The 'turnaround' progression is ubiquitous with Jazz music. Whether you pass one every chorus, or you play one every two bars, learning how to walk the turnaround more creatively will make you a better bassist. Here are 10 strategies for playing over turnarounds (with music for each example) and 3 tips to maximize your lines in the 1-6-2-5 concept. Use these examples as a springboard to discover YOUR OWN lines over the jazz turnaround!

Anybody catch that big fat 'F' natural I played @5:37? I know that the music says 'F#', but either note will work with this concept in mind. I just flubbed it. Thanks to zsolt homoki for catching that one!
Yep, that one just caught me! Great I vi ii V variations to add to my bag. Thank you, Paul.
There is not a single better teacher on here. My favorite yiutube channel
I don't "officially" play bass but I do have a phantasy of playing it, because it's just a perfect instrument, I love deeply Paul Chambers and Mingus, and Ray Brown, and so on
I love your classes
Ahhh...Mr. P.C. His music will last forever. His inspiration is still felt long after his passing. The world is a much better place because of what he brought to it. He was definitely one of a kind. For this fledgling bass player back in the 70s, his influence was spell binding.
Break it down! There it is, efficiency and clarity.
The usual high level of instruction here...in less than 10 minutes! Thank you!
I'm not even a bassist but I got a lot out of this. Terrific!
Great video Paul! My wife bought me an upright bass in 1998 for our 14th wedding anniversary. Nearly 25 years later, I still haven't scratched the surface in learning this beautiful instrument. I can walk fairly well, but your 10 types of turnarounds was an eye opener. I definitely know what I'm going to practice all month! Thanks again!
Brilliant lesson- wasted years on roots and half tone from above or below approach notes only on Rhythm changes- where was this video years back!!
This channel puts lighting bolts of musical wisdom into my skull. The real stuff here. Well done!
Amazing stuff, this channel is pure gold for Jazz/Groove
THIS is pure gold... I just figured out the chord progression of a song I've been writing. Based entirely on this demonstration (so well explained)
Great lesson👍
Holly shit, thank you so much. I've felt stuck in my turn around phrases lately, will 100% be shedding this stuff.
excellent video sir! Thank you for taking the time to share this with the world.
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Thanks for such useful information, my practice starts right now!
Thumbnail is on point. Nice and slow exercise. Thanks!

Parabéns pelas aulas...Obrigado.
Thanks Paul
Incredible teaching my first lesson at Berkelee
Learn to walk with all those changes and then combine them and then do them long enough that you can improvise of each one what is your voice
I remember way back having no knowledge about jazz theory, after listening to jazz, especially Count Basie, these turnarounds used to be stuck in my head all day. Peculiar how the only thing I remember afterwards was that turnaround in the bass
Gold.
New to your lessons but already a fan and follower.
Good stuff!
Great lesson, Paul. Thank you!
I am grateful for this whole series! another very helpful video. A good straight ahead tune to pair with these exercises is Walk, Don't Run by Shorty Rogers. All turns all the time!
Super useful and clear well done 👏
Wow...amazing. Great video.
Lots of good info, my teacher has had me doing 2-5-1s using 3rds but I’d like to try some of these others. BTW, cool shirt! My brother lives in Pittsburgh
Really appreciate your teaching style and deliberateness! Subscribed!
As always great lesson, love the use of the open strings to facilitate movement around the fingerboard.Keep it up mate!
Thanks for posting. I’ve been focusing on really trying to improve my walking skills. Going through Ed Freidland’s book.
It takes a lot of concentration for me. Takin’ it slow and steady. 🎶
that's the way to do it. "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast"... meaning do it slow to get the hand motion comfortable and correct, the notes in tune and all that. Then, if and when you speed it up, you're not thinking about the basic stuff, you're just playing it naturally.
*Awesome!!! I love it so much, that it's now a part of my warm-up routine each day. ***MUCH APPRECIATED - Bass in 5ths - Rob
Paul.....any chance you can do some more "technical" videos like this one or the Diatonic ex? They are BOTH really strong material.....use them everyday in warm-ups. Thanks for all you DO for the 251 community!!!
thanks for this
0:45 Days of Wine and Roses! 😛🥸
Nice, now a video on soloing over these turnarounds?
Paul man I love your work! Thank you.
when i think of the turnaround, i think of the song "turn the beat around".
And any advice when you get lost on misterious and ethereal open turnarounds? What do you play if you are trying to understand an improvised an unexpected turnaround?? II-V-I or I-VI-II-V-I, or III-VI-II-V-I, stop playing and listening to the piano does not seem to be a good idea...
Can you share this lesson on Tik Tok Jazz Bass channel
