1. Use a bucket. It’s deeper and allows for the bubbles to escape freely. 2. Play long tones. The air volume should change and hence the bubble frequency from one pitch to the next. It should remain constant on a single long tone.
That reminds me I did a quiz at school and there was a music round, a picture of a euphonium came up and everybody in my class said “it’s a trombone!” The brass band player in me was screaming lol
This is part of the William Adam (an old trumpet/brass teacher from Indiana University) playing philosophy. Basically, its practicing keeping a steady flow of air and keeping your sound even. This is the fundamental idea of the entire philosophy! "The Bucket Lesson" was one the first lessons I had with my university professor and I rememeber it fondly. I use it with some of my older students.
It’s called follow through, my trumpet teacher taught me this trick as well. The reason you want to keep the bubbles going is to have a constant air support behind each note, leading to more connected tonguing
@@theblurishere461it’s a joke I think Like when you play bad, to cover it up you might say oh I’m a little rusty (Plus the fact that it’s metal + water, even if brass doesn’t rust)
One thing that you can try that is similar is flutter tonguing lines like those or even other flow studies. Always thinking forward and connection between the notes.
We had a swimming day at the end of band camp. We went to our local pool but my director told us to bring our brass instruments. He had up put the bell underwater and play. Science behind it: pretty much the pressure forces you to have a good ambrocher
This is similar to what my marching band brass section actually does at a point during band camp. They put their horns in the water like that and then raise them up for dynamic practice I think
My band’s director uses 18 ft long tube and tells us to attach our mouth piece to it and keep the bubbles constant. Def helped me get a higher range and endurance
I think it's more sharp because the water vibrates differently than air, so it's just, oscillate faster i guess Maybe it has something to do with the spped of sound in a liquid ?
we do this during band camp, the goal is to basically keep the bubbles at a steady stream, it’s to teach us to have a continuous stream of air when we play
my marching band did something similar to this but with our trombones. the goal was to project our air enough to make the water splash up and in turn make us louder!
Its supposed to be bubbling in a way that replicates a rolling boil from pasta water, i dont think your sink was deep enough/bell wasnt deep enough in the water, at least thats what my teacher says
This actually sounds really cool with the chimes and probably other instruments too. You just dip one end in water and take the tube in and out of water and it makes really cool effects. I forgot when in the process you are supposed to hit it, tho. That was a few years back.
You’ve never had to use the water bucket! You’re so lucky I play the trumpet and it’s not very fun! Usually with my school they have us use it to help us get higher notes out! ❤❤❤
Im a trumpet (new at it kinda) and I don't have one at home only in band at school but I kinda wanna try it just don't want to ruin my trumpet and have it rot, can someone tell me if anything will happen if you do this like rotting or anything (sorry if this sounds stupid 😅I just wanna do it but not get in trouble for my trumpet being bad)

Or you could try breathing gym and forgo all that lol
@@theohornsby51oh yeah we do that
MY TEACHER DID THIS DURING MY LESSON OMG I KNOW THIS I THOUGHT HE DID IT FOR LEARNING SOMEHOW THIS IS SO COOOOOOOL
Ooh, that sounds lovely! I don't even play trumpet, I play trombone.
@KoolPenguinRL *plays in the pool*
A fellow trombonist!
Same, but I also have a pool
That reminds me I did a quiz at school and there was a music round, a picture of a euphonium came up and everybody in my class said “it’s a trombone!”

@@Celeste_51 i would have shown them the 8th position
As a clarinetist, i would ultimately cry so hard if i put my instrument in water.
Metal clarinets.....
Now that's wild😄
of course you would because you’re a clarinetist
@xrs10s you probably play a brass instrument, so you wouldn't understand the fear of a damaged wooden instrument.
My corks would be cooked

As a percussionist that is on a swim team I see this as an absolute win
Imagine doing that with a French horn
I play french horn so I immediately did lol
@@mouhiazeck my sink is not big enough

Me and second instrument (euph): idea activated 💡
As a trumpet player, he sounds beautiful
OH EM GEE! This guy is HYSTERICAL!!
Bro maxed out his tone skill
Charlier No. 2. Likely one of the most beuatiful of etudes.
It’s called follow through, my trumpet teacher taught me this trick as well. The reason you want to keep the bubbles going is to have a constant air support behind each note, leading to more connected tonguing
cant wait to try this with my euphonium
This is going to help me a lot because I started trumpet a few weeks ago so this is help
Great sound! That's my favorite Charlier.
5 days later: "im a little rusty"
Brass doesn’t rust
If your talking about oxidation
We actually clean them by submerging the entire instrument!
We don't play with iron? Wouldn't make sense since iron deteriorates faster
@@theblurishere461it’s a joke I think

This is literally perfect, i have like 3 hours waiting for a flight so i can just line up the vods to watch
Omg I did that in band this week

Charlier etude 2 in water is crazy

probably feels more connected because the resistance from the water was removed so you didn't have to comp for it

Cool breath control tip. It's forcing you to maintain a certain presure to keep the bubbles rolling?

It’s builds like this that make me want to buy for rent

What was that melody? It's beautiful
Etude No. 2 “Du Style” - Theo Charlier
I have to do Charlier 2 for an audition and all of a sudden im hearing it everywhere
I used to sing large sections of a song while gargling before a show. Seems like a similar concept, though a bit messier for instruments! 😅
Alright, time to put it into test with my tuba :D
This is some splatoon ass noises
IK PLAYING THAT ETUDE AT THE END FOR MY DRUM CORP AUDITION 😭
The reason your trumpet was sharp after is that a cold brass instrument tends to be sharp, so don't use cool or cold water. (I might be wrong, tho)
my marching band did something similar to this but with our trombones. the goal was to project our air enough to make the water splash up and in turn make us louder!
Sirve esto para comprobar la Compresion de una Trompeta.... Gracias por el Video... Muy aleccionador....
Lmao that's the exact piece I've been practicing all day
Can’t wait to try this with my Tuba :D
this is what my band director did with the trumpets today it was so funny 😂
Its supposed to be bubbling in a way that replicates a rolling boil from pasta water, i dont think your sink was deep enough/bell wasnt deep enough in the water, at least thats what my teacher says
Just being curious? Does it work on the “plastic” clarinet? Or not for woodwinds and only for brass😮😅
The water makes it sharp because the instrument gets cold, and when metal gets cold, it shrinks
I gotta try this on tuba
The bell in the water sounded like Splatoon music ngl 😅
Using the tuning slide whilst in water, is hilarious, also bonus point the U.S is bonkers having sockets next to sinks, not allowed in the UK.
Section leaders have us do this trick all the time…it’s pretty fun lol
Maybe the water warmed it up to make it sound sharp
Me who plays tuba: tf am I supposed to do?
As a percussionist, I'm confused

Great tip for a trumpet player but as a French horn player I doubt this would work out too well for me-
am going to try it with sax !!
God I remember my professor making me carry a bucket to and from studio for this same thing
As a trumpet player idk if I would do that
As a trombone this’ll be a little hard

Song name?
Adam’s Adam’s Adam’s
What mouthpiece do you use?
Bro's mouthpiece went gangster on him. 💀
As a trombone player, I wonder if it works
Nice, Du Style
Same trick with a Harmon mute! You can improve your consistency by playing it, and trying to match the same level!
What exerpt is this?
Now what if I try this with my clarinet
What’s that song?
“My”

instructions unclear, trumpet valves are in the pipes
You add back pressure to the instrument by doing this so when you remove it, it will be more open.
The water changed the temperature of the instrument
What’s that music your platingt
i totally forgot that its even safe to put your trumpet in water 😭
I play low brass euphonium
Imagine the people who breathe in through their instruments
Imagine trying to do that with a Tuba or Sousaphone
that sounds like a french horn after taken out the water
imagine doing this but with tuba
When the tuba tries this
does this hurt the trumpet
Probably sharp bc water reflects soind, slightly faster frequency than brass?
Poor horn saying "RE" da whole time
Ah yes the old bell in water trick i did this with my tuba (trust)
I wonder if this will work with my tuba 🤔😂
It sounds like Splatoon 2 inklings, tbh 💀
Meanwhile, the saxophone
what etude did he play?
charlier etude 2
let me go try that with my sax rq
why is it giving splatoon squid singing
