JOHN PETRUCCI 1999 Ibanez Clinic

- Me and My Dad went to Finland to catch this clinic since he didn't go through Sweden in October of 1999.
My dad ended up filming the whole thing HAND held . Filmed on a Panasonic digital camera.
IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE VIDEO it's because it's been demonetized, rightfully so since I'm uploading someone else's musical works. However that might mean that the video won't be available in certain regions/countries.

1 hour and 42 minutes hand filming! Jesus Christ, props to your father for providing us with this gem!
And six seconds.. after 1:42:00 every second matters
I did the same for a Buckethead Chicago concert a few years ago. Not worth it lol, has like 2k views on UA-cam.
Jesus Christ is Lord.
jesus... my arm hurts just thinking about this
Woah..it is actually hidden gem of guitar knowledge that might be unreplay again...
Petrucci's tone in this era was god-tier. The Ibanez + the original IIC+s = heaven
He's using the Triaxis + 2:90 in this video though ;)
@@FedericoMK I think you're right yeah. good spot!
@@FedericoMK Yup, Triaxis.
Never got why when JP talks about his past tone he says it was immature... it was just perfect.

Wow, In the same audience as Ola too. Amazing. Who is he?😅
@@keithkrick234 PewDiePie
Seeing him with that guitar is so nostalgic.
Thank you Ola and cinematographer Papa Englund for this valuable historical ARTIFACT of the guitar world circa 1999.
What a cool dad you have. Thanks for uploading this. And. I WAS THERE MAN. And for me, this clinic was one of the pivotal points in a 16-year-old dude's guitar-playing career. I wasn't that familiar with Dream Theater or John Petrucci prior to this, but a high school buddy of mine and his older brother were going and they asked me to come along (the brothers were very much into music, they had a band near Helsinki, a drummer and a guitarist, much like Van Halen - a shout out to Lustig brothers if you're reading this!). Up to this point I'd been a huuuge metallica fan and Kirk was the guy for me. After this night everything changed. John pointed me the way of practicing with a metronome, going for smaller Jazz III picks, learning scales, an overall more methodological and paying your dues approach to guitar. I even installed a DiMarzio Air Norton in my RG. The mere down to earth presence of John was so captivating.
After the clinic was over, John was there to sign autographs for us outside the auditorium. I got into the long queue to wait to my turn. I noticed the guy in front of me had a guitar with him. When it finally was my turn, I didn't know much to say other than a mere "Hi", but John handled it cool and signed a black-and-white Ibanez promo shot for me. Later when I looked at the signature, it was Petrucci signature alright but also a giant silver marker test scribble that John had done before signing the guys guitar in front of me. My buddies later teased me "what's that on your signature". What unique piece that was.
23 years later, I still vividly remember moments from the clinic. Like that brave guy who walks up cold and tests John's gear in front of 200 like-minded poeple. That must've been a little hand-shaky moment. And when John was asked what he thought his weaknesses were.
I've been waiting for this to be uploaded ever since I read in some old Dream Theater / guitar message board that there was a full bootleg of the clinic. Perhaps Ola himself commented this back in the day. Thanks for uploading it man!
Good times man. I remembered the signing as well, I remembered no one dared to walk up to him when I was there so I just snuck through and had him sign my SFAM album.
@@OlaEnglund Hi Ola, with your dad playing jazz etc, what did he think of John's playing?
Great tale of an encounter with this most influential of guitarists. I saw JP at a clinic in Melbourne Australia maybe 10 years ago. John was here because G3 were doing their first visit to Australia. I think the positive reception convinced, because DT itself had its first Australian tour not long afterwards.
Was nerve wracking meeting my idols including JP of course, but like you I got something signed; in my case the live 'Score' DT DVD. Gee, DVD, time has flown...
@@OlaEnglund Cool Ola! I had John sign the back of the headstock on my JPM P3... that I foolishly sold to fund the new EBMM. The EBMM was an excellent guitar... but it never quite fit me like the JPM did. I still miss that Ibanez!
When reading this comment I imagined John Petrucci as a giant hulking monster signing your paper. But he wasn't yet. He was a little skinny fella
Dang! that guy who got the balls to try to attemp playing paradigm shift is hella lucky. He got the chance to not only hold john petrucci's ibanez in 1999 the peak of dream theater but he got the opportunity to play it and get taught by John himself. Man what a lucky guy
THIS is the John Petrucci guitar image that really suits him.
Sorry EBMM, love your guitars.
But THIS is THE guitar that started everything.
Thanks for the upload Ola.
Black mirror, I agree to a large extent. But more than just the gear change, I miss JP's willingness to play things that are less 'metal'. There are all sorts of jazzy bits that JP used to play that simply don't seem part of his current stylistic make-up.
I also miss the JP from this Ibanez era who was known to sometimes have 'solo spots' during DT shows that were almost completely unaccompanied and mostly without much in the way of effects. I'm thinking here of the awesome solo spot in the 'Five Years in a LIVETime' concert recording from the Derek Sherinian phase of DT. JP's technique and his control are on full display because rather than his more recent solo spots that are likely coated like treacle in delay and sugary keyboard pad accompaniment; this spot is raw, often without any delay or reverb.
Many of us also look at JP's famous bit at the end of 'To Live Forever' from the 'Live in Tokyo' concert as an example of just how broad and wide JP's improvising CAN be, but doesn't seem to be these days.
@@DanielVerberne Absolutely.
One hundred percent agree.
It really seems that Petrucci somehow manage to lock himself inside a persistent and almost mathematical world of reverb and delays that tuneled his way of playing.
Not saying he is a bad player, of course he’s not, but he is just not that expansive same Petrucci from “Awake” and “scenes from a memory”.
They should really let him release a Picasso musicman
@@DanielVerberne totally. He was way more jazzy and creative with his improvisations at that time.
@@DanielVerberne i started noticing the change in his playing style by the time he joined the G3 jams.
Best DT era, best Petrucci’s Tone ever.
Just if you wanna hear the songs that he played here on this video.
3:35 Paradigm Shift

What about Hell's Kitchen?
@@kraunchmontozin Done, my friend. Thanks
I can't wait for the part where he teaches us how to control the temperature of the sun with his amp, and even more excited for killzone mode
Still my favorite Petrucci guitar. The MM's are amazing but being an old school fan - its just classic to see him with a picasso ibanez
@@dennis4113 it's his old rig
I also really like his old Ibanez custom. But as a huge Ibanez fan, I must say his JP music man model ends up being as cool as the old JPM ibby, however the Majesty one is... just wierd.
Favorite guitarist of all time. His playing and song writing is amazing
the good old Ibanez days, for me his best sound , both his playing and his equipment
you know its good when you see the 4:3 aspect ratio
love this old videos
Your dad is a hero for filming the whole clinic without a stand
Hey Ola, love all your vids man. Thank you for sharing this.
Petrucci In dazzling shape! The precision and hand reactivity just incredible, a pioneer, you see a lot of guitarist and clearly you can see where came from!👌🏻…
This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen. Petrucci is one of my biggest influences and it’s so cool to see him in a clinic from the late 90’s with an Ibanez. Absolutely amazing!
This guitar clinic by Petrucci is amazing how much depth he has when playing music you just forget where you are for the time being ❤🔥
To me this is John at his best, I really digged the late 90s vibe, I was a kid and that was exactly what I wanted to look (and hopefully play) like once grown! And what great music he managed to put out in those few years, two LTE, Scenes from a Memory, An Evening with JP & JR... I should've convinced my father to take me to his clinic in Italy, I was planning to go to the autumn 2001 one, but it was canceled last minute for obvious reasons... Thanks for sharing this gem, lots of nostalgia! ♥
Always lovef JPs Ibanez era, it was heavier and had more feelings somehow, can't explain
I remember Dream Theater was playing a show in Oslo around 2002 and I friend of mine and I were skipping school to attend Petrucci's guitar clinic at the local guitar shop in Oslo. We arrived and the guard told us we were the last two to be let in, (phew!). During the guitar clinic Petrucci there was a Q and A. Almost everyone raised their hands eagerly in the air to ask some technical question and for some reason he picked me to go first. I had absolutely no question prepared so I just winged it and asked: "Uhm... so how was it like to play with Steve Vai?". I could hear the collective sigh of annoyance from all the other guitar nerds in the room but John seemed more than happy to answer that "Oh, it was great". The other nerds got their questions answered eventually though, including my friend who had prepared a whole list in a notebook. Great clinic, cool guy, good times.
So awesome you uploaded this Ola, I bet you never thought years later you would be interviewing The mighty Petrucci on a coffee with Ola 👍 it’s become full circle 🤘
Petrucci playing Ibanez guitars😎🤘😎🤘his best period imho - THANK YOU Mr. Englund for this invaluable piece of history🙏
Thanks for preserving this, man. Love stuff like this!
Thx Ola... So much wonderful memories... John was so amazing. Probably the most beautiful and inspired period ! LTE 1, 2 and falling into infinity are master class of my favorite John playing...❤
I love how he just shreds on the guitar while speaking to the audience but isnt even paying attention to it or realizing it 😆 michael romeo always did that in his old vids too. Just nervous probably. And probably still sounds 10x better than anything i can do if it were plugged in 😆
Give a guitarist a guitar to have in their hands and they'll feel less socially awkward and be able to concentrate better despite random noodling.
@@AJPMUSIC_OFFICIAL i bring my guitar to parties sometimes "to jam" but really its my coping mechanism to do just that lol
Petrucci is the man!!! What an awesome guitarist and person, so humble and down to earth.
Man, this takes me back. Thank you for the upload. It doesn’t matter if JP plays EBMM for the next 100 years, the Ibanez JPM + Triaxis days were IT for me.
Agreed. Petrucci has always had a fantastic guitar sound, but the Ibanez JPM into his old Mesa rack rig was simply magical.
@@AdrianNWB I agree, also it could also be his playing as well? i feel like the notes, modes, scales in his phrasing or whatever he used back then gave it such a unique sound. It captured the time and gave DT that magical, mystic and dreamy sound that we all remember fondly.
I know this guy's mindset very well.. he didnt sip the water because he was thirsty, or even for general hydration... he did it to lubricate the tendons in his hands and fingers, lol. Love this guy, and one day, yes, we will have an arm wrestle... lol (inside joke, if he's reading this, he'll know) : ) (Hint John - Glen Cove Mansion). Awesome hand held vid, thanks for posting this Ola, and yep, I have a Randall Satan 50W head, (and gifted it to my awesome son.... because he's very persuasive) lol
I miss JP in the Ibanez days. I know his EBMM guitars are great, but his best material was created with those Ibanez models, which feels more significant, historically. This brings me back to my woodshedding days in such a big way, thanks for posting this!!!
Shout out to Papa Englund's great camerawork for almost 2h.
This is an absolute gem, thank you so much for sharing Ola!
It's really inspiring to me to see someone playing guitar with a backing track like I wanna do but all the way back in the year of my birth, just goes to show that doing it all yourself isn't such a modern phenomenon afterall!
Sometimes i miss the 90's a lot. Cooler days... the CD days. When we would buy CD's and get good surprises by many bands. Amazing times. Very little internet, way more into playing guitar, spending lots of time with it.
OMG!, that tone !!
John's finest music times. You feel something special with that Ibanez, Mesa, and that amazing..Amazing!! feeling playing guitar.
Thanks OLa😍
Thank you very much Ola. Realizing this clinic was the one held in Finland, I was also part of the audience.
The picture quality is incredible considering this is from the 90s, holy cow Ola!
Must have been one hell of a camera back then!
@@BulletRohmance all my dad had was an oxycodone dependency :)
This is incredible! It’s even more inspiring to see a 1999 clinic like this uploaded of my biggest inspiration 🎸. I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like to have witnessed this in person. Thank you for uploading Ola! 👍💯
It has been a long time since I have encountered the charm of Petrucci in his Ibanez days.
The pickups will probably be DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton & DP161F Steve’s Special.
Thank you for sharing Ola!
I like JP in all eras, but Ibanez IaW/Awake/LTE era is the best for me.
I decided to throw a Steve’s Special and an Air Norton S (the single coil sized version of the Air Norton) in my Ibanez RG565 reissue that I bought last year. Even through my main high gain amp isn’t a Mesa (I use a Revv Generator 120), those pickups definitely get me in the ballpark of classic ‘90s Petrucci tones.
I'd say these are the pickups Petrucci used to play back then. I have the same combination on my '98 RG and it's just perfect to match his tones (to the best of my abilities 😅).
@@AdrianNWB good job man! I bet you sound amazing!
@@pablomilano7320 Thanks! Is my tone amazing? Yes, but my playing could use some more work lol!
Petrucci was born for ibanez. He's wasting his time with Musicman right now.
this is awesome props to your dad for filming this especially for this long!
Wow what a memory! I was in the Italian one. It was the night DT released Scenes From a Memory. After the show we went to a pub waiting for midnight to hear the album… and Petrucci came too.
It was a pity that they did not allow us to film the clinic. In the previous clinic tour I made a video bootleg too. Soo cool!
No way Ola. This is a huge service to everyone. Also so funny that you came to Finland to see John! I loved those Ibanez art guitars, one of the most unique and recognizable.
Nailed everything, what a performance, thanks for sharing Ola! 🙏🙏
This is a jewel! Please deeply thank your dad for filming it, and thank you so much for sharing it!
Thank you Ola for uploading this gem and props to your dad for the stamina and patience! Video and audio quality are outstanding ❤️
Thank you so much Ola for sharing this material, it's amazing. I agree that this was the best Petrucci tone ever and a big reason why the classic DT albums sound so great... how he fills the room with his guitar, the "orchestration method", is awesome.
Just finished watching the whole thing. JP is one of my biggest influences. Thank you for uploading the footage with minimal editing.
Divine and priceless, 23 years ago, just a magic man very simple and cooooooool

Thanks for the upload, Ola! To think you got to meet and interview him recently - loved your content since the FearedSE days.. so happy for you man. Also, massive props to you dad for filming this gem :D
Nerves of steel on the guy walking up at 33:36. Mad props.
Thank you for the great upload.
I wonder if Petrucci will ever go back to just the goatee...
More importantly, I wonder if he will ever revive his pre-2000's Picaso guitar! I get he is so in it with Ernie Ball MM now, but they should understand the significance of his old guitar, and shouldn't mind him whipping it out on occasion.
Gotta love John Petrucci.
the best video you've upload on your entire channel :) thanks so much for this!
Thanks Ola for uploading this gem!
This is so cool! And also still my favourite era of Petrucci tone - Thanks for sharing!

Awesome! I can't wait to watch this later. Thanks for uploading it, and thanks to your dad for filming it.
Ola, your dad's ability to focus and not shake the camera like as if he's filming sasquatch or a UFO is commendable, thanks for uploading this specimen of JP when he had no muscles.

I've been a huge DT/JP fan since the first DT album and he opened up a whole new chapter for me as a pretty advanced guitar teenager and I've never looked back really!
This is an important event so it's fantastic that your dad documented it - and now you've uploaded it. I doubt the label will complain about this upload (and It's also mostly LTE), but in the remote chance it's being taken down I've "archived" it locally now... ;)
Give our regards to your dad as well!
TACK!!!
