Side mount garage door openers have several advantages over overhead mount openers:
    1. More Ceiling Space: Side mount garage door openers are mounted on the wall beside the garage door, which frees up the ceiling space above the garage door. This is particularly useful for garages with limited overhead space or for people who want to use the space above their garage for storage.
    2. Easy Installation: Side mount garage door openers are easier to install than overhead mount openers. With an overhead mount opener, you need to install a ceiling bracket and then mount the opener to the ceiling. With a side mount opener, you only need to mount the opener to the wall.
    3. Quiet Operation: Side mount garage door openers operate much more quietly than overhead mount openers. The motor of a side mount opener is typically located beside the garage door, which reduces the amount of noise that is transmitted through the ceiling and into the house.
    4. Better Security: Side mount garage door openers offer better security than overhead mount openers. The motor of a side mount opener is located inside the garage, which makes it more difficult for burglars to tamper with or disable the opener.
    5. Greater Compatibility: Side mount garage door openers are compatible with a wider range of garage door types and sizes than overhead mount openers. This is because the side mount opener is attached to the wall beside the door, rather than to the ceiling above the door.

I know that they're designed to do that as a failsafe but I do like the look and the operation. These openers are a bit more secure than a traditional drawbar opener for the simple fact that you can't stick a coat hanger up through the top of the door and yank on the emergency release . Side mount ALL day. I've ruined multiple garage doors from them being froze to the ground and pulling from center bends them. Side mounts lift from the side where it's much stronger. Way more secure, cleaner look, much quieter, more ceiling storage. I've had one for 5 years in Minnesota with zero problems. Has worked every time unlike my overheads.

Overhead isn’t garbage and you still have the tracks even with the wall mount, so you’re only cleaning up the ceiling area a little bit. Eliminate the tracks with a wall mount and you’ll have my attention.

You can only use jackshaft openers with torsion springs. This is not what a lot of people have. Short of doing a conversion to ez-set or standard torsion, these can’t be used. You also run into issues of low headroom. LHR and jackshaft openers require pusher springs to work and will usually void an openers warranty because they’re not recommended to use with LHR.

  • @Jangalang923

They are called jackshaft operators and they are better than the trolley operator that is mounted to the ceiling.
It also eliminates the possibility of the chain bracket being ripped from the top panel.

I'm a garage door guy. If a customer requests to have a sidemount installed to replace their trolley opener, I ask why and try to talk them out of it. If it's a new install with high lift, full vertical or follow the pitch track, a sidemount is needed and works great. With standard radius track, they have a tendency to throw a cable. The door needs to work great and be lubed regularly with a sidemount with 12" or 15" track. I prefer Genies over the Liftmaster. I've installed lots of both brands and have had way too many issues with Liftmaster side mounts.

I received a Genie side mount for fathers day.
Something over $400 on Amazon. Genie had the better reviews.
Installed it myself. It’s creepy quiet.
The best feature is the bluetooth LED light.
I positioned it in line with my drivers side mirror on the back wall of the garage. So I can back into a shadowed garage. It just plugs it in. No control wire to run.

Jack shafts are twice the money, twice the noise, and twice the trouble. That 801 operator you show is the most trouble free op we install. Salesmen on commission love them. Someone else has to fix them. I could be wrong though, we've only been doing this for 60 years.

The overhead mount lifts are pretty much bulletproof and can be fixed or replaced by any homeowner with some simple hand tools. 👍🏽

I would add a wall mount in a bay where a lift is going, but no need for most people due to the cost. If your traditional ceiling mount unit is under a bedroom you can easily swap out with a belt drive system and have virtually no vibration or noise.
