@Death By Koalla He has three stripes on his uniform, indicating the rank of commander. A captain would have four stripes. he has also been depicted with 1 stripe and two stripes, but never with four.
But if he was a pirate he would not have an official uniform. Chances are he WAS a commander in the legitimate Navy, but now he's a pirate and he's just a captain that still wears his uniform.
I love the story of Captain 'I-Can't-Remember-His-Name,' who captured a ship and its crew, and took nothing more from them than their hats. Apparently the pirates had all lost their hats the previous day, having thrown them all into the air/ sea in their merriment.
I for one love the "Letters of Marque" type of pirates. I just find it so hilarious.

Thus, privateers are basically hired mercenaries of the seas.

Some took it quite seriously, my favorite Privateer was Morgan.
Used it as a shield quite successfully against the Spanish.

Solid video! This is one of the few topics I can say I actually know a bit about. If anyone's interested more on the topics of pirates I'd recommend reading The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard (the basis for the TV show Black Sails) as it details the more famous and lesser known personalities of the Golden Age of piracy in the Caribbean. Alternatively, if you're more interested in a greater historical overview of piracy, then check out Pirate Hunting by Benerson Little which discusses the ancient and mysterious Sea Peoples, Pompey the Great's absolute savage and tactical obliteration of all piracy in the Mediterranean under Rome, the Berber pirates, and the status of modern day piracy.

Um, wrong. Anarchists are bomb-throwing malcontents who cause misery and pain. They WOULDN'T have a democratic government because ANY semblance of civilization is ugly to them.
I agree with Garlic, but yeah, many pirates didn't want much to do with their governments, why they fled to the lifestyle in the first place. It isn't anarchy, because that would mean a crew with no head, no captain or quartermaster, and with more than, say, 10 at the most, that would be a BAD idea. Even with just 10, your sure to be more effective with clear structure and chain of command, as I would remind you, a pirate crew is basically a paramilitary unit, far less restrictive, yes. But set for war and plunder none the less.

Or, to counter your point more specifically, here is the literal definition of "Anarchist" (as in "exactly what Anarchists are", to use your own words):

Eye patches where mainly used by the crew who were needed below decks. If you go from a light area to a dark area your eyes need time too adjust. However if you use a patch you have always one good eye who is adjusted to darkness. This trick could save your life in combat. So those patches are not far fetched and where used by all sailors.

Fun note: The eye patch helped with preserving night vision where there is a disparity in light. Those who use NVG monoculars know what I mean.

Fun fact, apparently the parrot thing is somewhat historically accurate. Sailors would often have low maintenance pets for companionship on long voyages, and parrots were easy to acquire in the Caribbean.
