Magnificent. I'll tell you, I appreciate seeing how your concept of the song develops over time, and if there's a song that warrants listening, and re-listening, as well as re-evaluation of our perception of the song, Shoemaker is definitely a good candidate. I really, *really* like the concept that Shoemaker is a love song. A multi-faceted love song, love from a man to nature, love from man to his profession, love from man to mankind. I very much appreciated that you mentioned Greek mythology and similar forms of symbolism. Once you mentioned that, I felt an overwhelming sense of visual inspiration.
"If I were to make 'the night' into a character, to personify my sense of the night, how might I do so?" At this point, I don't know for sure, but I connect heavily to the Forgotten Realms depiction of "the Raven Queen", the personification of death, veiled in a simple but elegant mask, and shrouded in a long black cloak, studded with raven's feathers. Cold, quiet, but somehow comforting. I loved the idea of the speaker shifting across various perspectives, from Shoemaker himself, to the whole of humanity, to the personification of the night. And each talks back and forth to one another. The intimacy is palpable, and once you recognize the love that is evident in the song, the intimacy is simply unavoidable. That which has been revealed can never again be shrouded.
I appreciated the good laugh at the idea of cutting up "Shoemaker" into tiny stars, per Romeo and Juliet, but I found that I was suddenly reminded of a man that I feel is one of the best scientific communicators on Earth, Neil Degrasse Tyson. Considering your interest in the sciences, astronomy, etc. you may very well be familiar with him, but when I think of Shoemaker's ashes being scattered on the moon, I feel like this image is, at its' heart, the absolute *CORE* of the cosmic perspective, the same perspective that Carl Sagan assumes when he monologues about the "pale blue dot". I think that by reducing Shoemaker to his most base elements, to simple ash, and dispersing his remains on some far-flung land, we have achieved something incredible as a species. We have pierced the veil that has kept us separate from the enormity of space. As human beings, we have all been born, lived, and will likely die upon this pale blue dot that we call Earth, but by dispersing Shoemaker's ashes on the moon, we have not only placed our feet on a faraway land, but we have left one to reside there into eternity. The cosmic perspective of infinite interconnectedness, which is elaborated on by Tyson himself, speaks to both the astounding enormity of the universe as we understand it, but also our place within it. We are but a tiny crowd of hairless apes, standing upon a mote of dust, suspended within a sunbeam. And yet, we strive. Forever, we strive. We adventure. We seek. And through this act of seeking, we discover the enormity of the task that lies before us. And we carry on, all the same.

      Speechless. Again.
And here I am in the most enjoyable artistic/musical ride of my past 20 years. And I have the privilege of a dialogue with people like you? How does that all happen? When I decided three or four weeks ago to explain to my French Canadian fellows the meaning and the beauty of an underestimated style of music (symphonic metal), how is it that two Netherlanders came and visited my then 30-40 subscribers YT channel and ask me for English subtitles? From this first video, a story unfolds in front of my very eyes . The numbers are there, but more important, the quality is here. My videos open a space for dialogue; and truly I believe that I am the most privileged of all. Just thank you.

@@GuylainPrince Art, love, the human heart and soul; all these are timeless and know no boundaries such as religion, age, or nationality.
Nightwish is the medium whereby similar-minded people such as yourselves are enabled to come together in these ways. And that is Toumas gift, his power.
And we are all enriched along the way in stages: first by the original art itself, then again by the analysis of that art, then finally again in our interactions with each other in our discussion resulting from the analysis of the original art. Thanks for this wonderful explanation. I am an italian geologist researcher at university, i can tell that it is exactly like you said: we fall in love with our subject, the Earth, and although we use the scientific method to understand it and how it was formed and how it works, we (at least, i) have a deep feeling of love and respect and wonder towards it. Science is just a way, but often intuition, fed by love and enchantment, comes before any mathematic demonstration. No equation can describe what i feel when i am close to a volcanic eruption, caught by the power and beauty of nature. I think Shoemaker felt the same and i am so happy and proud that Nightwish told his story. This song makes me cry every time i listen to it, 'cause it speaks directly to my soul.

Dear Helena, I find this idea of Tuomas absolutely generous. How many artists took the time to present the scientific quest in such beautiful words and music? How many ? To my knowledge, almost none. They feel, somehow, that science is the opposite of artistic work. Not always. You and me know that there is a lot of dedication, and yes! love to give our lives or a good part of our lives to the subject of our research. And to link the quest or Shoemaker with the yearning of a Romeo for his Juliette is... I can't think of any word. Thanks for sharing.

Indeed the moon is tidally locked to the Earth. But the eternal Earthrise may even mean more. Shoemaker was buried near the South Pole of the Moon, actually in a permanently shadowed area of the Shoemaker crater. That location however means that he always sees the Earth rising just over the Moons horizon.

Magnificent analyst Guylain. I have watched all of your videos and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
I did comment on several of them but for some reason YT prevented me from posting for around two weeks.
This has to one of the most complicated Rock songs ever devised by man. From the musical arrangement/song structure, to the lyrics, to the unexpected ending, everything about it is fascinating.
I'm really curious about Tuomas writing style. I am a native English speaker, quite well read and educated but i struggle to understand exactly where his lyric style comes from. Not just in this song but throughout the Nightwish catalogue he uses the most cryptic poetic style that seems to me to be unique to him and keep in mind that his first language is Finnish not English. In the early days i just thought of it as what the UK music press used to call' Metal English' but its so much more than that at this point. 'Metal English' was the style of lyric that evolved from European bands translating their own language into English with all of the indigenous phrases and accents still visible.Kind of the flip side of the American English older bands sang in.
He is also very unusual in that he self references himself in the second/third person in a lot of songs (The Boy, The dead boy, The oceanborn). There is something of the 'Peter Pan' about him and i mean that in a good way. Definitely a very interesting character and someone i would very much like to meet in person.
Thank you once again for taking the time to tease out the threads of this song. I can tell that you enjoyed every minute of it but we still appreciate your efforts.

    • @GuylainPrince

In the '70, there was a style called "Progressive Rock". You would find there absolute gems of construction and poetry. As an example: Genesis. I have all their discography (also Yes, etc.). The five musicians of Genesis are brilliant. All of them. And even if they lost two members (Gabriel and Hackett), they were able to keep themselves at a very high level of artistry. Tony Banks is, for me, a keyboardist and composer of another dimension. I see Tuomas right behind and this is, from me, the highest tribute to Tuomas as a musician and composer. In a complex song like "Selling England by the Pound", the young Genesis already showed something exceptional. But, in terms of music, there is a summit for me in the album 'When the Lamb Lies Down'. If you want to hear other great composers/musicians, that would be the perfect start. To me, the problem of that opus is the lyrics. For a reason that escapes me, Peter Gabriel was not able to focus on something and it is too bad because the music of this album is out of this world. I can't help but compare these two albums. And here is pretty much what I think. As a composer, Tuomas, all by himself, has produced works that are not very far behind collective works considered to be the very best in rock history. I will have to give myself a bit of reflection here, but at this point, I tend to think that there is no other example of a single man - the composer and the lyricist - attaining such results. Already, this would be exceptional. But then, you have to complete this picture with two other things: his genuine admiration and celebration of the scientific contribution. In that, I don't see anyone else. And second: a coherent vision. There is a 'stance', a posture, that he has in his work, a quite consistent one: pride in the best part of what humanity can accomplish (science, art, poetry, etc.) and humility as he considers the stellar world and nature. We find through this album a clear picture of our fragility and our limitations while keeping a positive point of view on man's best side. These few elements bring Tuomas to another level to me. And - oh! - one last thing. This is something I learned two days ago: he writes very complicated crosswords as a sideline. This would explain why everything is expressed in a very creative and, sometimes, cryptic way. All in all, I am not sure if I would use the word genius, but, to me, we are getting closer with every single song I open. As you know, I still have to keep my part of the bargain. Four more songs to look into. Peace!

Thank you very much for your excellent and enlightning analysis. From the stories I read, the interviews with Tuomas I viewed and from listening the album over and over and over again I was aware of the various connections between the songs. But you have given this not just one but multiple new dimensions for me.
What I specifically like is Tuomas' reference to the night not as being dark, but being starry, sparkling and the 'start of everything'.
And I too misinterpreted Laudato Si Ad Astra as 'Praise to the stars' instead of 'Praise to you, towards the stars' which is a far more powerful meaning. Thank you for the insight!

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 роки тому +10

I truly think that Tuomas gave a very good thought about it. Being completely coherent, he would have wrote the feminine singular : in love with the Night, as being the 'Juliette' of this song. Then, the reference to the two writings would have been blurred. He was aware of that. And strictly speaking, I am not sure that he was at ease in making a very 'religious statement' in a very 'religious-like' musical environment would have been a 'faux-pas' from a publicly declared atheist. The addition of Ad Astra : "to stars, towards stars", kind of "attenuate" a all-religious-interpretation. And in the context of this song, it becomes a complete union/fusion of 'Shoemaker' with his beloved 'Night', the completion of his lifelong 'urge' to surrender himself 'to the stars'.

I tend to despise the labels we place on others and ourselves, as the narrow scope of the label reduces us by its inherent limitations. Nevertheless we're often required to apply labels to ourselves, so that we may make ourselves known to others.
I have a fascination for Nightwish. I like many bands and many genres of music, but I only have a fascination for one. However, until your analysis, I could never clearly enunciate why.
So to explain why, I will have to apply one of those restricting labels to myself, "spiritual atheist". I have always had a great reverence for the natural world and the cosmos. Thanks to your analysis, I now recognize explicitly that which I have apparently, always understood implicitly - that I share the same worldview as Nightwish.
    Thank you.
Now on to some details. The lunar probe that carried Shoemaker's ashes was deliberately crashed into the crater named after him, in the hope that the plume of debris thrown up by the impact, would reveal the presence of water. So quite literally his ashes were scattered all over the lunar surface by the impact. The urn containing his ashes and the quotation from Shakespeare, would have also been shattered. So not only was Shoemaker's ashes scattered, but so was Shakespeare's passage from Romeo and Juliet - "cut into little stars". A trivial detail, but something that adds an extra colour to the narrative.
The mares on the moon that form its 'face' were originally thought to have been seas. I wonder how much that impacted the use of 'sea' in the lyrics?
BTW, I watched your " Evangelization in a Secularized World" and I found it interesting in a positive way, that you see the Quiet Revolution as an opportunity rather than a problem.

I think that there are many spiritual atheistics, to take your words. I have two close friends among them. A philosopher and a scientist. They would connect to that song in a snap. In some games "waypoints" are particular spots that players can discover in the in-game world and that become a place where we can easily return later (by fast travel function, for example) to continue exploration. Because I did not hear you mention it and did not see it in the comments, I would like to remark two things. Shoemaker regretted deeply he was no able to become an astronaut, but he did help in training those who became 'sailors to the stars' which is the literal translation of the word astronaut. (Btw: the Russians have 'sailors to the universe', kosmonauts.) Lines like 'a sailor through aeons' and 'a ship that sailed home' and the phrase 'stellar sea' and 'guiding light' are referring to both seafaring and 'spacefaring'.
The closing two words 'ad astra' refer also to the subtitle of the last piece of music on the second cd of Human Nature.

    Bonjour Guylain
    Profonde analyse.

I have a slightly different view of two pieces, from two verses, that fit together. "We're coming to join you" and "A waypoint to the far". There are new flights to the moon being planned, as a first step towards manned missions to Mars. So we are coming to join him on the moon, but just as a first step to reach out further.

I am aware of two things, and that is the reason why I did that series in the first place : 1) English is not my mother tongue. Not the one of my fellow French citizens. We hear a lot of music, but listen very little. English songs are like a 'Noise' in the background. We don't know what the artists says and sometimes have no idea of the meaning of the song. 2) Very soon I realized that there was a large fan base with Nightwish (and certainly other bands), and their mother tongue is NOT English either. To write the subtitles - it takes more time to do that than the video themselves - is a service for a lot of people. Until now, I have received questions and thanks in a dozen languages, at least. This is something I did not have in mind when I began, but it became important very fast. And the last element, for me, it the appreciation of the poetry of Tuomas. I have a sense of his mindset, of his 'refrains' and phrase structure; that is priceless. After this album, there is NO WAY I will ever listen to Nightwish songs without paying attention to the lyrics. Ever. After I know what it talks about, I will bang my head like the others. But I want to know why.

@@GuylainPrince Thank you for putting the effort in translation. I studied French for 6 years because I wanted to understand what Mireille Mathieu was singing when I did listen to her a lot, the French singer. So listening to your french some of the language came back in mind, but that is a long time ago.
In my mind Tuomas is one of the most amazing composer's in todays world. The lyrics in his songs are so meaningful because every song he writes comes from something that touches his mind, like he said what he takes in, view from nature, a book, a picture, a movie or here the scientist story has to come out in music...that for me is amazing.

With regards to the religious-like ending, as someone not religious I simply read his version of Laudato Si as being aimed at the Night, the personification of the endless beauty of space he (Tuomas) has built up throughout the song.
Your founder stood in awe and lauded a personal god (that he percieved in those things that awed him),
Tuomas stood in awe and lauded the very thing that awed him (the night, the endlessness and beauty of space) directly.
One of the beauties of the song is that whatever your view, you as the listener get to share in the *same* awe, and laude whatever you see in it.
Any entity or absence of entity, any grand design or just the things being as they are.
It unites us despite our differences, united in our love for the night and our desire to reach for the stars.
    That to me is beautiful.

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  3 роки тому

I agree with you. Towards the stars, we can be both in awe. By the natural beauty of the infinity. For those, like me, believing in a personnal God will have an occasion the be thankfull. But bith of us will be amazed and in awe in from of the "starry vault'. "Laudato Si", even if it is adressed to a personal God, needed to be that way so that the reference to the the previous writings is clear enough. It is a wonderful peace of art.

Next step was Nightwish...what a journey that in itself was!!! And unlike you, I was never 'in to' metal so you can imagine how they literally rocked my world...☺ I fell in love all over again and explored all their Floor-material (So sorry if I offend anyone, but Tarja and Anette are both very skilled artists, but they don't "kick me in the stomach while caressing my cheek" like Floor does...) than UA-cam led me to you, a man of God (who reminds me so much of my late uncle who was a Frère in the order of the Rerumtoristen) and than Tuomas comes up with this incredible album Human :||: Nature which is now even better thanks to you taking me by the hand on this awesome journey... my point; my life and even my way of looking at things in general is so much richer than at the start of this quest... Thank you Floor, thank you Nightwish, and thank you Sir... you together may have saved the world... because I was in a place where I wasn't planning on 'burning my rope'. Now I did. And as some say; saving one person is saving the world... please accept my gratitude and respect. Good night.🤍

I am impressed. Your analysis based on a solid interpretation of the words and verses and the coherence between them and even to the other songs produces conclusions which I fully endorse. First there is the conclusion that the song reveals a love relationship between Shoemaker (humanity) and the night (the stars, the universe) and second that it encourages everybody (mankind) to further explore these relationship, i.e. the stars (universe). This could as you conclude not only be a matter of inspiration. It could also and I agree again with you have a spiritual connotation. To this I like to add that especially the final laudatio si part by Floor produces a 'Stimmung' , which may be described as heaven. And if this is heaven, I like to be there!

i really like your deep analysis of this one.
What comes to my mind also looking at the greatest show on earth before this album and general knowledge is that this album is almost a guide or a call to do whats right.
To care for nature, to turn away from the "noise" to focus on whats out there, to care for nature to survive now as a species. But also with this one to survive in the long run to leave the Earth behind (like shoemaker), but also as in shakespears lines.. to leave behind the sun.. to find a home on another planet among the stars..
I see this as hope, but it also seems to me that tuomas isnt always that faithful in us (or maybe i am no), as we can hear in "the greatest show on earth" in the line "enter ratkind" that our time is about past on this planet. and Procession almost sounds like a funeral march for humanity. I look forward to what you think of that song.

I loved this analysis. But also, I just loved hearing you speak. I can only understand a little French. You see, I'm from Louisiana, and my parents both spoke French before they learned English. I heard it frequently in my home and especially when my parents spoke to older relatives. I can only understand a little when I hear French people speak because the accent is so different and because they speak so fast. Your language sounds a lot more like Cajun French, and it was nice to hear. I still needed the subtitles, but it makes me want to learn French better. I think the "cut in little stars" could also refer to humans (and pretty much everything else) being composed of atoms that mostly originate from supernovas a.k.a. dying stars. When a human has died and you have his or her ashes in an urn, you literally have ashes of stars in that urn. Spreading the ashes to the moon would spread part of many stars cut into little parts over the moon surface, literally.

    • @GuylainPrince

I think "hope revived for a lifetime" may be in reference to the long gap after the time of the Apollo moon landings, a gap long enough to contain most of a lifetime. Shoemaker's ashes were launched in 1999. By then, it had already been such a long time that some hope was being lost. We're so close to returning, but it will be around 25 years past Shoemaker's arrival, and 55 years after the first manned landings. There's been a strong sense that humanity has been "splashing in the shallows" since the Apollo program, doing things close to earth. Only in the last decade has interest in going past low orbit surged again. This next lifetime will include Mars. I wonder whose ashes Mr Musk will bring there first.
I can definitely sense a message of "We're Coming, O Night. Slowly, painfully, barely within our grasp as we mature, but we will be out there." Myriad endings for humanity among the stars, not just the stars themselves.
(I keep editing this message, I keep thinking of more things!)
If we include the message of human expansion into the universe into this analysis, we get a very respectful fusion of two more common messages: one of a sort of practical need to expand; themes of disassembling planets for raw material, space as our birthright. Another of the spirituality of the eternal vastness of space, our insignificance in comparison, the pale blue dot. I don't see those messages combined very often.

Apologies if this is lengthy commentary, but... Early this morning, a friend of mine had sent me your analysis of the song, Music. It's now 5pm where I live, I've watched all the videos prior to this one, and will obviously continue until the most recent upload, and plan to make it to the premiere you've set. I'm leaving a comment here, (though initially I was going to wait) as something you'd mentioned in your Reaction to Shoemaker caught my interest. (I'll get to that in a moment).
A quick background: I was raised Pentecostal, and my fiance has converted to Catholicism in recent months. He has been trying to get me to convert, he prays the rosary every night and had begun to do it more than once in a day.
One day, around Christmas time, he bought me the tiniest statuette of St Francis of Assisi, because I'm quite an environmentalist who loves nature and animals. I cherish this little statuette in quite a different way than someone who is Catholic (at the moment, Anyway). I tend to carry it around with me, and have even gone so far as to have it blessed by a priest at the parish my fiance attends. I have gone from calling myself Pentecostal to simply saying I'm Protestant.
Going back to the point I mentioned I'd get to, you stated quite excitedly at the end of the Shoemaker Reaction that "Laudato Si" was the poem of St Francis. This struck me, because I have been praying for an obvious sign of where to go as far as "denomination", what to believe or where I need to be as far as doctrine and church is concerned. Like I said, I grew up Pentecostal. Often I am a very "In need of a burning bush!" type of person, because I overthink things quite a bit.
That said, who knew being a fan of Nightwish would lead me to your channel, and give me quite an unexpected answer, as well as incredibly interesting lyrical analysis of my favorite band, by such a warm and wonderful person such as yourself.
Stating all that simply to say thank you seems a little long winded, but I felt it was important to bring up.
    ♥️

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 роки тому +1

That is extremely kind of you. And if that makes you feel at home, I know a lot of protestant Christians having a deep knowledge and connection with St. Francis. I personally know two Pentecosts, one Anglican, one Lutheran and few Mennonites. There is a proximity of the Christians from the Reform and the Poor of Assisi. You could be a Pentecost and enjoy this "spiritual friendship". As for having a sign and searching for an answer for yourself, be patient and be open. Surprises are everywhere. And often where we don't expect them. Take your time. United in prayer.

@@GuylainPrince I greatly appreciate your considerate reply! and Actually, I feel like I might study more within Catholicism. Perhaps even Franciscan (as was actually recently suggested to me by my fiance)
That's partially why I was immediately intrigued by the initial video I watched that my friend linked. Maybe it's the path I'm meant to stay on. I do indeed feel a connection to St. Francis of Assisi, and have decided to do more intense research than Maybe I had done prior.
Thank you again, very much! Words cannot express my gratitude (both to you and the Lord 🙏)
I'd also love to know if you have more content aside from these reactions/analysis, or some recommendations that I can read or study.

He put these songs in a certain order, creating a 'narrative thread' between them. This work is ours to receive, in our hearts and in our minds. To build sense of it. In a way, it is like a child. Through you, he enters the world. But one day, he's totally on his own. The text has a life by itself once it is published. Peace!

Maybe the wolf in the beginning of Music is also related to the works of Robin Hobb. Tuomas has said he admires her work. Especially the Farseer trilogy. I did not listen to the album since it came out and was waiting for reviewers to go with it. I was only up to "Noise" when I came across your channel and your "Shoemaker" reaction/analysis. Let me just express this before pointing out one important missing reference from the lyrics: I'm not going to listen to the rest of the album before your reactions. I'm going to explore it "with your guiding light" :) You've literally set a new bar in the song analysis genre. I'm now only looking up for people who do deep analysis of lyrics, background stories, musical compositions etc.
"You are home now, outward urge
    As with every dreaming creature"
This is most possibly a reference to the novel "The Outward Urge". The "as with every dreaming creature" in the follow up verse may be a salute to the sci-fi dreamers/writers as much it is clearly stating the mankind. Tuomas is definitely a hard sci-fi reader (as I am) and he did reference to other writers from the hard sci-fi era before. "Gaia" in "Storytime" was a clear reference to Asimov (at least for me) where most people rightfully also took it as the Greek Goddess. Also "Pan" from this album had a hint/reference to Arthur Clarke's "2001".
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outward_Urge
Also take a look to the poem "The Jolly Company" which is quoted in the novel (mentioned in the "Plot Summary" of the above Wikipedia page).
(Btw I think that Tuomas also references to many poems in his lyrics all over his songs. "Storytime" has a wonderful reference to a poem also related to the song's theme in the following verse of the "Gaia" verse: "Took a journey into a child-man's heart". Look up for the poem "My Heart Leaps Up" from William Wordsworth.)
    The Jolly Company
    The stars, a jolly company,
    I envied, straying late and lonely;
    And cried upon their revelry:
    "O white companionship! You only
In love, in faith unbroken dwell,
    Friends radiant and inseparable!"
Light-heart and glad they seemed to me
    And merry comrades (EVEN SO
GOD OUT OF HEAVEN MAY LAUGH TO SEE
THE HAPPY CROWDS; AND NEVER KNOW
THAT IN HIS LONE OBSCURE DISTRESS
    EACH WALKETH IN A WILDERNESS).
    But I, remembering, pitied well
And loved them, who, with lonely light,
    In empty infinite spaces dwell,
    Disconsolate. For, all the night,
I heard the thin gnat-voices cry,
Star to faint star, across the sky.

Well, let me send you back the nice words. The very point of this series is to begin a dialogue with people like you. I am fully aware that Tuomas refers to other writers in his work, and this is a area where the help of people like you help me in return. You probably noticed that I always submit my thoughts as 'suggestions' : 'this is my impression, that is what I understand'. As I read your comments, I have a new understanding of the lyrics. You help me with the references, of other universes I am not familiar with, and maybe I can help you with the 'use' of the reference in that particular text. To be quoted here, by Tuomas, means something as well. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Be aware that I will probably redo the video of Pan. I decided after Shoemaker to take the necessary time in shooting my videos. I felt 'rushed' through it, not taking the time to explain everything I found in the song. The end result is : while having the out-most respect for Tuomas and the band, I was not able to convey that in the presentation. Consider my present video on 'Pan' as 'second thoughts on Harvest' and 'rough copy' of what is to come. Come back, any time!

Thank you for this. This is exactly what a preacher should be doing. I've never been religious, but over the years I've come to appreciate that much of religious practice is traditions that humanity has baked into its social fabric for a reason. And the fabric is unravelling. And I can only blame incompetent preachers for that fact.
I wish my local preacher made me look upon him with reverance, warmth, respect, gratitude, and thankfulness. But they never have. I've never been religious, but I've been to church against my will a few times during the course of my life, and I've never been impressed. But I might not have been open to being impressed either. Perhaps I'm ladening them with all the burden, when some of it has rested with me as well. I guess I'll never know, unless I go willingly.
But I won't. I would not go to find religion, I would go to find hope that the community can be saved. And there's no hope for that any more, there's no point in seeing if the local preacher is up to the task. He can't win.

I am different because I had a very "scientific" mindset coupled with an artistitic interest/tast. From 13-24, I was a drummer. In my 30s, I played in a band as a bassman. Surely Tuomas is a composer to weave the right input to a song, to make it spectacular!! great analyse, especially the Laudato Si part, i learned csomething there, , Tuomas is a atheist, meaning he do not belive in a certain god, neither denying that there could be a god, and i do think he belives in something still, but he is clearly more drawn to science and the universal power, then a specific god, he is beliving in Pan maybe..lol

    • @Pitchblackbones
      @Pitchblackbones 4 роки тому +1

I agree, though I'd like to try to add to your idea, if I could. You're certainly correct that Tuomas himself is an atheist, but with that being said; he is not immune to transcendental awe. Frankly, this fantastic sensation of almost "universal connectedness" shows up *quite* frequently in recent albums. Most notably in "greatest show on earth", but there are many, many other examples. This is a concept that has been around for well over 100 years. It is suspected that many of the "founding fathers" of the United States held a similar perspective. (Obviously in the 1700's, it was not politically safe to be an outspoken atheist, especially if that person had aspirations of power. So instead, many of these scientific and political leaders (such as Benjamin Franklin, would declare that they were "deists" (I believe). These people found the sublime, the transcendent, in nature. This relates back to "storytime", which almost quotes their perspective down to the very word:
"What's God if not the spark that started life
      Smile of a stranger
      Sweet music, starry skies
Wonder, mystery, wherever my road goes
Early wake-ups in a moving home
Scent of fresh-mown grass in the morning sun
Open theme park gates waiting for"
These are the simple pleasures in the secular world that Tuomas calls "God". The transcendant power that speaks to our souls and creates connection across cultures, across space, across time itself. It's kind of like the coy smile of the Mona Lisa, it pulls us in, it entices viewers, it leaves them entranced. Even after 517 years. That is a uniquely "human" connection on a core, elemental level.
Perhaps, if there is something that Tuomas believes in; one could describe that he believes in humanity, in nature, and in the communion between the two. It is definitely more based in science and the tactile world, but he seems to meditate quite frequently on Humanity and its' place within the world (and universe).

I might be mistaken, but here is what I think. Tuomas understands and appreciates the 'narratives' of the believers, but as the product of the human mind. Creativity and imagination at work to bring meaning in the world. When these beautiful stories are used for domination and control purposes, then, he becomes extremely critical. Tuomas has a spiritual vision, his work shows that very clearly, but spiritual here means: bringing meaning and inspiration. I don't know the man, but from what I can get of his works, great religious men as "being inspiring and meaningful" (Luther King, or Gandhi, or Jesus, for that matter), he would appreciate them. And he doesn't need to be Hindu to appreciate Ghandi. That is how I read the ending of Shoemaker. The two works (the poem Laudato Si and the pope's writing of the same name) are recognized by Tuomas as inspiring writing. Maybe he appreciates those persons as well and sees them as 'kindred spirits'. The remarkable thing, for me, is that he leaves us with an open space for everyone to enjoy. Regardless of their personal beliefs.

Now I agree with you wholly. I get the lyrics just about same. Only question is "Laudato Si" Do you think that Tuomas knows that it refers heavily to St Francis and Pope Francis and their writings. If so this song can easily be interpreted as a religious one. And this is really interesting, because the orchestration there has also a traditional church style (as you mentioned). Here in Finland we have a very famous phrase "Metsä on suomalaisen kirkko = Forest is a Finns Church" , meaning that the Nature has very deep spiritual or even religious meaning to us. Which at least I can agree totally. Thank you for your efforts here.

The writing of Pope Francis refers to nature as 'the greatest cathedral'. I prefer, to respect Tuomas; let's say a spiritual ending that leaves space for everyone to experience 'awe' in front of of the starry night. For the religious men, there is an added connection with an infinite Goodness behind all of this.

Guylain Prince Yes yes, but did he know the references? If so, some of us might think that he's more religious than he admits or he's just flirting with the religion.

I know very well St. Francis' poem; and I made one full year of radio programs on the Encyclical 'Laudato Si'. I think we can say that I know about them, yes. I agree on one point : I believe that Tuomas discovered a document from Christians/Catholicis and it came as a surprise to him, in a good way, and I think that it fed his vision in the creation process of this album. I don't think that he changed his mind about faith and religion, but I think he found new allies that he did not expect to have. The open conclusion of Shoemaker, from my point of view, is 'with our different faiths and points of view', let us all be in 'awe' in front of the cosmos, in front of nature. That is how far I would go; it's a matter of respect for his own beliefs. Does that make sense to you?

@@pekkakarppinen1608 I still have to go through the last songs of the album. And to make a general appreciation. I cannot answer for Tuomas on that, but I can say, in all honesty, that his music find a very dear place in my Franciscan heart at this moment.

Bonjour !

And it's exactly this close reading which has led me to one question I'd like to submit to your kind attention here. I know I'm more than two years late to the party so to speak, but that's mere "earth time" ;)
Alors.. au travail! The thing that refused to leave my mind is this: suppose Tuomas' understanding of the cosmological underpinnings of "Shoemaker" turned out to be in error.. Would that change things, perception wise?
Because here's the thing I'd like you to consider. In the Earth-Moon system, the Moon is phase-locked with Earth. That is the reason why on Earth, we always see the same face of the Moon, right? So logically, Earth as viewed from the surface of the Moon would appear to be suspended in the lunar sky, motionless. To my - admittedly limited - understanding, that would mean: no "earthrise". If Shoemaker's remains had been in perpetual lunar orbit, then yes. Shoemaker however, buried on the Moon's surface as he is, would at no time witness any earthrise.
Since the thought of "eternal earthrise" is such a powerful and evocative one in this song, my first reaction was that this alternative understanding of earth in motionless suspension must have some kind of impact upon the meaning of Shoemaker. I could be wrong of course bcz "poetic license" and so on. That's why I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
Chances are, this could be nothing and I'm simply mistaken in my understanding of the cosmology involved here. Could also be that others have pointed to this a million times without me knowing abt it. So let me end this rant by telling you, again, how much I've appreciated your journey through our Human Nature.
Cheers from Amsterdam! Et au revoir!

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  Рік тому +1

well, that is very interesting. Now, is the "earth rise" is the earth rising on the horizon of the moon, or the sun apprearing and disappearing on the surface of the earth. But as you say, the question is also : where is the info from sciences and where begins the poet. You got it right. There might be mistakes, but the general idea is very, very good.

    • @BrendonChase_2015
      @BrendonChase_2015 Рік тому

@@GuylainPrince Yes, option nr1 would be the analogy that I figured Tuomas is getting at. Earth orbits the Sun, so there's our sunrise. By way of analogy: Moon adopts the role of the Earth as the orbiting object and Earth stars as the "Sun", so therefore: Earthrise. And yes, the general idea is what really counts in the end and it is truly magnificent as a poetic expression.
It just had me wondering how Tuomas would respond, since originally he wanted to become a scientist himself. Thank you for your kind answer. Merci bien! Cheers from Amsterdam.

Bravo !

Follow me, because simplicity starts with silence
    Then, Nightwish sang:
Silence is no longer an option neither is it a solution
There must be more beyond eternity
Emptiness does not cling with emptiness,
Love does not know less or more but only all.
From the earth womb to the moon grave
such a long path, such a long dream
You would have been an astronaut, but became a geologist,
You shape your life with the flow of your destiny.
    Life can be so unpredictable!
I feel overwhelmed and I am confused,
    I need answers, not questions.
Am I a rebel without a reason, or simply a dreamer?
The voice in my head said:
Reconciliation is possible between peace and war, good and evil
Follow your instinct, listen to the your inner child
Wrap yourself in the beauty of life,
go with the flow of a river of love,
Into music, poetry and all the wonders of the world
Gaze at the moon, understand the wind's planetary message
Witness the passage of the time, but don't fall asleep, stay awake!
Surrender your thinking to your spirit, fly light and high
to the highest level of evolution and clear up the dark clouds
    that block your mind.

Thank you so much for this in depth analysis. Since English is not my native language, I tend to miss the meaning of the words sometimes. I would like to share my thoughts on verse 3 too.
"We all wait the due night" may refer to (awaiting) death, when we, just like Shoemaker, can join the stars, the universe. "Beauty is worth the hurting". The hurting may refers to earthly, secular life. Tuomas acknowledges that life can be tedious for some, also in How's the Heart ("cut the rope", "dull the blade") and of course in the Poet and the Pendulum, where Tuomas declared himself dead. So, while life may be hard, it is worth while, because after life, we ascend to the stars (or heaven, if you will).

Right, I really don't know why I feel the need to start typing this when I'm just 6:42 into your second try. Maybe it has to do with my understanding, of lack of thereof, what music is. In essence music is sound. From the moment we were born, and as science tells us even before that, though most can't recall it, we are inundated with it. Only when we were told sounds translate to feeling something.
I understand your desire to 'understand' something, just, I wonder you go about it backward. I am one who likes music within the first 5 minutes if it is 'to my liking' or not. That is not to say I won't listen to it, but it does set up an expectation. To me that is instinctively defined by what I have learned in 62 years of my life (actually 12 days shy of 62).
When I say backward I really mean you already have a somewhat clear picture of what to expect. Your focus is on the text, not on the music. For instance, only when I heard the Romeo and Juliet part I knew the subject was Gene Shoemaker for a fact. Those who have not heard of him might still think it has to do with one who makes shoes, a cobbler.
I honestly don't know what I'm telling. Just that I needed to react, music is feeling first, text secondary.
    Addendum
Basically you came to the same conclusion, I just listened to the whole album about 16 times. And still I discover new parts in the instrumental disk.

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 роки тому +2

Maybe. I understand what you are telling me. I wrote about 40 songs, and it happened to me only once : music came before the words. I had something to say, the words (even a raw version of it) help me to build a musical environment that will convey the content of it. You made an instant connection with Romeo and Shoemaker. Well, I did not. The need for me was to let the lyrics dance in my heart, with or without the music. You have a poetic mind, together with the scientific reason. You are a very lucky man. I am rather slow with these things. Understanding, especially poetry, comes from giving a poem some space within myself. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it !

@@GuylainPrince Maybe some backstory of me might help somewhat. I was raised in a Catholic environment, my grandmother received weekly visits, mostly on weekend days, from a Franciscan friar Innocentius in Tilburg (NL). From him I learned to look, as he called it, 'beyond the words' and feel what is said. Religious I'm not, in the sense of a named religion. I simply couldn't fathom why people believe in ghosts, the natural order is death. One dies sooner, others later. What we do, and the way we act, makes the world a better place. I understand why religion was necessary, explaining what you can't understand is translated into stories. A bit like, if you eat pig meat, you have a greater chance of death. Thus, don't eat the pig.
In today's world religion is maybe the greatest threat for our species. Wars have started over who is 'right' or 'wrong'. I can't understand people's motivation to tell 'sorry, the globe theory is wrong, the earth is flat'. It is the confusing stance of all religions, on the one hand accepting medical advances but using the same thing to hinder progress. A pope telling the masses it is 'forbidden' to use a condom should be indicted for murder.
I won't say mankind is doomed, just that chances of survival get less sure by the minute. Some 2020 years ago there was a hippy preaching, it is said he had a following. In those days there was no mass communication, we told stories. Today's stories tell a harder tale, one that either is going haunt us till eternity or save us from ourselves.
Sorry, didn't mean to fly off the handle, at the same time I stand by what I said. I typed it, and didn't make a copy. You can delete If you want.

      @GuylainPrince  4 роки тому +3

Delete it ?!? Why would I delete when you speak your mind? We all have a history; that makes us who we are. We've been hurt in our past; and we will be. That also is part of life. Trying to make sense of what happens to us is essential. No, don't worry, I have heard and seen much worst. I worked in maximum-security prisons, among the people of all conditions. To listen attentively to one's story makes sense, completely. Whatever it might be. Peace.

This analysis was just wonderful. And I am not religious myself - from what I know of Tuomas, I suspect my world view aligns well with his. But I do appreciate the religiosity of people like you - people that express their religiosity in such passion and love for the natural world. That is something that you share with Tuomas, I think. He is a formidable poet and composer.
It may not be something to analyse as it is primarily an instrumental piece, but the second cd of this album is beautiful.
