Just when you are on the edge wondering if anything is worth persuing anymore, along comes someone like Paul Simon and the Jesse Dixon Singers who give you new zest that sooths all the hurt.
This reminds me of when my son (born in 1970) came to me when Paul Simon's song "Loves me like a rock" came on the radio. He was just 3 and started sing it to me. Oh, my mama loves me, she loves me She get down on her knees and hug me Like she loves me like a rock
The backing vocalists on the studio version of “Loves Me Like a Rock” are actually The Dixie Hummingbirds, a gospel group that has existed in various lineups dating all the way back to 1928. You are correct, though, in that the Oak Ridge Boys sang backup on “Slip Slidin’ Away”.
Closed enough...looking for Paul's SNL performance which was probably two years after this clip. Dick left ABC in fall of 73 and Paul did second show of SNL in 1975. Dick did return briefly on CBS in 76. Then in 77 moved to PBS where he stayed till 1988. Then was on CNBC till 1996. So this clip could also be from CBS or PBS but both versions were 30 minute shows.
@Esperanza243 It's Christian/Biblical imagery: a rock (or a mountain) is used all through the Bible as symbolism for reliability, strength and safety. So this is a mother's love that reflects those things. Plus 'like a Rock of Ages' refers to an old hymn where God is described as 'Rock of Ages cleft for me - let me hide myself in Thee'. So this mother loves with a love as strong and unchanging as God's. Okay, Bible Study over, please go on with your life ...
From Gods Word the Bible: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
Ioupi4bama- I saw that your comment is 12 years old. I just discovered Jessy Dixon recently, and find his singing and performing to be fascinating. I wrote my comment for others ,who like me ,were not familiar with, or knew of Jessy until now. I watched the videos for weeks not knowing that he had transitioned. I finally decided to do research and discovered that he had been dead for over ten years. Hopefully these videos will keep inspiring people in the future. I wish that I had known of Jessy when he was alive. I would have made great effort to attend some of his performances.
I caught myself staring at his hair (he looks like a Wooly Willy when you tapped it and the hair fell to the sides) and not paying attention to the performance!! Had to go back and rewatch it!!😸
I agree, it's too fast. He even stumbles over some of it in the first chorus. Loses the bounce, sounds like a punk polka. The answer as to "why" is nearly always that they fit it into the limited programming time slot for the TV show. Dick Cavett tended to be more interview/talk/political, not "Entertainer does his act" focused like Johnny. Song too long and the demographics begin to lose interest. Time is money in TV, like everything else. I'm guessing that Dick interviewed Paul before and/or after the performance. That's typically Mr Cavett's focus. It is really odd performing on a talk show. I played in many of the bands in the talk shows of the 60s and 70s. The audience is tiny, much smaller than it seems on TV. They're typically on the edge of bored. The constant stop/start/re-do/applaude NOW etc. quickly lets the audience know they're not at a concert. Technical people seem to outnumber the audience, cameras and lights and people are moving around all over the stage while the artists tries to appear into the lyrics. When finished, the APPLAUSE sign lights up, they shake hands and go to commercial. All within a couple of milliseconds of where the script told them they should be.
@XxLetsTalkGamesxX believe me they are dummying down, sort of speak. And that's said without disrespect to Paul. if the yokes where taken off these ladies, they would blow the sound system out...believe me.

Feeling the same way, Jack. Hugs to you

I have watched this no doubt 150 times in my life and it NEVER gets old!!
Jason Pope The Swan Silvertones, album by the same name. Hope you like it.
@ Jason Pope
I'm only your tail and gaining 😉😎😉
One of Paul Simon's greatest accomplishments was surrounding himself with the best side musicians.
+William Mark Dyer Nicely understated.
You took the words right out of my mouth ! He's also a great songwriter but that's where it ends.
I seriously can't get enough of this!
you calling Garfunkel a side-musician?
I’ve always loved this song. Paul’s version was a hit when I was a 70’s era kid. This right here ppl is real music. No lip syncing.
6th grade Halloween Dance 1973 🙈🙈🙈
The first time I ever heard this song and loved it since! 😎😉😎
I think Paul wrote this song. The Dixie Hummingbirds sang vocals on his version then ended up recording their own version a couple years later

We’re you a fan of my sweet lord by George Harrison?

Absolutely beautiful
Jessy Dixon and the singers went on after Paul. Jessy became the King of sophisticated Gospel. RIP dear Jessy. Love you always.
Jessy Dixon had been making gospel music long before the Paul Simon collaborations.
I think this might be my favorite version!
The backing vocalists on the record were the Oak Ridge Boys. They also sang backing vocals on Slip Sliding Away.

great!!! can you post the whole show with Paul Simon and Dick Cavett??
"...When I little boy...She loves Me like a rock..."
Not a PS fan, but the singing on this is brilliant.
Such a great musicia!!! Where can I find the whole show?
That is a stone cold funky backing band! Who in the devil are they?
Alfred Neuman the Jesse dixon singers
Thanks, Cliff. Now what are their names? ie: who is the bassist? who's on organ? who's on drums?
Alfred Neuman organ is Jesse Dixon
I didn't know that it was Paul Simon himself that was the high-pitched voice towards the end of the song!
Paul Simon and John (former "Cougar") Melloncamp, both have those distinctive voices that makes any song sound great!!! 😎😎😉😉😎😎
@thecornishhymnal Thank you. That helps me a lot.
The Swan Silvertones…
What the heck is Rollo from Sanford & Son doing in there at 1:42. Lol

the best thing in my life was my mom. my wife is really close.
Whoo do?
You can tell Obama's Mother loved him ! Love the song . Too bad more mothers don't love their children like this .
What, can you explain what this song is about?
The song is actually about Richard Nixon and the Watergate hearings. He supposedly said he had a Mother who loved him
2017?
I know Jesse is on every Gaither Homecoming video, so he is still kickin and better than ever, not sure about his band and vocalists on this video.
Sadly Jessy is gone. He does live on through the Gaither videos. He was a great singer, organist , and pianist. Loved Jessy Dixon.

His name was Jessy not Jesse
What’s the deal with the Andy Kaufman hair ?

Too fast. Why would he do this?
I agree, it's too fast. He even stumbles over some of it in the first chorus. Loses the bounce, sounds like a punk polka. This is not Rev Leroy Nobles
Sometimes I get the feeling Paul was a tyrannical perfectionist.
As long as I don't have a Facebook account you don't even exist to me
HELLO DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND!!!
@XxLetsTalkGamesxX believe me they are dummying down, sort of speak. And that's said without disrespect to Paul. if the yokes where taken off these ladies, they would blow the sound system out...believe me.
Good but it ain't ...
The Dixie Humming Birds
Paul seriously has the worst hairstyle in the history of mankind here
it was the 70s mkay
Those Jesse Dixon singers looked like they needed a bottle of whisky and a few lines of coke, get that motor going.
backup singers are a hair too weak in my opinion
Leave fucking biblical references out of this site!
