The plain Hybrid SEL is better equipped than the PHEV SEL.
Among other things, it has the larger 10.25 inch display, panoramic roof, auto dimming rear view mirror, led interior lighting and few more minor things. For some weird reason no wireless Android Auto / Carplay.
The base Hybrid Blue trim is pretty reasonable, gets slightly better MPG. The price difference to the SEL is $6,150, is pretty significant. It will take a long time to make up for it in gas savings.
I’m not sold on Hyundai/Kia products especially after the engine fires and that they’re easily stolen. They have many years to go before they can track reliability, and quality. With so many good products coming out from Toyota/Honda there’s no need to look at this manufacturer. Japanese>Koreans

I have a 22 Tucson hybrid. Trying to decide if I should keep it after the lease is up or give it back and get a PHEV.
The PHEV system is way better in the rav4. This tucson doesn't even have a heat pump and is quite inefficient if not charged when compared with the rav4 and the ev range is shorter.
hyundais 1.6 t-gdi puts out 260 hp, 260 lb-ft torgue which is plenty of power when battery runs out while toyotas 2.5 l 177 hp, 165 lb-ft is quite underpowered for this heavy behemoth. but rav4 adds 232 electric hp and a larger battery which is great but where is the magic trick?
without electric motor the tucson gets more mpg

The total PHEV system from hyundai is rated at 261hp. Just the 1.6T engine has 180hp and 195lb-ft.
The electric motor on hyundai which is only one by the way, has just 90hp and 224lb-ft.
RAV4 Prime total system power is rated at 302hp. The 2.5L gas engine has 177hp/165lb-ft. It also has a front traction motor with 179hp/199lb-ft and another rear traction motor with 54hp and 89lb-ft. It also has a 18.1kWh battery pack while Hyundai has 13.7.
Just go and test both cars when fully charged and then with the battery "empty" and you'll see the RAV4 is light years faster than hyundai in both situations, has a way better fuel efficiency when the battery is "empty", has a better EV range especially in cold weather where hyundai will just start the gas engine if you turn on the climate to heat the cabin (even if you are in ev mode with 100% charged battery), and it will also be faster in EV-mode while the hyundai will start the gas engine even if you are in EV mode, at WOT.
Hyundai's PHEV system is crap. Poor mpg, lower ev range, no heat pump, slower in hybrid mode, slower in ev mode (doesn't even let you floor it in ev mode because the gas engine starts), unreliable.

The heat pumps in Toyota hybrids are extremely complex. One small accident in the wrong place and the car is totaled. I don't think that’s profitable in the long run.

I love driving the Tucson PHEV. 38 miles in EV mode is impressive. I'm surprised more people aren't buying these. It should be more available to find than a RAV4 Prime too.
I'm just begging Hyundai to put this hybrid powertrain in the Santa Cruz.
It would kick ass in the Cruz. Even the HEV would do well in the truck.

I think it's popular BECAUSE of the design, it looks so good in person especially in an all dark colour way

i had a 2022 regular hybrid, and it was the blue model with the lower featured car stuff.
owned it 18 months, beat the snot out of it 54k miles and only changed oil. an elk ran onto the freeway and it became a total loss. mind you, it was a hard 54k miles i put on it, and i was NOT nice to this vehicle at all. i did take extra good care of it, kept it clean, very early oil changes...but it was driven hard, 10 hours a day constant running in vegas heat, road trips, in the snow....the AWD was very competent.
the carplay/android auto SUCKS. cuts out and drops connection a lot...maybe 23 is better....
i was going to buy a 2023 model, but the freaking dealers and their markups for stuff i dont even want are insane.....so i got a tesla instead.
would recommend though...it was a comfy and smooth vehicle. sturdy and solid feeling overall. i loved it, and have no major complaints. i really was looking to get another one if it wasnt for the BS games dealers play. while below are my complaints, they are nothing severe or deal breaking at all
SOME GENERAL DETAILS
rear leg room in this car is incredible for its size and the reclining rear seats are nice....HOWEVER, the seatbelts are FLIMSY AF and will twist easily, and they knock around if they arent twisted in the right way after they are used.
the non plug in like i had, you can buy a full sized spare, a small floor jack, some tools and still use the cargo floor perfectly. and you can do this for 200-300 bucks cheaper than getting hyundais donut spare with tools kit they sell.
TUX MAT floor mats looked like factory floor mats in this car. DO NOT BUY THE FACTORY FLOOR MATS! THEY ARE PAPER THIN TOTAL JUNK! tuxmats cost the SAME as the OE floor mats!
TRUNK/CARGO space is absolutely amazing for the size of this thing. with the rear seats down and moving the drivers seats up an inch i fit a 75 inch TV in its box laid flat and closed the trunk with not an inch to spare.
the door hinges are made of playdoh.
drivers door auto up sometimes would not work
drivers door had some wind noise.
CLIMATE CONTROLS....you want heat? you dont get heat until you ramp it up to 78....sometimes you need to put it on full high then lower it. this car is very much a 2 temp attitude. the AC cranks incredibly well, but there is no really good temp regulation in this vehicle...lacks a heat pump so it relys on the cars operating temp. if its in EV mode, you will lose heat quickly.
the plastic trim on the outside bottom of the door is weak, and easy to kick getting out....be careful. dealer will argue with you to fix it too.
only fault this car had, was a low inverter coolant fault which showed up once....was a defect in the filling at the factory in the 2022 models but had zero effect on usage.
the auto brake hold has to be turned on each drive.
hyundai app is buggy at best...but it was improving.
i can attest the auto steer and auto cruise works great....HOWEVER....I GOT WORSE MPG USING CRUISE CONTROL! it makes the car accellerate more often than it needs to. i got much better mpg using my foot.
real world MPG. mine was rated 38/38 EPA. 3 adults and full cargo did not make any difference in terms of MPG.
37-42 light city flatter ground and very very easy on the gas pedal
32-35 in very heavy urban driving with lots of very short stop and go distances (think las vegas strip for hours)
38mpg highway speeds under 65
35mpg highway at 65-70
32mpg highway at 70-72
29mpg highway at 73-76
25mpg or less on highway over 77mph
19mpg highwat at 80 mph (at 16F outside)
other than a few cheap spots, cost cutting if you will, and some kind of overlooked things considering its not a lux vehicle, it certainly got me tons of comments and compliments from people that rode in it, moreso than if it was a BMW to be honest. regular hybrid or the plug in, thats up to you...but the vehicle is the same and its a pretty good one.
This Hyundai Tucson PHEV is a great small vehicle. I drove one that was a demonstrator at my local dealership for several hours and was impressed. I now have one on order. I really liked when you opened the rear door on the driver's side and your sweet little daughter sitting behind the passenger seat waved Hi. That made me smile. Enjoyed your video very much along with the explanation of all the various features and controls. My biggest dislike was the lack of a spare tire. I can't stand the Fix-a-Flat tire repair kit which has a limited ability to plug and seal a small hole only. A sidewall cut will render the Fix-a-Flat completely useless. Are you listening Hyundai? Looking forward to your next review.
38 miles is good result. This and sportage is sweet spot for this engine combo. Not too heavy but lot of room still.
I bought a 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, SEL w/convenience package... basically everything you get in the limited (bigger infotainment, leatherette seats, panoramic sunroof), just don't have the gadgets like 360 camera (you get regular backup camera) and no "auto-parking"... otherwise its the same as the limited for about $5K less.
If you can’t find a rav 4 prime xse with the premium package for close to msrp, this is probably a better choice than buying the rav4 prime se.
In the 2022 that I had there was a standard household outlet in the footwell under the rear seat.

Torn between 2024 Tucson PHEV Limited or Santa Fe 2023 Limited PHEV.... which would you recommend?

Note to car companies... only have one car in your lineup called "Santa".
The new 2024 Santa Fe looks amazing... but obviously costs more... go with your budget! (Don't get the 2023 Sana Fe, look at the 2024!)
Looking at the Rav4 Prime SE in comparison to this (roughly same price between them) is you are missing a few things in comparison to the Hyundai Limited for about $45k MSRP. Front and rear parking sensors, 360 cam (namely front cam), turn signal cams, cooled seats, pano roof, real leather seats (not available on any Prime), likely rear heated seats. That is a lot. The Rav4 XSE does not come with several of these features without an added package, at which point the vehicle costs like $8k more than the Tucson PHEV Limited. Would also note that you can get a lightly used (under 10k miles) Tucson PHEV Limited for well under $40k in the Boston market. I test drove the Rav4 Prime XSE and I will say it drives a bit better than the Tucson but overall it is pretty negligible. The Toyota definitely has more of a truck thing going on with the way it handles and takes bumps, the Hyundai feels a little more agile and car-like. Steering feel is a little better in the Tucson I thought. I have driven them back to back on several occasions. Toyota only has 15% more horsepower and with that bigger battery comes more weight. Battery also takes 2.5 hours to charge on 220V vs only 1.75 hours for the Tucson battery. If you don't routinely need that full 40 miles of range that is a lot of battery to carry around considering the thing can also run on gas. The AWD system is also much better on the Hyundai in my opinion (mechanical vs electronic) so if you plan on actually needing AWD I would go with the Hyundai hands-down with its locking differential. Hyundai also has a 'snow mode' which the Rav4 does not. Only has 'trail' mode which is only for low speed operation. Sport mode on the Tucson puts it very close to the perfomance level of the Prime.
My 2019 Tuscon was just tboned so now im looking at getting this. But no wireless android might be a deal breaker. Its frustrating that everyone else is offering wireless AA. But I don't know if I can give up that auto hold/brake. 😢😢 Im so torn right now.

Northern climates would have done well with a heat pump. That new SantaFe profile and rear floor board looks like they could’ve put in an even larger battery and is strange it was removed. Something is going on with that rear packaging and stadium seating. Probably no chance you’ll see one but if you do, take a few photos on your back for the team. 😁 21:23
This thing can climb a hill faster than I expected and was far more comfortable than expected. AC is rock solid. My friend's Limited H-trac was an impressive car for the money, I thought. One thing I do not like about some of the Lexus vehicles is the road noise (and lack of road feel) and Hyundai really made this with a lot of thought on some of the finer details.
Phev's should get 100 miles in ev mode for less charge as some people dont like to plug in every night

The RAV4 Prime got a good lease deal in many areas with a commercial deal and now Hyundai is matching Toyota with a similar incentive on the Tucson PHEV, and most dealers are full of the PHEVs at least here in California (Shame that the SEL P doesn't have the panoroof). I think you should lease and not buy this, especially if you can't get a R4P.

The SEL, the less expensive trim has no optional packages and currently sells at ~40K in my area, which is about MSRP.

Hyundai manufacturer should start direct online shopping and remove all their dealerships as a middleman that added extra cost to the vehicles, also unnecessary maintenance work and parts to consumers as well.
I’d pick this over the rav4. It’s more stylish, nicer inside, better tech, good PHEV with a regular auto and it’s a good price. May not be as fast as the PHEV rav4 but that’s a worthy trade off because the rav4s way too compromised
Wise choice. This PHEV tucson hadn't got a fire recall yet meanwhile NX 450+ and RAV4 prime did had a fire recall and every fanboys dodge the recall news.

I don't get the love for the RAV4. The interior is boring and old. The exterior is blocky and boring. Finally, that car is LOUD and completely zero road feel.
It's an appliance vehicle - that is its appeal for most consumers. I'm personally not a fan. The RAV4 Prime is much quieter.
True, the Tuscon exterior and interior look more stylish and upscale than the older RAV4.
I get what you mean about the interior as it looks dated, but it is functional. The Prime is in a league of it’s own when it comes to the EV part of the PHEV. It has two motors that add up to the best EV horsepower in the segment by far, even when compared to much more expensive PHEV’s like the Volvos. It’s also very efficient in both EV and HV mode. The Hyundai is probably better for off-roading with it’s mechanical AWD and you can get PHEV’s with more total horsepower, but don’t go off-road much and I’m driving all EV most days. This Hyundai is going to turn on the engine if you need to heat or cool the car as it has no heat pump. I can drive my Prime as 80 mph in cold weather and the engine doesn’t need to come on. So the love I have for my Prime is that I’m driving electric most of the time without feeling like I’m compromising.

I agree a heat pump would be nice, but I was able to buy my 2022 phev Tucson top trim for $10k less than a Rav4P, 8 months wait vs 3 years, fyi the AC compressor is electric so gas engine not needed for cooling.

really don't like the interior, gauges look small and slapped on not a fan of tablets vs round traditional looking screens, centre console is not physical buttons and piano black... ugh. Steering wheel design is ugly. Overall those things would make this a pass for me, as you spend a lot of time inside.
Lol... the infotainment of the Tucson is literally contoured into the dash, while the Rav4 has the infotainment screen glued to the top of the dash... I think you are very confused.
I didn't say anything about a Rav4 maybe you're confused? its okay if you bought a Tuscon and like the ugly dash. I don't like the way they did it. touch buttons suck and the bezels around these gauge screens is big and won't date well. The Hybrid has a tablet style dash the non have contoured.@@wolfshanze5980

As a Rav4 Prime owner, heck no! 😂
Especially when I bought my Prime for MSRP in 2021 AND qualified for the $7,500 tax credit that was available for the vehicle at the time. I love my Prime, but I wouldn’t pay over $50K for it. Over $50K for a Rav4 of any trim is outrageous. If I’m spending over $50K for a Toyota SUV, it would only be for the upcoming Land Cruiser.

Getting Hyundai hybrid system is way more better, reliable, and far superior to toyota. Plus Hyundai Tucson PHEV is a better choice. The RAV4 Prime is overpriced and cost as more than the Lexus RX. Waste of money.
