Ibusuki, located on the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, is renowned for its unique geothermal activity due to being in a volcanic region. Additionally, Ibusuki is recognized for its picturesque coastal scenery, including the beautiful Kinko Bay. Shizuka explores all of this and more on this byFood adventure!
Our first stop is Daimaru Katsuobushi Factory, where Shizuka goes behind the scenes of katsuobushi production. Katsuobushi is dried and fermented skipjack tuna, which is a fundamental ingredient in washoku (Japanese cuisine) known for its intense umami flavor. Shizuka runs us through the production cycle (processing, cleaning, freezing, drying, smoking, fermenting, and drying) before getting in on the action! She bravely enters a minus thirty (and then a minus fifty) katsuobushi freezer. After this, she defrosts outside and tries fresh katsuobushi and a healthy regional soup dish called cha bushi.
Next, Shizuka visits and experiences one of Ibusuki’s top claims to fame; natural hot sand baths! Ibusuki has the only natural sand baths in the world, making it a popular destination for domestic and overseas travelers looking for rejuvenation.
After brushing off the sand, it’s time for lunch! Ibusuki has geothermal steam areas, which are used as public cooking areas. Shizuka steams eggs, potato, and okra for lunch before moving on to the day's final stop; a somen noodle restaurant of a different kind. Tosenkyo Somen Nagashi is a somen noodle restaurant that uses fresh spring water from a nearby gorge. Typically, nagashi somen noodles flow down a bamboo chute, but at this restaurant, they flow in a circular motion in the middle of your table.

One off my favorite place in Japan. We try to go there whenever we can. After being there several times I can't get enough of it. Ibusuki onsen and the other things from the video are just some of the original aspects of Kagoshima you can find only here. I must add the Jumbo Mochi the Kurobuta pork and the place where you can find the Shiro Kuma shop exactly in Kagoshima city where they serve the biggest shaved ice in Japan with countless toppings. Kagoshima city has free dolphin show almost every day and the view of the volcano is priceless. The weather is very mild during the fall and winter and no so many foreigners actually are visiting the area so it's kind of magical. There are other unique things but I have spoiled enough. Lol

Just returned from a trip to SE Asia. There was a BOILING hot spring in Chiang Rai, Thailand. It was so hot there were warning signs posted on ropes five feet away from the edge warning not to place any body parts into the water! Employees were boiling eggs for sale in long-handled baskets. You could choose 1 minute or 2 minute eggs. Interestingly, there was no safety grid/net over the water...just the signs.

Ibusuki is great - it's kind of a forlorn and nostalgic tourist town, maybe already a bit past its prime days of former glory - at least that's the Impression I got in the off-season. Getting out of the sand sauna and ridding yourself of all that surprisingly heavy wet sand feels like being reborn! Would highly recommend strolling to Chiringashima at low tide, or enjoying the view up from Uomidake. And if you wanna go for a sidetrip, the Kagoshima flower park is nice, and while I didn't make it all that way, Cape Nagasakibana and the Ryugu shrine are two more POI around the corner.

Looks like we now have visible proof Shizuka is the hottest TV presenter in Japan because apparently even when standing in a freezer full of katsuobushi at minus 50 dressed in summer clothing, she laughs away the cold creating a geothermal incident of her own as her incredible body temperature starts to cook the tuna and the fire department are called in to hose her down!
