    Thanks for this informative video. I read where some people also have a FM radio handheld (similar to a CB radio) it's a much clearer signal. Only issue is you have to get two. One for the truck driver and one for you.
    I got the equipment. Now I need to find someone to ride along with and then to start going out on my own.

    • @herbertschwarzgruber7013
      @herbertschwarzgruber7013  3 роки тому

      Yes these radios are better but (aside from the fact that you need to give one to a trucker) if you are driving in a group of oversize loads nobody else can hear you and that could be a problem.

    • @chuckwagon1892
      @chuckwagon1892 3 роки тому +2

      The FM radio is definitely a better communication instrument BUT it is a radio that may not be used by the trucker. If the trucker uses the FM radio he will have one mounted in his truck. He will ask (or require) you to have one. So, having FM capabilities in your pilot vehicle is definitely a PLUS and might make all the difference in whether or not you work on that day. The FM REQUIRMENT should be communicated to you by your broker if you're using a broker. After you have established yourself as a pilot car owner operator you will know who uses FM and who doesn't. But FM is growing in popularity and it is not that expensive to equip your vehicle with one. GOOD IDEA TO BE FM CAPABLE!

    • @herbertschwarzgruber7013
      @herbertschwarzgruber7013  2 роки тому +1

      No sure Derricke. I never had a government contract. The military sometimes deals in oversize loads (mostly tanks) but a rarely see them requiring pilot cars. The military hires the carriers directly and the carrier will hire the pilot car if he needs one. However if there is anyone in the audience who has more data on that I'd be happy to learn about it.

    You said the amber light needs to be a "mix" between 43" and 52"... does that mean that at least 1 state requires lights to be at least 43" and at least 1 state requires the lights not to exceed 52"? I know here in Missouri lights are not required and in Kansas next door they require only 8" in diameter so 43" or more seems like a lot .. thanks for the help

    • @StumpyVanLife
      @StumpyVanLife 2 роки тому +1

      I am just getting started myself, and I am not 100% sure of this. But I think the requirement in most states is either a single 8" light , some states may be two 8 " light. Or you can use a light bar instead of two lights. Min size is 43" and maximum is 52" , most pilot drivers are just using the light bar's now. Somebody correct me if I a wrong.

      @@StumpyVanLife I looked it up, and it's only New York that has the 43" to 52" length requirement. Everywhere else appears to be either no requirement or at least 1 light being at least 8" (most states less) in diameter. So everywhere but New York one light that is 8" in diameter, or any lightbar made (because no lightbar is less than 8" in length OR diameter).

    How often are the cones actually used?

    • @Unduplicatable
      @Unduplicatable 8 місяців тому

      Use of everything (including retained cleanliness) is all dependent on skill and experience. If you never use your cones, fine, but you’re probably not learning anything, nor paying attention. Also, practice setting up triangles on your spare time, and don’t be like those lazy n00bs who set them 10 to 20 feet apart. Do it properly.

    • @herbertschwarzgruber7013
      @herbertschwarzgruber7013  8 місяців тому

      I use them about once a week. Whenever the trucker sits at a place where cones are needed (even at a truck stop or a parking place) I offer my cones and the trucker often accepts them even if he has his own. But there is also a standard use for cones and that is laid out in the pilot car certification class.

They have many advantages but I would not drive anything but a F150. Get one used. You don't need a 4 wheel drive. This is the only pick up I would trust. The biggest pain in the neck is having a car that is not reliable. Ford and Toyota are the only reliable cars in my book.

      Yes I can do a video on this to give more details. For now let me tell you that the light bar and the rack for the oversize load sign are 2 separate items. The rack has a mechanism that will hold flags and when you buy the rack you will get it with a set of 2 flats (total 4 flags - 2 as spare flags). The amazon link will only take you to the lightbar and link for the oversize load sign rack will take you to Barnes Pilot Car. I hope this helps you a bit more on this.

  • @mikel9567
    @mikel9567 3 роки тому

    I wouldn't waste time or money setting up your vehicle for all 50 states. I would concentrate on the region you are working in. Very few pilots will travel cross country. It's too expensive. Most will do hand offs to other pilots. The only ones I have seen willing to travel cross country are the ones doing super loads and that's a different certification process altogether. Your average trucking company isn't going to pay for a pilot to travel cross country with them when doing hand offs to others is much cheaper and more cost effective. They also probably aren't going to pay for your dead head miles either. As for the equipment, I think he doesn't do a proper job explaining, also all of his looks brand new. You don't need 36" traffic cones, 28" is the minimum for highway use specified by the MUTCD. You don't need flags or a stop/ slow paddle (flags for traffic control are daytime use only) since your pilot car certification doesn't include flagger certification. You are not allowed to flag or control traffic unless you have a flaggers card, and that IS a national requirement. If you have a flaggers card, and are planning on doing flagging as well; a) you better be charging for it and b) you need a whole set of different equipment, including signs. You don't need to spend the money on a lightbar, you can use mini bars or beacons. No state requires lightbars. Every state does have requirements on light output though so you have to make sure your lighting equipment complies with their requirements. You better not be buying any warning lights off of Amazon. If your a business and your buying cheap and unreliable equipment, you might as well just put up your "out of business" sign, because you won't last. I would hate to work with this guy. His accent is so thick he would be hard to understand on a radio.

    • @oldleatherstocking3185
      @oldleatherstocking3185 3 роки тому +3

      Wow, you are really spreading misinformation. You keep saying "no state requires..." so ill just talk about one state, New York state. A certified escort is authorized for flagging. In fact "The flag person can only be a certified escort driver" AND " must be equiped with a paddle reading "STOP" in white letters with red background."
      ALSO: "the REQUIRED warning light bar shall be a minimum of 43 inches and a maximum of 52 inches long, a minimum of 10 inches and a maximum...." this is all straight out of the current handbook.
      You don't know what you are talking about.

    • @StumpyVanLife
      @StumpyVanLife 2 роки тому +2

      Wrong, Washington state Pilot certification also includes flagging. And Washington pilot certification is accepted in every state that requires certification, except NY. They think they are special and do not reciprocate with any other state. But most states require that the P/evo flag traffic if the load has to stop on the side of the road , such as a breakdown.
