Hiking One of the Steepest Roads in the World - Waipio Valley Road in Hawaii

- We hiked Waipio Valley Road located on the Big Island, Hawaii. It's one of the steepest roads in the world! More pics: roamtheworld.on...
Holy sh!t, that road is steep!!! Bring a lot of water, since there's no way that pathetic rental is going to make it down and back up again. Don't let the pavement fool you -- this Big Island hike is short but strenuous.
Seriously, at one point the road into Waipi'o Valley ascends 800 feet in just over half a mile, topping out at a grade of roughly 40%. That's crazy steep, and enough to wear out your calves going down. Don't get me started on the trip back up -- as you can see in the video, the hill pretty much kicked my ass.
Waipi'o Valley is majestic and beautiful, and its worth making the trip just to check out the overlook. The valley is about a mile wide and six miles deep, and filled with lush green vegetation, waterfalls and taro fields. The site also has an interesting history, having been home to many old Hawaiian kings and at one point it was wiped out by a tsunami. Today, there are only a few dozen residents -- most of the land is private property, so be respectful and stick to the path leading to the beach.
If you do hike down the insanely steep road, make a sharp right at the bottom onto a (muddy) dirt lane and follow it out towards the ocean. After a half a mile or so, you'll come upon the rocky shore and one of the Big Island's famous black sand beaches. Head to the left to find a small river running out into the ocean -- a great place to hang out and have a picnic lunch. You can also head right along the rocky shore, and if it's been rainy you'll find a nice waterfall running down a cliff into the sea.

I trained for 6 months and then went to Hawaii and rode my bicycle around Oahu
and then the Big Island.
I came to the park at the top of this and looked down
and decided not to try it,
not knowing it was tied for the steepest road.
The view was great but it was so vast it was hard to comprehend the scale
until
a helicopter came into the valley.
It looked like a tiny dot coming into the valley.
I'm glad I did it then instead of putting it on a bucket list -
my bucket could not make it down and up that hill now !
I did ride up to volcano national park -
what a ride
and coming down -
coasting for 2 hours while looking at the town below
and out across the Pacific was awesome.
How much time would you recommend in total for hiking both ways and enjoying the bottom?
The jagged rocks trying to reach that waterfall are the least of the issues. A rogue wave could drag you out to sea. Lots of Tiger sharks out there. Good advice on not going in the water. Leave it to the surfers who know it well. Believe it or not, me and a few of my friends use to Mountain bike down and up that road often. Too much traffic these days. We'd ride up without stopping. No POV cameras back then or we would have filmed it.
The slope is much steeper than what you have watched in the video.
That were I live
You have a lovely place for a home! I heard they closed the road to tourists due to the dengue outbreak. How are things there now?
Your knees will feel it going down, and coming back up, it will be the most difficult walk you can imagine!
I concur!
No
i did this hike back in July...i don't know how i made it out alive lol
Just hiked this yesterday with my family and the hike back up was pretty intense.
It was! 😅
When my great grandmother lived down there as a child, she had to walk up and down the road to get supplies from the main towns daily. Whenever my family and I visit we make it a point to relive that on the hike.
That hill would have killed me!
+Kerbside Travel - Ivan O'Connor no doubt! Sketchy when with other vehicles are occupying space too.
+Kerbside Travel - Ivan O'Connor It is pretty insane!
I lived down waipio for 6 months with my papa the big kahuna😊
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Trivia; This was the location for the closing scenes of the movie 'Waterworld'. I once had the privilege of driving my family down there in a Toyota 4X4....a pretty cool experience in a pretty cool place.
Hi 👋, we are there and doing the same to day. So amazing day it was so beautiful 😍!!! One of the best day of our trip. Good video guys!!!
I remember walking up this...it sucked.
I went there and swam at that beach... But I had a Jeep of course
thank u for facts
Awesome!
that sloppy hill is thrilling! nice video
It is! Would be fun to drive a 4x4 on that road. Thanks for watching :)
