@michaelbell6916 Same, have a good one!
Great work - brilliant video. As an expat. Wiganer who has lived in Sheffield for the last 40 years I can honestly say that the pies over here are not a patch on Gents/Greenhalgh’s/Gallaghers etc. Luckily my old mates smuggle pies over the border when they are over this way (county lines pastry smuggling - whatever next?). Would be interested to see what you think of McRobb’s pies in the centre of Standish - expensive but outstanding in my opinion.
Glad you enjoyed it, keep on smuggling! 😂 Never heard of McRobbs, might have to try that one!
Gents Pepper Lane, cracking old bakery, regular visits over the years -sad its all up for sale, probably the end of a great era, fair play to the owners though, still at it !!
Hope it continues after I only just found it!
So happy I found this video...I’m from Pemberton and used to go to that cinema in the 70’s,it’s been selling carpets for many yrs now..
Poole’s pies were very popular back in the day, they had such a fab reputation, but not been back to Wigan for yrs,so don’t even know if they are still there....
Pooled pies are long gone I’m afraid 😪
@ that’s such a shame 😟
Used to queue up right down the street for Poole's specials
Hi from Virginia. Edward's bakery was always my favorite place for pies. I'll be back in my hometown next week and looking forward to a nice pie. 😋
Enjoy your pie 😀
Oh my that Pepper Lane pie shop...I visited that in 2022 when I came over from Australia and passed it 2-3 times before I found it. In the 60s/early 70s I went to school in Orrell and the school bus (from Chorley) went down Pepper Lane and back then I knew every pothole on that road. Some good pies to be had on Chorley Market and the Tuesday Market has a fantastic Pork Pie stall (got one with black pudding in it). Anyway, when I returned to Australia from UK in 2022 I brought a Fray Bentos Breakfast pie with me and it was confiscated by quarantine officers...good job I ate the pork pie on the plane.
Thanks for watching and for your great pie story and a bit of pepper lane history there too! I visited Chorley market for the Chorley cakes in a previous video, but didn’t try the pies, might be worth another trip for those! Hope you find a good pie down under 👍
@@andrewemmerson Yes I watched your Chorley Cake video, great view. Luckily here close to Melbourne we have a couple of ex Chorley guys who came over 15 years or so back as backpackers to work on an uncle's farm. One was a chef and started to make UK style sausages, black puddings, haggis, pork pies etc. It is now a big thriving company...Pacdon Park..if you ever come over here you should try their pork pie.
@@hwallen9316 oh wow that sounds amazing, if I ever make it to Melbourne I’ll be sure to try those!
I wonder if they enjoyed eating it..
@@richardbowness1595 They were having difficulty with the concept of a breakfast pie and also a pie in a tin can. To be honest, when I saw it in Tesco it made me scratch my head. Anyway, I read the reviews and it seems it tastes quite awful so it was no loss. Next visit I will be getting haggis in a can.
And this is why I don’t rate Greggs. It’s just another fast food chain like McDonalds, not a proper bakery.
Very true, very true !
Heart burn heaven
Totally 😂😂😂
You greedy.........😂😂 surprised you didn't try muffin man on park road! I don't eat a lot of pies but that is my go to place 😋👌
Next time!
I’d need a lie down after all that pie! Dedication to the channel indeed 😊 interesting to watch!
You and me both! 😆
Rolling Pin bakery is the best, their cheese and onion pie is superb ❤ great video, very entertaining!
I really did like the rolling pin pie 🥧
Rolling pin is garbage now it changed hands years ago never been the same
@@carlt9265 tasted pretty good to me but I never had one from here before
Green halls potato and meat pies are the best they have a distinct pepper flavour, out of this world, had them at lunchtime of school in my teens in Prestwich Manchester and now in my retirement I get the same pie in moston Manchester need to send out my grandson to the over bottom pie shop tuely the best pie in my opinion had lasted the decades still as good today as it was 50 years ago, nice video
Yes greenhalghs are pretty good pies! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Cor blimy, how did you not end up with indeigestion?
If you’re born in Wigan, you have a good piestitution! 😂
I once tried a Butter Pie from Morrisons , baked instore at there pie shop. I had no idea what the ingredients were , just thought I'd give it a try . To my shock , it was a potato & butter filling ! I kept thinking they'd left out another ingredient by accident!!😂 as who'd want a potato pie !? Little dis I know it was popular in Lancashire!
Well, I hope you enjoyed it! 😂
Morrisons is surprisingly good for pies and pasties. They used to do a pasty called 'the tin miner'. Cornish pasty filling at one end and sweet stewed apple at the other. Two courses in one pasty. It was delicious, especially the bit in the middle as you started to transition between the two courses.
Does anyone remember Twists bakery at Lower Ince? Sadly it burned down some years ago, great pies and pasties though, it was always busy.
I don’t remember that one 🤔
Yes on Warrington rd
The long gone ‘Moss’s’ pies in Ashton in Makerfield, Wigan were the best!…I think anyone who has had one will agree!
Never tried those sadly!
Cat was like "yeah i see you I just don't care" lol
Dogs > cats
😂 true
On a side note, the Romans called Wigan Coccium 😊
I remember that 😂
pooles pies wor the best in the world....until whelan changed the recipe...the beginning of its demise.....
Didn’t know he’d changed the recipe 😪
You should have got the same sort of pie from every shop you went to score them fairly and its Greenhalgh’s not Green halls from a wiganer whos name was Greenhalgh for 21 years
There’s no rules in a pie off!
Thas not bint muffin man , mon differt bow game mon a tell thi…..
They’s reet, nee tried em!
Greenhalghs are a total rip off for everything lol
I remember getting a small barm cake sandwich from there just ham and they wanted 2.99 😅
Way too much 🫣
You said the 4th pie was a lot firmer…it would be by the time you ate it, probably cold.
Well it wasn't pie-ping hot 😂
There was a pie shop in Orrel post at the top of Coniston avenue. My father would take me there and always took along a jug, as they would give you some of the broth for free if you bought pies. I have no idea if it is still there as we left in 1967.
Sounds amazing, It would be nice to know if it was still there!
It was called the old bakehouse however it closed down and is now a pizza shop.
@@davidround8679 , that's a shame, I loved that shop, but it has been 55 years since I went there.
My Nana used to live up Winstanley Road and we were part of the Mather family ( maternal side) who lived in Billinge.
Also, it’s a bit disappointing how quiet it is. In a market town, on a Saturday, in fine weather, you would expect almost everyone in Wigan to be out enjoying pies!
Half the town is currently being rebuilt so I hope it will recover quickly when all the development is completed 👍
You missed the Muffin Man and Edwards bakery.
Thanks might check those next time!
Edwards Bakery where is that?
Where is Edwards bakery?
Mr Allan (jewellers) has retired. Not really worth going into Wigan nowadays. Very sad.
That's a shame.
TRY BALDY'S PIE WIGAN

Should have had same pie at each one or it’s a miss match on flavour
Just my own opinion though! 👍
Pimbletts family bakery heath Street Golborne
Golborne is almost Wigan so might give that one a try! 👍

Enjoyed your video. Does anyone know what happened to Pooles Pies? Funny that the best pie you rated was one not in Wigan! Saw the film Backbeat (a Beatles biopic film) in 1994 at that cinema in Pemberton. Cheers.
Pooles pies were bought out by a Leeds based bakery business years ago. Ah. Come on Standish is still Wigan! 😀 yes glad you went to pemberton cinema too!

Rolling pin chunky steak yum
Oh yeah! Sounds good!
Hi from Australia, firstly what the heck is a butter pie ??
Thought you where referring to a butter chicken but no ???
Love finding agood pue ahop and a perfact sausage roll the filling has to be the right texture and seasoning with flakey pastry not hard and dry or burnt.
this has been interesting .
Glad you enjoyed it, 😂 A butter pie is basically real butter and potatoes 👍
@andrewemmerson thank you i enjoyed the vlog.😀👍🇦🇺
If me dad had had that galloways pie he’d have called it a tater custard.
That’s a good one 😂
What was the first place called?
Gents pie shop / gents bakery
While you were in Standish,u should of gone to pepper lane bakery they are the best by far
We did that was the first one, Gents pie shop!
Whittle's used be good when Harry run it, best pie now are Hall's in Chorley, they use shortening in there pastry mmmm.
I love a good bit of shortening pastry!
Delicious but the best pie in the Wig is a Lancashire Hotpot one
I may need to do a hotpot video 😂
@@andrewemmerson For sure Buddy 😇
Never come across a butter pie in Yorkshire.
You're missing out over there on the wrong side of the Pennines! 😂
Whittles do a kebab pie only thing is the pastry is a bit heavy.

If you want the very best pies in Lancashire please try Hamlets butchers in garstang once eaten no steak pie anywhere comes close

Galloway’s small meat takes some beating. Tomlin’s meat pies are belting if ever you’re in Warrington

why would you sell crisps in a pie shop for 75p, beam me up Scotty, probably why they got a Porsche on the front.
