Hey man - nice video. I'm thinking about doing this at the end of Nov - we will have a Nissan Murano. I'm mostly concerned with overheating/ruining the car, but also concerned with altitude sickness. I heard you mentioned your legs got tingly - any other effects? How long did you stay up there? Do you think I'd be able to make it in a Murano? The roads look good but I'm concerned with how steep it is. Would love to do it but not trying to risk destroying the car (or myself) for my honeymoon... Thanks!
Hello, Thank you for the video!! I will be there next September! I have a question... Its better to go to Mauna Kea from Kona or Hilo? Because We arrive to Kona and Then We will go Honolulu from Hilo airport. Can you help me? Because I'm thinking two nights at Kaiula Kona and one night at Hilo. Thank you so much!!!
Fonsi Gonzalez de lara doesn’t really matter, it probably a little faster to come from Hilo ( like maybe 20 minutes). But if your going for kona to Hilo I would go the day you make that trip, but it depends on if your going to have a rental car or not. The fastest way to Hilo is over the saddle road ( highway 200 ) and you would drive right by the Mauna Kea Access Road. Honestly 3 day on the big island isn’t enough time to see that much but if you really wanted to do it on one of the days you are in kona it would be easy. Just leave at 7:30 or 8 am, I think the visitor center opens at 9 but I would double check that, it would take 5-6 hours total so you would still have time to go to the beach in the afternoon. Even though you only have 3 days I would definitely recommend going up Mauna Kea.
JJohnson707 Hello!!! Ohh!!! Thank you so much your answer. Perfect!! Yes! We will be there 5 to 8 September and Honolulu 8 to 11. Well We can see the most important. First day, I want go to Pu Uhonua O Honaunau beach for exemple because I want to swim in a nice beach with whith sands and typical hawaiian. Second day, I want to see Waipi'o Valley and Akaka Falls(or the last day) and Mauna Kea (to se down the sunand the stars at night. Last day We can go to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I think that this is the most important to see there and I know that 3 days its not too much but We try to see many interesting sites hawaiians.
No, at the time you didn’t have to. We went up around 9am, right around the time the visitor center opened. There was not a lot of people. Might be deferent now.
Hi. On the upper part of Summit Road, where road is paved, I still have to use 4x4 mode? Don't it damages the 4x4 system using it on paved road for long miles? Thank you. :)
2wd is fine, 4 low is nice on the way down for engine braking. Normally you do not want to use 4wd on dry pavement, but if your tires are all the same and everything is in good working condition it’s fine, try not to turn super sharp.
I tried to make it up but the sun was blinding bright. If anyone goes up don't go within an hour of sunset. Literally couldn't see anything. Had to turn around
Why the vegetation are quite a few and far between in Hawaii? I thought Hawaii lies between the tropic of cancer and capricorn, which means Hawaii is still technically tropical, which used to see lush vegetation.
Saudi Arabia, India, Mexico and the sahara desert are at the same latitude. Why do you think climate zones are determined by Latitude? Some of Hawaii is lush and green, but this mountain is far above sea level where the climate is different.
Was the Jeep 4-wheel drive? From what I read they won’t let you drive anything ells up but 4-wheel drive. Who did you rent from? I usually use Enterprise for rental cars .
VenomX 78410 it was a little hard to take deep breaths, your hands and feet might go a little numb or get tingly, and you will feel tired. All and all it's so worth the trip up there, it's a great experience. make sure you bring a jacket and a camera 😉 have fun.
is that marked so that it's easy to find? We are going to Hawaii later this week and are planning to do this drive next week while on the big island. Depending on how we feel and we get up there I'd like to try walking that little extra to the summit. How far is it? Thanks in advance
Really? If you are going to be video taping your drive, maybe you should let your wife do the driving. The last thing you need when driving on a narrow mountain road is a car coming the other way with a knucklehead driver who is not paying attention to the road. Please grow up.
Making this drive in..well right now! Thanks for the tips glad to see the road to the summit is decent
i guess Im quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to watch newly released series online?
@Alessandro Corey I would suggest Flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
@Alessandro Corey i use FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
Hello, Its really amazing! So simple but good work behind tha camera. Some day I will also go there. Thanks
Md. Ferdous Zaman glad you enjoyed it.
I remember driving up there in a bed weather with very low visibility, did not see anything around this dirt road.

Awesome, sounds like you got it all figured out, have fun.
We are planning a trip to Maui in April or May 😋
I know that it's been a LONG time since you went up there. Did you make reservations to drive to the top?
No, at the time you didn’t have to. We went up around 9am, right around the time the visitor center opened. There was not a lot of people.

MrStraightlover once you get above 4000-5000 feet of elevation it’s not vary tropical.
Yeah this is literally so high it's a completely different climate from the rest of Hawaii. It even snows up there.

its a jeep wrangler so yes. Also check Turo for some good rentals. Its basically AirBnB for cars
Visitor center @3:00 for people interested in the part after that
Hi! What did you do about gas?
going there in a few weeks. How was the Altitude affecting you once you reached the top?
VenomX 78410 it was a little hard to take deep breaths, your hands and feet might go a little numb or get tingly, and you will feel tired. All and all it's so worth the trip up there, it's a great experience.
make sure you bring a jacket and a camera 😉 have fun.
You didn't walk the short trail to the summit from the parking lot?

What percentage of the road is gravel would you say roughly?
i wanna ride an atv up there
How many miles (driving) from sea level to the top?
241hnd about 60 miles from kona.
Hello! Did u use 4L to go up??
Thank you
Yes, it’s nice to have on the way down for the gear options but you definitely don’t need it.
Hi, did you use manual mode to control the gear or auto mode to decend?
I thought there is supposed to be an ice sheet on Mauna Kea.
do we still need a 4 wd, as recommended because of the improved road?
Not really, you mostly need it for low range because it's s so steep.
