oh yeah also just in case 6:42 for Maya the joke is that Brabant is a region seperated between the Netherlands (north) and Belgium (south) and Maya come from the Northern dutch part of Brabant, but Mymy like to joke on her being from the Belgian part of Brabant as she's a Dutch nationalist and Belgium is the Netherlands or something. There's also that one other official art by Massa with Maya being forced to wear a WW1 Belgian uniform by Mymy, leaning toward the fact Maya is actually from Dutch Brabant.
Ongezellig has basically evicted all other brain functions for me. It stands out by being just so much with its blends of wacky internet humor and visual gags while also staying grounded in its plot. Outstanding review
You're doing gods work by reviewing this show, and yeah with its continuing popularity I have a glimmer of hope Studio Massa will eventually come around to continue this in some way. This shows cancellation makes me genuinely upset when it was about such a relatable and sad character.
Untapped potential, you can say it twice. I try to look at it fondly as a successful short movie, but at the same time I just feel depressed this is not getting continued. Who knows, time changes, a lot changes and maybe one day Studio Massa manages to set this project sailing again be it in animated or comic form and we can meet these three compelling sisters once again. Until then, one can only wish and value the amazing short movie we got.

I have to disagree with your comparison between Ongezellig and Watamote, I only see Watamote as a small inspiration. I find Ongezellig to be one of the best pilots in YT, it's relatable, charming (due to all the Dutch references) and funny. It had something special, a show about a family with a great representation of mental health. As you said, untapped potential indeed. Anyway, amazing video, great analysis, and coverage of the whole pilot. It's always good to see people reviewing this underrated web series that deserved far more attention than it got. Thankfully we have projects that are willing to continue the plot such as project ROY or OUC, it's a great time to be part of the fandom.

I'm going to be honest, I wasn't really "in" the Ongezellig fandom much before making this video. (I'm still not to, really) So to be honest, I have no idea where the "gem" thing comes from, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.
It's just 4chan lingo. "Gems" refers to good memes/posts, and "coal" refers to bad memes/posts. 4chan is basically the only place on the internet where Ongezellig has a dedicated fandom.
Oh, okay then. I thought this whole time it was a more specific "Ongezllig" thing. Though I did know that the series gained a lot of it's following via 4Chan. Thanks for the info.
Something something gem... Nah, but fr last week, I discovered ongezellig and have been rewatching it ever since it's amazing, and i can relate with it on a deeper level. Really wanna give back something in the form of animation to the community
Ive said it multiple times in other places. I think the show being dutch actually gave it some foreign charm, the same way we look at anime and were able to embrace the culture and find interest in it (spoken like a weeaboo loser) I feel like the same could be said about this show had it continued. Thats why I still dont think that Studio Massa shouldve even worried about that or even thought about that to begin with. I think if he just continued making the show like he shouldve and followed the right things to do (this is an entirely different conversation) he wouldve came out with a fine product even if it wouldve been crowd funded.
i love ongezellig and found it such a relatable plot that i felt like could be happening to anyone around the world right now. I have a love hate relationship with the community tho as half of them are fascists but on the other hand they are one of the only reasons ongezellig is known abt in the west and its how i found out abt it. Still a gem of a show
Sorry, what is it that Maya does that's wrong? The worst thing I can think of is the 'no parents' comment, which isn't right but clearly had precedent in her mind, and Coco literally responds by threatening to kill her. Besides, I wouldn't call a stressed, anxious teenager lashing out a 'bad person'.
@@Zooker25 I mean , I would consider insulting the person who's done nothing but try to help you by mocking them for having dead parents a pretty terrible thing to do. Though keep in mind, I by no means think this makes Maya a bad character. I actually think it makes her more interesting, as it opens up much potential for her to grow.
@@JoyofCrimeArt Maya doesn't take it as being helped. She did that in response to Coco unintentionally insulting her for not having friends, something she is deeply insecure about. She finds Coco overbearing, intrusive and arrogant, and I don't think she's entirely wrong in that. Coco's behaviour throughout the film suggests that she's really not the perfect girl she tries to convince everyone she is. If she stopped trying so hard to be Maya's saviour, their relationship might improve. All the characters are flawed and well written, and you can see how they interpret various situations very differently. I've had similar situations with my own brother. I was the Coco, he was the Maya. He'd lash out when I was 'only trying to help'. and when I stopped trying to push my own social confidence onto him, we stopped fighting and our relationship improved.

In both cases she turns out quarter Flemish
The uniform she's forced to wear is not Belgian, but KNIL.
